Tim, are you sure you got your grammar correct in the last item? I would think most people would want $5 FROM Adam Kennedy to take his autograph.

Why are these guys charging for autographs? Don't they get paid enough money even with the millions they are paid? Even if you're a guy making the league min of $400k you should be living pretty comfortably.

^ got that right.
Mo, trade Ludwick alread. No way he'll have another year like last and we might as well get top dollar.

anyone know if there has been any further talks of Ludwick/Ainkel to the Braves

Winter Warm Up was a fundraiser for the Cardinals Care charity. The players made absolutely nothing for participating, all proceeds went straight to the foundation.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 18, 2009 at 08:11 PM
Hopefully that autograph money goes to charity.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 18, 2009 at 08:11 PM
Oh, and I scored some good autographs myself: Brett Wallace, David Freese, Rasmus, Jess Todd, Bryan Anderson...all of these guys were free.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 18, 2009 at 08:13 PM
I doubt the Braves will rekindle talks with the Cardinals, as they were asking for Mike Gonzalez
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 08:20 PM
BravesFan, I was always under the impression that they had asked for KJ and a prospect. I'd part with Soriano, but not Gonzalez. I really hope the Braves do score a good bat, I love what they've done with the rotation, but I'm still a little leary of the offense.

how about a ludwick + ankiel + prospects to san diego for peavy.
sounds good to me.

"how about a ludwick + ankiel + prospects to san diego for peavy.

I hope you're kidding, lol.
Wainright+Rasmus would probably get it done ;-)
Posted by: V | January 18, 2009 at 09:11 PM
If Escobar + Hernandez+ Morton + Locke woudlnt get it done, I doubt that either of those packages would get it done either /end sarcasm
Posted by: FlaBravesFan | January 18, 2009 at 09:12 PM
stlbaseball: The Pads don't want an expensive OF who will be a free agent next season so Ankiel is out. Ludwick might be a good piece, but San Diego would want someone like Rasmus for sure.
You would have to start with Rasmus or Wainwright and then go from there.
Also, Peavy doesn't make much sense for the Cards. He makes roughly the same ammount as Carpenter does and is signed long term. The last thing this team needs is another long term contract for a pitcher. We already have Carpenter, Wainwright, and Lohse signed to 4+ years.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 18, 2009 at 09:13 PM
What is wrong with Gonzo for Ludwick?
Gonzo can be pretty good when healthy, but he's just a closer and he's pitched sparingly in the past 3 seasons. I'd think a middle of the order bat is much more valuable.
Posted by: bigpat | January 18, 2009 at 09:15 PM
The Cards wanted Gonzo for Ankiel...or Kelly Johnson for Ludwick. Not Gonzo for Ludwick.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 18, 2009 at 09:17 PM
FlaBravesFan,
I meant to say the Cards wanted Gonzo for Ankiel and ur right they wanted KJ and a prospect, probably Todd Redmond or Gorkys Hernandez
I agree that i would not give up Gonzo, especially for probably a one year rental in Ankiel, so i'd rather deal Soriano, but he probably doesn't have any value, So i'd take my chance on Swisher/Dunn
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 09:18 PM
I still think a KJ/prospect for Ankiel of Ludwick makes the most sense. It fills a need for both teams. If the cards want pitching instead, they could have Reyes or Morton/prospect. WE NEED A BAT
Posted by: FlaBravesFan | January 18, 2009 at 09:19 PM
I would not trade wainwright for peavy straight up.. waino is younger and has way better stuff.. sounds like another haren/mulder trade.
Posted by: AndrewBeavs | January 18, 2009 at 09:23 PM
I think the Braves still rue the day they traded him for JD Drew, I mean, JD put up nice numbers in ATL for his one year here, but Wainwright would look really nice in the Braves rotation right about now...or bullpen for that matter.

Kelly Johnson, Jo-Jo Reyes, Blaine Boyer for Ryan Ludwick and Joe Mather?
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 09:27 PM
I wish we still had JD.
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 09:29 PM
"I wish we still had JD."
I wish we still had Polanco and Haren. But trades and free agency happen...
Posted by: mtzxc | January 18, 2009 at 09:37 PM
Heck, i wish we still had Gary Sheffield
*everyone puts down beer and stares at me like im stupid*
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 09:41 PM
That 2003 season, Sheff was a beast.
Posted by: mtzxc | January 18, 2009 at 09:48 PM
Bravesfan, I do not think STL is going to give up Mather. They are loaded with left side bats from the outfield and they need a right hander out there. What the Cardinals want from the Braves, the Braves can not offer. A good starter that can go into the rotation right now. Jojo is ok, but he is no Hughes or Chamberlain.
Posted by: Knuffy | January 18, 2009 at 10:06 PM
Charlie Morton?
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 10:13 PM
I do wonder why an Ankiel for Kennedy/Hughes hasn't happened yet. Yanks need a CFer that can hit and the Cards need a MLB ready cheap and maybe pretty good starter.
Posted by: bbxxj | January 18, 2009 at 10:32 PM
To the guy that said Gonzo for Ludwick: you're clinically. Giving up a guy that hit .300 with 30+ hr and 100+ rbi for an oft-injured mediocre closer is crazy
Posted by: catch212 | January 18, 2009 at 10:34 PM
Good to hear the money from the autographs goes to charity.
Posted by: Jeff Levy | January 18, 2009 at 10:37 PM
Some of you people need to understand that teams trade contracts for players, not just players.
Ludwick and Ankiel aren't interchangeable. One of these players is much more valuable than the other, and it would be stupid to trade him for a reliever that will be a free agent after next year.
Posted by: plh903 | January 18, 2009 at 10:44 PM
Man, I remember 'Wick coming up with the Tribe. He couldn't stay healthy, the organization liked him a lot, but he just looked like any other 'dude' out there. Never dreamed he'd put together a season like that and become so highly regarded in trade talks. Props to Luddy, funny game of baseball.
Posted by: Furrski | January 18, 2009 at 10:45 PM
catch212 - Ludwick hit 30 HR in one season, just as Gonzalez was significantly injured in 1 season, with TJ surgery.
If anyone should be labeled "oft injured" in the discussion, it's Ludwick.
That said, I do think Ludwick for Gonzo would favor Atlanta a bit.
Posted by: Baleen | January 18, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Might as well hold on to Ludwick given the market for corner OF - if guys like Dunn and Abreu are still out there, are you really going to get top dollar for Ludwick?
Posted by: Chris W. | January 18, 2009 at 11:29 PM
Wainwright has "much better stuff" than Peavy?? I think Wainwright is going to be a stud one day, but come on.
Posted by: chicubs25 | January 18, 2009 at 11:43 PM
Yeah, Ludwick would be too much to pay for either gonzo or KJ. ATL would have had to throw in a top prospect to make one of those deals even. Luddy for escobar would have been "fair", tilted slightly to ATL, or schumaker/ankiel + prospect for KJ.
Anything else and the braves front office were being greedy (a la padres, and what they were asking for peavy).
Posted by: SleepyCA | January 18, 2009 at 11:49 PM
Peavy's stuff is better than Wainwright. Wainwright is 27 years old - there is no "one day;" what you're seeing now is probably his prime. He's a terrific pitcher in his own right, but Peavy is better.

