« Derek Lowe Rumors: Wednesday | Main | Cubs Inquire On Chone Figgins »
10:13pm: According to Ed Price:
The Dodgers have had internal discussions about extending their contract offer to Manny Ramirez to three years.
9:47pm: Dan Graziano's source suggests "there is a push by some members of the Yankees' organization to make a play for free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez."
5:02pm: Despite numerous reports to the contrary, Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times says the Angels are "believed to be considering a two-year offer to Manny Ramirez." Shaikin adds that Juan Rivera remains on the Halos' radar.
4:12pm: Jayson Stark talked to a source who said the Angels have zero interest in Manny.
9:59am: Jon Heyman talked to people close to Hank Steinbrenner who say he wants Manny. Heyman says the Yanks are mulling a run at the slugger.
9:28am: T.J. Simers talked to Dodgers GM Ned Colletti, who said Scott Boras told him four other teams have expressed interest in Manny Ramirez. Colletti quipped: "That's good. I wouldn't like to see a guy out of work."

That might be the single funniest thing an active GM in any sport has said!
Good for you, Ned.

Three will actually be teams in the mix while one will be a phantom team that no one will ever know about. Manny Rameriz is not getting more than 3 years so goodluck Boras, hope that book can convince teams otherwise.
Posted by: Steven | December 10, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Wow, Colletti may be an awful GM, but he can deliver a zinger with the best of them.
Four teams interested? Interest doesn't equal dollars. I hope Manny has to take a one year deal. He deserves it after jumping into bed with Scott Boras and the circus he started by dogging it last season in Boston
Posted by: Gstill45 | December 10, 2008 at 09:32 AM
I have interest in doing naughty things with Angelina Jolie. Doesn't mean it's going to materialize into anything real.
Or is it......?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 10, 2008 at 09:35 AM
At this point, Manny will be lucky to even get 3 years...At that point, the Mets should jump in with a 2 year offer for, say, $30-32 Mil
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 10, 2008 at 09:38 AM
The other four teams interested in Manny are:
Las Vegas Mirages
Portland Phantoms
Omaha Ghosts
Buffalo Bluffs
Posted by: Little Bear | December 10, 2008 at 09:44 AM
metzfan22,
come on now, who's going to pitch for you then, Pedro 3x a week?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 10, 2008 at 09:46 AM
Manny would laugh at that offer. The Dodgers offered 2 years for 45 mil earlier this off-season.
Posted by: ksuth | December 10, 2008 at 09:46 AM
ksuth, your missing the point. the dodgers did offer 2yrs at 45 million earlier this offseason, and when boras wanted more, they withdrew their offer. now that there is no interest in manny, boras is goin back to the dodgers tellin them that 4 teams are interested. i guess he is hoping to get that 2yr, 45 million deal again, but the ball is not in ned's court. manny would be lucky to get more than 2 or 3 yrs.
Posted by: lilray4000 | December 10, 2008 at 09:53 AM
^^^^^ sorry, meant to say that ball is on ned's court
Posted by: lilray4000 | December 10, 2008 at 09:54 AM
I'm with you Gstill45, I hope he is forced to take a 1 year deal after what he did to the Red Sox this year. It still amazes me the free pass he got for laying down on them.
Posted by: Papelboner | December 10, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Now that's funny, Ned Coletti sounds like a guy I would want to work for
Posted by: fearthechant | December 10, 2008 at 10:01 AM
"Jon Heyman talked to people close to Hank Steinbrenner who say he wants Manny. Heyman says the Yanks are mulling a run at the slugger."
Fortunately for the Yankees and their fans, Hank's opinion stopped mattering when George handed the reigns over to Hal.
Posted by: 0bsessions | December 10, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Obsessions; I agree. lol
I don't know if i'd mind Manny, being that he wants to torch boston... but we'd have to get rid of Matsui... and have MRI's on Manny's knee... or knees, lo..
Posted by: casper | December 10, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Manny Yankee's new CF, wait our new LF, wait he can't play that either, our new ??? What the heck is he going to play.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 10, 2008 at 10:08 AM
I guess move Damon and his water hose of an arm to center... do you sacrifice defense for Manny hitting in front of ARod and behind Damon and Jeter?
Posted by: casper | December 10, 2008 at 10:10 AM
and I meant "Garden hose"
Posted by: casper | December 10, 2008 at 10:11 AM
If the yankees were to sign, AJ, CC, Manny, and Lowe, I will quit watching baseball I'll give up on the game of baseball, it ludacris...
Posted by: bartendermlb | December 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Please Hank....NO NO NO!!
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | December 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM
The only reason Manny would be good for NY is b/c is bat is huge and he would take away so much distraction away from CC who will have huge expectations.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM
uh-oh the Yankees are involved now. Look for a 5 year 120 million bid.
MLB really needs to re-look at the luxury tax and how the Yankees are skidding on that with their new stadium. didn't they get enough sweetheart deals from the state? Exactly how much are the yankees saving and for how long, anybody know? I know in years past they paid like 23-28 million per year.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM
haha there might be suitors... but who the heck is willing to offer six years
Posted by: aznxjapboiz | December 10, 2008 at 10:27 AM
"I don't know if i'd mind Manny, being that he wants to torch boston..."
Honestly, I'm not so sure Manny has the attention span to hold any kind of grudge.
Posted by: 0bsessions | December 10, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Maybe 3 years with incentive options that keep him playing hard .. and a clause that if he does anything stupid like he did in Boston the contract can be voided. lol
Posted by: casper | December 10, 2008 at 10:31 AM
NYY should trade Matsui and sign Manny to DH. When Manny's deal is done, move Jeter to DH or have him split time with an up and coming new short stop for the future.
Posted by: Cyrus | December 10, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Manny with the NYY...oh, yeah...bring it on! I would really enjoy the Manny show in NY. I would guess the first year would be full of love. Then, watch the show crumble!
I just remembered. He loved LA and wanted to be a Dodger for life. Ehhh, misprint! Manny plays for the love of the game. I bet he would put that clause in his next contract to prove it.
Posted by: studio179 | December 10, 2008 at 10:33 AM
If Colletti could manage a teams business as well as he pops off that big mouth the Dodgers would be unbeatable. I'm sure it helps to sign other big names by taking shots at them as they leave.

