| Phillies Sign Gary Majewski »
By Tim Dierkes [December 23, 2008 at 1:54pm CST]
Ken Rosenthal filed a new column earlier today.
- The Angels are lukewarm on Manny Ramirez, and for now are talking about filling their lineup with internal candidates.
- Kevin Towers says that if the Jake Peavy sweepstakes heats back up, "nobody is going to know it." Rosenthal discusses the chances of the Angels or Cubs.
- Mark Teixeira is "almost certain" to get an escape clause in his deal.
- The Cubs are confident about signing Milton Bradley, but the Rays, Yankees, and Nationals are interested too.
- Rosenthal looks at possibilities for Pat Burrell, discussing the Rays, Mariners, Rangers, and Reds.
- The Brewers expressed interest in Adam Dunn as they were mulling a Mike Cameron trade (Corey Hart would've played center).
- Bobby Abreu "remains in touch with the Yankees." Surprisingly to hear, as the two sides reportedly had not spoken for quite a while.
- The Rangers would like to move some salary, with Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, and Hank Blalock the candidates.
- The Royals like Jerry Hairston Jr., but don't have the money to sign him.
I dont know why the Nationals are expressiing interest in Bradley. they have nowhere to place him unless they trade one ro 2 of their outfielders.

Opt-out clauses!!! This could get funny.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 23, 2008 at 02:01 PM
Why are the Nationals now a player for every FA out there? When did they become a desirable landing spot?
Posted by: NuDynasty | December 23, 2008 at 02:02 PM
*gasp*. The Angels might not even add one bat? The AL West is even wider open than once thought.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 23, 2008 at 02:04 PM
The Sox won't give Teixeira an opt-out clause. So if that's the case it's between the Yankees and Nats.
A lot of people around here (New England) believe he's been playing possum and is just squeezing the Sox for more money and wants to be here.
I think he doesn't want to be here, and it's like the CC situation where he has 171 million reasons to come here with the extra 1 being for the chance to win.
...A chance to win he also has in New York, with an opt-out clause. They have a hole at 1B, after all... Swisher or no Swisher.

Didn't Rosenthal just claim the Mets were the most likely destination for PtB?

"The Angels are lukewarm on Manny Ramirez"
Why would the Angels want to sign Manny Ramirez?
That could potentially screw up their nearly perfect record of losing every single playoff game to the Red Sox!
Posted by: Off_the_Wall | December 23, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Sox are against opt-out clauses. I agree with "BOH"... things are not looking as good for the Sox now.
Posted by: JJGBPD | December 23, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Rays, please win one of those battles for a impact hitter at DH. I probably shouldn't with all the injury concerns but I want Bradley!
Posted by: RaysFan | December 23, 2008 at 02:10 PM
The Royals must be completely tapped out if they can't even afford JHJ. How much could he really cost?
Posted by: pageian | December 23, 2008 at 02:28 PM
Burrell would be a better fit for Milwaukee..
Off the Wall, you shouldn't go after the angels like that. If they can get a bat to protect Vlad, they are a legit threat once again..
They need to get AGon and Peavy.
and they have the pieces..
Weaver, Adenhart, Morales/Trumbo, Sean Rodriguez, Willits, and Anthony Ortega should get it done..
Weaver Adenhart and Rodriguez should net Peavy easily
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | December 23, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Well, it isn't just Manny. If the story is to be believed, the Angels aren't interested in Dunn, Burrell, or Abreu, either.
AGon and Peavy would be great for the Angels, but I don't think SD would trade AGon.
Posted by: Off_the_Wall | December 23, 2008 at 02:39 PM
I've said it a million times. The Cubs should sign Adam Dunn. I know he'd be tough in RF, but he could play 1B after D-Lee leaves. He's also a better clubhouse guy, gives 110%, is more durable, and has a ton more power. The Cubs right now are a much worse team than they were last year.
Posted by: TheGrinch | December 23, 2008 at 02:49 PM
but I don't think SD would trade AGon.
Agreed, but they are so far away now.. Every team within the NL west is getting better or putting together good drafts for the future.
They need to strip the clubs completely and stock piles young talent
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | December 23, 2008 at 02:55 PM
wow... if Tex is truly a Yankee now, I wouldn't be surprised if Hendry goes after Johnny Damon.
Posted by: HarborView | December 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
will the cubs have adam dunn and jake peavy on opening day???
Posted by: tim rogers | December 23, 2008 at 03:49 PM
"The Royals like Jerry Hairston Jr., but don't have the money to sign him."
Will it financially kill the Royals to offer him like $5MM or whatever he's asking for?
LOL

I highly doubt that Padres would move AGon, it makes little sense unless they get competely blown away with an offer. I think you have a good strong that it would cost a lot, but i doubt that they would want Morales/Trumbo as part of it, since that would block their best prospect in Blanks, and neither has truly proved themselves in the majors either. Plus I have my doubts they would want Weaver, thou he makes sense, but they said earlier they wanted players with 5+ years of team control in return, if they hold true to that they wont want Weaver or Willits.
But the Angels have the prospects for a trade, I just dont think they would pay the price that it would cost to get both. Peavy trade I can see, but AGon I doubt highly.
Posted by: Thumper | December 23, 2008 at 04:00 PM
so where do u think peavy will go??
Posted by: Cubbies22 | December 23, 2008 at 04:06 PM
I honestly believe the Padres will keep him, unless they get what they want or at least close to it. The fact that they didnt make a deal quickly and didnt back down tells me that they were not forced to trade him, they wanted to move him for the sake of flexibility.
That said, Peavy will control where he gets dealt if it comes to that, so Cubs and Braves hold an advantage over the Angels.

sadly...yes.

