Jones Has Interest In Returning To Atlanta

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andruw Jones has interest in returning to the Atlanta Braves, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports.

In a video on the TV station's Web site, Jones is shown working out with current Braves Chipper Jones and Brian McCann.

"It would be nice to kind of finish my career here," Jones told the station from an Atlanta batting cage.

The station also interviews McCann, who said Jones, 31, looks great.

Reporter Buck Lanford notes that the Dodgers are supposed to trade or release Jones by Thursday.

he is just saying anything to get a job somewhere the guy is a bum.

That dodgers contract is still a daily source of amusement.

Sign him up for cheap! If he does not pan out, then it did not cost much money. I would love to see Andruw roaming the outfield in Atlanta again, hopefully he will lose a little weight and prove that he has not lost it. If he hit .240 with 25 HR and 80 RBI it would be good.

sorry but this just makes me sick! Im a Dodger fan and really hoped this guy would just turn it around.. I actually felt bad for the guy. I didnt boo him at the stadium. I feel like he stole something from me. You braves fans should shun him now. Boo for ME even though im just an idiot Dodger fan that really just wished for more! Andruw dosent deserve to play..

andruw actually looked pretty fit in that video...I always liked Andruw, just need some production out of him if we take a chance on him. Maybe we get Lowe, Sheets and Andruw? Ill take that over just Lowe and maybe someone like Dunn, cuz I actually think Frenchy will bounce back, Kotchman will be good and Yunel will have a break out year, so the offense should be fine...

Get him away from Brian McCann!

That fool ain't good no more cuz he stop taking steroids!! When ever you stop taking steroids you get fat, that's the reason he's outta shape!! He's no good!!

I think he was such a freakish athelete that he could eat what he wanted and just sit around all winter and come into spring training and get it done for the most part...when he was younger. Now that hes older that laziness will have you out of baseball real quick...Plus he had a knee injury, if hes willing to give us a "deal" like league min, Id welcome him bk in a heart beat

I would have no problem with bringing AJ back. Who knows, we sign him for cheap and if it works, great. If not, no harm done. I'd give him a deal laced with a ton of incentives.

What a coincendence that when the Mitchell report came out, he's career starting declining!!

I ahve to say, Andruw looked to be in good shape in that video. Maybe the light bulb finally went off in his head. He can't be washed up at 32 years old. Reality is he isn't going to take the league minimum, but maybe he will sign cheaply and be a pleasant surprise.

"Get him away from Brian McCann!" - Stephen Peele
Hahahh!

Seriously though I say sign him for 400K and give it a shot. I wonder if they can put a stipulation in his contract requiring him to lose 25 pounds by the end of spring training. I wouldn't be that surprised if Andruw gets his act together and really applies himself between now and the regular season, then has a decent year for the Braves.

He did look like he wasn't fat. I mean he looked buff. And the video of him hitting I swear one looked like it was opposite field LOL. I agree with earlier get him away from Mac! LOL

I would sign AJ to a league minimum deal with the provision that he goes to see a Psychologist.

i say let him pay to play on a team.

finish my career here?

the dude should still be in his prime. Why is he already worrying about where he finishes his career and not just getting back on track.

He's destined to fail

What a bargain if he does get back on track. If we were to get Dunn and have the old Andruw and also Frenchy get back to normal, Goodbye outfield power outage!

I don't know if he will finish his career here with Schafer/Gorky's/Heyward waiting in the wings. Maybe he will have a decent year wherever he goes and get his numbers up so that he can go to HOF

Anyone notice how slow and long his swing still is, especially compared to McCann? He is still diving for everything low and away, even in the cages.

even if he turns out to be a bust, and we cant get anything about of him, whats wrong with the idea of having him around to mentor the young guys at spring training. you are talking about a guy who has played in a world series, has a extensive highlight reel and was good for the orginzation while he was here. Surely there is somthing to be gained out of that.

You don't go from being the best CF in the game, a 10-time GG winner, and a career season 2 years ago to out of the league by age 32... Just doesn't happen!

AJ will get signed by the Braves and WILL win
Comeback Player of the Year in '09. If there's anything that can get him back on track it's teaming back up with Bobby Cox (his favorite manager & father figure)... I can't wait to hear him & Chipper referred to as "The Jones Boys" again! If all goes well he can be a gamer this year for the Braves who desperately need some OF power!

