Really Brewers? Really?

Have you learned nothing from throwing big dollars at old closers past their prime?

We do need a salary cap. One specifically designed to keep small market teams from spending 20% or more of their total payroll on bad investments.

A let me a a pre-emptive "ssh" to the overly serious people on here. Yes, I am aware that Gagne loves his roids whereas the Hoff has not been linked. And yes, I am aware that, while older, the Hoff's change up can keep him in the league longer.

Just dont hassle the Hoff, man.

This is hardly a bad investment, his numbers last year were outstanding as far as splits go. I'd bet he bounces back to mid-3's or high 3's which is worth 4M in this market easily.

Hey CubbyFan

Couldn't agree with you more, but that comment may look a little funny when it's closer to a $10M/yr figure.

Yeah lets have a salary cap that keeps small market teams from spending. Great Idea. I think the reason for the salary cap would be to allow the small market teams to spend

He's not getting anywhere near 10 per.

Hoffman is hardly a risk and it wont be 10 mil a year unless the yankees monopoly decides we cant have him and swoops in to offer 2 years 40 mil or something

If the deal is at 8M-9M a year, then the Brewers overpaid. My guess is it's in the 5.5M-6.5M range, possibly with an option, and that's a good deal for the Brewers, particularly since Hoffman fits a need and there's not much else out there in the FA market.

In fact, faced with a choice of overpaying Hoffman on a short-term deal of $8M versus going into the season with the likes of Jorge Julio and Seth McClung as your best closer options, I'd take the former, though I wouldn't be happy about it.

The Brewers are the right fit for the Hoff since he has demanded he will only sign with a team as a closer. The Brewers better start filling their other holes though...

He had 4M on the table (albeit from San Diego) and was considering accepting. I don't think anyone's going to almost triple that.

He'll get 5-6 I agree, with a vesting second. I don't see how that's overpaying given my original statement.

it's a done deal now, they faxed him a term sheet, and Furcal will tell you that those things are serious

Oh crap, a Term Sheet!! He's not represented by Wasserman is he?? LOL

Brewers might have one the Central if they had a real closer last year. Hope this works out better than Gagne's batting practice.

Why would Hoffman get 1/10 if Fuentes got 2/18?

Obviously Hoffman is going to settle for much less than $10M, although it's assuredly more than the $4M that San Diego offered.

He'll probably take like 1/5.5, with a club option.

It'll be a solid deal, Hoffman's a good pitcher and the commitment is short.

Term sheet? Great Ned will take a look and up the offer. He is going to be a Dodger then!

Hoffman should sign in LA and stay in the NL west for 1 year and then retire...Assuming the money is similar...

hey tim i got Sportscenter on and according to Buster its offical

As a Dodger fan, I say... Hooray!

I wasn't looking forward to a year of "Hell's Bells" being played and saves being blown.

Yeah Underdog, those 4 blown saves last year were just murderous.

Good signing. Low risk. Far better value than Wood or K-Rod.

Good to see the Brew crew dropping some dough.

ha lmao @ted williams comment

As long as this is under 6 or 7 mil, I like it on a one year deal. I would have been fine if my team brought in Hoff for one year. I am a little surprise Tampa Bay wasn't more involved though, he seemed like he would fit really well there.

Talk about overpaying. I know I wouldn't want him on my fantasy team, and especially not on a REAL team.

hoffman is not that good, he gets tagged in big spots. I was hoping the dodgers would get him cause it would be good for a couple giant's walk offs.

Oh, now I know why, it must have been because CJ Wilson is soooooo impressive that Texas never could use an arm like Hoffman.

Nice signing by the Brewers. Big time upgrade over what they had last season. Now they need to get someone to set Hoffman up.

I wonder what his numbers will look like going from an extreme pitchers park to a hitters park. Looking at what other closers are getting its certainly affordable, I think the money would have been better spent on a SP and a prospect close games. Almost every closer in the game broke in as a young SP that was moved to the closer role, why not give someone a chance whos making 500,000 instead of paying 5 million.

Don't let Colletti and the crummy codgers get that term sheet or they will screw the Brewers the way they did Atlanta concerning Furcal. I have absolutely no respect for that man or team after the despicable bs they pulled.

But im in no way saying its a move. I just dont believe he will be very good, but it was worth the risk for a team that has to compete.

Hoffman on a 1/6 deal is perfectly solid, and they get the option of retaining him for 2010 as well.

Because he's never been a power pitcher, he's still been able to succeed even though his stuff has declined. He depends most on his great change up, and as long as his fastball is good enough to clearly differentiate from his change, then he'll be a good reliever.

