« Rockies Wanted Carlos Carrasco For Atkins | Main | Dodgers Could Pursue Hoffman; Cards Unlikely »
According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle Randy Johnson's agents say "San Francisco has a lot of appeal" for their client.
Barry Meister, who represents the Big Unit, said "Randy's really interested" in playing for San Francisco because the Giants are in the National League, they train in Arizona and they have the chance to be competitive.
Giants GM Brian Sabean didn't rule out Johnson either, saying the Giants "obviously would have a chance to win" with him on the mound.

I hope Randy Johnson holds out until the Dodgers sign Manny Ramirez. The Dodgers have Spring Training in Glendale, which is right next to Phoenix, and they'll have a better chance to win than the Giants. They'll definitely put up more runs.
I'm not exactly sure how he thinks the Giants will be competitive with the team they currently have though.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 11, 2008 at 05:36 PM
Randy was born in nearby Walnut Creak, CA as well.
Posted by: pnewman | December 11, 2008 at 05:36 PM
What makes the giants so appealing? Especially over the dodgers?
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 11, 2008 at 05:37 PM
If they can get a reasonable salary for 1 year, this makes sense, correct? Looks like Sabean is at least sticking to a process. Short-term, established help until some more proven prospects can make it up the chain.

"Chance to be competitive"?

"What makes the giants so appealing? Especially over the dodgers?"
better stadium, better fans, nicer city, hometown nearby...

"Chance to be competitive"?
in the NL West? absolutely
especially if the Dodgers fail to sign Manny
Posted by: wildabeast4 | December 11, 2008 at 05:38 PM
this signing would make sense for practical reasons, too. He only wants a 1-year deal, he wouldn't bust the budget and it would make a nice PR story for the Giants. Also, he wouldn't really be blocking any deserving prospects from get getting innings as those are probably at least a year away from consideration. He could also might be able to tutor Sanchez a bit.
A rotation of Lincecum, Cain, RJ, Sanchez and Zito would be quite solid.
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | December 11, 2008 at 05:39 PM
If the Giants could sign Johnson to a 1 year deal and sign someone like Burrell to a 2 or 3 year deal they would be looking much better...
could a situation like that be within the budget? how much is Burrell asking for (With hometown discount)?
Posted by: wildabeast4 | December 11, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Randy also went to college at USC. He lives in Arizona, so it really doesn't matter where he was born or where he went to school. He's looking to get to 300 victories and possibly get to the playoffs.
"better stadium, better fans, nicer city, hometown nearby..."
Better fans? Seriously? The Dodgers outdraw the Giants every year. I'm not sure how you determine "nicer city". LA easily has the better weather.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 11, 2008 at 05:41 PM
The Giants have a horrible offense. With or without Burrell, they aren't going to score runs. They need to win a bunch of 1-0 games if they expect to even get to .500.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 11, 2008 at 05:43 PM
I want to hear from Giants fans. If the Giants go .500 this year with...
1) Solid contributions from Sandoval and Ishikawa who establish themselves as everyday players
2) Bumgarner/Alderson continue their rise and are knocking on the door of the MLB
3) Gets a decent haul for Molina/Winn at the break
4) Clear space to sign a middle of the order hitter in the offseason on 2009
Has Sabean done his job? What does he need to do to not be criticized? (And please leave everything prior to 2007 out of it). I feel like he has admitted his faults as a organization and committed to the rebuilding process since he was re-upped for his 2-year extension at the beginning of last year. He has had back to back great drafts, will start 3 infielders under the age of 25 and has a top 5 minor league system.
What does he need to do to in 2009 to make Giants fans happy? You were all committed to the rebuilding plan in '08, and we all know a complete overhaul can't be done in one year. They obviously aren't going to win a World Series in 2009 so why go out and trade for a player that won't help long-term.
Posted by: giants2010 | December 11, 2008 at 05:46 PM
"The Giants have a horrible offense."
True, but Burrell/Dunn would be a significantly better middle of the order threat than Molina.
It would be start.
Posted by: wildabeast4 | December 11, 2008 at 05:47 PM
chance to be competitive..obviously the "chance" is severely low.......
Posted by: AstrosCoverage.blogspot.com | December 11, 2008 at 05:48 PM
the Dodgers may outdraw the Giants each year, but they need a larger stadium to do so. The Giants always fill a higher percentage of available seats than the Dodgers do.
Giants fans also can get to the games on time, so they miss fewer innings. :)
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | December 11, 2008 at 05:52 PM
"The Giants have a horrible offense."
Of course nothing's guaranteed, but a full year of Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa could give the Giants' offensive a big lift. Not to mention that Renteria will hit better than Omar Vizquel did, and Aaron Rowand could also have a bounce-back season.
Maybe that's one too many if's, but I think the 2009 Giants will be better offensively.
Posted by: lrs77 | December 11, 2008 at 05:54 PM
Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, Randy Johnson - that would be a rotation made in heaven.

