Oh sheesh.

Trading big Z would bring in a good bat too!! I dont see this happening tho, but its a good idea.
Posted by: cubs land | December 09, 2008 at 02:51 PM
trade for peavy then trade zambrano that would be dumb
Posted by: Tough | December 09, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Has anyone else noticed that Perrotto magically hears the most outlandish rumors?? Seriously, daily.
Posted by: weasel425 | December 09, 2008 at 02:52 PM
I hope this is way out there...way out there beyond the rational thought region.
Posted by: Gbizle7 | December 09, 2008 at 02:53 PM
Interesting. What's Zambrano have left on his contract?
Posted by: jlowrance | December 09, 2008 at 02:53 PM
Also I'd love to trade Z, I think he'll be overpaid in a year or two. I just don't see the Cubs parting with him.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 02:53 PM
Perrotto is a dumbass. Z is the Cubs' best pitcher
Posted by: OctoberFlurry | December 09, 2008 at 02:53 PM
Peavy is considerably less of a douchebag than Zambrano, but this would still basically be two steps forward, one step back.
Posted by: helloelan | December 09, 2008 at 02:54 PM
I'm about to turn my computer off these are just getting absurd.
Posted by: bartendermlb | December 09, 2008 at 02:54 PM
"Interesting. What's Zambrano have left on his contract?"
08:$15M, 09:$17.75M, 10:$17.875M, 11:$17.875M, 12:$18M, 13:$19.25M vesting player option
Is there any team out there that's realistically going to take that on?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 02:54 PM
May not be a bad time to move Zambrano. He has a lot of innings on his arm. Seems like he's a potential breakdown candidate. I gues it would depend on the return.

CubbyFan,
I personally never saw the Cubs getting rid of Wood either..but...
Posted by: bartendermlb | December 09, 2008 at 02:55 PM
he just signed a massive extension, hence why its crazy
Posted by: 04Forever | December 09, 2008 at 02:55 PM
This is a funny rumor.
Posted by: cubs land | December 09, 2008 at 02:55 PM
mike young + high level prospect (not feliz/holland/andrus).
any takers?
Posted by: tmoney352 | December 09, 2008 at 02:55 PM
"Perrotto is a dumbass. Z is the Cubs' best pitcher"
Strongly disagree. His numbers are trending downward, now is the time to sell if you can, but I doubt the Cubs front office would ever.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 02:55 PM
This would be another step in my philosophy, which is the cubs will win the world series if they get rid of everyone from the 2003 curse team. Wood was the start, now only Z and Aramis are left.
Posted by: grathanial | December 09, 2008 at 02:56 PM
trade "Z" to the Phils... We'll give you Eaton and Jenkins... It's better than you guys trying to rape us with that Jason " I might as well throw the ball into the left field rafters" Marquis deal...
Posted by: allabouthephils | December 09, 2008 at 02:56 PM

