« Derek Lowe Rumors: Friday | Main | Levine On Young, Dye, Poreda, Peavy, Heilman »
A week ago, John Perrotto mentioned Tony La Russa was considering using Chris Carpenter as a closer. Today, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports Cardinals GM John Mozeliak is comfortable turning toward internal options to fill the closer role.
Chris Perez and Jason Motte, as well as Ryan Franklin are listed as most likely options. Franklin had 17 saves last season for St. Louis. Leach mentions the Cardinals could attempt to work out a deal for Brandon Lyon or Juan Cruz, as well as the possibility of signing free agent Chad Cordero, to add depth and expand their options in the ninth inning. Interest in Cordero is more curiosity than anything, says Leach.
What about Carpenter? Said Mozeliak, "The right-hander will only pitch out of the bullpen if there is a compelling medical reason to use him there rather than in the rotation." Tony La Russa expressed similar sentiments on Monday, according to Leach, despite Perrotto's report last week.
Returning Adam Wainwright to the closer role has not been discussed.

How about we give them our closer for Wainwright back?...lol
Posted by: Cobrasnake | January 09, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Give the ball to Perez in the 9th and let Motte/Franklin set up......Franklin is horrible in the closer spot but not as bad if he's used in the 7th or 8th inning......and Cobrasnake, Wainwright isn't going anywhere :)
Posted by: CardinalFaninIL | January 09, 2009 at 10:35 PM
Kind of figured that but hey it was worth a shot...lol
I wish the Braves would have said that same thing about him not going anywhere a few years back :)
Atleast it looks like where actually going to keep Hanson.
Posted by: Cobrasnake | January 09, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Why not Chris Perez as closer? Give him a shot before obeying LaRussa's "Proven Closer" mantra.
Posted by: Chris W. | January 09, 2009 at 10:57 PM
Honestly, which closers are available via free agency or trade? K-Rod, Putz, Wood, and Hoffman are all off the market. Chad Cordero? Please. He'll make an nice upside play for someone, but I think he's far from a sure thing for 2009. The Cards best bet is to go in-house, whether it's Chris Perez, as I suggested before, or not.

Their guy was Fuentes and they lost him forf being cheap, b/c he didn't sign for much.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 09, 2009 at 11:24 PM
DominicanYanks, no they lost him because he wanted to play for Los Angeles. You can't blame them Fuentes wanting to be an Angel no matter what.
The Cardinals are not cheap, they just don't make stupid moves to make messageboard fans content during the offseason you know. The payroll is over 100 million you know...that's not exactly cheap; and they are a competitive team every year so you can't complain when the season hasn't even started yet.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 09, 2009 at 11:30 PM
Ok, Where is all that money invested b/c they have only one big name player which is Pujols and he only made around 13m +. ??
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 09, 2009 at 11:34 PM
Fuentes ended up being a very good deal for LAA, but I think Perez could put up a comparable pitching line at the minimum salary in 2009.
Posted by: Chris W. | January 09, 2009 at 11:43 PM
WOW.. i must say, im a bit blown away by reading this.. i personally watched ryan franklin blow about 10-15 saves this last year, i guess mozeliak and tony did'nt catch those games.
Posted by: AndrewBeavs | January 09, 2009 at 11:46 PM
DominicanYanks, you have no idea what you're talking about -- the Cardinals offered Fuentes more money than the Angels and he still went to LA.
As for where the money is invested...unfortunately, a lot of it is invested in Chris Carpenter.
Posted by: mojowo11 | January 09, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Glaus will make 11.25MM in 2009, Carpenter 14MM, Pinero 7.5MM, Loshe 7.125...I know where you're coming from, Dominican, but I don't think it's fair to call the organization cheap (not as long as they play in the same league as the Nationals and Pirates).
Posted by: Chris W. | January 09, 2009 at 11:50 PM
The Cardinals are certainly a cheap organization now, perhaps they were not in the past, but as a St. Louis'an, they are now.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | January 09, 2009 at 11:57 PM
I'm going to admit I didn't know that the Cardinals offered more money. Its just the way I view the team b/c of the players they get.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 09, 2009 at 11:57 PM
not really upset about this... but now what they need to do is trade an outfielder away and attempt to get some starting pitching. the twins have young pitching...
Posted by: MVPujols | January 10, 2009 at 12:08 AM
Luckily the Cardinals are rebuilding right now. But fans like Dominican cry when a player like Aaron Miles is let go to make way for someone like Brian Barden. The Cardinals are rebuilding around Wainwright, Pujols, Molina, and now Rasmus.
Fans cry no matter what. Either the team isn't spending enough on overpaid free agents or they are spending too much and need to rebuild. The Cardinals are doing neither and are going to be competitive.
My whole point is stop complaining during the winter. When it's mid July, then you can complain about the team. Right now, you have no idea what is going to happen. The season isn't played in January nor is it played on paper.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 10, 2009 at 12:41 AM
I totally agree with you mtzx, i just was a bit taken back when i seen Ryan Franklin's name as a potential closer.
Posted by: AndrewBeavs | January 10, 2009 at 12:50 AM
mtzxc are you OK? I'm not a Cardinals fan, its pretty obvious looking a my name. What am I crying about?
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 10, 2009 at 01:00 AM
How's about having Carpenter go as a 2-3 inning closer.
Posted by: coryjwilson | January 10, 2009 at 01:08 AM
DominicanYanks, you yourself may not be crying, but I have seen so many fans whine about loosing Miles and not signing Fuentes that it's literally driving me crazy.
I posted that because of your claim that they were cheap...when in fact they aren't. They have multiyear deals with Pujols, Wainwright, Lohse, Molina, Carpenter, and large salaries in player such as Glaus, Greene, Kennedy, Piniero, and depending on arbitration possible Ludwick and Ankiel. Add on the cheap young talent of Perez, Motte, and the rest of the young players (Rasmus) and you don't have a cheap team. You just don't have a team that overpays for the large FA.
AndreBeavs: I believe TLR and DD are the ones who think of Franklin as a closing option. I'm pretty sure Mo is set on Perez in the 9th with Motte being the set up man.
For those who think the Cardinals are closer to rebuilding than winning the division...the bullpen was full of crappy options for Tony to rely on. Now that guys like Izzy, Villone, and Kelvin Jiminez are gone...it's already a huge improvement. Ryan Franklin should not get anywhere near the 8th or 9th innings. Period.

