I don't see Millar starting for the O's and will be disappointed if that is the case. At this point I think the best he could do would be a platoon player somewhere or a backup. The Japanese pitchers are not top pitchers but could be help I suppose until the younger arms are ready. As for Teixeira the pros on that list outweigh the cons in my opinion, and if the O's want him they will have to outbid everyone and hope he has a desire to play there, there wont be any hometown discount. And for what its worth if I remember correctly there was a report that he encouraged Matt Wieters to reach an agreement with the O's after they drafted him.

IMO Tex doesn't want a ring. he wants to get paid. right now his best bet is to stay with LAA. NYY can afford him but, is he after money? or a ring? Bos. can afford him but they would have to shake up the infield.

Teixeira is a must sign. The Orioles will have the pitching eventually, the question is would Tex turn down the most money to go play for a team that would win sooner because I see the Orioles topping any rival offer (including the Nats).

To Iftyg33: If Ray pitches good he will reclaim the closers role in my opinion. Sherrill may be traded or reverted back to a lefty specialist. Izturis stinks, the O's should try to acquire a real shortstop of the future, stopgap has become an all to familiar term when it comes to the O's SS situation. I would have Oscar Salazar over Fahey on the bench also. Also at this point Adam Jones does not have the OBP to be a good number 2 hitter.

Iftyg33: tha lineup looks more like the 2010 opening day lineup, you can't expect wieters to be there.
I would also like to see Millar come back because he is such a good leader in the clubhouse. He is the reason they started the whole Orioles Magic campaign again.

BraveOrioles, i definately agree with you about chris ray. but at this point, coming off major surgery, sherrill is the closer. Also, Johnson would make a great closer if his 2009 is like his 2008.
Why shouldnt weiters be there? If hes not on the opening day roster, he should spend about a month in AAA and get called up almost immediately, kind of like evan longoria last year.

Red Sox fan here, saw Wieters, in Double AA last year, he definetly can be the starter on opening day. No doubt in my mind. He is going to be a thorn in our side for long time, kid is the real deal. Not only great hitter, great great arm. Sure wish Sox had him.

Orioles got some good young talent coming up, maybe not this year, but next they will be tough. AL East is going to be a dogfight. Bring Wieters up now to get used to Major Leagues, probably win ROY, be all set for their young arms next year.

Although chances are the owner wouldn't allow this, I think the orioles should sign Teixeira and Furcal. First of all, it would make their already good lineup very good and improving. Second, it would greatly improve the infield defense for when the Tillman, Matusz and Arrieta get called up for good. Then the lineup would be:
Roberts 2B
Furcal SS
Markakis RF
Teixeira 1B
Huff DH
Jones CF
Scott LF
Mora 3B
Hernandez/Weiters C
This also gives them a great balance of lefties, righties and switch hitters in their lineup. It would also have to be accompanied by a Roberts extension, as he is one of the top 2B in MLB right behind Utley and alongside Pedroia.

drchstpunk, its not that i dont like that lineup, i just dont see how the o's can afford it.
also, i think that macphail and angelos would have to overspend a lot to get furcal here. i doubt he would want to come to a team that is 2-3 years away from contending
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 06, 2008 at 07:38 AM
I don't think it's an issue of affording it per se, it's an issue of Angelos ponying up for it, and I agree it probably won't happen. Still just wanted to put it out there, see what other people think.

I dont think Furcal, but I think Tiexiera is good chance. My Sox and the whole world going for him, have a feeling he is going back to his hometown, and sign with you.
Interested in Lugo at short. Just joking.

Orioles SHOULD NOT sign Teixeira. Period.

Why is everyone so high on Montanez? He is awful.
Also, if Fahey is on this team next year, I will kill myself. He makes Matos look like Brooks.
Posted by: exitfare | December 06, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Some are high on Montanez because he was a highly touted toolsy SS 1st round pick when he was drafted by the Cubs (I believe). He's had a lot of struggles in the past but, in the Os system, he had one of the best AA seasons last year at Bowie.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 07, 2008 at 12:43 AM
Montanez also won the eastern league triple crown last year despite missing a month of the season after being called up.
I am pretty tired of Brandon Fahey as well. I have never bought into whatever potential the Orioles have tried to sell. I think arms like John Garland and Randy Wolf would be effective stop-gaps (sorry for the phrase) until our young arms mature.
O's should make a strong run at Tex. Between Mautz, Arrieta, Tillmen, and Burgeson the Orioles have a solid core of young starters that should be ready by 2010. The last thing we should do is throw fat contract offers to guys like AJ Burnett (especially considering his history with injuries)