"Honestly, I'm not so sure Manny has the attention span to hold any kind of grudge."
Manny has the attention span to hold a grudge... he just doesn't have the internal motivation to act on it.
"Maybe 3 years with incentive options that keep him playing hard .. and a clause that if he does anything stupid like he did in Boston the contract can be voided. lol"
Direct numbers-based incentives aren't allowed, but they could include playing-time incentives. I'm not sure what that would accomplish, however, because Manny could physically take the field and/or step up to the plate and collect on the incentives without any assurances that he's providing maximum effort.
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | December 10, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Yeah, even if there were a legitimate way to catalogue whether or not Manny were giving up on his team, there's no way Boras or the Union would stand for it.
Posted by: 0bsessions | December 10, 2008 at 10:45 AM
because the Phillies have NEVER signed any free agents correct?
Posted by: Cyrus | December 10, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Colletti just gave me a team to root for in the NL West.
Posted by: Marvel | December 10, 2008 at 10:58 AM
casper: "I guess move Damon and his water hose of an arm to center"
Lol. Manny can go back to being Damon's cutoff man.

haha just not good ones.

I don't think it's a parting shot Burtis, just part of the game....negotiations via the media ;)

Come on man, Manny aint goin anywhere else than the dodgers. The yankees just locked up CC, no way are they gonna offer a fat contract for manny too.

"Come on man, Manny aint goin anywhere else than the dodgers. The yankees just locked up CC, no way are they gonna offer a fat contract for manny too."
if Ned and Franky dont pony up the dough, Manny wont come here..
Its obvious that Manny wants to be paid, dude if the Royals, Mariners, The Nationals made a offer that he saw fit he would go there..
Furcal is the most important thing right now..

Mannywøød, sounds so funny when played on the radio.. if somebody can find that audio clip i would be very appreciative.

chuckle
Are the Yankees ever NOT interested in a big-time free agent?

"That's good. I wouldn't like to see a guy out of work."
I lol'd.
Posted by: Doody | December 10, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Manny is not going to get the ridiculous contract that he (and Boras want/expect). His antics on/off the field have decreased his value substantially. He is still one of the best offensive players in the game, but will be lucky to get a contract over 4 years. I'm guessing four years 76 Million from the mets with a mutual option for the fifth year at around 20 mil.

