« Mets Lose Lowe; What's Next? | Main | Angels Do Not Have Interest In Dye »
10:59pm: O'Brien adds that Lowe did not receive a no-trade clause.
9:43am: According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves agreed to terms with Derek Lowe on a four-year, $60MM deal. For all the talk of the Braves' failed offseason, they've added three quality starting pitchers. Even if Lowe wasn't their first choice, he probably should've been. Ken Rosenthal says the Braves made their four-year offer to Lowe "on the condition that he accept the deal quickly."

Dennis whoever wins the CF job, unless its andruw, will be the leadoff hitter. blanco, anderson, or schafer. If Andruw gets it I would guess Yunel though he loses value hitting there. and the brewers fan if you really believe jeff suppan= derek lowe you havent watched baseball for a long time. Lowe has consistently outperformed Suppan throughout their careers

If we do end up signing Andruw Jones and he ACTUALLY does well enough in spring training to the win CF job (I doubt that though) I'd have no idea who would be the lead off hitter. I would say Kelly Johnson, but I prefer him batter lower in the order.
And as for the age concern for Lowe, seriously folk, we're only counting on him to be the ace for ONE YEAR ONLY. By the time age starts catching up to him, Tim Hudson will be back and Jurrjens will likely have become a dominant pitcher. Come 2010, Lowe could end up being our #3 guy.

Ugh, I hope not.

"Don't expect either NY team to make the World Seires, money does not buy happiness my friend."
Really? Money doesn't buy happiness? Because it buys a wave runner. Try to frown on a wave runner.

I want the old days. The days want the Braves crushed the Mets every single series we ever face them. Now with Lowe, Kawakami, and Vasquez...maybe...maybe I would re-live those moments.

iamnobody, i agree but it seems the most likely solution at this point. I don't necessarily agree but that's what i see happening

Why do you think it won't be Escobar-Johnson?

i have been a braves fan my whole life. and used to love to watch a. jones to run all around the of. but i dont think bringing him back to atl is gonna help at all. it may actually hurt the braves. his free agent year it was obvious he had put on a bit of weight. i mean and it looks like he is still putting it on. i dont really right now would be the right time to take a risk on him. i say that wren needs to make a trade to bring in a bat. i've heard that wren has had some talks with the cards to get someone like ankiel. is there any truth to that?

for those disputing Kawakami on the basis of him not pitching a lot of innings last year, didn't he miss part of the season to play in the Olympics?

Nrmax88, I'm afraid Daniel Tosh's lawyers will be in touch with you for stealing his joke.

"But for rate stats, there is no reasonable alternative to using a projection model. Guesstimating, even relatively informed guesstimating, is never going to be more accurate than statistical analysis in that respect."
For the most part, nobody, I would agree. Especially for players who a fan is totally unfamiliar with.
However, if these projection systems are missing common sense factors, these are going to affect rate stats as well as innings and at bats. A player coming off of surgery, for example, is most likely going to have not just a decline in innings, but in rate stats as well.
So I still maintain that a reasonably informed and objective fan can come up with projections on certain players that are as accurate or more accurate than a projection system because the fan is taking more factors into account.
BTW, I am not saying projection systems are pure crap or useless. Not at all. But they have their limitations and when used, should be done so with a heavy grain of salt.

I dun know..To me Escobar and KJ are both more like 2nd spot hitter. (I have no prove to support my basis, just IMO)
I guess the history of Gile as leadoff hitter scarys me to my very deep soul and he was great in the 2nd spot!
I never know there's such a huge gap between 1st and 2nd in lineup.
I still remember I read a pre-season report on MLB.com stating Furcal OBP is never that good and Gile has a better number so there's nothing we need to worry. And you guys all know how story ended.
