« 24 Free Agents Offered Arbitration | Main | Japanese Links: Kawakami, Tazawa »
According to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon, the Reds made an offer to free agent lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes currently has multiple offers on the table, according to his agent. Since Rhodes is 39, I'm guessing the proposals are for one year.
The Cardinals made an offer to Rhodes last month, and the Tigers seem interested.

Rhodes has been very good, but he's 39. I would be fine w/ the Reds signing him, but I hope it's only for 1 year.
I hope they've learned their lesson w/ the 2-year deals (see, e.g., Mike Stanton).

saw a rumor on Yahoo that D Baker is interested in Kerry Wood....just a rumor........this would make the reds one of the more expensive bullpens though and they already have Cordero.....don't know if it makes sense to me.....

could have something to do with a trade with the tigers. i don't understand the benefit, but it has been speculated that cordero could be part of a package for ordonez. if that trade happened, the signing would make more sense. i can't say that i like the idea. reds are now a young team so they need to stay away from pricey vets that are huge injury risks. money should be spent on more certain returns. (i.e. Cordero)

Excellent idea by the Reds; let Jeremy Affeldt go and THEN sign 39 year old Rhodes to take his place as a Lefty in the Bull Pen.

In case anybody misinterprets my other psot, that was sarcasm.
Doing things like this is why the Reds have had a losing record for eight straight years.

I'm sure the Reds wouldve like to Kept Affeldt. He was the quickest FA signing, and it appears the reds didn't get a chance to come back for a counteroffer. Something tells me Affeldt did not like his year in Cincinnati that much, considering he only signed there because he was going to be given a chance to Start in Spring Training...we both know how that worked out.

Oh, I know how that worked out. My biggest problem is that the Reds supposedly didn't even get into contact with Affeldt during the exclusive time teams had to resign their own Free Agents.

Personally, I think the Reds' interest in Rhodes is not as a replacement to Affeldt. Bill Bray is a lefty already on the roster that may see increased innings given his performance last year.
Rhodes' numbers against righties were subpar last season with a .309 OBA. Versus lefties Rhodes was dominant with a .157 OBA. To me, Rhodes' numbers shout specialist of the Kent Mercker variety.
Recall that Mercker spent much of the season on the DL last year.
Also, the conjecture of Mags or Dye to the Reds only make sense if the Reds intend on fielding a contending team. Moving Cordero to acquire either of them makes little sense, as that would significantly weaken an already thin bullpen. This is especially true if Lincoln and Weathers follow Affeldt and sign elsewhere.

Rhodes? He is not even close to a affeldt. Reds should deal out a trade for a lefty.
