« Angels Are Fuentes' 'First Choice' | Main | Braves Interested In Kawakami »
Reds GM Walk Jocketty told MLB.com's Mark Sheldon that he's interested in three players who became free agents after being non-tendered by their former clubs: Willy Taveras, Ty Wigginton and Aaron Miles.
Jocketty said Taveras could play in center field, Wigginton's a backup in case they don't get their first choice of outfielders and Miles could work if the Reds don't re-sign Jerry Hairston.
Wigginton played in the outfield 30 times for the Astros this year, but John Fay heard from Jocketty that a Wigginton deal could move Edwin Encarnacion to left field.

I think Ty Wigginton is going to be the bargain of the winter. Someone is going to get a good deal.

Just say no to Tavares. Wigginton I can live with. His non-tender is a mystery since he is coming off a pretty decent year. Miles doesn't look any better than what the Reds already have.

If the Reds sign Wigginton it's bye bye to Edwin Encarnacion. I hope the Giants actually want him.
Posted by: jesum crowe | December 13, 2008 at 01:15 PM
Now I understand the appeal of Tavarez with his speed but I don't care how many bases you steal, putting up a .296 SLG is horrendous.

Rockies want to give the job to Spillbourhgs and Taverez had a good season, so he would get a hefty raise. He might have some medical problems, but i think it's due to the economy.
Taverez is perfect for Center with the Reds. Him and Dickerson can platoon. Id also like Gathright to platoon with Taverez, or play center himself. Gathright is really fast, and can steal a ton of bases in Cincinnati. He still has potential.
Wiggington is going to be our left fielder? Hes our "Right-handed slugger?" Ugh....we better sign another pitcher if we sign Taverez and Wiggington.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 13, 2008 at 01:17 PM
PLEASE SIGN TAVARES.
I am deathly afraid that the Nationals will sign him if someone else doesn't do so quickly.
so Reds, White Sox...hurry up and sign him please!
protect Jim Bowden from himself!

Reds will not trade Encarnacion if they sign Wiggington. If Wiggington is signed that means we didnt get a RIGHT HANDED slugger...so why would we trade our best right handed power hitter? Walt JUST said Wiggington will be that outfielder.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 13, 2008 at 01:21 PM
Wigginton was non-tendered because the Astros are cheap and dumb.
Posted by: Chunk23 | December 13, 2008 at 01:21 PM
Willy Taveras? when did Corey Patterson change his name?
Wigginton looks great for LF. if Wiggy is plan B though, im worried about who plan A might be. who out there is better and cheaper than Wiggy right now? and i have to say im very excited that Jocketty is open to the media about the team's plans. Krivsky was like a CIA spook in the way he ran the team. its refreshing to think that instead of being blind-sided by the signing of Willy Taveras i will have seen it coming days ahead of time and will have had time to prepare myself.

I don't understand what the hell the 'Stros were thinking in non-tendering Wigginton. The guy put up a .876 OPS and can play 5 positions. Unless he is somehow seriously injured, there is no excuse for that idiocy.
"Now I understand the appeal of Tavarez with his speed but I don't care how many bases you steal, putting up a .296 SLG is horrendous."
Ignore the power numbers. If his .296 SLG was a result of a .296 AVG, that wouldn't be such a bad thing, especially if he drew enough walks to turn that .296 AVG into a .345 OBP.
Posted by: AA | December 13, 2008 at 02:06 PM
Sure, sign Tavares and Jerry Hairston Jr and add them to Dickerson and Hopper. That way, Baker can start JHJ no matter what and use the worst of the other three to be the back up.
I guess since Baker can't have his Boy Patterson back then he is telling Ca$htellini to order Jocketty to "do whatever it takes" to sign Tavares.
Posted by: ctownboy | December 13, 2008 at 02:43 PM
Tavarez at center for the Reds wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. He'll be a short-term signing, maybe a year or two, until the Reds young guys are ready. He's better than Patterson offensively, as he can at least get on base. And he's a centerfielder. Most CFs don't even have big power numbers, so his .296 SLG isn't even that bad, as long as he can get his ass on base and get some steals, jumpstart some offense.
I like the Wigginton at 3rd and EE at LF idea. It'll improve the infield defense a little, as I think Wigginton is much better defensively than EE. This'll make their infield look like Votto, Phillips, Keppinger, Wigginton, which doesn't look that bad. Plus, it'll make the outfield look like EE, Tavarez, Bruce.
They wouldn't have blown their payroll by that much with those small signings.

