« Pirates Get Last Crack At Mientkiewicz | Main | Perrotto's Latest: Dye, Jenks, Werth, Madson »
THURSDAY: We didn't mention this yesterday - Branyan gets $1.4MM on his one-year deal.
WEDNESDAY: According to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Mariners signed infielder Russell Branyan to a one-year deal. Branyan, 33 later this month, hit .250/.342/.583 in 152 plate appearances for the Brewers this year. It's hardly an impact signing, but Branyan's still a solid pickup as long as he doesn't face lefties. The Mariners seemingly plan to give Branyan near-regular playing time.

Well.
The Mariners needed to find some more power from somewhere.
Does anyone else think this could possible be a precursor to an upcoming Adrian Beltre deal?
Branyan would be a good part time 3B for them, and would allow them to develop Carlos Triunfel at third, as Triunfel has moved off of short but has still looked awesome the past year.

Fun fact: Highest K percentage in mlb history.

*yawns at signing*

I smell a platoon coming. I imagine Beltre will be flipped to either SF or MIN.
They'll work in Tuiasosopo (who they were impressed with last year) a la Jeff Clement, in other words, starts vs. lefties, Branyan vs. righties. Then on days Tui starts, Branyan moves over to first (maybe a platoon with Clement or LaHair?).
Triunfel is still a few years away from reaching the majors, and Tui has the bat ready and the glove's coming along.

Great signing. One of the more underrated players around, could be a poor man's (haha) Jack Cust if he gets a starting platoon job.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 03, 2008 at 01:29 PM
I remember watching him when the Indians brought him up. Branyan swung so hard, I just remember being amazed like "I wonder if he'll get a hold of this one? No? OK, maybe this one? No?". One of those guys who will always get a look at though.

More like a poor man's Richie Sexson. In a rebuilding year, why in the world would the M's commit at-bats to Russell Branyan when guys like Clement, Balentien, Tui, Morse, etc etc etc need to either show what they have to offer, or be moved along??
We're not anywhere close winning this year, we don't need a one dimensional hitter off the bench to come on in the 9th and cause a pitching change... We will not be in any high pressure games this year.
It makes no sense. Even if it's a precursor to moving Beltre, it's still a wasted deal.
This is nothing more than a continuation of the Mariner's pathetic track record of signing mediocre guys Wilkerson last year, Broussard, the year before, and on and on, down to Cirillo, and all the way back to Pete O'Brien.
This team lacks vision and direction, and will continue to give away talent like Choo, Podsednick, David Ortiz, etc etc because they put some crappy veteran in front of them to logjam their move to the Majors. They always will, and I am not looking forward to watching Wakamatsu's first quarter of the season, while he sits fingers-crossed, hoping Branyan finally breaks a slump...

I suspect this will wind up being a good move. I don't know what the $$ amount was, but I doubt it was much.
Branyan will K a lot, for sure, but he still has jaw-dropping power. I like him as a platoon-3B.

Come away from the ledge man..
This is a great signing. A 1 year, no risk/medium reward stop-gap signing.
Let me drop some knowledge on ya. Tui needs at least another year in AAA and is no guarantee to be good. Morse is a slappy bench player. And Clement and Balentien cannot play 1B.
There are plenty of at bats for a guy like Branyan (who is coming off a great (partial) year with the Brewers. Stick him in there at either 1B, 3B, DH, LF or RF against righties and watch him hit .250 with 20+ homers in 2009.
Nice sign GMZ.

