« Sabean Rant | Main | Derek Lowe Rumors: Wednesday »
11:06pm: Jon Paul Morosi says the swap has been finalized. The Tigers get Jackson for his three arb years, while the Rays get six years of Joyce. Joyce is a strong defensive right fielder who posted a fine rookie half-season.
9:55pm: Marc Topkin says the final details are being worked out in this trade. Bill Chastain's Rays source says they don't have a completed trade. The Rays would add an outfielder and save a few million with the deal.
8:43pm: According to Ed Price, the Tigers are set to acquire Edwin Jackson from the Rays for outfielder Matt Joyce.

Would be a good deal for the tigers. Jackson is a stud.
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 10, 2008 at 08:44 PM
Dang. Looks like the Bucs won't be getting him.
Posted by: piratefan14 | December 10, 2008 at 08:45 PM
I really like Jackson, he would be a great upgrade to the Tigers staff.
He's got great stuff.
Posted by: RWS | December 10, 2008 at 08:46 PM
Tigers really need pitching. Is Joyce going to replace Baldelli?
Posted by: Will Smiff | December 10, 2008 at 08:46 PM
Hopefully, something else is coming the Rays way. I know that Joyce has potential, but is that the best deal the Rays can get from E Jax?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 10, 2008 at 08:46 PM
I think the rays could get more. Heck if I was Doug Melvin I would give up Lorenzo Cain straight up for Jackson if that is all it will take.
Posted by: thomas10 | December 10, 2008 at 08:46 PM
no, no, no, NO!!!!
BOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Nothing against Jackson, I know the guy can pitch, but I would have really liked to see the Tigers hold onto Joyce and see what he could build onto last years numbers.
Posted by: Big E | December 10, 2008 at 08:46 PM
good stuff, command is an issue at times.
Posted by: jaydestro | December 10, 2008 at 08:47 PM
good trade for Tigers.
TBay should of got more... we'll see if this is official tho.
Posted by: jaysfan99 | December 10, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Good deal for both clubs- Detroit gets a middle of the rotation starter and Tampa gets a RF ...
Not bad.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 08:47 PM
The Rays just made out like bandits.
Jackson is a #4-5 starter, with VERY flukish success this year. Only two starting pitchers in ALL MLB were able to maintain a K/BB under 1.5, and an ERA under 4.50: Jackson and Greg Smith. Jackson has oodles of talent, but he hasn't turned it into much of anything.
And remember, Joyce is controlled for the next 6 years, while Jackson is arb eligible, and only controlled for the next 3.
Joyce for Jackson is a steal for the Rays. Absolute steal.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM
STEAL for the Tigers.
Posted by: TNS | December 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM
As a fan of neither team I like the fit for both teams. Joyce has good power and is a nice upgrade IMO over Gross/Zobrist
Posted by: wayne gomes | December 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM
Man, Jackson for... Joyce??
I mean, I thought Jackson would worth more than that
Posted by: The Goggles Do Nothing | December 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM
Good for both teams if you ask me.
Posted by: BucSox | December 10, 2008 at 08:49 PM
Jackson looks pretty smoke and mirrors to me. With that high a whip and low strike out numbers he ERA should have been higher then it was. Joyce is a solid young OF. Don't think they would have gotten much more with the current market. Add to the fact that the Rays probably have three or four arms that are better then Jackson in the minors to replace him and its a easy deal to make.
Posted by: schellis | December 10, 2008 at 08:50 PM
The Rays just got FLEECED!
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Its a good deal for the Tigers, and it fills the major need for the Rays, without adding payroll. I like it from both sides.
I think they could have gotten more for Jackson, but remember they basically had to deal one of their starters, they didnt have room, nor did they want to pay the money he had coming through arb.
Posted by: Thumper | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
YES!
I hated Edwin. He sucks the first 1 or 2 innings deeming him a frustrating starter and a useless MR. He would be HORRID in our bullpen.
Joyce cost nothing, I wonder who we will sign now!
I am a happy man.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Looks like the Tigers are going to overpay yet again for another overrated Florida pitcher. Maybe they'll be smart this time and not instantly give him an undeserved extension.