"Cards suck. Another 2nd-3rd place finish!"
Yeah... and they haven't won the World Series since 2006.

"Luddy for escobar would have been "fair", tilted slightly to ATL"
There is no way I would even consider trading Escobar for Ludwick.
Ludwick is coming off a career year and is alot older than Escobar.
The Fielding Bible has Escobar as the 2nd best fielding SS in the majors last season.
Plus I'm not sure when Ludwick will be eligible to become a FA but I know it's before Escobar will and I believe probably atleast 2 years before him but I'm not 100% sure on that off hand.
The only reason Escobar was in the Peavy talks was because that was for an elite pitcher.
Posted by: Cobrasnake | January 19, 2009 at 01:18 AM
Ludwick for Escobar would be fair in terms of there overall production last year and what you can expect going into the future. Also they both have similar contract situations.
I am a cards fan and i would be ecstatic to see us get Escobar, who is a great fielding and good OPB shortstop. We have an excellent amount of OF depth in Rasmus, dunacn, MAther, ankiel, schumacher, barton and some more good prospects in AA and AAA; so i wouldn't mind trading Luddy.
Posted by: fortyniner | January 19, 2009 at 02:25 AM
Escobar is not getting traded for a LF. Escobar's value is getting that this position than Ludwick as an OF that just put up good # once in his career.
Morton/JoJo + Gorkys + Soriano = Ludwick + Perez + Todd
Posted by: BravoFan3736 | January 19, 2009 at 04:03 AM
Wow, you don't need the username to know that you're a Braves fan.
Posted by: plh903 | January 19, 2009 at 04:23 AM
I left out KJ
KJ + Morton/JoJo + Soriano + Gorys = Ludwick + Perez + Todd/Motte
Posted by: BravoFan3736 | January 19, 2009 at 04:27 AM
Bravesfan, The Cardinals are diffentley not trading Chris Perez, Jason Motte or Jess Todd. Why should the Cardinals trade 2 of their top relief pitchers in the future of a starter that is not all that good and a 2nd baseman who they already got a 2nd baseman.
Posted by: Knuffy | January 19, 2009 at 06:28 AM
Hey Jeff and Eric, they charge for autographs because all proceeds from the Winter Warm-up go to Cardinals Care. Thats a community organization that helps kids, you should look into it before making dumb comments...

"Luddy for escobar would have been "fair", tilted slightly to ATL, or schumaker/ankiel + prospect for KJ."
Uhh, f-ck no.
Really good defensive SS with solid bat under control for 5 years >>>>>> good corner OF under control for 3 years.
Bad defensive 2B with good bat under control for 3 years >> bad defensive OF with good bat under control for 1 year + 4th OF type.

"I would not trade wainwright for peavy straight up.. waino is younger and has way better stuff.. sounds like another haren/mulder trade."
The two trades are not even close.
Haren was younger and much more unproven than Wainwright when traded (24). And, Barton also had (and still has) plenty of value at the time, albeit a prospect still in rookie ball.
Mulder was also two years away from free agency, as opposed to Peavy, who's under control for 4-5 more years. And Mulder had more injury problems before the trade than Peavy.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 19, 2009 at 08:07 AM
I would like to have Ludwick on my team only for KJ + a prospect and not extended into a larger deal
With the prospect being Gregor Blanco or Todd Redmond
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 19, 2009 at 08:15 AM
It doesn't matter. Bottom line is the Cardinals line-up is set. They would trade an outfielder for pitching only.
Posted by: catch212 | January 19, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Are any of the Cards outfirlders out of options? might make a difference in who they trade and for what?
Braves have a couple relievers out of options, they could use to try and work out a trade?
GO BRAVOS...
Posted by: ColoradoBravesFan | January 19, 2009 at 12:11 PM
I still say to bad the Cardinals didn't get a chance to trade for Nate McClouth ,he would have given Pujols protection and add some speed as well.
Can't forget that glove of his the Braves made a good deal, now Card will have to keep looking for another bat.
