« Yankees Sign A.J. Burnett | Main | Indians Close To Deal With Wood »
The Orioles do not want to pay Daniel Cabrera's $4MMish salary in 2009, that much is certain. Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun says Andy MacPhail is trying to trade Cabrera, and otherwise he'll be non-tendered.
Cabrera, 28 in May, saw his strikeout rate plummet in 2008. He also lost a couple miles per hour off his fastball.

The main reason he lost speed on his fastball is because he stopped throwing a 4 seamer and started throwing a 2 seamer

Why would they admit that they will non-tender him if they're trying to trade him?Hey let's just throw away that small amount of leverage we had left.

This guy is really wild but i love his arm though. hope the Yanks offer him a minor league contract if in fact he get non-tendered
Posted by: eLneneM360 | December 12, 2008 at 04:51 PM
package him with Brian Roberts and send them both to the White Sox... thanks

I think it's obvious enough where there's no loss of leverage. A team would acquire him to avoid competing with other teams when he'd be a FA.

i hope the yankees take him for a minor leaque contract just in case burnett get injured.

Astros is my opinion as well...

I would like to see the Padres try and get him, that would be a great place for him to figure out his stuff. But the cost of 4 million might be too much for the padres, unless they deal Peavy/Giles.
Posted by: Thumper | December 12, 2008 at 04:56 PM
hes a decent pitcher...but in arbitration he'll make about 5 million..who wants to pay that? he did not pitch TERRIBLE last year.

I could see the Cardinals being interested in this guy. Maybe working with Dave Duncan could help him out.
Posted by: CardinalFaninIL | December 12, 2008 at 04:58 PM
I think he'd look good on a team that plays in a pitcher's park with a good pitching coach. The Mets should go for this... He could be an okay replacement for Ollie Perez. Maybe even Washington?

He is a towering presence when he's on the mound. How hard does this guy throw? Any team that doesn't look into trying him is crazy.

We all know Don Coopers track record of turning around young pitchers. So, with that in mind, what do you think of trading a package along the lines of Fields, Getz/Lillibridge, Marquez/Broadway... or something else, whatever it will take to the Orioles for Daniel Cabrera and Brian Roberts.... I think this could make alot of sense for both teams

"He is a towering presence when he's on the mound. How hard does this guy throw? Any team that doesn't look into trying him is crazy."
He's got a lot of major problems. For one, he's got MAJOR anger issues (Once instigating a benches clearing brawl after balking in a run), is incredibly wild (In terms of strike zone, not personality per se) and has TERRIBLE peripheral stats. He's got a career 1.5+ WHIP, a lackluster K/BB ratio and has only managed 200 innings once. Four million dollars is an absolute ripoff for him and I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole unless the Orioles ate a large chunk of it.

Some team in need of a power bullpen arm should sign him if he is non-tendered.
Hell, why not the Tigers? Between Zumaya, Rodney, and Cabrera someone is bound to close games. He could be a terrifying reliever.
Posted by: RWS | December 12, 2008 at 05:46 PM
the succos could use him
Posted by: yokedog22 | December 12, 2008 at 05:47 PM
I would love for the White Sox to trade for him and Roberts. It would bring down the asking price for Roberts as the O's wouldn't be on the hook for Cabrera's 4 million this year.

Lillibridge
Fields
Broadway
Cole Armstrong
Mcdougal maybe eat 1.5M
For
Cabrera
Roberts
wont happen but we can dream.

As an O's fan, I've always had a lot of faith in Daniel, and he started out last season strong, but outside of his anger, his biggest problem is confidence.
Once he is down about something, it is so hard to work him out of it, and sadly, that's going to be the story of his entire career.

As a substitute for Burnett, sadly this has the Braves written all over it.

Thats exactly what i was thinking. Im sure it wont cost much, just one or two low minor leaguers id guess.

"As a substitute for Burnett, sadly this has the Braves written all over it."
Not really. There is still Sheets, Lowe, and Oliver Perez, who all make sense in one way or another for Atlanta. Cabrera may be brought in, but it won't be as a backup plan for Burnett.

so going to be an Astros with The O's eating half his salary and The Astros give two prospects of mid potential.......
Posted by: AstrosCoverage.blogspot.com | December 12, 2008 at 06:48 PM
Cabrera in a Tigers uniform would be intersting, if for nothing else to see what the locker room would be like with him and Sheffield. (Remembering the bench clearing fight where Sheff and Cabrera sought each other out)
Posted by: highVoltage | December 12, 2008 at 07:11 PM
Cabrera has loads of potential, its just hes a confusing guy.
Can be really hot sometimes or just be awful at the start of inning 1.
Posted by: cmdterps44 | December 12, 2008 at 07:13 PM
What's with this nonsense about the O's picking up salary? They can walk away from the guy for free.
You don't pay $2M cash for a midlevel prospect or two. Heck not all first round picks get $2M.
Posted by: davearm | December 12, 2008 at 07:14 PM
speaking of nonsense those roberts rumors are terrible. sox have to pony up more than that.
Posted by: roguesaw | December 12, 2008 at 10:08 PM
You're right roguesaw, those weren't very good returns for Roberts, but I think those were made in sense with getting Cabrera with Roberts. If the O's wanted to get rid of all of his salary, they would have to take a lower return to get Roberts. Now that they've non-tendered him, they are on the hook for all of his salary I'm guessing.
Posted by: rype123 | December 13, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Rype123: the O's non-tendered him so they wouldn't have to pay any of his salary. Now if they tendered him and then released him in spring training they would have to pay his entire salary.
Posted by: Steveo26 | December 13, 2008 at 11:39 AM
You're right, I wasn't thinking that. I forgot he wasn't on a contract, that he was going into arbitration
