« Felipe Lopez Signs With Diamondbacks | Main | Four Teams Express Interest In Abreu »
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Phillies worked late Thursday night trying to see free agent lefty Jamie Moyer. Heyman says:
Moyer, 46, is believed likely to sign a two-year deal for about $15 million, though it's uncertain whether anything with Moyer is completed.

Two years at $15MM seems reasonable for both parties. I sounds like they finally met in the middle.

Is anyone else worried that the Phils will have committed $45M or so in the last 24 hours to a pair of guys with a combined age of 83?

i'm worried about year two more than year one. would've rather had one year and an option. They'd better go spend the difference in cost of Burrell vs Ibanez though.
Don't go getting cheap when season tix went up too. Sign another bullpen arm. maybe someone to replace Condrey.
CL-Lidge
RH-Madson
RH-Durbin
RH-Juan Cruz
LH-Romero
LH-Eyre
that works for me.
Wonder if this stop them from getting Lowe. I'd be worried he'd go cheapo to the Mets or Braves (if they don't get Burnett).

FWIW, people were saying it was too risky last time they signed Moyer.
I'm okay with it but I would like to see the Phils go after another good starter as well. Lowe and Perez would be nice options and it would be great to keep them away from the Mets.

C'mon, Moyer has grandkids to feed, give him a contract!

I have no worries with these two signing (if Moyer actually signs it) - I still think that adding Lowe or Perez would make the rotation the best in the NL.
The Chan Ho Park rumor would be a nice addition to the pen, we know he can go 2-3 innings if needed, and a spot starter, fill-in if injury guy.
Still figuring the Phils to sign an extra bench OF (right handed) to fill So Taguchi's role from last season

Still say the Mets should have offered him a contract. He's a Marlin killer, and the Mets wouldn't have to face him anymore. I hate when the Mets have to face Jamie Moyer. They can't hit the guy. Plus he beats the hell out of a Jason Marquis for a 5th starter, won't cost a draft pick, and has had success in the NLE. I wonder if 2/18 or 2/20 could have lured him away.

Why do you people think 15M over two years for a 46 year old guy is reasonable?
Only one guy in the HISTORY of MLB has started games past his age 46 season and that's Phil Niekro. You can give guaranteed money for something that has basically NEVER happened. That's just throwing money away.

FYRE,
you can get a mannequin to fill Taguchi's role. he had that one double late in the year that was big, other than that, that was a waste of 1MM.

I agree Champ!
Fact is, we still need another Righty OF off the bench.
Which brings me to this question... Where is Werth Playing? Full-time RF or back to platooning?
I thought he earned full-time play.
Posted by: FyreKnight | December 12, 2008 at 08:36 PM
Werth has definitely earned full time with Dobbs still filling in occasionally to give Ibanez or Feliz a night off. Just hope Dobbs was as clutch as he was last season.
Re-signing Moyer would be a good deal for the pitching and mentoring. Hamels and Myers both needed him this year (Happ or Carrasco as well). I mean just look at what he did last season at age 46. Fluke? Perhaps, his home/away splits last year...
Home- 4.61 era with a .294 ba average through 91.2 ip, 109 hits allowed, and 11 hr's allowed.
Away- 2.92 era with .232 ba average through 104.2 ip, 90 hits allowed, and 9 hr's allowed.
Start Moyer away as much as possible?

yes Werth is definitely a full time right fielder. I think we're set and agree we do need another RH bat off the bench though as well as another right hander in the pen. I'd rather have Cruz that way when/if Madson leaves after this year he can step into the 8th inning role.