"finish my career here?

the dude should still be in his prime. Why is he already worrying about where he finishes his career and not just getting back on track."

That's what I was thinking. He's kind of young to be talking about finishing his career. At least if he has any confidence in himself. I don't understand what happened to this guy.

If he brings Jenny Craig with him I would sign him.

Andruw may have taken the fork out of his mouth, but judging from the almost comical way he drops his shoulder just taking swings in the cage is proof that nobody can take the fork out of his back.

"Get him away from Brian Mccann!"
ha

NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear God please keep andru jones the EFF out of Atlanta.

Andruw and Frenchy - co comeback players of the year

Braves - 2009 WS champs

he is supposed to have lost weight is in good shape and is working hard to find his stroke. he will have to sign a very cheap deal and atlanta would be foolish to pas him up for peanuts

"finish my career here" is just a generic sports term. Everyone says it.

I think Andrew would be a fit, because none of the young CF seem ready. I mean if he is out there what is the difference if you have a young guy out there, the production is probably going to be about the same unless he is the Andrew of old, then your looking good. Sheets to the Braves would be a nice addition but at what cost will it take and how many years?

A very good low risk/high reward guy. If there is anything left in Andruw, Bobby Cox is the man to bring it out.

I don't buy that he's PED user. He has just always depended way too much on his raw talent. To achieve as much as he have offensively while ALMOST ALWAYS swinging at bad pitches, is actually qutie amazing as it is. He needs to become wiser to compensate the natural slow down of his bat speed.

if you can get him for the league min. and he has lost wait wren would be stupid to not give him a shot. I do agree I wouldnt want him talking to my younger players unless someone wise is around but I mean you all remember andruw when he was good. the only difference between when he was good and when he wasnt appeared to be a fat ass. id take him to spring training with me.

That fool ain't good no more cuz he stop taking steroids!! When ever you stop taking steroids you get fat, that's the reason he's outta shape!! He's no good!!

Did you ever actually watch/see Andruw before the Mitchell report came out? He was never what you would describe as buff, and Braves fans have been complaining about him looking pudgy since around 2005 or so.

lol just get him some juice he'll be that trim fast young player again

The low risk/high reward would certainly depend on how much the check the Braves ended up paying.

Homers are down all over baseball the past few years. Various reasoning there. Jones is a real enigma.

I am sorry for all the braves fans in this that believe that andruw is a high reward guy if he turns his slump around. But the chances of that happening and him hit 25 homers and 88 rbi's which someone said earlier, is like saying that babe ruth is the worst player of all time which isn't true. Andruw will be a huge disappointment. I read that in the dominican winter league he is playing in, he is batting like .188 with like 13 strike outs in 47 at bats and has like 8 or 9 hits only. That stinks! If you want him, then take him, just be prepared to go from a standing ovation on opening day to cheering for a pitcher when they hit a ball farther than him, (90% of the dodger games I saw, the pitchers hit the ball better than him, jones struck out, lowe flied out to the wall.)

I really think AJ has just lost his swing. Completely. He has no idea what he's doing at the plate.

Even in the film clips on Fox news, it looked like he wasn't making solid contact - in a batting cage! But he did look pretty fit.

He's got enough potential that he's worth offering a minor league contract, with some modest bonuses for time on the major league roster (he's already being paid $22 mil for this year, even if much of it is deferred... money shouldn't be an issue).

But he needs to go almost back to instructional league, to relearn hitting.

My only fear is that Cox falls in love with him all over again, and plays him to the detriment of the team. Aside from that, I don't see any downside.

Geez... I wouldn't have much of an issue with him coming back as a backup outfielder, so long as Bobby Cox remembers he's a backup and seriously limits his ABs. And who knows? I guess there's always a small chance he remembers how to hit, but I'm not really thrilled about the Braves fielding that experiment.

We should sign him as a backup outfielder, then when he does well in limited at bats we'll trade him to the Dodgers at the deadline!

"We should sign him as a backup outfielder, then when he does well in limited at bats we'll trade him to the Dodgers at the deadline!"

Maybe for Furcal!

if anything having him at the beginning of the season will allow them to put shafer in AAA. I really dont want any of those prospects rushed.