Taveras
There is no universe any of us live in where a .296 SLG isn't that bad. It is horrid.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 13, 2008 at 02:52 PM
Ctown, Jerry Hairston earned his playing time last year. Maybe you missed that the Reds were extremely better when he played. I'm not saying he can duplicate that. Quit whining about things that haven't even freakin' happened.
Out of all three options I like the idea of Wigginton the most.
Posted by: BankStreetGrounds | December 13, 2008 at 02:54 PM
"so his .296 SLG isn't even that bad,"
You're right. It's awful.
" as long as he can get his ass on base and get some steals"
Which he can't.
"I don't understand what the hell the 'Stros were thinking in non-tendering Wigginton."
I can think of about 7 million reasons.

BankStreet,
Norris Hopper earned his playing time for 2008 by having one of the highest Batting Averages in ALL of the National League during the second half of 2007. While he was leading off, the Reds ALSO had a MUCH better Winning Percentage. But Toothpick Baker was dead set on having Corey Patterson on the tam and starting in Center Field.
Both Freel and Hopper were healthy when Patterson was starting (and sucking) in the lead off spot in 2008.
As far as JHJ goes, he is a career .260 hitter and has only had three seasons, out of 11, where he has hit above .270. He is 32 years old and before 2008, only had one season where he hit better than .300. He has only had two seasons where he has had more than 400 At Bats and three seasons where he has had mroe than 300 At Bats.
Unlike the Steroid Ers, where old guys miraculously have career eyars and then continue to put up big numbers, I think JHJ is a one year wonder. So, let some OTHER team overpay for him and watch as his numbers revert back to his real self.
Because remember, Dusty Baker himself said that guys usually revert to the stats on the back of their baseball cards. He said that last year as an excuse for why Patterson was continually allowed to play and bat lead off while hitting under .200.
So, if Toothpick believes his own BS then he should agree that JHJ is nothing more than an injury prone, .260 hitting utility player who should be coming off of the bench instead of starting.

Why is it so hard to spell Taveras? It isn't Tavares. It isn't Teveras. It isn't Tavarez. Willy Taveras. His name gets spelled wrong more then anybody. Him and Vazquez. Pet peeve. Rant over.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 13, 2008 at 05:15 PM
I don't necessarily need a slugging CF, but a .296 SLG - in Colorado!! - is HORRIFIC. Being fast alone does not make you a good baseball player.
I like the Wigginton idea.
If I could play GM for a moment, here's what I'd like the Reds to do...
--Sign Wigginton and put him at 3B.
--Sign Jonny Gomes and put him in LF.
--Sign Hairston and platoon Dickerson/Hairston in CF - SO much better than Taveras.
--Trade Edwin to SF for Jonathan Sanchez.
I think Wigginton and Gomes would be nice additions, and Sanchez is about to be a breakout power lefty in the mold of Oliver Perez or Al Leiter - mark my words.
Posted by: Dan | December 13, 2008 at 05:15 PM
I also like Milton Bradley a lot, but I assume he'll command more $$$ than the Reds can afford to plunk down. He's going to be a very good signing for someone though, and I'm afraid it's going to be the Cubs.
Posted by: Dan | December 13, 2008 at 05:18 PM
Why the Heck would the reds trade Freel, let go off Hopper and then pursue a player that is essentially the same as those two. It doesn't make any sense to me.
Posted by: Tough | December 13, 2008 at 06:29 PM
They didn't let go of Hopper. They non-tender'd him but then signed him to a major league deal.
Posted by: BankStreetGrounds | December 13, 2008 at 06:46 PM
When did they sign him? I haven't seen any information on him getting signed. Please expand my knowledge
Posted by: Tough | December 13, 2008 at 07:03 PM
I really can't take anything ctownboy says seriously now. I really challenge his understanding for team construction and overall baseball knowledge.
Hopper has no power, doesn't steal bases, and can't hit for extra bases. That's why he doesn't start. Just because you have ONE good half of a year doesn't warrant that you solidified a starting spot as a lead-off man the next year. Granted, Corey Patterson sucks, but comparing Norris Hopper to Corey Patterson is like comparing crap to a polished turd.
BTW, Taveras is NOT the same as Freel or Hopper. For the following reasons:
1. He stays healthy
2. He's smarter on the base paths and doesn't get picked off every-other-time.
3. He can hit for extra bases and the occasional home run. Even though...his SLG % does suck.
4. He plays better defense. I've seen too many times Freel dive for balls he didn't need to dive for and caused extra runs to score or unnecessary extra base hits to occur.
Sign Ty Wiggington, move Edwin to left, and sign Jerry Hairston to play off the bench and occasional start.
"I think...I think...I think...Toothpicks Baker...Ca$htellini..." It's like a broken record with ctownboy.

