Brandon Lyon To Sign With Tigers

12:34pm: The AP reports that the deal pays Lyon $4.25MM in guaranteed money, but could be worth up to $500K more.

11:09am: The AP reports the Tigers announced the deal at TigerFest.

SATURDAY, 8:44am: MLB.com's Jason Beck also hears from an industry source that Lyon's nearing a one year deal with the Tigers. Beck expects an official announcement this morning at TigerFest.

FRIDAY, 8:30am: Lyon's agent Barry Meister says, "We continue to work through it.  Everything is moving forward."  Lyon is at home in Utah currently.

THURSDAY, 9:04pm: Ken Rosenthal heard from a major league source that Lyon's close to a one year deal worth just under $5MM with the Tigers. The deal includes incentives.

3:47pm: Jon Paul Morosi takes it a step further, saying the Tigers are "nearing an agreement on a multiyear contract" with Lyon.  The 29 year-old righty started strong with a 1.64 ERA through May, but posted a 6.51 mark thereafter.  He lost the D'Backs' closer job to Chad Qualls in September.

3:27pm: According to MLB.com's Jason Beck, Brandon Lyon is down to two teams and may reach an agreement by Friday.  Beck says the Tigers are one of the two and appear to be in the lead.   According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cardinals are the other contender.  I guess that means the Twins are out.

I watched lyon in AZ and he is a great reliever I think he is worth more then they pay.Nice signing.

Oh yeah, that 4.70 ERA last season sure is great.

Thank you Tigers!

"Oh yeah, that 4.70 ERA last season sure is great."

Because ERA is such a great stat to base a pitcher on.

Lyons away stats: .237 BA, .652 OPS

Good signing by the Tigers

Lyon a Tiger. That's gold.

It's about time.

2yr/25 million is my guess

jk

The Lyon and the Tigers ;-)

26 out of 31 saves isnt to bad.

Perfect signing for Detroit. Takes the pressure off Zumaya and Rodney.

Cardinal fan?! Couldn't have guessed :D

Nice deal for whoever grabs him.

Don't start with this garbage. Designer stats are ruining the game.

It's only a nice deal for whoever grabs him if the terms are nice.

On something like 2/9, Lyon could definitely be a nice grab. But if someone has to give him like 2/12 or 3/16, then I'm not sure the deal is quite so nice.

Lyon's K rate was below 6.00 from 2005-2007, before finally shooting back up to 6.67 last season.

Coincidentally, Lyon's walk rate was 2.68 or higher every season of his career before 2008 when he walked just 1.97 per 9.

Lyon was a victim of bad luck in 2008, although it's unclear how much. His BABIP was .355 this season, WAY WAY up from the .290 and .287 BABIPs posted by opponents in 2006 and 2007.

Those numbers would be a clear indicator, but hitters had BABIP's of over .365 in both 2004 and 2005, so it's unclear which period of time was a fluke.

If Lyon can actually maintain the increased K rate and decreased walk rate while getting some luck, then he could very, very easily bounce back and be a good closer.

It could be a very solid buy-low, but there's definitely some risk involved.

and bears. oh my!

"Don't start with this garbage. Designer stats are ruining the game."

Right, wouldn't want to make million dollar decisions based on the best information. Let's all stay uninformed. If other industries acted this way, we'd still be living in the stone age.

I really like this signing
It shows that Dave actually cares about the bullpen

"It shows that Dave actually cares about the bullpen"

Has there ever been a front office executive that didn't care about bullpens?

I'm pretty sure bullpens are an integral part of winning baseball.

This is exactly what they need , it take huge pressure off rodney and it will make him stepup his game if he wants the ninth. With a healthy zumya and some of the kids coming in mainly fein and perry they could be some what decent and put together what they thought they had last year.

The Tigers bullpen sucks so bad that the addition of Brandon Lyon makes it better.

Let that sink in for a while.