Also if he pans out and he is hitting around .250 and projecting around 25 HR's i say keep him and let shafer stay the whole time in the minors this year. i really think that kid needs some more time in the minors.

dodgers#1fan,

Where did you get those numbers from? According to MiLB.com, Andruw played just 5 games in the DWL with a grand total of 16 ABs. His AVG was .188 as you stated and he did strikeout 8 times, but he did also manage 6 walks. Anyway, that's way too small of a sample size to draw any meaningful conclusions from.

I do doubt that Andruw reaches the numbers some on here are hoping for, but if he can still provide above average defense in CF and even post a .700-.750 OPS against LHP in a platoon role (despite his terrible play he was still at .631 last year) that would be very valuable to a Braves team that has little in the way of CF options against lefties. I don't think those numbers are that far-fetched, and if he just get back to his 2007 form with the bat (.222/.311/.413), his defense makes him around average for a starting CF in terms of total value.

drumzalicious brings up a very good point with regards to Schafer too. The kid really, really needs some time in AAA to try and work on his problems against LHP if nothing else. He posted a .199/.306/.299 line against them last year in AA. Even if he does look ML ready, he's likely to need a RH platoon partner in CF, at least early in his career, regardless.

I wonder if he would get pitched to better if he batted infront of chipper?

Sorted by WPA, these are the worst 5 players in MLB last season. WPA is the last column. Francoeur was by far the worst in the league.

Felipe Lopez - - - 143 100 28 2 6 8 64 46 43 82 .283 .343 .387 1.03 -2.33
Michael Bourn Astros 138 178810 4 5 41 57 29 37 111 .229 .288 .300 0.98 -2.60
Yuniesky Betancourt Mariners 153 110 36 3 7 4 66 51 17 42 .279 .300 .392 1.08 -2.76
Carlos Gomez Twins 153 111 24 7 7 33 79 59 25 142 .258 .296 .360 0.99 -2.82
Jeff Francoeur Braves 155 96 33 3 11 0 70 71 39 111 .239 .294 .359 1.10 -4.11

You can't reasonable go into the season counting on him as a solid contributor. RF is just as big a hole as LF.

Lowe would get the rotation stable. However for the Braves to compete Frenchie, Anderson, Escobar, Kotchman, and LF all have to improve and everyone stay healthy. You can't realistically expect that, you can just dream about it.

You need one more year of development for everyone.
sign Dunn and Abreu to 1-2 year deals. Braves make a playoff push or else you use them for trade bait or hopefully get picks from them. We need a 3B prospect to go along with the other kids.

Escobar is fine he doesnt need to improve. just needs to not go on grounding into double play sprees like he did sometime last season.

Kotchman is fine he was dealing with a ailing mother so of course his mind is distracted. he came back after she was healthy and started killing it.

Only person we really have to worry about is Frenchy and he knows if he doesnt get it together this year he wont have a job with the Braves. we have too many OF prospects

who said that have to be "buff" to be on steroids, there's all type of steroids not all of them make you big!! Geek!

In all fairness doesn't just about anyone look fit compared to McCann.....It's okay Brian Atlanta still loves you even if you can only leg out one triple a year. But seriously Andrew Jones for the league minimum, you can't turn that down. His glove in the outfield will save you enough runs to be worth it. And just what if this guy has a couple of good years left him, he could be the bat the braves are looking for

Schafer is not ready for the MLB yet. First he needs to prove his jump in production wasn't a result of the HGH. The guy batted .203 and .240 his first 2 years in the minors and than he all of a sudden takes off and gets suspended for HGH. Second if it wasn't the HGH giving him that boost he still needs seasoning. He wasn't all that great at AA ball last year and like someone just mentioned had a horrible line against lefties.

I know Braves fans will probably freak out now because a Yankee fan criticized their precious prospect so chill out. The kid is still young, it remains to be seen whether he is legit or not, he needs more time, like pretty much every other young player in the game.

I don't mind seeing AJ come back if it's for a small contract with perhaps a team option hoping we get 2 years well below market value as the best case scenario and simply a lost 400k-1 mill as the worst case scenario. He is still relatively young but I do believe, given his recent performance, very close to being out of the league. I'm not sure AJ every loved baseball nor did he have the work ethic and drive to truly be successful at it. AJ genuinely had a Willie Mays type upside when he entered the league at 19 and showed what he could do on the biggest stage possible against the Yankees in the WS. That performance did 2 things though, it set expectations for him extremely high and it probably went to his head. In my opinion, AJ never really came close to reaching his true potential. He lost the speed early on the bases despite still being very quick in the field, he always had the defense but at times was definitely to sure of himself and he simply never put it all together with the bat at the same time. I'm fine with AJ coming to ST assuming the Dodgers release him and battling it out with Anderson, Blanco and Schafer for CF because I honestly think Anderson is the best of the group and yet is far from anything special.