"I guess since Baker can't have his Boy Patterson back then he is telling Ca$htellini to order Jocketty to "do whatever it takes" to sign Tavares."
I'm glad you're not a doctor. There wouldn't be a hospital in the WORLD that would put you under their insurance policy, that's for sure.

I agree Rob, ive read so many of these comments in the past year from the same guy putting down baker and the owner. i'm waiting for a positive comment from ctownboy. sounds like a cubs fan...

"--Sign Jonny Gomes and put him in LF."
Yikes, from a person whom has watched Jonny Gomes and his striking out more than 1 every 3 at bats over the last 4 years, unable to hit right handed pitchers and not a very good fielder, plus was even more pathetic with his total loss of power period in 2008.. It certainly is spelling doom to sign this guy AND pencil him into the Reds OF in 2009.
Gomes is a liability, he has no ability to control himself from chasing any pitch, goes into 2+ week periods where he can't buy a hit and when he is not starting, is not worth much as a pinch hitter because he chases everything at the plate.
Just my observations of Jonny G, have watched 100's of Rays games over the years and am glad they non tendered him personally.
Posted by: johns | December 14, 2008 at 05:11 AM
Wigginton is gonna get a higher bid then most people realize. The Reds are only one of 3 major suitors. The Indians are looking at him, as well as the Twins. Realistically, the Twins have only one spot to fill, which is right handed power bat at 3rd. And they have about 12 to 14 million under their budget. Also rumors out of MN is that the Twins are possibly willing to offer a 3 year 25 to 26 million dollar deal. I dont think the reds would give up that much considering they still have many holes to deal with. The indians could make a push, but signing kerry wood takes from their budget a bit. May the best bidder win.

First Jocketty says he is not going to move Edwin to left field because if it ain't broke don't try to fix it. Then he comes out and says he has his eye on Wigginton and maybe Encarnacion goes to left field. The Reds are even taking back the right handed slugging option before we even get it. I thought this would be the year that I broke down and bought season tickets but I cannot and will not reward this kind of behavior. I am going to put the money in a two to five year bond and hope that by the time it earns it's measly 5% interest I can afford some better seats for a team that might contend. Wasn't this ownrership group supposed to be an improvement?
Posted by: Robert | December 14, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Wigginton is a defensive upgrade...Taveras could help in Center and leadoff. We may actually contend here if we get some of that Tampa Bay luck. Ok walt is trying to make it work in tough times...Maybe I will buy a package of tickets just not season tickets.
Posted by: Robert | December 14, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I am a frustrated Reds fan... and I am wondering how long I will need to wait before my team has people in power who know that getting on base is FAR more important for a leadoff hitter than speed is? Is that really such a difficult concept?
Come on Reds... surprise me here...

"Id also like Gathright to platoon with Taverez"
News flash: Gathright signed with the Cubs already.
