On this date 28 years ago, the Red Sox traded Fred Lynn to the California Angels for Frank Tanana and Joe Rudi. After six seasons that included an MVP and six all-star appearances, the Red Sox were forced to trade Lynn when the front office failed to mail a new contract to Lynn by the mandated deadline. Without the new contract, Boston was faced with the possibility that Lynn would be declared a free agent (Carlton Fisk was declared a free agent for the same reason). The player's association dropped their case when Lynn agreed to a contract extension with the Angels. With many of this year's free agent class still waiting for contracts to be mailed, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere...

has there been any progress on the Pettitte signing front? I heard there was an offer from the Yankees but I didn't get the details.
Pettitte with the Dodgers? what do you all think?
Posted by: thinkblue | January 23, 2009 at 01:33 PM
The Fred Lynn trade was 28 years ago (1981).
Posted by: Scott Candage | January 23, 2009 at 01:36 PM
I didn't really read the article, but I can't believe anyone would suggest LaRoche for Sanchez would be remotely possible. The Giants already have a ton of 1B/3B types and Sanchez, as we all know, has those flashes of dominance and much higher upside, along with team control for several more years.

Anyone know where i can read the transcript with the cardinals GM getting mad at the fans?
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | January 23, 2009 at 01:37 PM
here i am bracing for the backlash from Giants fans.
Way to stir the pot Cork.
Oh and here's hoping the Mets don't get Juan Cruz.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | January 23, 2009 at 01:37 PM
LOL, what's with those MetsGeek folk? I can't see any benefit Pettitte would have to the Mets at his age, with his injury history, and his salary demands.
Do they seriously think he's going to sign with the Mets for anything less than $10 million after turning down that amount from the Yankees?
Anything more than about $8 million/year is too much for that former PEDs abuser.
If the Mets are going to waste $10 million on Pettitte it would be much wiser to throw that money at Sheets, injury history and all.
Posted by: caseyB | January 23, 2009 at 01:42 PM
Why dont the yankees just suck it up and give him $12 mil? Would Pettite accept that. Come on...its no big deal to there $300 mil payroll
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 01:46 PM
LaRoche hasn't shown anything in the show to give up Sanchez for...
Lowry for LaRoche maybe..
Posted by: 55saveslives | January 23, 2009 at 01:52 PM
The Cardinals should not say anything against their fans.
Posted by: studio179 | January 23, 2009 at 02:07 PM
Yanks shouldn't pay Pettitte more than 10M. He was overpaid last year at 16M. Mussina took less money than him and wasn't even a Yankee homegrown.
I can't believe some of these players. People are struggling in this country to get by and they just refuse millions to play a game or work for 6 months.
Yanks should just sign Sheets for around 6M with another 8M in incentives and an option. Tell Andy to go and get his money somewhere else.

