« Mets Deep In Negotiations With Lowe | Main | Ricciardi: "We're Done" »

Yankees Sign Mark Teixeira

3:58pm: Joel Sherman says the Red Sox were at eight years, $168MM, so the Yankees outbid them by $12MM.

3:38pm: The contract does not include an opt-out clause, according to Danny Knobler.  Knobler agrees with Olney that the Red Sox fell about $10MM short.  He says the Sox are not inclined to react by "stepping up their pursuit of Derek Lowe or any other top starting pitcher."

2:55pm: Olney now agrees it's an eight-year, $180MM deal ($22.5MM per year).  Bill Madden says Teixeira told the Yankees he preferred them all along, after the Angels and Red Sox backed off.  Ha.  Joel Sherman says the Yankees made this decision with the 2010 season in mind, given the weak free agent market.  He says they'll now attempt to trade one of Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Xavier Nady, and Nick Swisher.

2:26pm: Buster Olney says the Yankees have reached an agreement with Teixeira on an eight-year deal worth more than $170MM.

Aside from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here.  Each team's draft pick from the Yanks is pushed back one round - the Brewers get a second-rounder from them for C.C. Sabathia, the Jays get their third-round pick for A.J. Burnett.

2:17pm: According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees are on the verge of signing Mark Teixeira to an eight-year, $180MM deal with a full no-trade clause.

Comments

To add to my previous comment, how about they sign Milton Bradley and Adam Dunn for their bench? When does it end? If the Nationals or Rays all of a sudden turned over a new leaf and started spending like this, there'd be all sorts of negative comments and stories on ESPN by the East Coast biased reporters there. MLB is officially a joke.

Matty...

Dont forget Bubba Crosby being the CF in 05.

Swisher is outfield protection.

As far as Manny goes, it's either the Dodgers or the Marlins; mark my words.

I hope the Mets don't get Manny. Am I the only person who knew that his stint with the Dodgers was all for show? He'd never put that much effort if he knew he was guaranteed money no matter what.

Are the Yanks done?
Going to be exciting to see if they can pull off a WS win
And not be choke artists.... (like always)

Not a Yankee hater by the way

It is stupid that as a fan of the Pirates I have to hope we can come up with enough money to sign Rocco Baldelli and the Yankees drop 1 Billion+ on a stadium, 500+ Million on free agents. This is stupid I think the luxury tax for a payroll over 150MM should be 1$ for every 1$ spent.

"Is someone really comparing Tex' to Giambi? Tex' isn't a steriod ridden player who can't play defense"

Who cares about defense? It is first base. And lets see Tex's gold glove defense in year 6 of this stupid deal. I am not one to bash the Yankees, I hate when people bash the Yankees because they spend. I don't mind that they signed Tex, I just think it is a horrible, horrible deal. Defense.... I see you tried to argue my point on Giambi v Tex, but you conveniently left out the Helton/Tex comparison. Facts are facts. The last 2 mega deals for 1B have been albatross contracts that the team couldn't wait to get rid of. Facts are this. Tex never produced anywhere near the level of Helton or Giambi before they got their deals. They were both vastly superior players to what Mark Teixeira is now. Sure, Tex will be good for a few years, but he isn't worth that money, and you will be wishing he was gone by year 5 or 6, and I will be saying I told you so.

It's times like these that I'm just thankful that my team isn't in the AL East.

C'mon Royals deal for Swisher now.

Major League Baseball needs to do something about this. They won't, but they should. Baseball cannot continue like this and remain popular.

So I guess Buster Onleys column about the Yankees being affected by the fiscal turmoil was just him being clever?

More power to you Yankee fans, the one thing you can't take away from east coast fans is there passion. The streets must be flooded with Yankee banners

Posada can play 2 more years at catcher and then he can retire. And Jeter can move to DH.

Great move by the yankees. And we will have a lower payroll then last year.

I'm going to throw up now. kthnxbye

"nrmax88 are u really trying to argue giambi is a better signing then tex"

Giambi was more productive offensively than Teixeira. 1B is the least strenuous defensive position, although 1B defense is huge. Since the Yankees are an AL team, and thus could stash Giambi at DH if his defense declined and/or he became an injury issue, and still utilize most of his value.