She loves me... she loves me not...
Posted by: dodgrdog88 | December 10, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Looks like the Angels need to lurk here once in a while to find that 2 year offers aren't quite the conversation starters with Manny/Boras that they evidently may think.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 10, 2008 at 05:08 PM
This can only help the Dodgers. If no one is willing to go more than 3 years with Manny the Dodgers are still in the picture.
Ofcourse now that there are other people involved I'm sure Ned will wait till they all back out and then give Manny the 6 years he wants. He's a great clubhouse character, a team leader, a veteran presence bla bla bla....
The one problem with Manny is that he doesn't have a significant injury history to qualify to play with the Dodgers. We only target guys that have played for the Giants and have partially torn labrums.
Posted by: dusto | December 10, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Omar is waiting and then boom, 3 year offer, welcome to Queens.
(maybe not, but it would be fun)
Posted by: MrMet | December 10, 2008 at 05:36 PM
if manny ends up in ny, tex is a lock for boston
Posted by: 04Forever | December 10, 2008 at 09:53 PM
If Yankee's do a swoop and land Manny, then Dodger fans should just do the "FINE, WHATEVER" thing that other team's fans have done, like the old days when the Yankees used to go out and buy [opportunities for] championships the last couple of decades prior to last season. I used to think Ned/Frank's 2/45 or 3/60 offer was a joke, but actually looks pretty good considering the market as it currently stands. I'd hold no animosity towards Manny, he gave LA a good run. If the $$ is all that makes him tick, then fine. The team that ultimately gets Manny will be getting a helluva hitter. Used to love hating the Yankees, if I have to love hating them again, then so be it :D
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 10, 2008 at 10:04 PM
i think its a bluff by the yankees.
"Hey were getting Manny. Hey were getting Manny. Hey we got Tex."
Manny would only be worth is if hes the DH, but that means moving Matsui. Getting Tex fills the 1B need much better than Swisher while helping the defense. Now that would be the smart thing to do. with that said, theyre going to sign Burnett for 5 years and Lowe for 4 and ruin everything. so enjoy Tex Boston.
Posted by: GeneralManager | December 10, 2008 at 10:13 PM
sign manny for three years max. we need a DH after next year anyway
Posted by: Dynasty26 | December 10, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Can someone name the last free agent we signed before CC, since everyone says that we buy all of our players???????????
Posted by: Dynasty26 | December 10, 2008 at 10:16 PM
WHY NOT TEX????
Posted by: GeneseoMC20 | December 10, 2008 at 10:16 PM
EXACTLY
Posted by: Dynasty26 | December 10, 2008 at 10:19 PM
WOW, There have been about 10 postings in a row NOT related to Cubs rumors...What is going wrong?
Posted by: golfstar2020 | December 10, 2008 at 10:19 PM
The last non-foreign, non-yankee the yankees signed I think was Damon.
Posted by: GeneseoMC20 | December 10, 2008 at 10:21 PM
"Can someone name the last free agent we signed before CC, since everyone says that we buy all of our players???????????"
Free agency isn't the only way to buy players. Restructuring contracts to consummate trades and resigning potential free agents at way-above market rates are just a couple of examples.
Thanks for askin' ;)

Of course they have had internal talks about extending his contract offer to 3 years. However, this is silly to report. Just because they have had internal talks about it doesn't mean they're remotely close to doing it. It could, but having internal talks about something mean NOTHING.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 10, 2008 at 10:24 PM
They've better give him three goddamn years. They give Blake three but are thinking about giving three to Manny.
Posted by: Doody | December 10, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Doody, same goes for Raffy, but that's another thread =)
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 10, 2008 at 10:27 PM
if the Yankees are going to spend upwards of 20 mil for a position player it should be Tex.
Posted by: GeneralManager | December 10, 2008 at 10:38 PM
Yanks should offer 3 years and a bit more than decent amount of money to Manny add some almost instant offense as well as excitement in the clubhouse
Posted by: Rique | December 10, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Halos hurry up and sign Tex and Manny already. Bring in Fuentes and we'll be set.
Posted by: dpncharge | December 10, 2008 at 10:50 PM
"Halos hurry up and sign Tex and Manny already. Bring in Fuentes and we'll be set."
Arte's at a Circle K right now signaling to the bullpen, he has an acute case of carpal-tunnel from then blasted Cal-Lotto scratch-offs trying to make your dreams come true....

I forgot all about that diving cut off play manny made. One of the funniest things ive seen in baseball. Thats the kinda guy I want in my outfield... an outfielder cutting off throws from other outfielders. Let him dh somewhere so he can give minimal effort and still be productive. Asking him to stand in the outfield and catch balls and throw them back to the infield is too much to ask of this mental midget
