« A's Sign Rob Bowen | Main | Phillies Trying To Sign Moyer »
FRIDAY: The deal is official; Lopez passed his physical. First Boras client to sign.
THURSDAY: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Diamondbacks agreed to a one-year, $3.5MM deal with infielder Felipe Lopez. It's a quality move with upside. We knew Arizona had made an offer, but it seemed that Lopez (a Boras client) was seeking multiple yeares.

Can't see the Dbacks making a Byrnes-Lugo deal now.

enjoy that little sulking half-hearted suckface, Arizona.

Son of a...!
And down goes another potential Lugo dump. Man, we are never getting rid of him.

Have to admit Diamondbacks are not a stupid team.

Theo is doing some wonderful things, Sox have 2 of the worst guys, with men in scoring position.
Lugo was #1
Varitek was #5.
Keep Lugo and resign Varitek.

"Have to admit Diamondbacks are not a stupid team."
Signed Eric Byrnes long-term and traded Carlos Quentin....that's pretty dumb. Imagine how Quentin would look in LF for the D'Backs this year and last?

Okay, a guy responsible for making the Nationals significantly worse than they were already has to be BAD.

Don't imagine AZ's going to want Kelly Johnson any more.

or Ty Wiggington for that matter..........

Quality move with upside?
The difference between Orlando Hudson's gold glove caliber defense and Lopez iron glove defense is enormous, and it'll directly effect sinkerballer Brandon Webb's success.
It's not a coincidence that Webb's ERC dropped below three after Hudson arrived.

They needed a switch hitter so they wouldn't have a huge weakness in their offense. And Orlando Hudson is is the best all around 2nd baseman. They knew they couldn't completely replace him.
And anything is an upgrade over moving Mark Reynolds to 2nd.

Everyone makes dumb moves. How about picking up Chris Young, drafting Stephen Drew, hanging onto Conor Jackson, trading for Dunn (well not so much), etc. etc.
Byrnes has done more with that team IMO than any other GM in baseball. The depth of their youth is really amazing.
I like this move as well. More than a year on Lopez would be a mistake, but it's nice to see he got market value and not everyone in baseball is insane like I sometimes think.
Worst case scenario is he ends up being a utility guy, and a 1 year/3.5M deal isn't that bad for that.

"Everyone makes dumb moves."
Everyone makes dumb moves but that is a dumber move than most. Fact is, Byrnes traded away a superstar. A guy who routinely OPS'ed 930 in the minors has one injury plagued season and you trade him? Now he looks to be an MVP caliber OF'er for years to come.
Chris Young is not good and Stephen Drew fell to them in the draft because of signability concerns.
Felipe Lopez is not a good or a bad signing. They gave a low dollar contract to a bad player. Nothing major. I wouldn;t say Byrnes is a bad GM, but certainly not a great one.

I guess he realized he wasn't going to that multi year deal he was looking for? Have fun D'Back fans, this guy makes a ton of bone headed moves on defense.

Orlando Hudson would be the best overall second baseman if he wasn't standing in the shadow of Brandon Phillips and Chase Utley.

this is a good move for the d-backs. hes shown us that if he is on a good team he can play well. im not to sure about his defense though.

Or maybe that little, dirt-dog, World Series winning, Gold Glove, MVP... Dustin Pedroia.