Yankess.
Posted by: jlowrance | December 09, 2008 at 02:58 PM
"mike young + high level prospect (not feliz/holland/andrus)."
Nah. Cubs seem content to go with Theriot at SS. Doubt they'd view Young as an upgrade.
If they move Z, it's going to be for an OF.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 02:58 PM
Z's numbers are trending downward, and he's not that durable.
This is a great time to sell high.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Z has a no-trade clause.
This reeks of a "rumor" someone just plain made up.
Posted by: cowsarecool220 | December 09, 2008 at 03:02 PM
LOL Perrotto brings the comic relief to this rumor crazed Tuesday, lol.
Posted by: sharx | December 09, 2008 at 03:02 PM
HHHHmmmm yeah i wouldnt be surprised if the cubs do that!!!!! they already burned their farm system to the ground.... so whats next for the yankz oooops i mean cubs, i hope i can live 100 more years so i can see 200 yrs of failure, and as a northsider i see a lot of sad faces on blue hats while i laugh in my black hat
Posted by: MENACE | December 09, 2008 at 03:05 PM
Not to mention with 4 years 73MM left on his agreement plus a player option, he's not much more expensive than what Lowe is looking at. I'd say that Z definitely has a lot of value at that price, and I wouldn't personally mind seeing him moved IF we get Peavy.
Posted by: Bdlugz | December 09, 2008 at 03:06 PM
I don't know why this is so crazy. The only players who should be untouchable is... NO ONE. That being said, its a different story trying to find a good match. That may be near impossible with the dollars owed to Zambrano
Posted by: MVPujols | December 09, 2008 at 03:07 PM
Menace, you know the Sox had a higher salary than the Cubs last year, right? You done looking stupid now?
Posted by: Bdlugz | December 09, 2008 at 03:07 PM
Does not compute...isn't the point of the Peavy trade to make Peavy and Zambrano their 1 - 2 punch at the top of the rotation?
Posted by: scottandwtb | December 09, 2008 at 03:10 PM
What other big bats out there are both available and equal value to Zambrano? Holliday's already gone, Pujols is untouchable, they already have a 1B in Lee so no need for Howard or Fielder, Braun is probably untouchable, A-Rod's not going anywhere...
Posted by: Ink&Paper | December 09, 2008 at 03:13 PM
CubbyFan23 - what outfielder you want? Outside Hamilton i think they are all fair game. Borbon? A legit leadoff hitter who can play center? Cruz? (though even as a Rangers fan I'd be weary that he won't ever come to fruit in bigs).
I think Mike Young + Julio Borbon is a good start to a deal.
PS - this is never going to happen. But fun to think about.
Posted by: tmoney352 | December 09, 2008 at 03:14 PM
wait, wait, wait, you guys have it all wrong. perrotto's source is the same one who told roman madrowski he saw peavy singing "go cubs go" in a vegas bar sunday night.
anyway, i think z might eat hendry's head if hendry asked him to waive his NTC. mind you i wouldn't be totally opposed to the trade, might be a nice way to get some good players on the farm
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 09, 2008 at 03:18 PM
How about Zambrano to the Rangers for Michael Young, Engel Beltre and Martin Perez?
The Rangers get their ace and get out of Youngs contract, while not losing any of their elite prospects.
The Cubs get a nice top of the order bat who can play any of the infield positions other than first, as well as two very interesting and talented prospects.
This trade is probably too good for Chicago though, as I expect Big Z to decline quickly over the next few years. And that's coming from a Cub fan.

"trade "Z" to the Phils... We'll give you Eaton and Jenkins... It's better than you guys trying to rape us with that Jason " I might as well throw the ball into the left field rafters" Marquis deal..."
Spoken like a true Phan. ...Right.
Perrotto finds the most ludicrous rumors that almost always carry no merit. Amusing as all get-out, but let's think about this:
Zambrano to the Yankees. This was not a far-fetched thought prior to the fat contract extension. This would give the Yanks a contract similar to that of Derek Lowe and a player who's significantly more valuable, being younger and having had more success with the Cubs.
And for those who think Zambrano is the Cubs' best pitcher, I agree only to an extent. He's going to be 28 and had a decent season, but based on his slot in the rotation, he's not as effective an ace as he is an SP2. Ted Lilly, given his spot in the rotation, typical match-ups, and contract dollars ($8 million in 2008), is the better of the two. And I believe Rich Harden projects as a far better option over a full season than Zambrano.
Z has a ton of innings under his belt already and has often been criticized for inconsistency, fatigue, and temper getting in the way of his focus. He seems more a liability these days than a true "ace". Can he get traded? Sure, if some team is willing to trade a solid bat and pitching prospect(s) for him.
Michael Young and someone not named Feliz, Andrus, or Holland would not work simply because Young's contract is pretty unattractive. Plus I don't think the Cubs would settle for anything less than top-dollar prospects in return.
All that being said, this rumor seems pretty groundless amid all the other issues the Cubs currently face. I don't see much reason to over-analyze it.
