Brewers Not In On Lowe, Mulder

A couple of Brewers rumors were denied by GM Doug Melvin today.

First up, Ken Rosenthal's suggestion that the Brewers "are interested in Derek Lowe, but only at a modest price."  Melvin said, "We're not in on him."  Next, Nick Cafardo's rumor that the Brewers are "big on" Mark Mulder.  Melvin: "I really haven't contacted his guy."

MLB.com's Adam McCalvy says the Brewers are not particularly interested in Oliver Perez or Jon Garland, but could re-sign Ben Sheets.

It seems teams are not in on Lowe's price.

Mulder? They might as well resign Sheets over him.

I don't see why the Brewers would not bring back Sheets on a short term deal..Makes sense for both...

So they are not looking at Mulder. They are not looking at Lowe. They are not looking at Perez. They are not looking at Garland. They may try to resign Sheets because "We're looking at everything right now," Melvin said. Gotta love GM speak.

God. They're awfully picky, considering the "rotation" they currently have.

Sheets should have accepted arb...

Lowe + Brewers infield = bad idea.

Weeks, Fielder, and Hall are all bad defensively. Fielder is actually awful defensively.

Lowe is a hardcore groundballer.

Their rotation isnt awful asuming Gallardo comes back healthy. I do think they need one good starter in order to remain competative this year. I dont see resigning Sheets as the best plan as if he leaves the Brewers net 2 draft picks. I would have liked to get Looper or maybe Wolf, but if a signing like that doesnt happen, worst case scenario, the Brewers can try to ride out the first half and use their prospects to get a better starter at the deadline. They should sign a closer though and Hoffman makes a lot of sense for them.

Bad idea for Lowe, sure, but not for the Brewers. GBs are always preferable to FBs, even with bad infield defense. (see also: Wang, Chien-Ming)

Thank God. Last time they weren't "picky" they signed that stiff Suppan for $40m.

I'd rather have 5 rookie starters than John Garland on a 4 year deal (or even a 3 year deal).

Lowe would be ok at the right price, but he's already got a higher offer than I'd be comfortable with.

I'd offer Sheets a 1 year deal with incentives, or maybe a 2 year deal. He's by far the best pitcher left, and seems to be a lot healthier when pitching for a contract. It amazes me that no one has really made an offer to him yet.

So what are the Brewers trying to do? Isn't there a risk that they'll be too passive and lose the window they have now with their good young position players (Fielder, Braun, Hart, Hardy)?

Hall is above average defensively and Weeks was pretty close to average last year, I doubt it is a problem.

The rotation of Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan, Insert guy is probably above average. They are just low on IP.

Gallardo projects as a #1 or #2, Parra as a #2 or #3 and Bush and Suppan are both #4 types. They just really need more innings than anything else. Add Sheets to that mix and they have a good rotation.

Parra as a #2? That's a little optimistic, no? Is Sean Marshall a 2 or 3?

Who would want Mulder unless they got a discount? The guy hasn't done anything in 3 years. These guys are getting way too much money if you ask me, I'm just curious how much he's gonna get.

Sorry I was talking longer term. Parra struck out 1 per IP and BB only 3.3 per 9 in the second half and had a 55% GB rate. He has flashed elite peripherals and is considered a very high upside pitcher who was slow to make the majors because of injuries.

I would expect an ERA hovering a little under 4 for this year and more improvement the next.

Gallardo is a stud who just needs more time to prove it. He has been nothing but fabulous so far outside of that 1 game in coors.

Oliver Perez kills the Brewers. He's probably cheaper than Sheets or Lowe, too. Maybe not though. Lowe and Perez are both Boras clients.