I sincerely hope that we can now stop reading idiotic comments from Tiger brass about F@#$%ey! being allowed anywhere near the mound in the ninth inning. Assuming that Lyon is a closer, the only stats that matter is how many games he saves and how many he blows. Last year, Jones saved 18 of 21 before he tanked, which is an 85% rate. The non Jones members of the pen BLEW 61% of save opportunities. Lyon, meanwhile, saved 26, with 5 BS and 3 holds- an 84% save pct. That works for me. Now get us Jose Cruz and Joe Beimel, and we're competetive again. Don't add any more major league relivers, and we ain't.

Lyon is good, but isn't anything too special. He pitched above-average(in my opinion atleast) in the weakest offensive division in the league.

The Lyon signing is good
But it's going to take more than one guy to fix the pathetic state our 'pen is in

And scrib
I only said "Dave really cares about the bullpen" out of my bitterness that he did not sign a top/ middle tier closer or bullpen arms until just recently
I know that everyone knows the 'pen is the most vital part of a club, and I know Dave does too
It's just his passive way of addressing the biggest weakness on our team that makes me peaved

Quick question:
Does this mean the Tigers r still looking at Izzy?
And
Is Izzy all that good?

well, looks like their wait and see approach might have worked out alright. I just hope this isnt the end of their bullpen moves.

Good signing. Stats at this point dont mean jack until the season starts. No one can predict the future and I am sick and tired of people saying the Tigers wont contend. No one knows that, everyone said the Twins wouldnt contend after Johan and Hunter went elsewhere, and they contended until the very last day of the season. The whole division was weak last year.
This should be an interesting season, every team has made some moves besides the Sox, they traded swisher, but they still cant run.
We made some low key moves and who knows, this might just work out. We keep signing relievers to minor leauge deals, and this is adding depth with relievers that were proven at one point in their career. We had one bad year and the whole world ends, just because we cant spend like the yankees did doesnt mean we wont contend. If we can sign lyon, and maybe another reliever we will be good. We dont need proven relievers to have a good bullpen, we just need the relievers to step up their game.
With a refurbished bullpen, regardless of how bad their stats are, it gives confidence back to the starters in knowing if they pitch until they break they wont watch a bullpen blow a lead 27 times.

Izzy is not that good.

Actually if you want a good Izzy comp, think Fernando Rodney.

Izzy=Rodney?
Rodney=bucket o'crap
Transitive property:
Izzy=bucket o'crap then

Dave shouldn't get izzy then
Maybe it's just me
But
I don't really want two Rodneys on my team,
Let alone in the back end of the bullpen

Pskip: dont forget that we have Perry and Satterwhite who should be good enough to get a call up this year. perry who hits triple digits and Sattewhite who throws in the mid-high 90's and also has a pretty good curve. Both were drafted as RP (DD's big 4 RP) so they could make there way up real fast. they both have pretty good control as well

How could I forget our future bullpen?
I would also add casey fien, rudy Darrow, and Scott green (maybe Brett Jacobson too)

Quick question to anyone:

Do u think that Alex White or Aaron Crow or Tyler Matzek will slip down to the #9 draft pick the Tigers have?
Who would u pick?

Perry or Fien will probably pitch in '09
Both have to work on getting their pitches from elevating in the strike zone
Hopefully Porcello will NOT pitch in '09!!!

As i posted earlier, under a different the "Brewers agree to a two year deal with fielder" post...

Here's an update from Rosenthal at 7:57 EST:

A Major League source claims that the Tigers are close to signing Brandon Lyon to a 1 year deal at just under $5MM plus incentives. Apparently, Lyon saw the Tigers as the best opportunity, despite his agent's rumors that he had received a 2-year $9MM deal from another team.

Posted by: thinkblue | January 22, 2009 at 08:54 PM

that should have been "under a different post"

The Tigers will use Perry similar to what the Mariners did with Brandon Morrow...rush him to the majors as a reliever then eventually start him....Perry will be in Detroit in '09.