A LOT of Teixeira's value lays in his defense. If that's gone, that contract becomes an albatross. Defense declines more with age than offense. All of Giambi's value is his offense. From a value-conservation standpoint, Teixeira is worse than Giambi.

I'm not one to say this Teixeira contract will be bad, but the Yankees did NOT have nearly as many guys who are in danger of needing the 1B/DH spot before the ends of their contracts on the roster.

And alas
The life of the small market team ends with a swish of a pen
RIP small market teams

"nrmax88 are u really trying to argue giambi is a better signing then tex"

No, I am saying they are both horrible signings. Giambi of 2000 was worlds better then Tex has ever dreamed of being. That didn't end well at all. Same thing with Todd Helton, before he signed his mega deal.

"And not be choke artists.... (like always)"

LMAO.."always" yea cause all the WS parades I have seen the Yanks in dont count as part of "always".

I want to thank the good lord for making me a Yankee fan!

Disappointing. Gah.

Selig has baseball too screwed up! This is a complete and utter joke for the rest of the league.

Yankees yet again trying to buy another championship. Too bad that tub of lard Sabathia will have a 4.50 ERA the rest of his career, Teixeira, the most overated player in baseball will suck in New York, and Burnett won't pitch in more than 20 games for the rest of his career.

Cashman is a genius? Come on, how many Yankee draft picks have actually panned out. The whole team is found gold from other teams.

"2009. First world series to be bought."

Actually, the Marlins bought the series in '97. That's one that is for sure.

For all the Yankee fans who are laughing at Red Sox fans, I would think they would be the ones laughing at you over in Boston. You just gave a mega deal that will become an albatross, and somehow you all think this is great news. That is the funny and ironic part. And I have no bias towards the Yankee or the Sox. This is just a horrible deal. If Boston gave him the same contract, it would be equally horrible.

As an Orioles fan, I am disappointed that we weren't able to get Teixeia. What I'm more disappointed in is the fact that at age 41 I have given up hope that the Orioles will ever be competitive in my lifetime. The players union is too strong to ever allow any type of salary cap, and the Yankees have so much more revenue than the rest of the teams that they can pay the luxury tax out of their petty cash account. I love my O's, and I think that they are headed in the right direction. I just have no realistic hope that they can ever be better than 3rd place, so long as the current economic structure and division alignment exist. I'm not angry at anyone, especially Tex. He gets the money and the chance to win. It just makes me genuinely sad, and now I understand what fans in Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Miami feel like all the time.

I still think this is meant to drive up the price; I won't believe any reports until there is a press release

There should be a Cap, 160 million per team with max contracts at 25 million..
If you can't build a team with 160 million dollars you shouldn't be a GM

So let me get this straight...

Damon, Jeter, Tex, ARod, Matsui, Posada, Nady, Cano, Swisher

CC, Wang, AJ, Joba, (Pet)

Bruney, Coke, Marte, Mariano

... holy mother of god.

Gross. Where is Nick Swisher gonna go?

Something is seriously screwed up here. The Red Sox were reported to be offering 8 years / $175 million, but the Yankees sign Texeira for 8 years / same money?

In order to make up for the state income tax differential, Teixeira has to get about $10 million more from the Yankees than he would have received from the Red Sox. If these numbers are right, he just pissed away $10 million.

Classic Yankee move. They will have signed the three biggest contracts of the off-season. And Yankee fans wonder why everyone hates them ...

I'm still in the camp that the upgrades, while costly, haven't actually improved the team much over what they saw in 2008. How do you improve on Mussina (200 IP, 3.37 ERA, 1.22 WHIP)? Sabathia's AL numbers over the past 1.5 years average out to be very similar (240 IP, 3.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP). Meanwhile, Burnett is good for 150-175 IP with a high 3's ERA. Pettitte pitched 200+ innings with an ERA in the mid 4's (both sported similar WHIPS 1.34 vs 1.42).