Edwin Jackson is not a good pitcher.
Posted by: AndrewYF | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Jackson Verlander Bonderman isn't a bad 1 2 3.. not in that order
Posted by: Tough | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
"glad to see tampa sell out on the young arms that made them so successful in the first place"
Except for the fact that their rotation is still filled out, and Jackson was their worst starter last year AND arbitration eligible.
Unless you REALLY think Matt Joyce is a bust, this is a stupid deal for the Tigers.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Also, for those who think they could have gotten something better for Jackson....they probably could have gotten a bigger name, short term commitment at a bigger salary like Wigginton. But they probably weren't interested in somebody making that coin
But they probably couldn't have gotten something better in terms of cheap, controllable OF help
Posted by: wayne gomes | December 10, 2008 at 08:52 PM
edwin has the stuff but no control. would have like them to at least get platoon guy who could hit lefties as it was one of their biggest holes. holding out hope they find a way to sign milton bradley.
Posted by: brendan | December 10, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Rays might have gotten better end of the deal, but Tigers NEED quality young starters because our farm system is in the sh*tter. I like this trade for us, as much as I hate to see Joyce go
Posted by: cfitz88 | December 10, 2008 at 08:53 PM
For all of you saying it's a steal for the respective teams-
remember there could always be another piece involved.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 08:55 PM
"I hated Edwin. He sucks the first 1 or 2 innings deeming him a frustrating starter and a useless MR. He would be HORRID in our bullpen."
I wouldn't say he would be horrid in the bullpen.
I think it would be worth trying, especially if the Rays moved Wheeler.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 08:56 PM
"For all of you saying it's a steal for the respective teams-
remember there could always be another piece involved."
Oh yeah. Absolutely. We have to wait and see. But the way the deal is constructed now, its called a steal.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 08:57 PM
This is awesome on many levels
-Edwin sucks
-Price starting in AAA rumors will be quited
-Joyce is very cheap fix for RF who I think is good.
-Even more money for a DH to be signed now.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 10, 2008 at 08:57 PM
They couldve gotten J Dye!!
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 10, 2008 at 08:58 PM
"They couldve gotten J Dye!!"
6 years of Joyce, 3 at league minimum > 1 year of Dye at 11.5MM, or 2 years of Dye at 22MM.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 08:59 PM
This years E Volquez and J Hamilton?
Posted by: pskip13 | December 10, 2008 at 09:00 PM
Thank god they didn't go the Jermaine Dye route. Cost way too much and he can break down at any time. Plus he would be a 1 year fix.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 10, 2008 at 09:02 PM
I would say it's a steal for both teams
The Rays give Price an opportunity to start at the Major League level as well as receive a cheap solution for the longterm in RF
The Tigers get a durable middle of the rotation starter who has good stuff and only have to give up one of their many OF's.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 09:03 PM
"-Price starting in AAA rumors will be quited"
Except those rumors are GOOD if they still want to trade Sonnanstine or Niemann for a DH..
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 09:03 PM
So awesome we got a RF. I didn't really want Nando and Gross to platoon all season.
Now we can have Aybar at DH or sign Bradley/Giambi/Abreu/Ibanez
Posted by: RaysFan | December 10, 2008 at 09:06 PM
im not a fan of either team but ithink this is a pretty even trade. the rays get a RF which is probally there biggest needs and the tigers get a solid consistent pitcher in the middle of there staff
Posted by: shaneg | December 10, 2008 at 09:07 PM
"Now we can have Aybar at DH or sign Bradley/Giambi/Abreu/Ibanez"
Aybar at DH and Joyce at RF is a horrible idea in terms of offensive production. IT just won't cut it in the AL East. The Rays have about 15MM to spend. Unless they're planning to spend most of it on Fuentes and the bullpen, they should go out and sign a DH. Especially in this market.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 09:08 PM
If this deal gets done in time the tigers could offer Larish, Minor, and a minor league prospect for Putz.