55saveslives I totally agree with you on that. I wouldn't do that trade If I was the Giants.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 23, 2009 at 02:12 PM
I would also like to add that Mo did not get mad at the fans in general. He got mad at an idiot.
Posted by: Cardinals Fan Forever | January 23, 2009 at 02:14 PM
Yeah Lowry for LaRoche makes good sense, and the Giants do have lots of 1B options but none of them are really good except maybe Pablo Sandoval, LaRoche would be a big help as he is pretty defensively sound as well, but with that death valley that is right center I would have to guess they'd rather have a righty.
Posted by: bravo84 | January 23, 2009 at 02:16 PM
wow, please dont link to "Aneheim Angels forever" ever again.
90% of Adam Dunn is Jonny Gomes? There's no way Gomes hits 36 HR in 09, he will be lucky to get half that. Gomes has 1 legit good season under his belt and never ever walks. His career OPS+ is 105? Dunn's is 130, how is that even close?
They replaced about 20% of Dunn with Gomes here, not 90.
Does this say to me that if I start a blog tomorrow and write ridiculous things in it it will get linked here? Tell me I wont!
Posted by: PL | January 23, 2009 at 02:19 PM
anaheim angels all the way is home of the well-respected Chone Projections.
so yeah, if you start a blog tomorrow and come up with one of the top 3 or 4 baseball projection systems and then tell us that Gomes will only produce 20% of Adam Dunn, then i am sure Tim will link it here.
Posted by: James | January 23, 2009 at 02:26 PM
I think the guy who wrote the "90%" statement was being flippant. I doubt he was serious.
Posted by: caseyB | January 23, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Here comes RSD and his eveil mouth. Wang is not an injury risk, he injured his angle in the inter-league games.
You seem to never have anything good to say in here.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 23, 2009 at 02:55 PM
I'm sorry, smoking something?
Comparing jonny gomes to Adam Dunn is nuts.
Posted by: go sox | January 23, 2009 at 02:55 PM
Speaking of smoking something, LaRoche for Sanchez is laughable. If the Giants wanted a one year rental at first base, trading for Nady would be a much better option. The Bucs would need to throw more than a couple bucks in with LaRoche in order to pry Sanchez away. Even Lowry should net a better return than one year of LaRoche.
Posted by: JeffKentMustDie | January 23, 2009 at 03:48 PM
Gomes maybe 40 - 50% Dunn
RSD, u r a total idiot. Yanks will definitely make the playoffs, Red Sux lineup is the big question. Big Big Papi (out of shape Mo Vaughnitis), Lowell (who knows after extensive hip surgery), Ellsbury (no backup, in Crisp, all the pressure is on), Pedroia (definitely won't repeat last year - better hope the league doesn't figure out how to pitch him), Drew (injury risk + might want to restructure contract with another team for 13 mil./per), Manny (oh right he's gone), Bay (I like him), Tek (better off with Shrek), Lowrie (young, unproven) and Youkilis (the biggest head and mouth in the league, not Greek (Jewish). I hate him, I wouldn't take him on the yanks if the red sux gave him to us. I just despise that person and I don't know how, why or if Red Sux fans even like him. He is annoying. Oh yeah he can't even touch Joba.
Yanks on other side of spectrum much more upside:
ARod (odd # year = MVP), Jeter (not what he use to be but still silver slugger shortstop and healthy this year), Cano (new stance upside can only be better, wouldn't be surprised if he out performs Pedroia), Tex (no need to comment), Damon (better player than Ellsbury), Matsui (2 healthy knees, remember averaged 33hrs 100rbi and hadn't missed a game in over 10 years), Posada (better than Shrek no matter what he gives), Nady (I don't think he'll repeat last years production but solid) and CF is hole but you never know Manny in lefty and Damon to center of O. Hudson on the cheap.
Red Sux fans don't get carried away with the rotation either:
Lester(I like him alot but first year of 200 innings and threw alot of pitches)
Beckett (I just feel he's gonna get hurt)
Dice-K (those walks are gonna catch up to him and who knows about all the pitches he's thrown)
Penny/Smoltz (Penny 1st half only pitcher and who knows about Smoltz..we'll see)
Wakefield (I went to school with him and like him, but could go 14-6 or 6-14 who knows)
Buchholtz (who knows - rather have Hughes)
Yankees on the other hand:
CC (if he stays healthy - solid, mechanics are near perfect)
Burnett (my fingers are crossed he stays healthy, he says he has reinvented himself- can pitch just for outs, doesn't over throw all the time any more)
Wang (freak injury - solid 15-22 wins)
Joba (I prefer him in the bullpen, but dominant when healthy)
Hopefully Pettitte or Sheets but if one of the young kids my fingers are crossed - but lots of depth in Hughes, Aceves, Kennedy and Coke.
Yanks 105 - 57
Sux 97 - 65
Rays 92 - 70 (one year wonders)
Yanks WS #27
Posted by: yanksrule | January 23, 2009 at 03:54 PM
RSD, first off, LOL
second, I'm a nyc boy and scorpion bowl is definitely a hick/redneck or something term. I have no idea what that means.
third, alot of what I said above is true, I live and die yanks, so I follow the yanks constantly and have to follow the sux inside and out.
Above correction:
CF is a hole, but you never know, Manny in left and Damon to center or yanks sign O. Hudson to play center, on the cheap (no market for him right now)
Posted by: yanksrule | January 23, 2009 at 05:00 PM
Sux Nation:
Saito was a giant sign. Smoltz, we'll see, Penny and Smoltz could be one dominant pitcher combined, but trust me Penny falls apart in the second half every year. What the sux should do is pitch him just once a week and go with a 6 man rotation. Tazawa who knows. I give sux the edge in the bullpen now, unless the yanks sign Cruz. Don't even compare Papelbon with Rivera, he needs durability and remember Papelboner doesn't have that. That's why he can't start, I don't remember the exact diagnoses but his arm would fall off or something if he started regularly.Yes, CC is fat, but young, and has had no surgeries like Big Sloppy. Maybe they can sumo wrestle during the seventh inning stretch? The chalk ring around the mound could be the sumo ring, I'm just not sure if they can both fit on one mound at the same time. Wang will win consistently and Joba's era will never once approach 4.00 over the next five years.

"Twins Geek speculates on what it would take to sign Joe Mauer to a long-term deal."
There's actually a pretty simple formula for this:
T + D > Y
where:
T is all the money the Twins have
D is the hometown discount
Y is all the money the Yankees have
Unless D is a very large number, the Twins (and baseball, once again) are screwed.

"Win-Win" must be slang for "I'm so high."
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | January 23, 2009 at 06:21 PM
forget Zito, Sabean should've been fired just for giving Dave Roberts $18M for 3 years. Ugh!
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | January 23, 2009 at 06:23 PM
ok, 8-year wonder, yanksrule. I was "wondering" how you've gone this far without a w.s. with a payroll that large...that's the official, 8th wonder of the world right there. It will continue to occur because buying a championship will not work and the AL east will pound whatever b.s. starters you have just like c.c. got hammered at the beginning of this year...good luck old washed up hags
Posted by: TB_RAY | January 24, 2009 at 03:39 AM
: yanksrule- winning 92 games the next year iis not a one year wonder. If the Yanks don't win the WS, then the season is a failure. Burnett will get injured, and CC will not be worth 20+ million in the AL east.
IT should be
Yanks
Rays
Red Sox
but it could be
Rays
SOx
Yanks
depending on injuries/strides made by young players like Upton, Garza and for the YAnks Joba and Hughes
