Yankees Sign Mark Teixeira

3:58pm: Joel Sherman says the Red Sox were at eight years, $168MM, so the Yankees outbid them by $12MM.

3:38pm: The contract does not include an opt-out clause, according to Danny Knobler.  Knobler agrees with Olney that the Red Sox fell about $10MM short.  He says the Sox are not inclined to react by "stepping up their pursuit of Derek Lowe or any other top starting pitcher."

2:55pm: Olney now agrees it's an eight-year, $180MM deal ($22.5MM per year).  Bill Madden says Teixeira told the Yankees he preferred them all along, after the Angels and Red Sox backed off.  Ha.  Joel Sherman says the Yankees made this decision with the 2010 season in mind, given the weak free agent market.  He says they'll now attempt to trade one of Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Xavier Nady, and Nick Swisher.

2:26pm: Buster Olney says the Yankees have reached an agreement with Teixeira on an eight-year deal worth more than $170MM.

Aside from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here.  Each team's draft pick from the Yanks is pushed back one round - the Brewers get a second-rounder from them for C.C. Sabathia, the Jays get their third-round pick for A.J. Burnett.

2:17pm: According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees are on the verge of signing Mark Teixeira to an eight-year, $180MM deal with a full no-trade clause.

Bloodysocks:

You can in the same breath say that the Yanks don't develop homegrown players and say all we do is throw money at FA. We have several homegrown players including a core of Jeter, Pettite, Posada and Rivera who've been with us all their careers, except Pettite who was gone for 3 years. We also brought up Soriano who was traded for Arod. Wang, Cano, Joba, Kennedy, Hughes, Cabrera and Gardner were all homegrown. And smart minor league trades/FA signings brought in Brian Bruney, Edwar Ramirez and Alfredo Aceves. What we don't have on the major league level or can't afford to trade for we sign if available.

Good Call ChiCity Sox....lets just wait to play the games!

if they trade damon, then this would be the projected lineup:

Jeter SS
Cano 2B
Texeria 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Nady RF
Swisher DH
Posada C
Melky CF

YanksFan,

I don't recall saying that the Yanks don't value homegrown talent. My point was in response of your assertion that it doesn't matter if one acquires a player for $20mil/year on the FA market or through trades and/or development.

I think the Yanks have a lot of great young talent, and the Sox have been successful as well. Keep in mind that we've both had very good records most of the decade, so we aren't exactly getting #1 draft picks.

But it seems the Yanks org is getting more and more tired of development which is a little odd considering they owe a lot of their 90s success to their homegrown talent. I've heard mostly disdain over the last year or two with players like Melky, Cano, and Hughes. I'd take the last two in a heartbeat personally. And what's gonna happen if Joba doesn't win at least 15 games with a 3.5 ERA this year?

YankeesFanSince78,

Did you not see the differences in slot price?

Check the below and you'll see about Porcello.

The main point is that the Yanks can AFFORD mistakes in FA's and draft picks because they can go ahead and sign a Burnett to make up for a Pavano, for every Brackman that busts, or potentially busts there's a Joba that doesn't. Does the PIrates scouting suck, YES, but the Yanks can suck as well but it doesn't matter. As long as they can spend they'll win. If the Yankees were a football team in the NFL they wouldn't even compete. Oh and Cashman hasn't done that well in the draft. I wouldn't put him in the top 5-10, maybe the middle of the road and if they didn't have unlimited resources it wouldn't even be that good.

this will be the funniest thing when the yankees get beat out by both the red sox and the rays

The Yankees will go to the playoffs but I dont think there winning the world series

A) Was'nt Brett Favre and Mangini supposed to save the lowly Jets?LOL!!!
B) C.C.has a 7 run ERA in New York. He also can't beat Beckett when it counts.
C) Burnett will be on the disabled list guaranteed.
D) Tex only replaces Giambi's power numbers but nothing more added.
E) Abreu is gone.
F) Jeter's age catches up.
G) Joba's shoulder is yet to be proven.
H) Yankees weak bull pen still the same.
Finally, NY is the dead meat in a Philly/Boston sandwich!

Ok guys ur just jelous that the yanks r gonna win the ws for years and years to come ok. Tex is 3x better than giambi and hes a great swich hitter and a gold glove 1st baseman

Good all around team right?

Ha,ha,ha, this is great losing out on Tex,at least the Yankees have A-rod and C.C who can't beat Boston October.

this will be the funniest thing when the yankees get beat out by both the red sox and the rays

-----------------

Maybe you should worry about your own team brewersfan, who will be terrible next year without Sabathia

And just because they came in 3rd place in 08 doesn't mean it will happen in 09

Look at the Rays in 2007 and 2008....We all know 1 year can make a difference

Ha,ha,ha, this is great losing out on Tex,at least the Yankees have A-rod and C.C who can't beat Boston October.
--------------------

Who cares, the Red Sox got beat by a team who never even played in Ocotober, that's funny too

Tex isn't worth the money,he is worth at most$18- million. But he is good.

Well I'll certainly agree with you there

im a yankee fan and i think that red sox have a 0% chance after missing out on the tex of makeing the playoffs only if the sign manny (they will never sign) , milton bradley, pat burrel(old), they need to sign a power hiter because fat ass big papi can't hit for many thats why they need a power hiter. there better trade there shity prospects for hanley ramriz
who they traded beckett who gets hurt alot and mike lowell who no one knew who he was than he won ws mvp i will give him that but still u have a amazing hitter soon to be the best shortstop in the league(after derk jeter retires) and u trade him and try to get him back that is the dumbest thing i ever heard. boston SUCKS

yankees 27!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bosoxtrade,Jacoby, buchholtz,Lars for Hanley and sign Sheets for 2 years at 10 per and add a 1 year club opt.