I'm about one of the biggest seattle fans around and I can see where this deal works. It's probably a real low salary type deal for a power lefty in a park that caters to left handed power hitters. LaHair isn't a real great option (not an entirely bad option) at 1B. Tui although he has made progress doesn't have it quite yet to make it everyday. Morse is a hard worker, but we've yet to see it happen for him in numerous chances. Basically platoon or not giving Branyan a shot really won't be as bad of a move for 1 year as some people might think
Posted by: MakinItMine | December 03, 2008 at 02:26 PM
I think this is a great signing. He's not bad on defense, draws walks, and has tons of power. It'll be a very cheap deal and it won't hurt anybody's development. Plus, they can trade him to a contender in July who needs a lefty bat off the bench.
Posted by: Jonathan C. Mitchell | December 03, 2008 at 02:27 PM
I completely disagree. This would be a good signing back in 2000 or 2001, even 02 when the Mariners were a 20HR, 70RBI guy away from the world series. That guy could have come off the bench, spelled Olerud and Edgar, and batted 7th in the line-up.
We're nowhere close to benefitting from branyan's services, even if he reaches his absolute ceiling. Not only that, but he'll be slotted in 4th-5th in the line-up because some genious believes he's a real power hitter, and you and I will begin reeling in pain over how many times Ichiro is left on 3B.
This is not the Rays taking a risk on Pena, or the Jays picking up Overbay...this is a guy who has never had a high ceiling.
Agreed on your assessment of Tui, Morse not so much. Morse's ceiling is Branyan, minus the strikeouts.
My question is, what are we "stop-gapping?" We're in rebuild mode. We should have never signed Wilkerson last year, and shouldn't have made this deal this year, because it will take at-bats from guys with potential who we need to make decisions on.
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | December 03, 2008 at 02:29 PM
Yeah sure Morse might have a ceiling of Branyan, but the thing is Morse is 26 and hasn't really shown his potential and will never reach his power ceiling as he has failed to even reach 10 homeruns at the AAA level
Posted by: MakinItMine | December 03, 2008 at 02:38 PM
The Mariners now have a cheap and decent option at 3B, so if they want to shop Beltre, they can.
That's a pretty nice option to have, given Beltre's contract.
If they keep Beltre, then Branyan is a DH and occasional 3B.
I'm not even a Mariners fan, and I think it's a smart signing.
Posted by: Dan | December 03, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Since you brought it up, Branyan has hit more than 20 Home Runs exactly ONCE in his career, and has batted under .240 7 out of 9 seasons. He has never been a regular, save the year that he hit over 20 homers, and in that year he struck out once every 2.5 at-bats.
He has NEVER had over 60 RBIS in a year. I don't care if he is free, the lack of atbats going to younger guys is far more valuable than anything we'll get from Branyan, which, if we're being realistic, definetely won't be .250 and 20HRs.
If he's in the lineup everyday he's likely to hit sub-.200.
This is Brad Wilkerson all over again, and anyone who thinks Brad Wilkerson was a good signing is just plain blind. If Bavasi didn't think Wilkerson was a good option in RF, we wouldn't have traded Jones, and the farm, and we'd all be alot happier right now.
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | December 03, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Furthermore, this closes the book on any Mariner Fan who thought Griffey might make a return this year.
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | December 03, 2008 at 03:23 PM
Yeah the Wilkerson signing was supposed to be decent as well but that didn't really pan out I know I'll give that...
One thing I do see is that Branyan's AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS are all above that of wilkerson the year of the signing of wilkerson...maybe they're backin on that
Posted by: MakinItMine | December 03, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Career-Wise Brad Wilkerson has better numbers then Branyan in almost every category. So statiscally, Wilkerson was a better signing.
Anyone who would argue that Wilkerson was a good signing is not very bright, and not to call anyone dumb, but in my opinion, anyone who thinks that this Branyan deal is a good one, is looking through very optimistic glasses, and thinking that Branyan somehow is going to learn how to hit LHP, and forget how to K.
He has never in his entire life been a full time starter, and why JZ thinks that he can become one now is a frightening glimpse of the Mariner's new GM's ineptitude and lack of vision regarding a 2-year rebuild...
Wilkerson KILLED Morse last year by taking his at bats and time in the field, killed Balentien by keeping him stuffed in AAA, and took atbats away from Bloomquist, Reed, and Clement. He was here for a quarter of the year, and set the tone for the whole season.
Branyan will do the same for this year's crop of young players, and for what??? the potential of a .228/ 24HR/ 55 RBI Season????
Completely and absolutely out of line with a rebuild, and completely inline with Bavasi's track record of idiotic and counterproductive deals.
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | December 03, 2008 at 04:20 PM
Man, AntiRecruiter, you have a weird sense of things. I really don't know where to begin.
I guess I'll start with Morse. He is a non-prospect. He has the ceiling of a bench player, pinch hitter. Not giving him at bats is not an issue. I saw you agreed on Tui. He needs more time in AAA. LaHair is also pretty much valueless. On top of that our actual "prospects", Clement and Balentien, have yet to show they can hit at the Major League level.
Those are a ton of 'ifs' and 'maybes' there. Thats not even counting Reed who is a 4th outfielder at best. Fact is, there are a ton of holes on this team and giving every spare at bat to a Morse-type, no MLB future, AAAA player does us no good. All that will ensure is another 100 loss season.
We need a few "stop-gap" players like Branyan because there ARE so many damn gaps on this team and I hate to say this, but there aren't many in-house options to fill them. He is not meant to be the piece that comes in and glues this team together for a playoff run. He is meant to fill a hole, cheaply and providing some short term production.
Branyan may have his flaws, but even though he hits .230 and strikesout a ton every year, he still has managed a .500 career SLG% and .800+ OPS. That is nothing to sneeze at especially when the Mariners have lacked power for some time now.
Branyan will fill a need for the 2009 REBUILDING Mariners in that he costs nothing, is signed for 1 year, and will produce if he is implemented correctly.