I'm not so sure he'll be a great closer anymore, but he's not going to blow up like Gagne did, and he won't be any worse than Soloman Torres.

Stagger, don't blame the Dodgers in entirety for the Furcal mess. That was due to him having two agents who didn't communicate well with each other or him. He'd said all along he wanted to give the Dodgers a final shot before he signed anything. The whole thing was blown out of proportion but was definitely poorly handled by his agents. If you want to see them as Snidely Whiplash with a twirly moustache be my guest though.

In this case they're not going to be pulling any last minute thing.

brewtown, no offense intended -- Hoffman will clearly be better than what they had or their current options, but the Dodgers have so many other options and other positions (another starter for one) that are a higher priority that giving all that money to a guy I consider on the downhill slope wouldn't make me happy. But he'll fill a need for the Brewers and be better than what they had.

But statistics aside I watched him a pitch a lot last season and can tell you he came close to having a lot more blown saves than he ended up with. His fastball is nothing. He's always had a great change so if that's still working he can be effective. Anyway, enjoy!

scribbletone- he's never been a power pitcher.

Hoffman was a power pitcher he came up throwing 95 when he first came up to the majors. He hurt his shoulder in the mid 90's and he fastball dip.

Do some research next time it makes you look stupid.

Miller park is a neutral park, not a hitters park.

The deal is fine, the team needed bullpen depth for sure and this will help with it.

Gagne had a 4.33 ERA, .760 OPS against and 0 ER in 24 0f 30 outings(1 ER in 3 of those so really just 3 bad outings) after his injury last year and the ERA was inflated by more HR than you'd expect given his flyballs.

His biggest problem last year was he was hurt. Some team will probably sign him cheap this year and get a bargain.

Seems like a million or 2 more than he should have received but still a solid signing. Hoffman will make for a nice upgrade.

Uhh but Hoffman never depended on pure power stuff in order to get guys out, like guys like A.J. Burnett do.

I know Hoffman used to throw mid 90's with a big curve, but that lasted like a season before he tore his rotator cuff.

He came back throwing 90-91 and added the change up to his arsenal in order to supplement it. The reason his change up is so dominant is because he throws it like a palmball, which helps to give it good movement, and obviously his arm action is excellent.

Okay so yeah, Hoffman was a power pitcher for 1.5 seasons back when I was two years old, but for the past 14 years the guy has been a changeup artist.

"but the Dodgers have so many other options and other positions (another starter for one) that are a higher priority that giving all that money to a guy I consider on the downhill slope"
-underdog8

what options are you talking about? needs yes, options?... colletti's blowing it so far. you guys are going to hit the panic button soon imo.

dog8,
What you write may be true. Nevertheless Colletti looked at the term sheet and knew exactly how much he needed to give Furcal, while holding on to every cent possible for other signings. No class, no integrity.

well this cant be any worst than gagne so thats good for the brewers fan.

haha this is a good sign for he brewers as he is an elder star on a team of young developing stars. he will help the pitchers through the tough times and alone this will sav the brewers atleast 5 more games with him unless than gange. good sign i applaude you milwaukee

another blown signing for Ned, who else is out there now?

You are the one who looks stupid in this instance. Really stupid.

Phew, at least he signed with Milwaukee instead of L.A.

Best of luck to Hoffy and us Padre fans appreciate everything he did for the organization. Since its a one year deal, maybe next year with the new ownership we'll sign him so he can finish off his career as a Padre. Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on how Bell does at the closing role.

Great, got the bad inverntory out of San Diego. I will give him credit for the best entrance in sports, however, when you can't through the fastball, the change-up isn't effective.

nrmax -You are the one who looks stupid in this instance. Really stupid.

He pointed out Hoffman was a power pitcher and the other poster agreed. So he back up what he is saying.

Now you sound like a idiot. Go back a take some remedial calsses you need them.

HA! Hoffman used to be hero in San Diego. He's a legend and will go down in history as one of the games best closers. However, there's a reason Padres fans aren't pissed off about their team giving him up: HES OLD AND PAST HIS PRIME! Even a rebuilding team in the midst of a virtual fire-sale doesn't want to keep him. The days of the Brewers being a threat in the NL central are over. They'll give St.Louis good competition for third place this season!

its a great career for Trevor Hoffman for the Padres!!! anyways does the brewers lose and padres get the brewers first round pick #27 and compensation or just a second round pick and compensation or just a compensation because he was a type A free agent?
