Maybe the Braves can resign him 3/30 with a vesting option.

I like that, he can get righties out too...for an Affeldt price would be a good signing

Do it Omar...

Ohman will be a Brave next year. They are the only team to even offer him a contract.
Posted by: BravesRed | December 17, 2008 at 01:40 PM
Mets need 1 more bullpen signing. Other than K-rod, Putz you have a bunch of question marks.

soupdujour: 3/$30MM for Ohman? Are you freaking serious? That proposition is just unbelievable.
He's due for something more like 3/$12-13MM.

$10 mil per for 3 seasons of Ohman? There are MANY better ways to spend money effectively.
Posted by: coryjwilson | December 17, 2008 at 01:52 PM
I can seriously see the Mets taking Ohman away from us but seriously overpaying to do so...
Posted by: bartendermlb | December 17, 2008 at 01:53 PM
cory,
I'm pretty sure he is poking fun at the Furcal deal, saying we should just give him the money...maybe he will actually stick with us...
Posted by: bartendermlb | December 17, 2008 at 01:54 PM
im not sure if this has been discussed before, but would it be possible, when listing a players name, to have it link to his baseball-reference.com page? i frequently jump from this site to baseball-reference for stat lookups, and this will just simplify the task. or if not baseball-reference, another website full of the players stats.

I think the Braves will make a pretty good effort to re-sign Ohman considering the have struck out on every other free agent (excluding David Ross). A bullpen with Gonzalez, a healthy Soriano and Moylan, and Ohman would be very very good. It could definitely shorten games which would be huge due to the uncertainty of the rotation.

Guys it was a joke referring to the Furcal deal.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 17, 2008 at 01:57 PM
Ohman is probably my favorite Lefty (Non-Closer) out there, because of his holding his own against Righties.
Get it done Omar.

He was making fun of the Furcal situation.

I say offer him 3 years 15 mil. He is a proven reliever and we need to be able to sign atleast 1 free agent this year that wont be a backup.
Posted by: David | December 17, 2008 at 02:01 PM
I'm a little shocked the Indians are one of the teams looking into him.. With Wood, Lewis, Perez, Betancourt, Smith and Kobayashi, the bullpen seems pretty deep already. Plus there are a few guys that may be able to step-up this year, like Adam Miller, Jon Meloan and a few others... If we do acquire him, it makes me think we might put one of our relievers on the block to try to get a starter.

well i guess we have our vote for Mets Bullpen left to spell Feliciano. I'd be more worried if it was Beimel. We did OK against Ohman last year and he has a 5.29 era vs the Phils in the last 3 years. I'm fine with that.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 17, 2008 at 02:03 PM
He is not worth $10M a year that is for sure. Although all the free agents out there that have signed with teams are getting overpaid.

Even this article says he wants a two year deal. I don't know what the Braves have offered, but my guess is slightly less than the $4M that the market says he is worth. If that is the case then Wren needs to pony up and just make a two year/$8M offer. If they HAVE offered that and Ohman can get a better deal then wish him luck. Moylan (if healthy) can get lefties out.

I know this had nothing to do with Ohman, but why are the Braves not going after Wolf, Garland or even Perez. We need pitching and as much as I like Smoltz and Glavine, we cant wait to see what is going to happen with them and allow all the other free agent pitchers sign else where. The Peavy deal blew up, AJ decided to go with the team that buys everyone, please sign atleast 1 pitcher who can lead our staff.
Posted by: David | December 17, 2008 at 02:06 PM
David - I agree, sort of. I really like Perez, except for the fact he walks too many batters. Seems like he would be a good value and he is young. But I am wondering if Wren has something cooking (like the Greinke, Maholm, Snell rumors) and is waiting to see if they play out. My guess is the Furcal deal with decide some stuff that might be in the works.