Also, you seem to like to compare Wilkerson to Branyan. I have one piece of info that is very important to that comp.
Wilkerson has been washed up for years now. There was no evidence when Bavasi signed him that he would be any good.. at all. Branyan on the other hand just came off the best season of his career. I mean he slugged almost .600 and had a .925 OPS for crying out loud. Give this guy a chance, you might be surprised.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 03, 2008 at 05:05 PM
This is a great signing..
Flip Beltre. Get some good prospects, play Branyan. Nobody gets hurt what so ever. It helps us in the future for sure. He is not going to send us to the world series.. he is just a spot holder right now. THIS IS PART OF REBUILDING PEOPLE. If you don't see that.. then you need to follow baseball a little more.
Posted by: SwarzakGuy40 | December 03, 2008 at 05:20 PM
I agree thr33niL.....although Bavasi is an idiot and was probably like "wow wilkerson hit 20 HR in this division last season so he will kill on our team"
Posted by: MakinItMine | December 03, 2008 at 05:39 PM
I appreciate your opinion thr33nil and ability to eloquently support it with statistics and all, but also respectfully disagree completely. There is no indication that Russell Branyan can hit LHP, in fact, in his "best season of his career" he had zero hits against LHP, and Zero BBs. That's a Zero AVG, OBP, and OPS. Yet, somehow, off of a 50 game stint in which he hit a career high .250, he's anointed an everyday first baseman?
Him at 1B slides someone else into the DH Spot, which should be open to Clement and Balentien. So perhaps you're right about Morse (though Morse's Spring last year offers evidence to the contrary) and LaHair (who I agree with you on), NO ONE would argue that Clement and Balentien aren't worth a full season look, and many would argue that Clement is a future stud.
2008 hardly indicates his ability to start and produce those types of OBP and OPS. He played 50 games, and produced nothing against LHP.
This is a ridiculous signing, and if it somehow leaves JZ in a position where he's replaced Beltre's production at 3rd, then we've got a long long year ahead of us.
I will, for the record, respectfully disagree with anyone who feels like this is a smart move, rather than another crappy effort by Mariner Management to fool fans into thinking they're trying to win. If I'm wrong, I'll be happy about it, because I've been a Mariner fan for a long time.
Best case scenario is that they rake someone's farm on a Beltre Deal and trade Branyan for a young middle relief pitcher at the break, I suppose.
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | December 03, 2008 at 06:16 PM
I totally respect your opinion to disagree on Branyan but to treat it as the worst signing of all time is bit over the top hyperbole-wise.
I (and everyone else on earth) agrees that Branyan stinks against lefties. Given. But to discount what he does against RHers is not fair. And Branyan at 1B blocks no one at this juncture. Clement can still split at C and DH. Balentien still has the OF where he is most likely penciled as our everyday LFer right now. The only at bats Branyan is taking is LaHairs. Zduriencik has come out and said as much. That Branyan is our everyday first baseman right now.
You know.. I don't mind if Branyan takes every one of LaHairs at bats because, to be honest, LaHair has no business on a big league club.
But what makes Branyan such a good sign in my eyes is that, if Zduriencik stumbles upon a better, younger, more long term option at 1B, Branyan can move to the bench or fill in somewhere else. Thats the beauty of signing a flexible guy like Branyan to a 1 year deal. Pretty much no risk and he can play all over the diamond or sit the bench.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 03, 2008 at 07:35 PM
Granted the M’s aren’t my team (Giants fan just so my biases is known) but I see this as a solid move. No long term commitment, a flexible (though flawed player) hard not to like it. The comparison to Wilkerson is off though because Wilkerson was billed as “an answer” were as Branyan seems to be viewed by the front office as a piece meal move.
Scribletone: Could be but I would lean towards the Twins. They are in a much better position to use a 1 year rental for a post season push.
Posted by: daveinexile | December 04, 2008 at 08:40 AM
Branyan won't be playing much 3B; he'll fill a gaping 1B hole, and likely platoon at 1B with Morse, who actually hits left-handers very well. Branyan may play a little 3B and DH, but I suspect he's going to get 400 AB at 1B. Regardless of Ks and .250 BA, his walk rate and power are a big upgrade over a disaster at 1B last year at 10% of the cost.
If the M's sign Griffey for DH, the same can said. Griffey is still capable of 25 Hr, 80 RBI, and a .350 OBP to go with a .260 BA. That's not spectacular, but it's a BIG upgrade from a total disaster at DH last year. And at the right price, it's a 1 year "be competitive" signing while they learn about Balentein and Clement in particular at Major League level and give guys like Halman, Saunders, Triunfel, Tuiasasopo, and Adam Moore one more important year of minor league development.
With Branyan and Griffey, the M's add left-handed pop they desperately will need when Ibanez leaves in free agency. With those two and the signing of a good defensive LF or CF platoon player, and with the Rule 5 pick-up of a couple of high-risk, high-reward potential bullpen additions, the M's can at least compete at a much higher level than 2008. They are building for 2009 and hoping to win big in probably 2010.
