I would keep Justin Masterson in the bullen for a year or two until he's more mature. Right now, if Boston can sign a FA starter, that'll be nice. If not, i think it'll be nice to have Clay and Justin rotate around that 5th starter position. Justin masterson can slowly move toward starter by being a long reliefer behind Dice K if Dice K's short inning pitch continues

If the Tigers give up Larish AND Joyce as a PART of a trade package for Jack Wilson, I will be embarrassed to be a Tigers fan. Maybe even more embarrassed than when they signed Dontrelle Willis to his extension.

I believe the proposed deal would be for either one or the other, along with a pitching prospect, but not both.

Good points brought up by Mazz regarding Masterson. He comes inside to be effective vs lefties and hits batters fairly often, or has wild pitches in that regard also from being easier to read with that sidearm/submarine windup of his, so his true calling may indeed be a long relief role, which is what the Sox need, or someone capable of pitching 2-3 innings at a time vs. a lineup not heavy with LH batters. Hope they keep him this off season and are able to use him in this way for 2009, with nearly an entire season under his belt hopefully the high walk total he allowed will go down and his effectiveness vs. lefties will increase a little.

Oh god. Jay Jaffe is a moron. I understand and do agree with Teixeira is a better sign for the Yankees than Sabathia, not only because of the awesome defense, but also because it keeps Teixeira out of the Red Sox' hands (the Sox won't/shouldn't sign CC) but the rest of this is ridiculous.
If the Giants trade Randy Winn, it should be for prospects, NOT a guy who can't even play OF anymore. LOL @ not even taking into account what the other team would want in a trade.
And, I think Lowe will be just fine in the AL, its just that Lowe with a middle infield of Cano and Jeter just doesn't cut it in a non-cupcake division.
If the Yankees want a CF who will not cost them anything in prospects, why not Juan Pierre? I mean, Jaffe has made comments that blatantly implied that Juan Pierre had positive trade value.

FYI: Levelle Neal III says the Twins have broken off talks with Casey Blake. They won't go three years for him.

If EITHER Larish or Joyce are traded for Wilson I will be too embarrassed to be a Tiger fan.
Why is Kahalil Greene worth a relif pitcher with 5 IP in the majors and a PTBNL and one year of Jack Wilson is worth a 23 year old OF who did well his rookie year?
This makes no sense. It would be worse than the Renteria trade.
Posted by: MacRae | December 06, 2008 at 12:10 PM
i think the tigers need to give up on wilson and sign everett or punto. use Larish or Joyce in a package for JJ Putz...plus we would save 5 million signing everett and using that money to sign Biemel, Cruz or use it towards Kerry Wood.

Probably because Detroit wants the Bucs to eat most of Wilson's salary....

I think the Tigers should KEEP Joyce.
SS- Punto or Everett
C- Laird
RP- Wood and/or Cruz
Honestly the only appropriate trade for the guy who is probably our future RF is for another starter. I would actually rather see Joyce be given RF and Ordonez be traded for a starting pitcher.
Posted by: MacRae | December 06, 2008 at 12:23 PM
MacRae-
Wilson was worth a whole win more than Greene, that's why. Khalil was a replacement level player; Wilson was a good bit above replacement player. And, the Padres aren't kicking in salary. If the Pirates kick in salary, then asking for ONE of Larish or Joyce is acceptable.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 12:24 PM
MacRae-
I'll concede one point from my previous post, looking at the numbers again. I don't give up Matt Joyce for Jack Wilson. Joyce was worth more than Wilson last season on a level playing field (not taking into account team control, other costs, etc.).
But, asking for Larish and/or Miner for Wilson is perfectly logical.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 12:30 PM
But it's still a terrible move. When were talking guys like Putno, Wilson and Everett we're not exactly talking cream of the crop shortstops. Trading away 20-25 HR power plus solid RF defense in a 23 year old Joyce for one year of 3 wins is just an awful trade.
Posted by: MacRae | December 06, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Do not give up Larish and Joyce. These two guys have promising futures in the Tigers organization. Just sign someone or let Santiago play there. Not sure why everyone is so down on him.
Sign Everett, any catcher, and 2 of Cruz/Beimel/Wood.

Mozeliak said the Ludwick to Atlanta talk was just rumor...per Bernie M. at his press box.

I would love to see the Bucs get Joyce and Miner for Wilson and Paulino but at the same time I'm still waiting for Chad Hermenson to show up! Joyce is a prospect and far from a shore thing. Jack Wilson is a proven defensive SS with the ability when healthy to hit for AVG. Paulino is lazy and frustrating to watch at times but if motivated could be good. If the Pirates eat salary too I think Detroit is getting the better and it will take a month of watching Jack Wilson play for him to become a fan favorite.

"Sign Everett, any catcher, and 2 of Cruz/Beimel/Wood."
The Tigers don't have the cash this offseason for that.
Joyce + Miner for Wilson and Paulino is an absolute steal for the Pirates. Hell, any deal involving Wilson and Joyce as the centerpieces probably is a steal. I love Wilson. Wilson is a VERY good defensive SS, I know that. You have to take into account things like team control though, and Joyce is under team control for 6 more years, and was VERY solid in his stint in the bigs.
And, Miner for Paulino? Absolute steal.

"The Tigers don't have the cash this offseason for that."
I'm not saying that The Tigers will go out and sign Cruz and Wood, however I don't think anyone knows what exactly The Tigers are willing to spend.
We know for sure that they want to stay around what they spent last year but for the right players it's been suggested that they could bump payroll ever so slightly.
A combo of any of the SS/C they're looking at is going to cost about $6m. That then leaves them with about $8m more dollars to spend before they reach last season's payroll. If they spend that $8m on Wood than it's possible but not likely that Beimel (but not Cruz) could also be had. However, Cruz and Beimel could potentially fit into their budget plans.
I really hope The Tigers know what they have in Joyce and don't waste him on one year of SS defense. It's a ridiculously assinine steal and with what The Pirates are asking for Wilson it's no wonder trade talks for him have gotten railroaded in the past.

"Trading away 20-25 HR power plus solid RF defense in a 23 year old Joyce for one year of 3 wins is just an awful trade."
Do you have a link to that Major League stat? Or is that what he hit in the minors that you're transitioning to the majors?
Posted by: enchinga | December 06, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Enchinga, I'll admit that his stat was BS, but Joyce did slug almost .500 in 3/4ths of a season and got on base at a .340 clip..

Joyce hit 12 in 242 ABs this year.
Marcel projects that Joyce will see 296 ABs, and hit 15 HRs in the process. Extrapolate that into a full season (500-600ABs), and that's easily 20-25 HR power.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 02:53 PM
I probably need to clarify that the 242 ABs were his 242 MLB ABs.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 02:54 PM
But then, you could argue that Joyce's 2008 was a fluke, so take this with a grain of salt.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 02:55 PM
He has the potential to become a 20-25 homerun guy annually, with plenty of doubles, and that power could begin to come out in the very near future.
Joyce is another classic corner outfield, with the arm for right, but the instincts, athleticism, and speed to handle left field in spacious Comerica Park. Former Manager Matt Walbeck likened Joyce’s overall ability to that of Jim Edmonds, and having already impressed the front office types in Detroit, he could get a chance in Detroit by the start of 2009.
This is one scouting report

I can find more praise of his power if you're really gonna rake me over the coals on this one.
Posted by: MacRae | December 06, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Why are people saying that the Tigers should sign guys like Adam Everett. He can't hit worth a lick. Ramon Santiago is a better hitter and may be just as good a fielder.