Finally, when you get to Giambi and Tex it gets really interesting. Giambi is a defensive liability. No question. However, their offense wasn't that different. Giambi jacked 32 HR's, posted a 128 OPS and received free passes 103 times in just 565 PA. Teixeira had a monster 151 OPS (career high), knocked out 33 HR's and received 116 free passes in 685 PA.

It's a safe bet that Tex in 09 out-performs Giambi in 08, but the gap isn't that huge - maybe 3-5 wins.

Between everything the Yanks stand to gain 7-10 wins over the 08 results. Anything beyond that includes pinning hope that Wang returns to his former self (pretty safe bet), Posada can catch again (not such a safe bet), Joba can stay healthy enough to go 175 IP, and that Hughes continues to develop. Cano should improve but Jeter and Damon regress.

When all is said and done the Yankees have accomplished what they needed to. It was imperative that they sign Tex and CC in order to stay competitive. They could easily end up being the best team in baseball if everything breaks their way. Or they could be a huge disappointment (like this past year). Either way, it's pretty easy to see why everyone will be rooting against them.

OMG this amazing

"2009. First world series to be bought."

Actually, the Marlins bought the series in '97. That's one that is for sure.

But I get your point.

*Typekey...again*

Screw the everloving yankees. I guess Manny is next. I hope they all get hurt.

This is pitiful. Yankees just got rid of some contracts, so that's their excuse to go out and buy the top of the free agent market. 2 best pitchers and best hitter, and the teams who couldn't afford those guys aren't even being compensated fairly in draft picks. A second rounder and a sandwich pick for CC, yippee!!!

Funny thing is, they're probably not done. They overpaid everyone last year to hang around, I hope it backfires on them.

so this is what $418 million buys???

Sabathia
Burnett
Teixeira

Yankeegirl49:
All I'm saying is that this signing does not automatically hand them the World Series
They have to play well to win it

Favorites? Yes, definatly
Winners? On paper, but as a Tiger fan
Paper isn't always right :(

lol...at people crying for salary cap...that 5hit ain't happening anytime soon in bball.

Wow, how about the Yankees build a team for once instead of buying everyone else's best players. This is why baseball is the worst sport in America.

Yankees are a joke.
Can't buy a ring.
Can't wait till they fail.
Biggest joke in baseball history.

BOO YAAA!!!! TO ALL YOU THAT SAID THEY WERENT EVEN CLOSE TO SIGNING HIM!!!! IN UR FACE hahaha

This is so ridiculous. Please for the love of god put a CAP on baseball and get rid of the stupid freakin Luxury Cap. How can teams compete year in and year out with people who can just throw money around like this. Recession What???

"And alas
The life of the small market team ends with a swish of a pen
RIP small market teams"

Snore.

Reigning AL Champs Tampa Bay.

That 2009 World Series banner is gonna look pretty hot in the new Yankee Stadium next to all the other ones since 1999.

Wait...

When you think about this, the core players of the Yankees are split between big money and cheap.

Nady, Cano, Swisher are not making big money. And by Yankee standards Damon and Matsui are on the cheap.

Wang, Joba, Hughes are cheap.

Marte, Coke, Bruney are cheap.

I find it funny, I hate to get personal but Red Sox fans have gotten so smug since '04, all we've heard this offseason from them is how set and complete their team is. They forget that they didn't even win their division in '08, now they're facing an 89-win Yankee team that's added CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixeira.

Good luck with that Boston fans. Go Yankees!

This has been a tremendous offseason for the Yankees. They are now the favorites to win the world series this year no doubt. I wonder how any team can possibly retaliate with the Yankees just dominating. And keep in mind there not even done yet. They still have trade chips in Matsui and Swisher to pursue Manny Ramirez. If they get Manny,Tex,CC, and AJ in one offseason, you have to tip your hat to the Yankees FO.

Pk..I agree with what you wrote in your last post. The games still have to be played and anything can happen. However to say they "always" choke is ridiculous...unless you are 8 years old.

While I'm happy for the Dodgers, isn't there something wrong with baseball when the Yankees can sign Sabathia, Burnett, and Teixeira to a team that already boasts the highest paid player. MLB has turned into an absolute joke. Until the league gets some leverage over the union and implements a spending cap and kicks off about 10 teams or encourage them to spend more, this will always be a league of the haves and have nots.