Ohman to the Mets or Braves makes perfect sense.
Gotta have a good LOOGY to take care of them Phillies.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 17, 2008 at 02:13 PM
I tend to think of Ohman as more than a LOOGY. Up until the end of last season (when he may have been worn out), he was good against righties as well. Having Ohman, Moylan, Soriano, and Gonzalez would be a real luxury because you potentially have 4 guys that can get out lefties and righties. So pay the $4M/yr and sign Ohman, I say. The bullpen may be shaping up to be the only strength the Braves have.
Posted by: Brad426 | December 17, 2008 at 02:19 PM
I think the Braves need to bring Ohman back just because Moylan wont be back for the start of the season and Soriano is coming off an injury too. Morton is out for the season too according to cbs sports. That leaves us with Gonzalez, Acosta, Boyer and Carlyle. Unless the Braves have someone coming up from the minors or are planning on signing someone we have not heard about yet, signing Ohman is hugh for us.
Posted by: David | December 17, 2008 at 02:31 PM
The Mets should sign him up alone just to hear his amazing Harry Carey impersonation. It's dead on perfect!! He introduced the Braves on a FOX game of the week over the summer doing his impersonation.
I think he would be a solid addition to the Mets but not for more than 2 years. Seems like he is a clubhouse clown too that keeps everyone loose.

I've wanted this guy for the Mets ever since the end of the season. Get it done!
Posted by: squid92 | December 17, 2008 at 03:09 PM
"Morton is out for the season too according to cbs sports."
That was talking about the end of last season - he was shut down in early September.

Reason the Indians are involved is because they only have one lefty in their pen right now and that's Raffy Perez. He was very overworked last year and another guy like Ohman would be a perfect fit. The Tribe does have some young guys but if you can get Ohman for 2yrs and total of $6-7M, then it'd be worth it.
Ohman isn't worth more than $3-4M a year. He was pretty bad in 2007 and was never that great before. He did have a solid year but tailed off a lot in the 2nd half. Might have been due to fatigue from adding nearly 20 innings to his workload from 2007, but there's better options out there.
I'd rather go after Shouse on a 1yr deal with an option....
Posted by: Hermie13 | December 17, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Gotta love the Mets and Indians being aggressive as hell to fix their 'pens. Hermie is right about Perez being overworked. Plus, you still don't know if Kobayashi can give them a full solid year. Wood and Miller have health concerns, and young guys have to prove themselves. Lewis finished strong in a non pressure end of the year, but was sent to AAA early on to work on his control. The depth would do wonders.

You're right there are certainly a lot of options for the bullpen, the problem is for the Tribe that none of them, with the exception of Wood and Perez, are locks for their pot in the pen. Betancourt was a disaster last season, Kobayashi couldn't handle the increase in innings, Lewis was up and down from the minors and battling velocity loss, Miller can't stay healthy, Meloan wasnt good recently as a starter in the minors, Mastny is gone to Japan, and Mujica can never seem to put it together.
I just think the Tribe are doing whatever they can to increase the options they have to go to in the pen to avoid a year like last season.

Brian Shouse would be my first choice for the Mets LOOGY/lefty mop-up guy, but Ohman would be a close second. If you can get him for 2/8, I'd do it. Shouse will probably cost that much as well. Of course, Jeremy Affeldt set the market fairly low, so a team might be able to snag Ohman, Shouse or even Joe Biemel at a very reasonable price.

David,
I believe the CBS report where Morton is "out for the season" is for 2008 not 09. The site just updated on Fantsy to drop him on Dec 12th.
Braves need to rebuild in 09 the and try to compete in 2010 and 11. Too many questions in the starting rotation and in the line-up. Give the best prospects another season to develop and maybe we have beeter luck next off-season in getting an ACE GO BRAVOS...

What ever happened to Joe Beimel coming to the mets. Isnt he this guys type of money rite now. I rather have a guy who have up half the E.R. than this guy.
Posted by: puremetsfan | December 17, 2008 at 11:14 PM
puremetsfan,
Everything I have read is that Beimel is looking for a 3-4 year deal and big bucks. And in this market and economy along with teams just not willing to sign LOOGYS to long term deals I don't see the Mets doing that. I don't care how good the LOOGY is, no more than 2 year deals. Have the Mets not learned from Stanton and Show?