2 years ago the NL West took two play off spots in the NL.

the giants fans don't leave in the seventh inning and boo their team
Posted by: mocal | December 11, 2008 at 06:12 PM
The Dodgers do NOT outdraw the Giants every year... Since 2000, the Giants have outdrawn the Dodgers 4 times (2000-20003)... ...and Dodger Stadium holds 15,000 more seats... LA also has a population of almost 4 million. San Francisco has under 1 million. A case can be made that Giants' fans are better. (not saying Dodger fans are bad, just that Giants fan have the edge.)
Posted by: johnmav | December 11, 2008 at 06:17 PM
The Dodgers had to pump fan noise into the stadium.
Dodgers fans leave in the 6th/7th
The stadium is a dump - if you buy a bleacher seat you cant walk around the stadium??
During Giants/Dodgers games the stadium is never full.
Every time FOX or ESPN nationally televises SF/LA games commentators always talk about how Giants fans care more about the rivalry..
hands down Giants fans are better...
Posted by: Ohan | December 11, 2008 at 06:21 PM
"Giants fans also can get to the games on time, so they miss fewer innings. :)"
I'm tired of this stupid myth. Dodger fans come to games at the same regularity of other fans. There are empty seats at every stadium in the 1st inning and the stadium is empty in the 7th of a blowout everywhere.
The Dodgers drew 1,000,000 more fans than the Giants last year. Unless the Giants sell out every game the size of the stadium is worthless. More fans go to Dodger Stadium than AT&T Park. Period.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 11, 2008 at 06:25 PM
"The Dodgers had to pump fan noise into the stadium."
Have you ever BEEN to Dodger Stadium? They don't pump "fan noise" into the stadium. It's not a dome. The crowd noise is the crowd. Period.
"Dodgers fans leave in the 6th/7th"
Incorrect. You must never have been there during the Gagne years or when Manny came. NO ONE left the stadium. But hey, I'm sure there were a bunch of people that stuck around in SF in 40 degree weather with the Giants down 12-1 last year.
"The stadium is a dump - if you buy a bleacher seat you cant walk around the stadium??"
Dodger Stadium is not a dump. But thanks for trying. It's now the 3rd oldest park in baseball and still holds up. Boo hoo, you can't walk around the entire stadium when you buy a bleacher ticket. You might be forced to actually watch the game.
"Every time FOX or ESPN nationally televises SF/LA games commentators always talk about how Giants fans care more about the rivalry.."
Really? Maybe it's because the Giants have never won a World Series in SF and so all they have to hope for is beating the Dodgers. And I don't think it's true that only Giant fans care about the rivalry. REAL fans care. Commentators are good at saying illogical things with no basis in reality.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 11, 2008 at 06:30 PM
DodgerBruin, stop talking. We are here to keep the forums focused on baseball rumors, not idiotic statements that the Dodger fans stay past the 7th...which we all know is not true.
I must admit my favorite dodger-fan comment was this gem:
"What makes the giants so appealing? Especially over the dodgers?
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 11, 2008 at 05:37 PM"
Classic, ripping your own GM who was Sabean's lackey and the Giants didn't want any piece of him anymore; he does have a cool moustouche though. Sabean is correcting mistakes and turning the organization towards the right path. Coletti wants to sign Varitek and trade Russell Martin
Posted by: Daniel Stern | December 11, 2008 at 06:39 PM
I have been lived in both cities and been to been stadiums many, many times. AT&t park is by far better...no arguing that. And dodgers fans DO show up late and leave early.
Posted by: wildabeast4 | December 11, 2008 at 06:40 PM
You Dodger fans are hilarious... Your team is crumbling to the ground and you don't even realize it. You can thank the Giants for that. Ned Colletti was our extra-special gift, JUST FOR YOU!! HAHAHAHA without Manny and with that, now, garbage pitching staff, you guys are awful. Pitching wins championships and the Giants have a core of pitchers here and on their way that are going to shove it up the Dodgers ass for the next 5-10 years.
With a full year of Sandoval, Lewis NOT playing hurt the entire year and the addition of a, now, in shape Renteria (who, yes, is a HUGE offensive upgrade over what we started at short last year) our offense is good ENOUGH. An addition of Unit and/or a proven bat will turn this team into a legit contender.
Posted by: Brent | December 11, 2008 at 06:40 PM
I cant tell you how many times I hear that the Giants fans are the only ones keeping the rivalry alive. If you Dodgers dont suck it up Moreno and his Angels is gonna take over Southern California if he hasnt already. I could care less about the Dodgers but would hate to see the oldest rivalry in sports die because you guys are, whats the word? Bums.
Posted by: JaCoby Shaddix | December 11, 2008 at 06:49 PM
"they have the chance to be competitive."
Wait what?
Posted by: Zonis | December 11, 2008 at 06:49 PM
I think that the addition of Randy Johnson would be perfect. It would pump up the volume on our younger starters, and give us a good innings as well. Also, THE DODGERS SUCK!!!!!!Look how they've desperatly tried signing our sloppy seconds (Kent,Schmidt,Tomko, the list goes on)and they still suck!!!

