« Oswalt Willing To Restructure Contract | Main | Sherman's Latest: Lowe, Saito, Teixeira »
FRIDAY: La Velle E. Neal III has an update on this one - he says a Twins official shot it down. He hasn't heard anything other relievers linked to the Twins.
TUESDAY: According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, the Twins inquired on Rangers reliever Joaquin Benoit. Sullivan says the Twins are willing to trade Boof Bonser. I suppose this could have appeal to the Rangers in that Bonser could be a rotation candidate.
Benoit, 31, posted a 5.00 ERA in 45 innings this year while battling shoulder issues. He's set to earn $3.5MM plus games finished incentives in '09 before becoming eligible for free agency. Bonser is under team control through 2012.

The small problem is that Bonser sucks and Benoit's value is in the toilet.
0 chance this happens unless Sheets is about to sign

Doesn't seem like a Twins move to me, but then again every rumor has pretty much crashed and burned...
How long until the Brian Buscher rumors start flying?
Posted by: MinnesotaMasher | December 09, 2008 at 11:40 PM
I'd trade Brian Buscher for a minor league batboy just to know that he won't be playing for the Twins in 2009.
Hell, the batboy would probably have a better glove.

How bad is it when flashbacks of Koskie look even better year after year?
The gaping hole at third must be cured!

Funny how the team's "big clubhouse leader," Michael Cuddyer, outright refuses to move back there to solve the outfield situation.
Not that I want him there anyway, he gives Buscher a run for his money with the glove, but let's see...
The Twins want Cuddyer around for his "leadership."
Hmm, didn't Delmon switch to playing left field without a word of complaint, and play through an ankle injury for the final 2+ months of the season, also without complaining?
And isn't he currently in the gym busting his ass to drop the weight he added when he couldn't follow his daily workout regimen to let that ankle heal?
But yeah, we really need Cuddyer's "can-do attitude" and "leadership by example." That's worth the $7MM he'll pull in next year... who needs a 23-year-old outfielder whose HRs (though sparse in 2009) are 420+ feet and look effortless when he actually makes good contact?
Nah.

Hoo boy! Now this is the Twins rumor I was waiting for!
Posted by: BadEnoughDude | December 10, 2008 at 12:45 AM
benoit has a pretty live arm doesn't he? i mean, what is boof's value? for one year of benoit, who is coming off arm problems, is he going to be a whole lot better out of the pen than boof who's under control for 4 more years? i don't know.
Posted by: minnesotawins | December 10, 2008 at 01:25 AM
yeah he had a great 07 out of the pen in hitter friendly arlington - 7-4, 82 IP, 2.85 ERA, 87 K, 3.07 BB/9, 9.55 K/9, 1.17 WHIP. not bad at all.
but last year he had those arm problems, and things weren't good - 3-2, 45 IP, 5.00 ERA, 43 SO, 7.00 BB/9, 8.60 K/9, 1.67 WHIP. not good at all. so how confident are the twins that those arm problems are behind him and he will regain his control and durability? i would take a flier on him if it only costs boof or humber, because neither are set-up man quality.

DO NOT WANT
Posted by: Poof | December 10, 2008 at 02:02 AM
Texas should have traded Benoit after 2007, when his value was really high - they might have actually gotten something for him. He was probably overused, and now he's got arm problems. Chances are those aren't just going to go away. If they could get a spare like Bonser for him, fire away!

No thanks.
Honestly I'd just rather keep Boof- really high ceiling and poised to be a pretty good setup man this season.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 10, 2008 at 05:14 AM
I think Boof would benefit from a change, probably to the NL. I think he's still got some value due to some of his upside and the fact that he's under team control for a couple more years I'd like to see us send him to Houston in a deal for Wiggy.

I didn't expect myself to be saying this come the winter meetings, but I want the Twins to keep Boof. He's cheap until 2012 and I think he could fill a very nice setup role in the bullpen this next season.
Posted by: kalarson | December 10, 2008 at 11:19 AM
How come the twins just don't go after Trevor Hoffman? I mean it would be perfect right?
Posted by: Jack Lee | December 12, 2008 at 08:36 AM
Would Hoffman be willing to be a setup guy instead of a closer? Because the Twins aren't going to give him the closing job over Joe Nathan.

Boof Bonser has really high upside? Really?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 12, 2008 at 09:08 AM
Brian Buscher cannot hit LHP to save his life. There was a game in Seattle last year where I honestly felt sorry for both Buscher and Mike Lamb because they looked like bad NL pitchers batting against against LHP.
Brian Buscher is a pinch hitter...think Randy Bush.

Bonser could be an asset to the Twins bullpen. Although he initially didn't want to be a reliever, Minnesota's brass has said the Boof has "embraced" his new role. As we already know, he is cheap and under team's control until 2012, so why not keep him? As a Rays fan and a Bay Area guy like Boof, I'd like to see him eventually come home but Friedman and company have other plans.