Posted by: highVoltage | December 10, 2008 at 09:09 PM

Posted by: shaneg | December 10, 2008 at 09:10 PM
except jackson is neither solid nor consistent
Posted by: Casanova Wong | December 10, 2008 at 09:15 PM
Well....we competed and won the AL East with a worse offense last season. Plus, I don't think we have 15 mil to spend but if we do then I would love Aybar at DH and a stud reliever sighed.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 10, 2008 at 09:18 PM
The Tigers will not trade Larish away, now that Joyce is gone.
Posted by: Big E | December 10, 2008 at 09:19 PM
"Well....we competed and won the AL East with a worse offense last season. Plus, I don't think we have 15 mil to spend but if we do then I would love Aybar at DH and a stud reliever sighed."
Or Fuentes and Juan Rivera, who is an improvement over Aybar.
How much do the Rays have to spend, if not 15MM. Jackson would free up more payroll (about 1-2MM). Not a Rays fan here, so don't know.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 09:20 PM
K-Rod signing for a lot less than expected and Wood expected to sign for less than we thought also, should give us at least a shot at Fuentes. 2/24 3/36 make any sense?
Posted by: RaysFan | December 10, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Man I can remember the summer of '05 getting back from Iraq and visiting family in Vegas and checking out a game at Cashman Field---Edwin got absolutely RAKED by the Sacto Riverdogs (Dioner Navarro eventually caught that game as a defensive replacement in something like a 22-9 loss) and I was convinced he was pretty much done, and soon he left in one of those multiple Dodger/Rays trades that took place those couple years. But between then and now he's added a 3rd pitch (changeup? haven't been paying that close of attention) and he's been coming back. He's still young, and expectations may have been too high after dominating Randy Johnson in his debut in '03; but if this goes through and you're a Tiger fan, you'll probably be happy with this deal.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 10, 2008 at 09:32 PM
RaysFan-
I'd say 3yr/30-33MM gets it done, since K-Rod was 3/37. Nothing way out of the Rays price range, although having the closer be the highest paid guy looks awfully sketch (only other team that is structured like that is Twins and Nathan, and Fuentes is not as good as Nathan).
If the Rays have 15-17MM to spend (adding in money saved by replacing Jackson with Joyce), Fuentes looks good.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 09:32 PM
the rays will fill the pen with their starting surplus.
they should sign giambi for a year..
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | December 10, 2008 at 09:35 PM
as a tigers fan, i'm pretty happy with the offseason so far. now if only we can find a way to unload sheffield to the rangers...
Posted by: mckeetho | December 10, 2008 at 09:44 PM
Good deal for both teams. Tigers have plenty of offense and managed to pick up a young SP with upside who's inexpensive. Rays pick up a potential 20 hr guy to answer their RF needs.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 10, 2008 at 09:53 PM
This seems like a decent enough trade for both teams, but it seems to me that the Tigers continue to fail to address their biggest problem of a closer/any reliable bullpen arm.
Posted by: dtigerman | December 10, 2008 at 10:01 PM
No this does not address the Tigers need for a closer
This is a good trade for both teams
Each player has a decent ceiling they could reach
However, the Tigers still need to solidify the bullpen
Sign Fuentes or Lyon somehow
Hesitant to sign Cruz, and Cordero would be interesting
Posted by: pskip13 | December 10, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Oh
and take a look at Beimel
Granted the Tigers won't sign them all
At least two more reliable relievers
Posted by: pskip13 | December 10, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Chastain is making me worried.
Watch this trade be debunked/called BS.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Lyon?
The one thing he can add to the Tigers is having Jim Leyland take up smoking again.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 10, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Jackson will regress to a high 4s ERA this year. Don't like this for Detroit.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM
good deal for both teams. a 5th outfielder in exchange for a 4th starting pitcher. this makes both teams a little better.
now get some darn bullpen arms Dombrowski!
Posted by: Quantumleaper(GoTigers) | December 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM
it says the Rays added an outfielder to the deal save a few million. I checked the payroll for the Rays and the only OF making over 1 mil is Carl Crawford..could he be the guy??
Posted by: GoBlue4Life | December 10, 2008 at 10:11 PM
"it says the Rays added an outfielder to the deal save a few million. I checked the payroll for the Rays and the only OF making over 1 mil is Carl Crawford..could he be the guy??"
