« Odds and Ends: Nelson, Quentin, Penny | Main | Mets Make Offer To Lowe »
Having missed out on the Teixeira Sweepstakes, the Orioles appear to be looking at Richie Sexson as an option for filling their current vacancy at first base, says Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun.
According to Schmuck, "Club officials apparently have had at least one conversation with Sexson's agent, Casey Close, though the depth of their interest is uncertain."

that is one serious downgrade from tex, might as well try a young farm player, cheaper and it couldnt possibly be much worse

Wow, what a bummer for Orioles fans. I agree 100% with 04Forever...if it's come to that then let the kids play.

What about K. Millar
Posted by: TripleHHH | December 30, 2008 at 06:58 PM
This is becoming pathetic and sad. The Orioles should stop looking under rocks and ant hills and just place Scott at DH, Huff at 1B, and Reimold/Montanez in LF.

what about ty wigginton? couldnt he play a decent 1B?

As a Mariners Fan, I feel bad for the Orioles. If It's a minor league deal, it might be ok.

id LOVE millar to come back to the red sox, his attitude is very good in the clubhouse, very inclusive, friendly and helpful. he still can hit some home runs to, sox fans would love to see him back

Good grief! The Orioles desperately need to move into full rebuild mode but somehow they just can't. What is the point of signing these retreads?
Posted by: MickS | December 30, 2008 at 07:09 PM
as a red sox fan, i feel bad for both the mariners and the orioles
Posted by: glen_quagmire | December 30, 2008 at 07:10 PM
This is ridiculous if we sign him. I don't want Millar back but would take him over Sexson. Oscar Salazar would do just as good or better than either of these guys. SAD!!!

As an Orioles fan...I wish you could get your head out of your ***.

You guys want La-La-Laroche?

i agree with 04forever, i'd love to see millar back in a sox uniform. maybe he could be what sean casey was this year. i'd still love to see trot nixon back, but rocco baldelli wouldnt be too bad pending how treatable his condition is, i read in the andruw jones discussion that there was actually a somewhat reasonable idea. sox trade lugo to the dodgers for andruw jones, but it gets clouded by the whole, resiging furcal. im probably gonna be ridiculed for saying this, but andruw jones could have the ability to rake in boston, and lugo did best in LA.

The tragedy is that the Indians would probably be happy to deal from their surplus of young 1B: Garko, Aubrey, Jordan, Head. Not world beaters but young, cheap, with some upside and attainable for little in return.

What a Schmuck for even writing an article on Richie Sexson. He can platoon left-sided benches.
Posted by: MattsdodgersSD | December 30, 2008 at 08:25 PM
Why is it that, somehow, every blurb about ANY team turns into a discussion involving the Red Sox?

As an O's fan, I would rather have me at third base than Sexson....I'll strike out 180 times for half of whatever he gets!
Posted by: Finite Risk | December 30, 2008 at 09:56 PM
Holy Snikes! The article doesn't even mention Millar OR the RedSox.

Any GM who gives Sexson anything more than a non-roster invite should be summarily fired. Or perhaps executed.

Sexson plays 1st.

You've GOT to be sh#@*ing me!!!

I doubt it. This doesn't fit with the Orioles' other efforts this offseason (and last).
If they sign him, it's as a role-player / bench guy only.
I like KevinB's thoughts above. Montanez showed last season that he wasn't outclassed, and it's about time to give Reimold a chance.

Isn't Dave Kingman available????
I hope Andy called him collect.

Rather than waste money on yet another loser like Sexson, why not bring Manny to Baltimore? The up-side is that it would be that much more incentive for all of those Boston and NY fans to continue taking the train down to Camden and scarf up the O's seats. Manny doesn't play 1B yet, but I don't see why he couldn't learn. The Orioles really have nothing to lose, especially with Peter Angelos' reign of tirrany in Baltimore. At least the "Manny Show" would give fans something to look forward to, other than being eliminated before the end of July yet again!

Agreed,
At least look at Abreu.

Why is it bad to sign sexson? The Orioles are trying to allow players the time they need to develop in lower levels. Throwing Reimold in there when he is not ready makes to sense. Scott is a good place holder in left and will shift over to dh when reimold is ready. If I was the O's I would do everything in my power to move Huff and Roberts. Both are at their highest value. Signing sexson is a cheap way to fill a spot. You never know he may just hit 30 homers again and could have some value later on. Now wasting over a million on mark hendrickson is a differnt thing. The O's could have signed a plethora of better pitchers for near that cost. It's going to be depressing watching him throw 150 innings with a 6 era!
