Richard Durrett of the Dallas Morning News passes along some of what Rangers GM Jon Daniels said in a radio interview yesterday. Daniels said the Rangers haven't offered Ben Sheets a contract, but acknowledged that he's been in contact with Sheets' agent.
Durrett expects the Rangers to offer the righty a contract, but writes that "it's still a long shot to expect Sheets to pitch" for Texas.

somebody is going to get Sheets for a steal. If he's healthy he is the second best pitcher (to Sabathia) on the market this year and he's going to be paid as the 5th or 6th. He's definitely got #1 stuff.

Rangers need Sheets to steal a team ERA under the mid 6.00's for the 2009 season perhaps philsWSchamps.

i can somewhat see the astros trying to get in on this, if they can move tejada

Wouldn't surprise me to see him in ATL next season, with yet another excuse from the Rangers.
Nothing new.

Im really surprised he hasnt had more interest. Burnett gets 5 years and is just as much an injury risk as Sheet is...

I think a darkhorse team gets Sheets.

Apparently mlb teams with access to medical records see Sheets as a bigger risk than Burnett. Remember the Braves were giving Burnett a 5 year offer and haven't made an offer to Sheets.

Why would Texas offer a contract right now? Let the lower tier market develop first. There is no need to set the bar for the mid-tier FA SP market when the target has enough medical warts to make him less than a prime target for a lot of clubs.

Personally i feel as if a darkhorse team is going to sign Ben Sheets. I have been hearing rumors that the Nationals would be interested in him as their ace and a secondary pitcher like a Kenshin Kawakami, Koji Uehara or Brad Penny would join the rotation if Sheets is acquired. We all know that the Nationals gave about 185 million dollars to spend since they offered it to Teixeira, therefore i can definitely see them pursuing Ben Sheets, a second tier type pitcher and a bat for first base to free up space to trade Austin Kearns or Nick Johnson.

i think the reason teams are hesitant is because all of AJ's injuries came from his TJ surgery and coming back to quick from it. With Sheets he apparently has random injuries to every part of his body and i wouldnt be surprised if he reminded the Braves of Mike Hampton.
I wouldnt mind giving him a 2 year contract. it would get him in and out in time for the new kids to come up. maybe somethin like 2/24-26.
We could even go so far as to have a 6 man rotation. that would take stress off of his arm making him more useful to us and less likely to get injured. Same thing with re-signing smoltz. have a 6 man rotation with both of those guys and they should be fine.
something like
sheets
smoltz
vasquez
jair
campillo
morton/reyes
even if we had a 5 man rotation of
sheets
smotlz
vazquez
jair
campillo
if one of em goes down we have some depth and by starting morton, reyes, hanson, and all the young guys in AAA they will have a little more seasoning before they are needed at the ML level

they need young pitching
trade for ryan tucker
sheets is injury prone

burnett has been on the DL alot, and some of them are non TJ relate

"i can somewhat see the astros trying to get in on this, if they can move tejada"
What team in there right mind would want Tejada. $15 Million last year for .283/13HR/66RBI. I know I wouldn't want him on my team. Maybe 5 years ago, then yeah.
Posted by: dpncharge | December 27, 2008 at 03:47 PM
is sheets an power-pitcher? i think is more finesse and that why teams are skeptical, cuase burnett an power pitcher is understandable why he gets injure often, but an finesse should stay healthy.
IDK just throwing it out there

I can only hope the Rangers , offer Sheets a contract soon . He has all but said he wants to pitch in Texas . Would be good for him and good for the Rangers , with our Firepower . it could make him a 20 game winner . for next 2 years ,were would the market for him go in 2011 , thru the roof . He could be the next , 150 mil pitcher in 2011 . Hes got the stuff , and even if he only won 15 games in 2009 he would be better than we've had in passed years . and a honest move by the owner to WIN. Make a move Nolan , before the price goes up , when other teams need to fill their needs .

Ryan Tucker is described by scouts as someone who sets up his fastball with his fastball. If the Marlins want to trade then we'd like an MLB pitcher.

Rangers can have him...

Sheets is a power pitcher. 4 seam fastball and power curve. Occasionally he uses a change-up. 4-5 per game unless he is having problems with his curve.(in Colorado mostly)
While he has had many injuries, most are not arm or shoulder related like Burnett's are. He had one injury to his shoulder at the end of one year that, in my opinion, led to another injury in a muscle close to the original muscle. He wanted to pitch in the WBC and tried to come back to fast. He had a strained muscle in his forearm at the end of this season. Other than that, his injuries are all non-pitching injuries(ear infection, blisters, finger injury ligaments I think, hamstring) Nothing that should hurt his ability to pitch.

Sheets is way of a bigger injury risk than AJ is. Sheets has a chronic back and ended the season injured, and people are still asking them self that why people looked at AJ not Sheets.

Marlinsman: You don't know Sheets because he is all about power. When he doesn't have it, he is in trouble. Sheets is known in Milwaukee for being a slow starter. He usually only starts getting his best stuff going in the third or fourth innings and it has to do with warming up. He is not a finesse pitcher and his best pitch is by far his power curve (Same reason he CAN'T be a reliever like Kerry Wood). When he is "on" earlier than the third, you know he has potetential to go 9 and have a special game. When he doesn't get it going by the end of the third or if he gives up runs in the 1st or 2nd, you know he is in trouble.
Lloyd4: He has been talked about as a 20 game winner for many years in Milwaukee. If he would have just won 15 that would have been nice. Rumors are that he doesn't condition like he should. He always ends up with injuries and usually those injuries happen when he is needed the most.
DominicanYanks: I agree that Sheets is probably more risky than Burnett. I'd also say that Burnett actually won 18 games last season. Sheets hasn;t won mre than 11 or 12 for most of his career besides his 13 last year and that isn't what you'd expect form an ace. He has the stuff of an ace but does not have what it takes to get through a season it seems. He's a good guy - I hope he does well, but there is a reason Milwaukee has not made an offer on him. They can't risk spending the kind of money Sheets wants based on his track record.

Sheets has been injured every year that Milwaukee was a good team. It is hard to win games when you only score 2 runs. Sheets has had many games where he only gave up 3 or fewer runs and still lost during his career in Milwaukee. Wins is a terrible way to judge pitchers. Sheets hasn't had back problems affect his season in a few years.

I'm surprised the braves aren't interested in Sheets or Lowe. Both would be an improvement over what they currently have.