Uhh, no. Not happening. Crawford will cost more.
I think it meant the Rays added an OF in Joyce and saved a few million (Jackson's arbitration salary).
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Smoltz on a one year deal would be interesting for the Tigers.
Hoffman also would be a nice stop gap to see if Zumaya can regain the form that made him the closer in waiting back in 06.
Posted by: RWS | December 10, 2008 at 10:13 PM
"good deal for both teams. a 5th outfielder in exchange for a 4th starting pitcher. this makes both teams a little better.

i take it you are not a fan of joyce

Fifth outfielder???
LMAO.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 10, 2008 at 10:16 PM
"it says the Rays added an outfielder to the deal save a few million. I checked the payroll for the Rays and the only OF making over 1 mil is Carl Crawford..could he be the guy??"
Was that a serious question?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 10, 2008 at 10:19 PM
actually, Matt Joyce is/was my second favorite Tiger (Granderson being the first) He'll be my favorite Ray now.
and yes Joyce is a fifth outfielder...at least he would be on the tigers with Thames being the fourth.
i like Joyce, but we desperately need pitching...and we will when the deal is final. i guess Robertson or Bonderman is headed to the Pen?
Posted by: Quantumleaper(GoTigers) | December 10, 2008 at 10:22 PM
my bad guys i didn't think about what i was typing before i posted the last time.
Posted by: GoBlue4Life | December 10, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Great deal for the Rays.
Anyone saying the Rays got fleeced... how so? Jackson's about as inefficient headcase as you can come by. On top of that, he's arbitration eligible, while Joyce is just 24 and under control for the next six years.
Jackson's mustered a sub-5.00 ERA once, has massive control problems (108:77 K:BB ratio), and is moving to an inferior defensive team which will only hurt him.
Rays get the better end of this one.
Posted by: MorneauVP | December 10, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Wow, for all the complainers, I'd take Jackson for any fourth outfielder LA has (dang, sorry you have Juan Pierre & Andruw Jones' contracts to choose from). Aside from that, his upside at 26 yo is, if not ridiculous, more than a safe bet.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 10, 2008 at 11:29 PM
Sign Cruz, Beimel and Cordero(Minor League Deal).
Posted by: TigerFan54 | December 10, 2008 at 11:29 PM
solid trade for the Rays. i think joyce is going to be a solid OF for a long time to come. reminds me of david justice for some reason. maybe because he looks a lot like justice at the plate.
Posted by: ilulic | December 10, 2008 at 11:49 PM
the thing that no one ever mentions is that what happens if the tigers pitchers have bounce back years. If knapp can get our pitchers back to throwing strikes we got a pretty solid rotation. Verlander going back to his 06 07 form. Bonderman coming back healthy with 2 to 3 mph added to his stuff, galarraga continuing where he left off. Then we have jackson, robertson who you never know, can regain some of his old form and throw his slider again. Then you have dontrelle, another option to bounce back. The tigers will sign a veteran pitcher no matter what. And add a good closer, no top of the line closer, because we havent spent much this offseason. We need a good closer thats proven he can close games. And what if zumaya comes back and stops hurting himself. Rodney is a lost cause. We have a pitchers that have shown they can be amazing at times, just lost their game. If we can have bounce back years, dont count us out. If we dont have bounce back years, well then lets get ready for another 08.
Posted by: tigers313 | December 10, 2008 at 11:58 PM
tigers313, that's a lot of 'what ifs'. don't get me wrong, if i just looked at the tigers rotation on paper, not knowing their problems in '08, i'd say they look pretty darn good. but unfortunetly, there are way to many question marks. for a team like the tigers to compete in a division like the AL central, they need to get rid of those questionmarks.
remember this, indians got a lot better in just a couple days, and they are not done yet. they are a lot like the tigers, hoping for a few guys to 'bounce back'. i still think they are a team to beat in the central. you also know how the twins are, always hanging around, never go away. who knows with the white sox, williams will find a way to put a solid team on the field and believe it or not, the royals are a lot better. so the tigers need to do something if they want to avoid another '08 in '09.