What do you do with those guys then though? Schafer obviously goes to AAA, that is a no brainier but he needs the ABs...so what do you do with Anderson/Blanco? They both have solid D so either would make a great 4th/5th OF but that still leaves us with a surplus. If AJ looks remotely ready to get substantial ABs then I think you have to look to deal Anderson who probably has the highest trade value.

As far as what the Braves should do, I really don't want to see Diaz/Jones in LF. Even if AJ were to come back remotely close to what he used to be, our OF is likely one of the worst in MLB still. I still think we should sign Dunn to LF, Blanco or Anderson can be a late inning sub. I still want to see either Lowe or Sheets signed. I still think we should sign Cruz as insurance for the BP. Those 4 signings give us a decent shot at competing in the NL East I feel but I doubt we win it. For us to win the NL East, 4 of our 5 starters will have to put up #2 type numbers, our pen has to stay healthy for the first time in 3 years, Francouer and KJ both need to bounce back, AJ would have to become at least league average in CF and Chipper would have to play in 140-150 games. Does anyone realistically see all of that happening? It hurts me as a Braves fan to say I find the odds of us winning this division slim to none but that is how I see it. With a healthy Furcal at SS and the Peavy deal along with Vazquez/Kawakami and Dunn in LF, our chances were only slightly higher honestly. It will come as a great surprise, shock and joy to me if I'm wrong but I just don't think this is our year (neither will next year be our year more than likely).

"You don't go from being the best CF in the game, a 10-time GG winner, and a career season 2 years ago to out of the league by age 32... Just doesn't happen!"

If you're an Atlanta fan, you might remember what happened to Dale Murphy between 1987 and 1989. He had the best offensive year of his career in '87, at age 31. Two years later, he hit .228 for the season with an OPS of .660. He struggled throughtwo more years of roughly league average production and was essentially done at age 35.

Andruw's not a perfect parallel - he was never in Murphy's class as a hitter - but it's still a strangely Braves' gold glove center fielder.

The Braves would be stupid not to give him a 1 year deal backed up with incentives. Andruw looks to be in the best shape of the past 4 or 5 years, his knee is clean, and he's got something to prove. 1 year, $2 mil, plus prorated bonuses for at bats, games played, and keeping his average over 260. Give him $50k for every ball he hits to right field and he may just be on the comeback trail. He'd fill the hole in LF well enough, take the pressure off whichever kid gets the job in CF, and he's a fan favorite even though most won't admit to it in public.

Sign him, the moment the ink dries on LA's contract termination.

That "pitching trade" that's been sitting on Frank Wren's desk for 6 weeks? He's waiting to pull the trigger once Andruw signs. Andruw's working out at the Ted with Chipper and McCann, and you know that's not a coincidence or a "feel-good" round of BP. That's a tryout. And if he passes the tryout, you can expect Wren to quickly trade a young OF for another pitcher. Jordan Shafer, Reyes, and maybe Brandon Jones if they're looking to get a #2 guy out of the trade. Adam Harang would be the best bet - the Reds are looking for an outfielder, they have some solid young arms to fill the void, and Shafer and Jones are both lefties. Cinci is going for a youth movement - and imagine an OF of Jay Bruce in RF, Jordan Shafer in CF, and Brandon Jones in LF. I think that would get Harang in Atlanta.

Oops, Aaron Harang. Was just reading a report on Adam Dunn. Sorry, folks.

"and also Frenchy get back to normal,"

Frenchy's normal is pretty bad too.

You can rest assured, "Andy" won't be a backup on a team managed by Bobby Cox. Just watch, he'll trot AJ out there day after day even if he's still hitting like crap. And I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the cleanup spot.

Its time to boot Cox before the Braves finish in last this year.

eeewwwww

4 years? 15 mill per?

I don't mind the rate even though it's to much but I'm not sure I like 4 years. We will see what happens, I'd rather pulled the "trade on Wren's desk" than give him 4 years and close to what Boras asked which was far far more than what the rumors the Mets offered far were.

I would bring him back for a contract below $2MM, nothing more.
