Whew. As a Mets fan, seeing the words "Indians" and "sign K-Rod" in the same sentence almost gave me a heart attack

LoL...I'm not high on K-Rod but I thought the same thing
Posted by: metsfnatic | December 08, 2008 at 01:22 PM
I saw Mets sign K-Rod and went into cardiac arrest.

You also have to remember this is Joel Sherman. As a fellow New Yorker, nothing he says ever makes sense. And sometimes, I feel like he says absolutely ridiculous things for PR

And you Met fans dont want K-Rod, not for $15M a year.
You guys should trade Heilman for a Casy janssen/Jeremy Accordo type guy and see if he can be put in the closers role.
I know, this is NY you shouldnt have to do that but it just doesnt make sense. Mariano shoudnt make the money he makes and there's no reasonK-rod should. So his team had a lot of times where they won with 3 or less runs. Saves are just a stat for recording purposes, it has no correlation with performance

I'm pretty sure everybody in the National League hopes the Mets sign K-Rod over Fuentes, Wood, etc. K-Rod is the least desirable closer of these all. His velocity is down, his strikeouts are down, his WHIP is up, his ERA is up, and he basically didn't do anything an above-average closer couldn't have done last year given the number of save opportunities. As a Braves fan I pray to GOD the Mets sign K-Rod. I'd love for him to blow 7 saves in the NL East.

just to make myself feel good for a few seconds, i put my thumb over "hope mets" and read the headline about four or five times. it felt good for about five seconds, then i took my thumb off and now i'm a little disappointed.
anyways, i would love to see putz or velvarde if we could get one of them for couple prospects. i doubt mariners will give up putz for just a couple prospects though, but velvarde is a possibility.

I'd also rather have Putz or Valverde, too, in an affordable deal. I dont want to give up Shoppach in a deal for a closer, either. Fuentes for 3 years would be good.

how come you dont hear anything from the Angels about K-rod?
are they going to offer him a contract? or have they already?
Stat Man- No one else is even talking to K-Rod, no way we offered him 15/per closer to 12 with an opt 4th year maybe a 6MM buyout? could make it a 3/42 contract.

I think people are starting to get carried away with the "i hope they sign K-rod". Lets not pretend he isnt a good closer, and if the mets can afford it and not limit themselves in payroll down the road its not a bad deal. That said, Wood is better.

I don't understand the lack of interest in Trevor Hoffman. He's an effective closer, he won't cost you draft pics, he won't cost over $10mil/year and he won't demand 3 years. Less risk, less cost, no draft picks, just as effective.

Putz would be a great "buy low" if you can term it that and if the Mets could indeed buy low. Perhaps was the best closer in baseball (numbers wise) before a horrible '08.
It's certainly an odd closers market. I still think Wood would make sense in Texas.

Also, Wood is better talent wise, but for all the talk about K-Rod and potential injuries, he hasn't been hurt to this point despite the drop in velocity, Wood is still a massive injury risk.

AtlantaBred-
I am pretty sure there has NEVER been a season like last for K-Rod. So to say he didnt do anything that any above avg closer could do is pure ignorance. does it have to be a good situation for that to happen sure!! but to show that type of durability over a season cannot be overlooked. Not to mention its the largest glaring need in the mets BP
SEPTEMBER HELP
That being said I am not very high on K-Rod. I agree his velocity bothers me.
That being said, Fuentes is old and has never had the type of numbers that K-Rod has put up year after year. My biggest worry with K-Rod was signing him to 5 years, even 4 I dont like. But 3yrs of K-rod or 3 of Fuentes is a pretty easy decision.
And trading for a closer with the market this much in our favor doesnt make too much sense either.
Posted by: Fish&Mets | December 08, 2008 at 01:55 PM
I agree that Wood has the highest upside. Its just that mets need the "sure thing" and wood's injured past doesnt offer that... he could only be considered in the setup role because of it.. so.... Never happens

fish&mets-
Fuentes:BB/9 was only 3.16 (better than k-rod)
K/9 was 11.78 (better than k-rod)
H/9 was 6.75 (better than k-rod)
BAA was .205 (better than k-rod)
OBA was .277 (better than k-rod)
SLG was .293 (better than k-rod)
WHIP was 1.10 (better than k-rod)
people really need to look at stats other than era and saves it comes down to a lot more than just that
also Fuentes pitched in colorado his era away from their was 1.84
yeaa he definetly "has never had the type of numbers that k-rod had"
your very smart you must have looked at a lot of numbers before you started typing

seriously indian fans dont have an orgasm when you see this... how are you gonna waste money on a closer if you dont have pitchers to put the indians in a save opportunity, if you do sign him as a white sox fan i dont worry about it because his gonna be confy in the bench warming up the seat......STOP WRITTING DUMB RUMORS LIKE THIS, mets are going to sign him
and thats the end of that