agreed.

the dodgers are not going to trade Martin and sign Tek! so shut up about it!
Posted by: dodgers33dodgers | December 11, 2008 at 07:26 PM
How is this Dodgerbruin guy? I'm admittedly a die hard giants fan and I lived in LA for a few years. Dodger fans quickly turned into Angel fans after that world series. Granted, die hards of all types don't leave ballparks in the 7th. But Dodger Stadium is full of ban wagon fans.
The dodgers won the division 3 games over .500, didn't exactly light up the universe. Giants could be very competetive in '09, but I agree they need to score runs. Dodgers may be able to score, but who is gonna pitch for you?
Posted by: Kfer | December 11, 2008 at 08:05 PM
giants have a much brighter future than the dodgers, their young players have a chance to be above average and their pitching staff will keep them in every game, especially with RJs mullet flapping in the wind out there
Posted by: mocal | December 11, 2008 at 08:19 PM
LOL @ angry dodger fans!!!

Dodger Fans:
How could Randy Johnson find the Giants appealing, and a contender? The Dodgers “before” Manny Ramirez was a team fighting tooth and nail to play sub .500 baseball… Even with the tremendous tear that Manny Ramirez had, the Dodgers still only ended up 4 games over .500. The Dodgers now, no longer have two mainstays in their Rotation (Derek Lowe/Brad Penny), Chad Billingsley is going to miss part of the season they speculate with his injury. Jeff Kent has retired, Saito is leaving, Furcal is practically gone, Andru Jones was a bust, I could go on.
The Giants, after starting with their older players in the season (Castillo, Durham, Omar) ended the season playing their best baseball. The Giants ended the last two months of the season (Aug/Sept) over .500 despite key members being hurt (Fred Lewis foot, Rowand broken ribs). If you Dodger fans are not familiar with Pablo Sandoval, you will become extremely familiar.
2008 Stats
Single A (273 AB’s, .359 Avg, .412 Obp, .597 Slg, 12 HRs)
Double A (184 AB’s, .337 Avg, .364 Obp, .549 Slg, 8 HRs)
MLB (154 AB’s, .345 Avg, 357 Obp, 490 Slg, 3 HRs)
Winter (152 AB’s, .388 Avg, .448 Obp, .671 Slg, 11 Hrs)
He lead the VWL (Winter League) in Batting Average, Home Runs and Slugging % (he’s also 22 years old)
The Giants have a good lead off hitter in Randy Winn, who’s bat 300+ 3 out of his 4 years in SF, and stole 25 bases last year. Edgar Renteria batting second, two years removed from winning the NL batting title. The afore mentioned Pablo Sandoval batting third. Fred Lewis, Bengie Molina, Aaron Rowand badding 5-7 who averaged between the three .281 batting average, not to mention that Molina was clutch falling 5 RBI’s short of 100. If you inject a bat in the middle of the line up, our offense will be vastly improved… And you cannot even COMPARE the Dodgers rotation (or lack there of) to the Giants. Zito has been a bust, thus far, but having someone like him as your 3rd best pitcher behind Matt Cain and the NL’s Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, you have to think the Giants have a lot to offer.
The Giants have a pitchers park, which will help Randy Johnson, it’s near his home town and perfect for the Giants… If the Giants can add Johnson, find someone to hit 4th in the line up, I for one, expect the Giants to contend next year… Not to mention, guys like Buster Posey, etc; will make their debut in September. With the offensive future in Pablo Sandoval, Buster Posey, Angel V, Kevin Frandsen, Fred Lewis making their way in, along with the rotation/stars of Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Tim A, etc… Be afraid, be very afraid!