"How's about having Carpenter go as a 2-3 inning closer"
Now that's confindence your bullpen! I'm sure that would do wonders for a guy coming off a nerve damage injury too. I've never heard of 1 man being the entire back end of a bellpen. Good luck with that.

**bullpen
Posted by: pubertaljols | January 10, 2009 at 03:46 AM
"The Cardinals are rebuilding around Wainwright, Pujols, Molina, and now Rasmus."
Shouldn't Rasmus show he can play in the majors before you build a team around him? It's like saying the Cubs (3 years ago) are building the team around Ramirez, BigZ, and Felix Pie. I'm just saying....
Posted by: pubertaljols | January 10, 2009 at 03:53 AM
"Glaus will make 11.25MM in 2009, Carpenter 14MM, Pinero 7.5MM, Loshe 7.125..."
Somebody please explain to me why piniero is making 7.5 million next year. Talk about a huge waste of money. Mozeliak needs to take a huge piniero dump, and soon!
Posted by: pubertaljols | January 10, 2009 at 04:04 AM
Pujertaljols, have you ever heard of John Smoltz. That is why the Braves fans are crying. So worry about Kamikana and Peavy, that they let one of their own go. Sound like something like Miles except that the Red Sox did not overpay for Smotlz.
Posted by: Knuffy | January 10, 2009 at 09:00 AM
2009 Payroll:
Pujols $16m
Carpenter $14m
Glaus $11.25m
Pineiro $7.5m
Lohse $7.125m
Green $6.5m
Kennedy $4m
Molina $3.25m
Wainwright $2.6m
Franklin $2.5m
comes to $74.725m, with the rest of the cheaper contracts its over $90m. Add another $7-9m for arbitration raises for Ludwick, Ankiel and Wellemeyer.
Leaves enough for a starting pitcher and payroll will end up at about $110m. Or a second basemen... with the pitcher coming through trade. Trading Ankiel for a starter would be optimal.
Posted by: adieuordie | January 10, 2009 at 12:53 PM
"and large salaries in player such as Glaus, Greene, Kennedy, Piniero" Huge waste of money
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 10, 2009 at 01:07 PM
Glaus and Greene wont be a waste, but i think Kennedy and Piniero are not the best ideas, but surely not a waste.
Posted by: Craig | January 11, 2009 at 03:56 AM
The plus side is, the Cards should easily be the best major league team, at least the best team from Missouri that is!
Posted by: jamalhornsby | January 11, 2009 at 04:40 PM
why not trade ankiel for a starter, then go spend the 10 mil on orlando hudson..there would be no holes in the team other than the 4/5 spots in the rotation being occupied by piniero/wellemeyer, and wellemeyer has shown he can pitch well at times.
the line up would read
schumacher
hudson
ludwick
pujols
glaus
rasmus
yadi
greene
pitcher
rotation
carp
wainwright
a solid 3 guy in compensation for ankiel
wellemeyer
piniero/brad thompson
bullpen
perez 9th
motte 8th
with a matchup based 7th
or am i missing something as to why they would not want to do this
what are we rebuilding for, it can't get much better than having the best player in baseball, not to mention adam wainwright in the rotation
thoughts?

"What are you rebuilding for?" I guess that's a good question if you consider third place a success. The Cards did manage to beat the Astros,Reds, and Pirates, quite a feat! I will concede that Pujols may be the best player in baseball. I just wonder when he's going to go to a team that is worthy of his talents.
Posted by: jamalhornsby | January 11, 2009 at 07:27 PM
P.S. The Yankees seem to think they have the best player in baseball too (A.Rod) and they finished third too! Hows that for irony?

For 1. cardcrazy u forgot Lohse and i dont see Carp in the starting rotation. I dont know where I see him to be honest. 2. I believe the cardinals where fourth place behind the Astros by a half a game. I dont like not having a real closer, where not getting anymore middle infielders, and another starter is a must. N
Posted by: diehardcard | January 11, 2009 at 07:45 PM
I don't see a lot of the NL teams but why didn't the Cardinals go after Takashi Saito?
I see a lot of the MLB commentators praising the Red Sox for making a steal but was this guy not an option for the Cards?
