Russ Ortiz pitching in a hitters' park? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. I hope they are only expecting him to be an innings eater, and not a part of their rotation.

After seeing what a disaster he was in 2007 in a pitcher's park I can't say I'm the least bit excited about this deal.

god, the astros management sucks, its like they dont care. what makes this important is that andy pettitte has officially really no where to go, maybe he will actually be a man of his word, shut up, and retire

I thought he was done like 2 years ago. Why don't they just bring back Nolan Ryan - he might be like 60 but I bet he can win more games than Russ Ortiz.

Do they really expect to compete with these type of signing?
What is going to be? their # 2? Lol

It seems like the rest of the league values pitching, while the 'Stros value garbage. What in the world is Drayton doing? Good thing for us Cub fans!

Why are people getting worked up over a minor league contract with a spring training invite? What is there to lose?
If he comes to spring training and gets shelled, he gets released. No big loss. Same kind of thing they tried with Chan Ho Park a year ago.
Let's not turn this into more than it is. It's not like they view him to be their #2 starter or anything.

Dogscoach has it right. It's a depth move, nothing more.

Everyone knowns Wandy is their #2. (Even though he's more like a #4)

If you get the Russ I remember from 03-04 in ATL then you have a dang good pitcher, but I dont see that happening.

I've always thought that if a GM thinks his team needs a player like Russ Ortiz to compete then that GM needs to be relieved of duty. Okay, maybe it's a no risk move by the Stro's, problem is that it's not a high reward move either given what we know about Ortiz. There really isn't any upside since Ortiz won't pitch well enough to make a difference but he might just pitch well enough to get paid. In the best case scenario the only thing this nets the Stro's is a larger payroll.
Should have just stuck a kid out there and let him get experience. I bet the guy they traded last year for Wolf (name?) would look nice as a Ortiz replacement right now.

Once again: it's a depth move. Barring a miracle, he will start the year in AAA, and will probably won't see the majors unless he dominates or if there are multiple injuries to the starting pitching staff--and even then, he's probably behind Nieve, Paulino, and Norris ob the depth chart.

I would have like to have seen Roy's reaction to this.

I think they could have better used that money elsewhere to sign a higher upside pitcher. Heck, Tony Armas Jr probably has higher upside than him; Lance Cormier, even Kip Wells or Mark Redman.

Horrible.

Horrible signing this money could have been used so much better. Why not take a flier on a Mark Mulder or Jason Jennings? Russ Ortiz sucks.

rockstrongo: you're an idiot.

"Why not take a flier on a Mark Mulder or Jason Jennings? Russ Ortiz sucks."
I can think of only 2 pitchers that would have to fear for their lives if they ever pitched in Houston again: Dan Miceli and Jason Jennings.

I sense a reality tv series coming...

You are 100% right. I would like to see Jason Jennings come back to Minute Maid Park against the Astros just so the fans can boo him out of the stadium.
Regarding Dan Miceli, you can't blame him, you have to blame our dumb manager Garner for putting Miceli in way too many games and especially at important times. I always thought that Dan Miceli had dirty pictures or something of Garner, because that is the only reason why Miceli pitched so often in 2004.

This post is misleading. The Astros only signed Ortiz to a minor league contract. This post makes it seem like they signed him to a Major League contract.
Posted by: es | January 14, 2009 at 02:58 AM
Of course it's misleading; whatever makes the Astros look stupid. Granted, they don't always make the best moves - but what team in history hasn't made a bad move? Name one...
Worse case scenario: Ortiz doesn't make the big league roster, spends the entire season in AAA as a back end of the rotation guy, Astros lose a little coin on the deal, he moves on the next year. It's really no worse than the Padres signing Mark Prior. Instead of getting on this site, reading a few comments and instantly getting on the "bash the Astros" band wagon, why don't you read the facts for yourself before jumping to conclusions.
