« Olney's Latest: Cano, Burnett, Furcal, Giambi | Main | Indians Sign Tomo Ohka »
According to MLB.com's Marty Noble, the Mets prefer Francisco Rodriguez to Brian Fuentes and J.J. Putz. Noble adds that they don't expect to return from the winter meetings with a closer. No reason to rush with supply exceeding demand. Putz's availability, though, remains in question.
ESPN's Buster Olney says the Mets have discussed internally the idea of making multiple offers to free agent closers and signing whichever one jumps first.

i cant believe the angels will let him go....

K-Rod signing with the Mets just makes so much sense for both parties.
The Mets are trying to be coy but I believe he is their top priority.

The mets offseason has been oddly quiet. Yes they have time with the closer signing, but a closer is just one of the positions they need to fill. They need to rebuild the entire bullpen, sign a starter deal with left field.
Hopefully, the winter meetings heat things up for the Mets, because they have a complex offseason ahead.

I can easily believe the Angels would let him go with such a clear long term replacement in Arredondo.
I think at this point I'd say K-Rod will end up in New York for like 3/39 or 4/48, and then they'll try and fill the rest of the bullpen from there.
I still think that if they can make the Heilman/Feliciano for Street deal, they ought to. Street still has good upside and would be a great set up man, and that would definitely be buying low considering the cost would be two age 30 relievers.

Kerry Wood, please.
I'm not a huge Street fan, but the Mets HAVE to make that Heilman and Feliciano deal if that's really the asking price.

Worst kept secret of 2008 off-season. Kind of like last year when the debate about "where" A-Rod would sign.
The Mets want K-Rod. He is the best closer available. With the gap between K-Rod and Fuentes is just a couple million a year it's an easy decision. This is just more posturing by the Mets to drive down K-Rod's choice.

bjsguess- Exactly. The Mets control the closer's market.

I think the two worst kept secrets of the 2008 offseason so far has been Towers giving daily Peavy updates and if Burnett would opt out of his deal. Poor JP actally thought he might resign at one time.
The K-Rod/Mets rumors are high on the list.

Chris - I think the Mets are comfortable handing the LF position to Murphy and keeping Castillo at 2B.
I'd rather go hard after Manny Ramirez for LF, play Murphy at 2B (which won't be pretty), and sit Castillo. I hate when teams start players just because they have large contracts.

Chris, I don't think we will see a big free agent signing in the outfield ala Manny unless they trade Ryan Church, which in that case I think the Mets would go after Raul Ibanez. The Mets seem content with a Murphy/Tatis platoon in one of the corner outfield spots and Omar Minaya actually believes that Castillo will come back healthy next season to play second. We'll see...

Chris W., I hope you are wrong!!
I would be ok with either Murphy or Castillo but to settle to having both of them in the lineup would just be disappointing.
Castillo was not just nicked up last year, the guy could not play in a day game after a night game. I am not buying into the idea that he is going to be healthy and ready to go this year.
Part of the Mets problem last year was that the 6-9 slots were pretty much easy outs.

Oh yeah, K-Rod - It's just gesturing at this point. I just hope it doesn't end up to be a 4/60 contract and more along the lines of a Francisco Cordero-type deal. I could live with that, but only because I've pretty much accepted the fact that K-Rod will be a Met next year.

MattyMets - I agree, I don't see the Ramirez signing happening, either - I'd just LIKE to see it.
I am very down on the idea of signing Ibanez - is the difference between him and Church worth the money, draft picks, and greater risk of age-related collapse?
Chris - totally agree. The Mets received almost no offensive production from the 2B and C positions last season.

Of course Krod makes the most sense. All those proposals for JJ Putz and what not made me laugh.

I like the idea of signing Manny, but I know it's not going to happen. With that said, I also do not want Dye/Ibanez anywhere near the grass on opening day of CitiField. At that point we may as well just resign Alou. I don't mind seeing Tatis/Murphy platoon, but I really hope Church plays the way he did before he was injured instead of after.
In terms of the 2B and C, I with every other Mets fan on the planet and would like to see Luis Castillo anywhere besides CitiField. I'd even take the Andruw Jones contract for Castillo...

K-Rod most likely will end up signing with the Mets. After that i see Street coming over for Heilman and whome ever. Once that happens they should feel pretty good about their pen. Trust me on this guys, the will have Manny in left field on opening day, it makes to much sense to sign him. Someone said that 6-9 were easy outs and they are 100 percent right. If bring in Man Ram that bulks up the lineup. I think Castillo might bounce back but we'll see.

Only part of the Mets problem was situational hitting but they scored just as many runs as the phillies so their problem was starting pitching not going enough innings and the bullpen sucking. I hope Church can bounce back from his concussion.
Krod or Wood and the Street deal along with signing Cordero and a trade for Bradford if they eat his salary would already make the Mets bullpen better and allow guys like Parnell and Kunz to develop.
Starting pitching should focus on an innings eater like Derek Lowe. I believe signing Brad Penny for they fifth starters spot would be a good idea since it would let Neise develop in AAA.

Can anyone explain to me why any team would prefer any closer to K-Rod with the exception of maybe Papelbon. (And Mo in his prime. Don't jump down my throat Yankee fans) It just seems obvious to me that K-Rod is far superior to all closers in the league especially a guy like Fuentes. Not that I am saying K-Rod and Pap are the only ones that can get it done. I just think to say the Mets "prefer" K-Rod to Fuentes is very very obvious. K-Rod is like a once or twice a generation closer. Unless of course the argument is made based on money. I would assume Fuentes would be much cheaper. Maybe someone could clarify it for me.

Trade Heilman for Street.
Sign K-Rod 3/39.
Sign Wood 2/15
Sign Hoffman 1/8
Bullpen: closer =K-Rod,
8th inning = wood,
7th inning = Hoffman/Street