"The Tigers will use Perry similar to what the Mariners did with Brandon Morrow...rush him to the majors as a reliever then eventually start him....Perry will be in Detroit in '09.
"

Perry has much less upside than Morrow. The transition doesn't always work. Although I agree that the Tigers should try it. And, Morrow hasn't fully established himself as a starter yet.

"Do u think that Alex White or Aaron Crow or Tyler Matzek will slip down to the #9 draft pick the Tigers have?"

Because of Crow's signability issues, I could see him slip down to the #9 pick.I don't think any of the others will though.

Thanks melonis
Really hoped Matzek slips to #9 tho...

And Perry really doesn't project to b a starter
He was better as a reliever in college
He needsnto work on getting balls low in the zone to b truly effective

"And Perry really doesn't project to b a starter

I do honestly think that Perry COULD be a Zach Miner type in the rotation if he was allowed to work more in Toledo on getting balls low in the zone and refining his pitches. And, even if you need pen help, a BOR starter > a middle reliever.

And remember, Miner only got a limited number of starts so 1-2 bad starts really killed his SP stats (the 8 runs in 4 IP v. the A's one comes to mind)

Although I don't think the Tigers organization agrees with me, as they wouldn't have traded for Edwin Jackson, who is quintessentially the pitcher that Perry could become minus the fact that Jackson throws hard if they think that Perry could be a rotation candidate. It doesn't make sense IMO. Jackson doomed Perry to the pen.

Ha. Enjoy your blown saves Detroit!

pskip and rex: there are multiple mock draft sites that has Matzek slipping to us at 9. I would love for that to happen but in reality we will draft Crow if Matzek taken taken before us

Ohhh....so this is how you make a Liger.

"11:09am: The AP reports the Tigers anounced the deal at TigerFest."

2 Questions was the TigersFest actually a festive event before this announcement, and who is the bum that had to pee in everybody's wheaties with said announcement?

wow 4 dollars and 25 cents is quite a deal

I agree Stephen, wow...either the Tigers are really poor right now or Lyon couldn't find much work anywhere else!

The Cubs should have gone after him instead of trading for Kevin Gregg. He is a better pitcher for the same amount of money. They also wouldn't have had to trade away their best pitching prospect Jose Ceda if they had signed Lyon instead of trading for Gregg.

Red Hot Chili Peppers fans should listen to Especially In Michigan on Stadium Arcadium right now.

haha 92-93, i was thinking about that earlier today. kinda weird how well it fits

He's only gettin paid $4.25? That can't even buy a meal at McDonalds!

Zumaya will come back to life eventually. Zum/Lyon/Rodney is an excellent back of a bullpen. Maybe the hype on the Tigers from last year will come true now.

Lyon replaces Todd Jones. 26 of 31, that's the ONLY stat that matters for a closer. Either you win the game or you blow it. Now it's time to start upgrading the pen. No more of this "hoping" that Rodney and Zumaya are healthy, and that Rodney doesn't go into a fit of voo doo mental midgetry. Sigh Juan Cruz and give up the 65th pick in the draft.

Oh yeah, that 4.70 ERA last season sure is great.

Posted by: CardinalFaninIL | January 22, 2009 at 03:33 PM

umm...seriously, he had 26 saves & 5 blown saves last year; so if the Cardinals (who had 31 blown saves last year) would've had him then, they would have had the best record in baseball (around 112-50) and they would have not only gone to the postseason but they would have been considered one of the favorites!
yeah i'm kind of wishing management could've signed him! its better than having someone like franklin go out there & suck EVERY game! or having management arguing with Tony to get him to put in Motte/Perez to close out games!

Lyon improves the bullpen, which is great for the Tigers. Then again, Lyon is an UPGRADE? Whew, that 'pen is in shambles. Time to find a lefty more competent than Seay. I'd have more confidence in the present day Mickey Lolich.