Posted by: ilulic | December 11, 2008 at 12:10 AM
"Sign Cruz, Beimel and Cordero(Minor League Deal)."
Beimel was awesome in LA, still has the knack of limiting the long ball but gave up some key hits. If he can regain the consistency, he'd be a great pickup. Juan Cruz, my opinion is everybody has keyed in on his two-seamer, he hasn't been fooling anybody. Cordero is a sleeper if he's healthy. Ya'll know the capital "IF" thang.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | December 11, 2008 at 12:21 AM
Pretty nice deal for both teams. Edwin's season could have been a fluke but when you have 96 mph cheese like him and finally have a solid year, you gotta think he can only get better.
Detroit is doing an impressive job this offseason in filling holes inexpensively, we'll just see how it works out in the regular season. They still need a reliever though.
Posted by: bigpat | December 11, 2008 at 12:23 AM
i totally agree. i just gotta think positive. we need to dump sheff. and thames can hit the ball, but did you see him at the end of the season in left field, he makes carlos look like a gold glove. leyland should have never shifted the d around. i believe carlos could play ss still. they all talk about his bad knees, but if im not mistaken, wasnt it his horrible back and hemerhoids that kept him out for 1/4 of the season? Jair should have been in our rotation for 08. no question about it. We need a good closer, and two or three pitchers in the pen. I believe they kept larrish as either more trade bait or to replace inge when his horrid contract expires.
I want to have hope that this new pitching coach can really help out our pitchers. he worked with the twins minor leaguers and the only thing twins have besides m and m is a solid solid pitching staff that throws a ton of strikes. All our pitchers, and i mean all couldnt throw strike, or throw a strike for a strike out.
people complain about our new signings, but who cares if evrett cant hit, and who cares if they say laird gave up on texas and complained. both have been proven players for their defense. we dont need 9 players who hit 25 hr 75 rbi each. thats why we have grandy, maggs, and cabby. if guillen can stay healthy and sheff can stop complaining and is actually as healthy as he says, we get to see one guy come back from a crappy year and another guy hit his 500 hr.
but now im just rambling. i dont get to talk baseball much.
Posted by: tigers313 | December 11, 2008 at 12:24 AM
I am disappointed to see Joyce. I hope Jackson gets control.
Posted by: Calriver | December 11, 2008 at 01:46 AM
to see joyce go i mean
Posted by: Calriver | December 11, 2008 at 01:47 AM
The Tigers could be a contender in 09 if Jackson can continue to improve and Verlander and D-Train can bounce back from disappointing season (i think D-Trains gonna be trade to the Red Sox soon or later though).
Posted by: JT89 | December 11, 2008 at 03:41 AM
Woah, I'm shocked at this, but I love this deal. Even though Jackson pitched a little above his peripheral stats, he gets out of the AL East into the biggest ball park in the AL Central. Joyce looked like a pretty good player (he almost slugged .500), but you always trade hitting for an equal amount of pitching.
Posted by: rdccdr801 | December 11, 2008 at 03:44 AM
Ejax is an acceptable #5 starter but his 5.30k/3.78bb per 9 inn. is very scary and shows the amount of luck jackson had last year with that very respectable ERA, in '09 bill james gives Jackson another high WHIP number of 1.533, personally i'd be worried about his fastballs lack of movement and his inconsistent slider. Interesting move for the Rays but it does net them about $2.1Mil. in arbitration next year towards two years for whichever slugger falls through to them.
Posted by: CubFanRaysaddict | December 11, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Out of the box thought, the Tigers should try and make him a closer, a lot of his problems have always come when trying to get the line up a second time. If he only had to throw 1 inning, 96-97mph could easily become 100.
Posted by: aj7380 | December 11, 2008 at 10:29 AM
For those tiger fans that dont know anything about ejax, he started pitching when he was 20, he was drafted as an outfielder. He is still learning how to be an effective pitcher, last year was just the start of his career. This will be a great pitcher in this league for plenty of years. I really hope that Joyce can bring some big league ball to Tampa because we just lost a great player.
Posted by: Rayhawk7 | December 11, 2008 at 04:07 PM
Potential wise, steal for the Tigers. But if that potential goes to waste, Rays win.
