Not sure why they are still talking to Treanor after the Laird acquisition. Rookie Dusty Ryan is just as good as Treanor.
Posted by: Rob M. | December 16, 2008 at 04:55 PM
I wish they would spend there money on some relief pitchers, or maybe Joe Crede.
Posted by: Brian White | December 16, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Dontrelle Willis loves him. He got brought up to the Marlins from (then) AAA Albuquerque and caught Willis' best games there. That's how Treanor stayed in the bigs, so last year was somewhat surprising, but the Marlins had nobody else.
Reputed to be a good clubhouse guy (and has the aforementioned hot athlete wife).

id perfer putting that money towards Beimel and Cruz. sorry, but we already have 2 catchers.

They really need relief pitching. This doesn't make any sense.

"Not sure why they are still talking to Treanor after the Laird acquisition. Rookie Dusty Ryan is just as good as Treanor."
I beg to differ. Dusty "passed ball" Ryan looked awful this past year.

DD should be focused on relief pitching. This doesnt make any sense to me, personally. Why aren't we hearing rumors about them trying to shore up their bullpen. Instead, we hear them trying to sign a backup catcher. Dusty Ryan can be a serviceable backup to Laird. Doesn't make any sense.
Posted by: cfitz88 | December 16, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Traditionally, back-up Catchers are defensive specialist. If that describes Ryan to you, you haven't been paying attention.
Posted by: MickS | December 16, 2008 at 06:16 PM
what do you mean he looked awful? evidently you didnt watch the same games i did, because after the first few games Dusty Ryan swung a hot stick and played great defense...called some great games and got a few good outings out of robertson and willis.
Posted by: Quantumleaper(GoTigers) | December 16, 2008 at 06:50 PM
The Tigers have two back-up catchers. Laird is the better defensively. Ryan is better offensively.
Quantunleaper, your definition of awesome defense must be radically different than mine.
Posted by: MickS | December 16, 2008 at 06:59 PM
I wouldn't mind them signing Treanor, but the lack of attention theyre giving the bullpen is really getting old. Having 3 backup catchers doesn't do us any good.

Maybe I am ignorant as to the state of catchers in the MLB at this point, but what about Treanor's line warrants his receiving serious consideration from any team? His batting line is attrocious and his ability to throw out potential basestealers is far from superior...

nckdmaa, you definitely are not ignorant to the current state of mlb catchers, i think youre just ignorant of the current state of the Tigers organization haha

Such is the confidence that the Tiger's front office has in Dusty Ryan. I rest my case.

Don't see how that gave up 2 decent prospects for laird to put him on the bench for a backup, no, he'll be the starter next year since he is one of the best throwing and defensive catchers in the league, which the Tigers pitchers are going to need an awful lot of..Somebody to stop all those baserunners from getting to 2nd easily..
From watching lots of Boston games this past season, laird was 1 catcher that Ellsbury put the brakes on after he threw him out stealing a couple times, so the guy puts 2nd thoughts into the minds of good base stealers.