Posted by: kuyote | December 11, 2008 at 10:51 PM
I like the idea of adding Randy Johnson to the Giant's pitching staff. Not a bad idea to make an already formidable pitching staff even more strong.
I also lived in SoCal for about 20 years and remember Angels stadium being near empty every game, until now, when all the x-Dodger fans started driving down the freeway to watch a better ball team. Dodger fans flip baseball hats faster than IHOP flips pancakes.
Oh and the weather is better in LA after you get used to gagging on the smog.
Posted by: slug214 | December 11, 2008 at 11:04 PM
One year with Randy Johnson could have a great mentoring affect on the minds of our young pitchers. The fans keep crying "youth, youth," but you can't throw ALL experience out the window. You MUST have some vetrans to stabilize these young players, and Randy has been a winner for a long time. Sign him!
Maybe with that pitching staff, some bats will choose to come to SF over other cities.

DodgersBruin that seems to be real unbias knowledge you just blessed us with.
Posted by: CyLincecum | December 12, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Giants 2010: Lets just see what this coming season brings us first. Both on the farm and the big club. Last year the Giants were a team that could compete to win on any random game. This year the Giant look to be team that can compete in any random series. Thats a big step but let's not get to carried away and think this is team with an 80 win floor – yet. They get t o near that 80 win floor then we can begin thinking about chattering like a contender in the off season. That just my 2 cents worth.
Random people questioning if the Giants are competitive: Scoreboard says the 90 loss team went 9-9 Vs. the Division leader. 7-5 after the All Star break. Enough said.
I am all for The Unit on a year. Even if team misses Tim & Cain facing Sanchez, Zito and Johnson in a 3 game series should be rather fun. Especially in a division were there should be a lot young hitters playing key roles.
Posted by: daveinexile | December 12, 2008 at 01:00 PM
The Dodgers outdraw the Giants every year? That's funny since AT&T Park has opened, the Giants have outdrawn every team in baseball....EVERY team, even with last years down year in attendance.
DodgerBruin....you would be jealous if you could actually walk around AT&T park and watch the game from any vantage point and know you can't at Dodger stadium. I've done it. I can freely WATCH the game from anywhere. Up in the arcade is awesome! If you ever make through the smog ladden dungeon of LA you should check it out for yourself.
This isn't to say the Dodger Stadium isn't beautiful. Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper mention it every year on their first trip down on their CSN sports broadcast. It just doesn't compare to the smog free and visually captivating scene no matter which direction you look at AT&T.
About the Rivalry. It IS dying. I hate the Dodgers and all the Giants fans I know hate the Dodgers but it definately isn't what it used to be. The Giants/Dodger rivalry is now only the third biggest behind Red Sox/Yankees and Cardinals/Cubs and soon could fall behind the Tampa Bay/Yankee rivalry. I think to rekindle it we need a pitcher to whack a catcher on the other team with a baseball bat ala Juan Marichal....and that isn't going to happen unless someone gets real hopped up on the roids! I think the rivalry really started to drop off after free agency and took a dramitic fall when Tommy choked on one to many meatballs and retired.