I wouldn't award the Yankees the 2009 World Series just yet. We all saw how much Sabathia helped the Brewers and Tex helped the Angels in the postseason in '08.

"I'm going to throw up now. kthnxbye"

why? he went to the angels last year and what happened? they lost in the playoffs...

the yankees are just coming off a series of similar contracts from their last round of trying to buy a championship and did they win when they did that? nope...

the two teams in the world series this year, what were their payrolls? ray - less payroll than the yankees luxury tax bill and phils ~ $100 million

I'm fine with all of their spending, especially with the huge luxury tax hit they are going to take, in fact, I hope they also go out and sign manny

IT WILL BE HILARIOUS WHEN THEY FINISH THIRD YET AGAIN!

who says the yankees don't buy championships? lmao, ya, whatever. exhbit a: 400+m committed in one offseason. 1 no trade clause, 1 opt-out clause. ya, this is pretty pathetic. congrats on buying your next 6 championships to go along with your tainted 26 already. it's official, tex, cc, and burnett are nothing but mercenaries. i'm gonna laugh so hard when these deals eventually castrate the yankees 6 years down the line and their bull**** franchise finally becomes crippled beyond repair. here's to wishing for 80's yankees all over again.

With the Teixeira signing, the Yankees offseason reaches over $400 million according to Rosenthal. That's a little pathetic if you ask nearly everyone. The three of the four highest teams in payroll will still be choke artist.

so this is what $418 million buys???

Sabathia
Burnett
Teixeira

Only if your GM is Cashman.

Keep the faith! O's have some up and coming talent!

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US

WOW, nice job cash, a great winter for us yankee fans.

yea yea yea, we know, we bought our team, we overpaid, bad deal, (unless the red sux got him) yadda yadda yadda, come on just get them all out of the way now.

Fact is their payroll as of now is still less than last years. hes the best free agent on the market, but now he sucks and is over rated because he signs with the yankees.

I still don't think the Yankees team is as good as it was from like 1995-2000 when they were far and away the best team in the league. Jeter is terrible defensively now, Damon can't throw, Matsui can barely walk, Arod well is still great but is not the best in the playoffs. Having said that I still think they are a great team I just don't understand the World Series talk.

If the Red Sox add Derek Lowe their rotation is just as good as the Yanks. Their lineup is still solid without Tex. They need a catcher but really they will be fine next year. It will be a close race than everyone thinks.

As a Pittsburgher let me just say THANK GOD FOR THE PENGUINS AND STEELERS.

Good signing for the Yanks, but will this team have more pressure to win a world series than any other team in the history of sports???

People
Salary Caps aren't going to happen in baseball
So STOP WHINING!!!

holy cow !!
What a lineup, what a rotation. They are serious about winning it all.
What if they sign Manny still ?
I dont blame the Yanks. This is a business, and just like any team that could afford to do so, they want a winning team, so they are doing what they can.

I think Girardi's leash just got a tad shorter.

Wow! I really have to say WOW! Not by the signing but by the tremendous amount of ignorant rants. I will not comment on this blog following this.

Fine hate the Yankee's if you want. Fine. The Yankee's did absolutely nothing wrong with the signing. Can some of you get that through your pea sized minds? Huh?

HE WANTED TO PLAY FOR THE YANKEE'S OK! GOT IT, GOOD!

THE YANKEE'S HAD NO INVOLVEMENT UNTIL TODAY. THEY GAVE EVERY OTHER TEAM MORE THAN ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES TO SIGN HIM.

Oh, and our payroll is still at or equal to several other teams following this.

I love some of the faux shock in these posts. These are the Yankees guys, they've been doing the same thing since the 90's (if not well before). Why are you surprised?

Baseball's still going to be the same, the Yankees are going to be the powerhouse of the East now, but the playoffs is a crapshoot.

Still, to compare this to the Giambi deal is ridiculous, and I think we all know why. Teix is a much different player, the type who ages much better into his mid to late 30's.

