« Laird May Be Moving | Main | Stark's Latest: Burnett, Cantu, Lowe, Furcal »
THURSDAY, 8:10pm: Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports on comments from Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd. O'Dowd says Atkins' future with the Rockies is closely tied to the future of Todd Helton. If Helton can't produce, Atkins becomes a seemingly irreplaceable part of the Rockies offense.
WEDNESDAY, 11:27pm: MLB.com's Thomas Harding talked to Atkins' agent, who said his client is still willing to listen if the Rockies make a fresh extension offer.
11:13am: Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post gets the impression that Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins will not be traded this winter. Renck says GM Dan O'Dowd fielded inquiries from the Reds and Twins but hasn't found a match. The Rockies would want pitching in return. Atkins is under team control for two more years, so O'Dowd isn't pressing to move him.
The Indians were also linked to Atkins at one point, but MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says they've cooled on the idea.

I'm happy either way. He's a better player than he gets credit for so I'm glad they aren't just dumping him for anything they can get.
I just hope they find room for Stewart in LF and move Taveras so Spilly can play CF.

What is his trade value outside of Colorado? His away numbers are HORRIBLE.

As a Rockies fan, I'm fine with it, as long as they can shore up the rotation somehow. If Penny seems to be getting his health back, I would love for the Rockies to get him. That, along with Beimel would be a great pickup for the Rox.

No surprise there, Atkins isn't a bad player but he isn't worth the "front line pitching" the Rox were reportedly asking for

Does anyone else think this could be their lineup next season:
C- Iannetta
1B- Helton
2B- Barmes/Baker
3B- Stewart
SS- Tulowitzki
LF- Atkins
CF- Gonzalez/Spilborghs
RF- Hawpe
The Rockies really need to make room for all three of Atkins, Helton and Stewart, and they do have a hole in the outfield considering that Hawpe, Taveras, Gonzalez and Spilborghs isn't exactly a great foursome.

Well as a Twins fan I am glad then didnt get a shot at Atkins. Blake will be more stable away, which will even out the home numbers if they get him. Then they have all of their remaining resources to go after a Escobar(ATL) or Hardy for the SS position. Add one RH reliever to that mix and the Twins will be solid again.

Helton's contract really has them screwed for a few more years. They'd have a nice middle infield with Atkins at first and Stewart at 3B, but now they have to figure out another way to give Stewart playing time because Helton's still locked in. Atkins probably isn't valuable because of his awful splits, so the Rockies should keep him because he produces for them.

I meant infield, not middle infield.

Tim mentioned the Reds in on Atkins at one point, would a EE for Beltre swap make sense to anyone else but me? Cincy gets MUCH improved D, with a solid middle-of-the-order bat to put in between Bruce and Votto, while Seattle gets younger/cheaper.
Posted by: maximumpotential | December 03, 2008 at 11:30 AM
EE for Beltre? I doubt it considering what they were asking the Twins for last year, you would have to give a lot more then an ok young 3b for a proven veteran. Beltre is still semi young himself and very good still.

Scribbletone, I might be a homer, but that lineup is pretty freaking powerful. What is missing is solid leadoff and uncertainty at the 3 spot.
But regardless of who hits at the bottom of the lineup, you have to think they've easily got the most dangerous 4-8 in the NL. And then Tulo will hopefully be solid in the 2 hole.
I suppose my order would be:
1. Spilbourghs or Barmes?
2. Tulo
3. Helton?
4. Atkins
5. Hawpe
6. Stewart
7. Ianetta
8. Barmes or Spilbourghs
Either Barmes or Spilly in the 8 hole makes me laugh, but where do you put them?
Posted by: ProgMatinee | December 03, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Prog,
That may be a nice 6-7-8, but it's not a very good 3-4-5.
Posted by: jrfukudome | December 03, 2008 at 12:28 PM
I don't disagree at all. I actually think the Rockies are in a very good position long term, with that lineup and some really interesting guys still coming up like Fowler, Nelson, Gomez, etc.
Combine that with their pitching, which actually looks decent long term with Jimenez, Francis, Cook, Morales, Chacin, Reynolds, Weathers, Corpas, Street, and Friedrich.

"That may be a nice 6-7-8, but it's not a very good 3-4-5."
This is true as well. The main positive aspect of that lineup is the great depth that they would have. In terms of having guys that could carry the offense for extended periods of time the way Holliday could, well they don't have that anymore. A 3-4-5 of Helton, Atkins and Hawpe/Iannetta/Stewart is pretty subpar, and would be an issue considering that they don't even have great top of the lineup hitters.
The Rockies have some good hitters, but they lack any truly GREAT hitters.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 03, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Hawpe and Atkins are very good IMO. Maybe the 15 home games I go to every year overshadow their road performances for me. Helton's lack of power makes me want to put him closer to the 7 hole, but he still gets on base enough that I need to put him nearer to the top of the order.
Posted by: ProgMatinee | December 03, 2008 at 12:55 PM
All in all, the Rockies have a potent lineup, but its really unconventional in that they lack the true 1 and 3 hitters. I agree, no one is truly great, but they don't have any "easy outs" either.

Seriously, what would the Reds need to give up to get all three of...Taverez, Torreabla, and Atkins?
Bailey, Stubbs, Thompson, Malony, Freel, Dorn, Roenicke?

WE WILL NOT GET YUNEL ESCOBAR!
WE DON'T HAVE JAKE PEAVY.

''A 3-4-5 of Helton, Atkins and Hawpe/Iannetta/Stewart is pretty subpar, and would be an issue considering that they don't even have great top of the lineup hitters.''
It isn't the greatest 3-4-5 from a name standpoint, but Helton, Hawpe, and Atkins put up some huge numbers (at Coors, I know). If Helton and Tulowitzki are healthy next year and Stewart could develop further, I really think the Rockies could win the West without Holliday. I love the 1-2-3 of Francis, Cook, and Jimenez. They won't win any popularity contests but I think if they are all healthy and performing at the same time, look out for them.
And as for Tim's point, I think that Colorado is looking to see if Helton will stay healthy, not as much as him producing because we know he definitely can. If Helton gets injured again, Atkins could easily play first with Stewart at third. If not, then they would have to bench an outfielder to make room for Atkins or Stewart in left. Makes sense.

Helton + Spilborghs + cash to the Yankees for Nady + Kennedy.
Rockies save enough money to sign Atkins and put him at 1B for good, and pick up Kennedy for the back of the rotation. Nady goes to RF, Hawpe to LF, and Taveras/Fowler in CF.
Yankees move Swisher to RF, pick up the bulk of the cash still owed Helton (and it is a LOT of cash), and get the CF they need in Spilborghs.

Helton-Atkins-Hawpe isn't bad, and Stewart has upside and hopefully will evolve into one of his own.
Cook-Jimenez-Francis-De La Rosa/Smith/Morales/Reynolds.
Helton's a 1B, not a 3B. He has zero relevance to who plays 3B. It will be Stewart, unless he falls off the cliff.

'Helton's a 1B, not a 3B. He has zero relevance to who plays 3B. It will be Stewart, unless he falls off the cliff. ''
Todd Helton, All-Star first baseman, backed up Peyton Manning at QB as a two-sport player at Tennessee, loves to hunt, .320 10 out of 12 years, got it. I know Helton very well, thanks.
But he does have INDIRECT relevance as to who plays third, because if he isn't healthy then they could put both Atkins and Stewart in the infield at first and third and they could use a left field spot for Spilborghs, Gonzalez, etc. If Helton is healthy, then Atkins and Stewart are interchanged at third and left and one of those other outfielders goes on the bench.
Sorry for not making my point clearer.
