« Giants Rumors: Burrell, Turnbow, Sanchez | Main | Tigers Sign Adam Everett, Twins Like Wilson »
9:24pm: The Rangers met with Sheets and his agent, according to T.R. Sullivan. Jon Daniels said not to read too much into it.
7:13pm: Per Sherman, the Yanks met with Sheets today.
6:30pm: Free agent hurler Ben Sheets arrived in Vegas this afternoon, according to Ken Rosenthal. Sheets wouldn't comment much on the Yankees, but said he wouldn't burn the bridge leading to a possible Milwaukee return.
MLB.com reports that the Rangers would like to chat with Sheets this week (he currently lives in Dallas). They'd have to free up some cash to sign him. Jon Daniels was already planning on meeting with Sheets' agent Casey Close in regards to Jason Jennings.

It is a shame a pitcher with Sheets talent is always injured. IF he could top 200 IP in a two year contract, he could probably get a monster deal on the market. I would love to see the Yankees sign him over Burnett.

Haven't seen anything recently, maybe Tim has, but at one point there was talk that Sheets may be willing to accept a two year deal, I think the rumor was perhaps with the Astros.
Is that the type of contract that could still net Sheets or is to early to tell.
Sheets seems to have fallen into the second tier pitchers like Oliver Perez because of his injuries. But he is just as good as the top three if he is healthy. I know that is a pretty big "if", but he is not Rich Harden.

Think the Astros passed on anyone who will command over 10 Mill a year since they chose not to sign Wolf or try to sign Wolf i should say. Sheets will be a brewer and a 3rd go to if Yankees dont get CC or Burnett. I would Love for the Stros to backload a two year contract at say 24 Mill cause I think he will pay divedends but to bad we did that with Roy O, Berkman and Lee, so the salary this year is higher than normal.......

I wonder how much money the rangers would give sheets, and for how long?
My guess is 4 years, but can't put a dollar amount though, i think it depends on what burnett and lowe get.
Also, i think this only gets done if padilla or millwood get traded.

Chris -
I don't think the Stros will sign Sheets, despite the reports. They really want to keep that payroll at around 100...while Sheets wouldn't want a long term deal, he probably will get a good amount of money. Hard to fit that in when Tejada and Wiggington are getting so much money.

The Rangers really HAVE to do something like that, if they stay status quo attendance is going to be abysmal.

While Houston has said they want to keep the payroll down, expanding it for Randy Wolf is not the same as expanding it for Ben Sheets. Drayton McClane has never hesitated to expand the budget if a good opportunity is available. If Sheets price is low enough, or he wants a short term deal to try to prove he's healthy and capitalize later, I could see Drayton ponying up.

Best case scenario for Rangers: they can unload Blalock and Millwood to someone for a player who can either play 3rd, or of course a starter or closer. What about Millwood and Blalock to SF for Sanchez?
Then they pull off a miracle and sign Sheets with the saved money.
Both those things are extremely unlikely though, eh? Still, it'd be great. I'm so sick of Millwood's tired act...

I'd love to see the Yankees invest a few years for 8-10 million per on Sheets. Add some incentives to it and see what you get out of him.
They just threw away 40 million on Pavano, so why not roll the dice on Sheets?
I think this becomes a no brainer if CC doesn't sign, and should be high on the priority list regardless.