This is a great signing if you can afford it. Yankees are once again going to be a powerhouse.

Congrats Yankees, glad still Tex ain't in Boston, was way too much for them to throw at one player as have written here over a dozen times in the last week.

Now "tek will not be able to find a job as a 3rd rate plumber anywhere either is an afterthought of this also. Makes my day, since Boras shoved this deal so hard with Theo &co forcing his hand after calling his bluff earlier this week in texas. I like the way it ended up in the long run, Yankees have not 1 a single game, yet are already chalking up a WS? Better prove it on the field 1st boys.

Now go get Man-NY and the NYY off-season will be complete!

A lot of hate for the Yankees and their money on here. No doubt all the haters would be just fine with this if it were their team doing the spending. Grow up.

This was the smartest move the Red Sox made. They're running the Yankees up the flagpole again. What could a team do with that much money NOT invested in one player?

its not the yankees fault they can spend all this money everyone needs to stop bitching...win some world series and get some real fans that dont mind spending some money to watch their team play then maybe you can spend money to jealous assholes.

Everyone one of you forget that the yankees did build the teams of the 1996-2000 world series teams. Then we did not get first round picks sso we have to make up for it some how.

Can someone tell me what their payroll is sitting at right now?

""As an Orioles fan, I am disappointed that we weren't able to get Teixeia. The Rays just won the division last year and went to the World Series. The reason the O's haven't been anything in recent memory is horrible management, there is no other excuses to be made.

actualy real yankee fans want you to hate them ....i love the haters just proves our superiority.......but anyway
the yanks should try and move swisher for a decent bullpen arm or some prospects.....they realy dont need him

the yankees already have the most pressure of any team to win a world series. that is year in and year out. doesnt matter who is on the team, who they sign or dont sign. they expect to win all the time. i dont see that as a bad thing.

Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 23, 2008 at 02:50 PM

Is it me or did they start awarding Championships in December?

Don't count your chickens yet.

The most egregious part of their spending spree is that the taxpayers of New York will have funded $450 million of the new stadium costs, when all is said and done. For those keeping score, that is $410 million spent on free agent contracts. What a disgusting joke that this is where our tax dollars go (I live in NYC).

I am a lifelong Yankees fa and I hate this deal. Now that he is on board, I definately hope he does well and we win a ring but as of today, I don't like it at all. I think he's good, not great. I was really hoping the reports this morning of Washington and Boston were true. I would have much preferred to have Manny. This signing creates the same problem signing Manny would have created, an even bigger log jam in the outfield. But now we have this guy for 8 years. I'm a skeptic, but again, now that he's on board, I will be his biggest fan.

Is it really even fun to be a Skankees fan? Their not building a baseball team they just throw money around like idiots! And people are giving Cashmen props....a freaking monkey could build a team with 200+ million! I hope he doesnt win a thing in his 8 years in New York..Oh yeah we have a 100 mil payroll and have a more recent W.S. then NY

"What if they sign Manny still ?"

You are crazy if you think this is a possibility anymore.

The Yanks just had:
Moose - 12 million
Pavano - 10 million
Abreu - 16 million
Giambi - 20 million
Pet (might b back) - 16 million

Gone... to act surprised that they lost 5 big contracts and signed 3 is ridiculous.

THE YANKEES ARE BUYING THEMSELVES ANOTHER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT $$$$$

Too bad the Yankees can't pay to getthe BETTER part of a players career.

For everyone that is complaining about the yankees Salary Cap atleast get it right. As of right now they are $20M under last years cap if the Tex signing is true, they had Mussina, Abreu, Giambi and possibly Pettite come off the books. Next year they have Damon and Matsui.

HORSESHIT. I hate that god damn organization.

Tim, on ESPN.com(the front page) it says 180MM just a heads up, not sure which figure is wrong.

"Too bad the Yankees can't pay to getthe BETTER part of a players career."

Teixeira is 28. CC is 28. They just did.

"Fact is their payroll as of now is still less than last years. hes the best free agent on the market, but now he sucks and is over rated because he signs with the yankees."