I will be the first one to admit I don't know if Dusty Ryan can cut it or not but I think most teams have realized you need to have 2 catchers with one waiting in the minors. I'm guessing Ryan still has options if thats the case than signing Treanor is a solid move. Especially since Skelton was taken in the Rule 5 draft further depleting their depth.
Posted by: Steveo26 | December 16, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Also, so what if they are in on Treanor today compared to a RP. Its not like a Jake Peavy situation where it encompasses entire weeks. Its one day they are focusing on catcher depth. Tomorrow they can sign a relief pitcher or 2. Most of them are still out there i'm sure they can get one solid arm.
Posted by: Steveo26 | December 16, 2008 at 11:59 PM
The Tigers have three catchers. Inge, Laird, and Ryan. I can't imagine them getting a fourth catcher while ignoring the bullpen, this is just baffling. If they wanted to platoon catching then take back Pudge, he's better than all of them.
Posted by: Will Smiff | December 17, 2008 at 01:54 AM
inge doesn't count since he is the starting 3rd baseman.
steve026, its not that theyre spending a day on treanor, its the fact that its not the best way to spend the money, especially with guys like joe nelson who would be happy with a 800k deal out there. Right now there are several good bullpen arms that the tigers are seemingly ignoring. But no worries. we got matt treanor.
Posted by: dtigerman | December 17, 2008 at 02:05 AM
I think the signing of Treanor is going to be for 2 reasons. First, they may think if they sign him he can help with Willis and maybe have him catch all of Willis' games, and they need a back up catcher for the season, since Dusty still needs more seasoning. That was obvious with September, and and he has done even worse in winter ball. Last I checked he was batting .163, so he's not ready yet IMO. Secondly, if they do think he can help with Willis, and that Willis is the one going to have a bounce back year, they may look to move Nate somewhere and free up some money to go after Fuentes or Hoffman and a couple other bullpen arms.
And I only think that about Treanor being the catcher for Willis based on the fact that he caught a few of Willis' games, including 11 out of his last 14 with Florida. And according to Willis' agent, he is in better shape right now then he was last season, and is working out more than ever. So thats just my guess about why they are signing Treanor. They will get the bullpen help, and this move may lead to that.

The Tigers needed this, Dusty Ryan is not ready for MLB and this gives him the chance to go back down and play every day, instead of wasting away on the bench only playing once every 7 days.
Treanor made $705K last season, I can't imagine that he is going to get THAT much more that the Tigers won't be able to afford their relievers. The Tigers will still have $800K to try to sign Joe Nelson.
By all accounts, the Tigers are heavily going after Beimel and may be taking a wait and see approach to the rest of their reliever signings until they know what Beimel is doing.

i hope they have the money, and now they will focus on the bullpen, but im VERY skeptical of the tigers payroll situation. DD has said it will be where it was last year, but with how Detroit's economy/the big 3 are doing I just don't see them raising the payroll much more from where it is now. Especially considering some of the guys who we need to sign long-term still.
Posted by: dtigerman | December 17, 2008 at 02:02 PM
The Tigers have quietly fared well this offseason, with the exception of that brutal Joyce/Jackson trade.
Good depth move by the Tigers.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 17, 2008 at 02:17 PM
McPhail has nothing to do with the signing. However, McPhail was interested in signing Treanor himself.
If you read the report from Dan Connolly, you would know that McPhail was commenting on Treanor no longer being available.

For what it's worth, he's a really good guy, got to know meet him quite a few times (unfortunately for him) at the Marlins spring training complex while he was rehabbing.
Still, I can't see the fit. Seems like another Vance Wilson signing.

you think nobody cares about the tigers? take a look in your stands on a nightly basis, you guys can barely fill the damn stands while the tigers are constantly selling out. theres more tigers fans than white sox fans, thats for sure.

well put quantumleaper

Well, maybe the guy makes 1/4th what his wife, who is entirely too hot for him, makes. :-P

I like to see the Tigers finally caring about defense. They made move after move while ignoring how it affected their defense (Sheffield, Cabrera, Renteria) and ended up having some big issues.
Now, it seems as though they've completely reversed directions.
They're playing a defense first catching tandem in Gerald Laird and Matt Treanor. They're moving Inge back to third, where his glove is great but his bat is seriously lacking. They've stuck Cabrera and Guillen in 1B and LF, so they won't be depended on defensively so much anymore. And, they likely won't play Sheffield much in the field.
Now, only if Edwin Jackson can put it together so they don't look dumb for that trade..

hey dtigerman, are you a member of the Tigers mlb forums?
Posted by: Quantumleaper(GoTigers) | December 18, 2008 at 11:40 AM
quantumleaper, no ive checked em out before, especially with them making all these signings since the winter meetings, but im not a member of any. Do you mean the official site or the detroittigerswebblog?

What's the point of this deal?
Posted by: twoseamer | December 18, 2008 at 04:35 PM
twoseamer, Dombrowski wants to give our current backup catcher, Dusty Ryan, more time in the minors to develop(I heard he played terrible in the winter league). But I really dont get it either, with our bullpen needing attention, but whatever, not as bad as the joyce deal at least.
