Drew, the article actually says that Bako wants a 1 year deal worth half a million and that he would be a good fit for the Cubs, not that he is close to signing with them.

May not be to free up cap space, but it better be for the prospects to do so. If that's the best we could get for a likely Type A free agent with 5+ teams interested, something seems off.

sox should pony up some money sheets
Posted by: glen_quagmire | December 31, 2008 at 09:08 PM
The DeRosa trade and soon to be Marquis trade frees up money to sign Bradley or whomever. Miles is a nice pick up and will be rotated with Fonteno and Theriot throughout the season. It gives Lou more options.

Yeah, you're right. A bit too forward in my wording. Thanks for the tip, man.
Posted by: Drew Silva | December 31, 2008 at 09:10 PM
I get the feeling Lou is going to shuffle people in/out much more in '09.
Posted by: studio179 | December 31, 2008 at 09:15 PM
30m for mr 20 games in the outfield? 30m for a guy whos going to fight pennella before the all star break? yeah great investment

"Asked if Hendry’s dealings meant talks with the Cubs regarding Peavy might reopen, Padres GM Kevin Towers responded with a one-word email: “Doubtful.”"
Didn't Towers already say after the Winter Meetings fiasco that he was done talking to the media about any potential dealings??? So what do people expect him to say now? Geeeez.

if the Cubs sign Paul Bako it wouldnt be a resign because he was on the Reds last year but i got what Drew Silva got becasue Bako has been on the Cubs before
Posted by: joeyvotto | December 31, 2008 at 09:44 PM
I think the cubs are set with a great team full of great players, but I don't see them as a championship contender. Maybe with Pujols, but good luck,
Posted by: IFiredScottBoras | December 31, 2008 at 09:48 PM
If Randy Johnson was too expensive for the Dbacks, there's no way they could sign Sheets.
Posted by: icedrake523 | December 31, 2008 at 09:57 PM
Thanks Joey Votto, better to have clear language up there.

Mr. Schulman has me believing this whole patience thing hopefully the giants can get Pat Burrell or Adam Dunn at a cheap price
heck ill take Bobby Abreu for a low price
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 31, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Burrell or Dunn if we can get them for 2 yrs. No more than that, and they'd have to be willing to play 1st.
They probably won't be up for either, so no Burrell or Dunn for the Giants.
I'm cool with Pablo and Ishi/Phelps platoon this year and go for Holliday next year.

Happy new years guys. I'm freaking packing to go to Cancun. Hollaaaaaaaaaaaa
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 31, 2008 at 10:54 PM
just cause some d@uche from yahoo said this isnt a precursor to a peavy deal doesnt mean anything. kevin towers said any talk about peavy from here on out will not be made public.
Posted by: bkoke | December 31, 2008 at 11:03 PM
bkoke, so instead of using information to make a decision on what is happening, your going to blow off information from a professional sports writer and instead claim that you know more on the situation because you follow baseball from your couch. Impressive.
Posted by: mtzxc | December 31, 2008 at 11:41 PM
did i say its going to happen?
no i said just cause some guy thinks its not doesnt mean its not.
how about all the "professional" sports writers that said a deal was imminent with the cubs?
Posted by: bkoke | December 31, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Giants fans patience ? So far I think they will need it again in 2009 until the sign a hitter, or trade for a hitter. I think they needed a bat more than a 40+ yr old lefty. Typical Giant caca.
I expect Milton Bradley to lose his cool and have a great tussle with Sweet Lou and boy that will be something. I think Bradley had a good thing with the Rangers, plus he could DH. I hope he takes anger mgmt. classes...
Posted by: TripleHHH | December 31, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Who wins Bradley vs Zambrano?
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 01, 2009 at 12:07 AM
Pirates should offer 3/30 to Ben Sheets and become relevant again. With him and maybe one more signing, they could contend in 2010.
Posted by: bigpat | January 01, 2009 at 12:09 AM
bradley! zambrano is a huge pu$$y!
Posted by: bkoke | January 01, 2009 at 12:23 AM
Sheets will be a great signing no matter where it happens. The man can pitch and is a 1A. Wish the mets would sign him right now, before Lowe. if we had Lowe and Sheets we would be unstoppable. BTW there is no way the D-Backs sign sheets..
GOODNIGHT
Posted by: Fish&Mets | January 01, 2009 at 04:02 AM
If you saw Micheal Barrett's face a couple of years ago, you wouldn't call Zambrano a pu$$y.
Posted by: sweetswingingbw | January 01, 2009 at 06:43 AM
Because you give someone a little black eye when you take the first free punch you are tough? haha Fat Z is soft!
Posted by: stlcards16 | January 01, 2009 at 02:04 PM
Seems odd that there is so little action on sheets right now.
Posted by: walkoffblast | January 01, 2009 at 02:06 PM
The cubs should just sign Bradley already, and trade to get Peavy. They need some experienced guys who can perform in october.
Secondly, if they can grab Ben Sheets for a reasonable price (which they should because of injury-proness) they should atleast make a run at him. Imagine that rotation:
Zambrano
Peavy
Dempster
Harden
Sheets
Trade Lilly for Peavy.
Posted by: Alex | January 01, 2009 at 02:10 PM
I do believe the Diamondbacks have a shot at Sheets if they choose to take it.
Posted by: jonathon | January 01, 2009 at 03:25 PM
Alex is not a cubs fan or anything.
Posted by: walkoffblast | January 01, 2009 at 06:07 PM
Alex,
First- Sheets is going to cost to much
Second- Cubs would have to pay most of lilly's contract for that to happen.
Third- that means we would sign all injury prone players.
(Bradley, Sheets,Peavy)
They wouldn't make it through the season without losing at least two of the players they signed
Posted by: Cubsfan60 | January 01, 2009 at 07:23 PM
Yes, Sheets will cost too much and the Cubs don't want another injury prone starter. They already have Harden.
Lilly has a NTC. Even if he did not, the Pads are cutting payroll, not adding to it. They have no use for Lilly.