Actually he was overrated way before that, and you will regret this deal. And I can't wait to hear the Yankee fans complain on the radio shows how they sign all these guys and how they still can't win a division. Countdown until Tex gets blown away by Pabelbon in April series in the 9th inning and is then booed for the next 8 years continually.

1997 Marlins payroll: $48MM (7th in majors)

1997 Yankees payroll: $59MM (1st in majors)

TheBigNewYorkeR, there are no real Yankees fans. They just flat out don't exist. They are all frontrunners. So you've got yourself a bit of a paradox there.

Manny -> Queens '09

Look, the Yankees have almost $90 million coming off the books, they have another potential $45 million off next year (Damon, Matsui, Nady and if Pettitte is signed to a 1/10 deal) and CC could opt-out after 3 years. This isn;t as much of a payroll deal as the non-Yankee fans are making it out to be.

They offered CC what they had to. They were $500k more per year than the Braves on AJ and $1 million+ over on Tex. Stop your whining about big markets versus small markets. That argument has been around MLB for 100 years. These could be good or bad signings, but every team has a rich owner who could have made these deals. The Yankees pulled the trigger and you lambaste them for it. If they didn't you would lambaste them for that, too.

At the end of the day, the picked up the 2 best FA pitchers and the best FA bat to fill their most glaring needs. Hate them all you want, but that is all you could ask out of the team you root for.

I wonder how many Yankee "fans" wouldn't be Yankee "fans" if they don't make it to the playoffs. I bet about 50% to 60%.

As a Red Sox fan I didn't even want Teixera. Why would I want my team to buy a WS. Baseball is a f--cking joke. He should have went to Baltimore or Washington and been the hometown guy and even out the league a bit. But once again, the Yankees go out and spend 418 million in a offseason. I guess the way to buid a franchise is purchasing other teams best players.

"This was the smartest move the Red Sox made. They're running the Yankees up the flagpole again. What could a team do with that much money NOT invested in one player?"

Posted by: coryjwilson

what type of idiotic statment is that......what you fail to relize is money is of no issue to the yankees if there was a hole that still needed to be filled and the best player was out there RIGHT NOW the yanks would still sign him.....for instance if there was a big time centerfeilder on the market right now the yanks could still through another 100 million at him........we aint the redsox.......WE SIGN WHOEVER WE WANT! YOU SIGN WHOEVER WE DONT WANT!! GET IT

I guess the Sox will sign Tek and trade for Salty now to get a power hitting catcher of the future. They need some pop at the bottom of the order now.

The Yankees and most, not all, yankee fans make me sick. How many $20 million dollar a year guys do you need. I'm embarassed for you. You're now in a no win situation. If you win the WS, who cares, you bought it, and if you don't, you're the epic failure of all time. Baseball really needs to take a hard look at their current setup, this has become a joke.

Well, for once everything went well this off season. :D

Let's hear it Red Sox fans, "Wah, wah, wah!!! Yankees suck for doing something that WE were about to do! We didn't want him anyway, so there!!!"

Yes it is fun being a Yankees fan but I still don't like this deal. Who said you have to build a team from scratch to love it. Just because thats the way your team does it doesn't mean thats how it has to or needs to be done. Worry about your team and stop worrying about what the Yankees do and how much they spend. Save yourself the tears.

I hate the Yankees. That's all I'm gonna say.

Cashman said if the season started today, Swisher would be the 1B. He did not say Swisher is our new 1B.

"I am a lifelong Yankees fa and I hate this deal. Now that he is on board, I definately hope he does well and we win a ring but as of today, I don't like it at all. I think he's good, not great. Great post. I feel just like you, only I am not a Yankee fan. I am glad there is atleast one of you who realizes this is not a very good signing. Sabathia was great. I don't even mind Burnett. But I hate, hate, hate this deal, for any team, not just the Yankees. 8 years for a firstbaseman? Gross.

Hey Red Sox fans,

SORRY ABOUT YOUR DAMN LUCK!

sox fans have every right to be confident... sure you guys have had much more success than the yankees inrecent years, so you have bragging rights, but dont say this is a bad signing, hes over rated, hes not a real good player, when every sox fan wanted him before today. come on guys, just give props.
