« Derrick Turnbow Derby | Main | Manny Ramirez Rumors: Thursday »
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are close to signing catcher Ryan Doumit to an extension. Doumit, 28, had a breakout year with a .318/.357/.501 line in 465 plate appearances. He's arbitration-eligible for the first time.
Kovacevic learned that talks with Nate McLouth's agent for an extension are "close to dead," according to his agent. The two sides were never close on the dollars. McLouth is under team control through 2011 anyway.

Cant help it.

Awesome. Keep Doumit out of the AL, please. Same with McLouth.

forget the Yanks... the Pirates are the Cubs actual AAA team... that team in Iowa is just a decoy... Hendry needs to pry this guy just like he did Aramis... lefthanded... outfielder... has pop... can lead off... he fits the bill perfectly...

@phils... maybe you "smell" that because that's been known the entire offseason.... thanks for the groundbreaking insight. It's not gonna happen regardless.
@Blue... That Ramirex trade was obviously one of the worst the league's seen in a long time. But to expect that to happen again is ridiculous. By the way, when's the last time the Cubbies won a championship.
I realize we've been the laughing stalk of the league for the past 16 years. Things are changing now though, and to come on here day after day and see ridiculous comments from you mo-mos is gettin old.
WE WILL.

BuccoNation thank you for putting some retards in place. We, as Pirate fans, ain't gonna put up with this crap everyday. Some MLBTR commentators need to go back to the 1st grade and make stuff out of Play-Doh since that's probably the most productive thing these jagoffs have ever done.
Posted by: BadAndy | December 18, 2008 at 09:59 AM
No problem Andy, that stuff gets old real quick, good to see another Buccaneer over here.

Yes, the Cubs have taken the Pirates to the cleaners a time or two, but who can predict the future? The Cubs themselves have been burned in trades (i.e. Lou Brock). I would find it hard to believe that the Bucs would move McClouth, but if they did, the Cubs might have some interesting pieces to offer. I am sure that Felix Pie would be included, and the Cubs have depth in pitching to deal from. Other players that the Cubs would hate to move, but for McClouth, you might expect Fontenot and Marshall's names to come up.

I wouldn't mind Pie, but you can keep Marquis. I think Nate is making a mistake not signing now. It does make me feel good that he must believe 2008 wasn't the exception. If he puts up another year like last year then Pirates fans will be thrilled and him waiting on an extension will be the correct call. I wouldn't be upset if Neal trade Nate or Doumit, their values may never be higher. That said, I don't think anyone will meet Neal's asking price.

Pirates would go straight after Cedeno. They might also go after Marshall a long with Cedeno.

". the Pirates are the Cubs actual AAA team... that team in Iowa is just a decoy... Hendry needs to pry this guy just like he did Aramis... lefthanded... outfielder... has pop... can lead off... he fits the bill perfectly..."
Who was the Pirates GM when the Aramis Ramirez trade was done again?
Now, who is the current Pirates GM?
Posted by: melonis rex | December 18, 2008 at 12:53 PM
If the Pirates move McLouth, it will probably not be to the Cubs. The only appealing prospect the Cubs have is Vitters, and the Pirates have these two prospects named Alvarez and LaRoche for 3B.
Jayson Werth is a free agent after the 2009 season. I could see the Pirates look to trade McLouth to the Phillies for a package involving guys like Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald, etc. Yes, Phillies fans, McLouth will rightfully cost Carrasco. Braves for a package built around Tommy Hanson would also be ideal. Giants for a package involving Alderson/Bumgarner also sounds sweet. I think the objective is pitching with frontline upside.
The ideal targets are prospects who aren't MLB ready, but have really high upside. Preferrably slated to be up at about the same time as McCutchen/Alvarez, etc.
Now, before someone retorts with "The Phils/Braves won't trade those guys", remember, McLouth is really really good, and is under cheap control/way below market value (arbitration is cheap compared to FA deals). I'm just throwing out hypotheticals.

alright pirates fans calm down. we know both of you love McLouth and have good reason to, he's a great player.
And Melonis why would the Phils do that when we have Victorino around the same service time and while not as good, not worth trading away our best pitcher.
Vic and CC jr > McLouth.
No deal.

"Braves for a package built around Tommy Hanson would also be ideal."
Hanson is worth more than McLouth. What has McLouth done? What has Hanson done? Wow, McLouth won a Gold Glove. Hanson has already won an MVP Award.

Trading McLouth now would make a lot of sense. It might be a very unpopular move, but it would be selling high. Nothing from his minor league or major league career indicates he will ever come close to a .853 OPS like he had this past year. His minor league OPS, for his entire minor league career, was under .800. I would not be opposed to trading him now for top dollar if it yields 2-3 good to very good prospects.

gunsnascar
using your thinking in reverse ...
how about any 2 of
brandon moss
ronny paulhino
bryan bullington
chris gomez
with
jack wilson
for ryan theriot
Posted by: crash | December 18, 2008 at 06:03 PM
guns, that's typical Cub fan thinking his junk is worth something. You have two failed prospects, a backup middle infielder, an outfielder that can't hit his weight that just got cut by the Royals and a grossly overpriced 5th starter.
They are under no pressure to trade McLouth, they control him for the next 3 years.
Posted by: indybucfan | December 18, 2008 at 06:16 PM
Crash, are you kidding me? In case you didn't notice, Jack Wlson and Brandon Moss are the only 2 of those 5 that are still on the Pirates. Paulino was traded and both Bullington and Gomez became free agents.