ADAM DUNN!!!!!!!!!
Could you imagine what he'd do
at Wrigley?
I can't believe the Cubs have'nt considered him.
He may strike out a lot and not be great on the field, but he has the power to make the cubs formidable.
He'd balence off the offense and make them dangerous.
Posted by: Kenb67 | December 23, 2008 at 04:28 PM
Kenb67 thats y im asking bc i no if they get Adam Dunn and Jake Peavy the Cubs would be insanely dangerous

661dodgerblue: how is Burrell a better fit for the Brewers than Dunn? Dunn is actually a MUCH better fit than Burrell because:
1) the Brewers sorely need more left-handed bats in the lineup (they currently only have one, two if Mike Lamb is in a platoon situation)
2) Dunn can play 1st base. If they trade Fielder Dunn could be there.
3) The Brewers have Lorenzo Cain penciled in to take over in center in 2010 so they would go back to having three OF and Burrell would be odd man out.
Dunn would soften the blow of losing Fielder and fill a one year gap in the outfield if Cameron was/is traded. Not that it is going to or should happen.
Posted by: MilwMatt | December 23, 2008 at 05:06 PM
If the Rays aren't careful, the DH they are waiting "to fall in their lap" might be out fo reach sooner than they think.
1) Dunn - Nationals
2) Bradley - Cubs
3) Giambi - A's
That leaves Burrell and Abreu. I don't see Abreu fitting in with the Rays because they desperately need a RH power bat in their lineup.
As far as Burrell goes, I could see the Mets making a late play for him. They're going to need a masher in the middle of their lineup and Burrell has put up some good numbers against them.
It's one thing for the Rays to want to be frugal, but how would they explain themselves if they missed out on one of these guys because they simply waited too long?

Watch the Yankees next move: trading Matsui for prospects and signing Manny.
Matsui, bad knees or not...has only one year left on his deal, likes to DH and is good for .290 22 100 every year. Many teams would dig that production for ONE year rather than shell out a mult-year to Dunn, Burrell, etc.
If that goes down: Damon, Jeter, ARod, Manny, Tex, Nady, Cano, Jorge and Swisher. 1000 runs to go with a top 5 rotation and a great young pen = #27!!
Posted by: jjyankeesfan2 | December 23, 2008 at 06:02 PM
By the way...if the Rays can land a big bat for DH to go along with an extremely nice young pitching staff...the Rag Sux will be looking at 3rd place next year.
I'm a die hard Yankees fan...but I have to say I love watching the young Rays. I think they will be around for a while.

Sorry. I think it's more a case that JHJ doesn't make sense for the Royals rather than they can't afford him. They have already signed a backup infielder. This rumor seems silly. What they can't afford is Adam Dunn or someone like that. Minor role players are still affordable.
Posted by: Stook | December 23, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Giambi should not be an Athletic next year. Makes. Zero. Sense. Whatsoever.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 23, 2008 at 07:26 PM
Jerry Jr isnt even worth 2 mil
Posted by: Canterbury | December 24, 2008 at 01:56 AM
The Cubs should try to convince D-Lee to waive his no trade clause in order to send him to Boston. Pick up one of their young pitching prospects in return, then sign Dunn (1B) and Bradley (RF).
Posted by: rockstrongo | December 24, 2008 at 10:12 AM
cubs should not sign bradley.i dont want to watch him miss 60 games this year.he will want to much money, and dunn is actually the best available lefty for us hands down.unless the yanks trade us matsui, which would be the best solution.granted they pay half his salary.it sure seems they could afford it.he would be able to work with fukodome, and we would be able to see this year if he can actually make the adjustments to hit mlb pitching,or we will be in trouble in 2010.so dunn or matsui are the best targets, not gimpy bradley.
Posted by: cubbie75 | December 26, 2008 at 03:32 PM
and we will never trade d.lee, maybe move him down in the lineup.but how could we get rid of lee?he is one of the only cubs that has actually hit in the last 2 postseasons.shame on cub fans that actually want him gone.
Posted by: cubbie75 | December 26, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Granted Lee hit in the 08 playoffs....of course no one was on base for a potential double....but I don't even remember him fouling off a pitch against the D'backs in 07. Lee should have been dealt for prospect so they could have pursued Tex, Dunn as a back up plan.
Posted by: poorolecub | December 26, 2008 at 04:52 PM
Good the Royals dont need to waste their money on Hariston.
Posted by: Jarred | December 27, 2008 at 02:37 PM
d.lee had a good bat avg. in 07 playoffs.look it up.
