« Dodgers Intensify Talks With Wolf, Garland, Looper | Main | Mets Willing To Go Four Years For Oliver Perez? »
MLB.com's Mark Bowman talked with Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who is entering the final year of his contract. Jones would like a three-year extension, but hasn't had any talks with the Braves this winter. He'd prefer not to negotiate during the season.
Jones, 37 in April, hit a massive .364/.470/.574 in 534 plate appearances last year. His defense came out above average in the plus/minus system. FanGraphs placed a phenomenal value on Jones' season: $34.4MM.

He's my favorite player of all time, but I'm nervous about what the Braves FO thinks about his long term future. After we fall 15 games out by June next season and the trade rumors start swirling I'll probably just stick my head in the oven.
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | January 23, 2009 at 03:51 PM
Glad to hear this. This was really the only reason I got mad at Wren for not signing smoltz, since it made Chip mad.
hearing that he wants to come back is good to hear
Posted by: BravesFan101 | January 23, 2009 at 03:52 PM
Chipper is just unbelievably good. As a white sox fan, I hope we can get someone even half as good and consistant has chip.
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | January 23, 2009 at 03:53 PM
I really don't think we gonna be that far behind barring injuries. It goin to be a good season if you ask me
Posted by: BravesFan101 | January 23, 2009 at 03:54 PM
Braves need to get this done before ST. Chipper is one of the 3 or 4 best hitters in the game. He's missed time, but it's not like he's got some chronic injury that is likely to get worse... it's always been an oblique pull here, a groin pull there... no reason to doubt he can play 3 more years.
Posted by: AtlantaMike | January 23, 2009 at 03:56 PM
Then sign the man already. Heck give him the key to the city if you have to.
Posted by: zephyr8 | January 23, 2009 at 03:57 PM
"Heck give him the key to the city if you have to."
Haha agreed. Key to the city, lifetime supply of Chick Fillet ,whatever it takes.
A perfect finish to the Braves offseason would look like this to me:
1.Sign Chipper Jones to a 3 year extention.
2.Resign Will Ohman
3.Trade for Xavier Nady or Nick Swisher
4.Sign Andruw(minor or major league contract) and let him compete for CF.
Posted by: BravoMan | January 23, 2009 at 04:05 PM
Not to be cynical, but I wonder if Smoltz said the same thing last year.
I have never been a Braves fan, but I can still admire a player like Chipper. He is one of the greatest hitters of this generation and seems like a great guy. Not to mention his defense! Probably the greatest switch hitter of all time. Good luck Braves fans. If you change your mind Chipper I'm sure we can find a spot for you in LA!
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | January 23, 2009 at 04:05 PM
This is definitely good to hear, considering how unhappy Chipper was immediately following Smoltz's departure. Get this done Frank! If you thought the backlash of letting Smoltz go was bad, you will be chased out of town by an angry mob if Chipper is allowed to walk.

"Probably the greatest switch hitter of all time."
Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray might want a word with you.
Posted by: AA | January 23, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Chipper has already taken a pay cut to play for the Braves. He's a franchise player. Please give him an extension. It's true: he's oen of the best hitters in the game.
Posted by: drphonic7 | January 23, 2009 at 04:13 PM
andruw jones is a bum no need for any team to sign him.
Posted by: beastOftheEast | January 23, 2009 at 04:14 PM
Chipper's getting old,I think not taking a risk on John and we shouldnt take a risk on Tommy,The brave were right with cuting ties with Dale Murphy back in the day,and the fans wre truely upset with that move years ago,We have to be well aware that ball players get old and some dont want to retire, they think they can play well into there 40s. The Braves need to do what will improve this team.Chipper will be known for being one of the best hitters in baseball and will be one of the best Brave's to ever wear the uniform, sorry we need to move on just like we did with John
Posted by: Raymond | January 23, 2009 at 04:19 PM
Sign Chipper. The dude is more productive in 124 games than most are in 162.
Posted by: MoBrave | January 23, 2009 at 04:20 PM
Raymond, so a guy wins a batting title, and finishes 2nd in MLB in OPS, and you're ready to dump him?
Okay.
Posted by: AtlantaMike | January 23, 2009 at 04:22 PM
"Probably the greatest switch hitter of all time."
Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray might want a word with you.
Posted by: AA | January 23, 2009 at 04:08 PM
Chipper has them both in average and has Murray in OBP and SLG. He has a chance to at least make it close to both of them as far as HR and will never never get close to their SO totals.
Add all this up and I think he makes a legit case for best switch hitter of all time. If you just want a hit out of those three, Chipper is the most likely to do that.
Posted by: SoleMaverick | January 23, 2009 at 04:31 PM
"The Braves need to do what will improve this team"
And letting Chipper Jones go will improve the Braves? Please shut up.
Posted by: homeofdabrave | January 23, 2009 at 04:32 PM
Raymond - Yeah I can't agree with you there. He is getting older, but check out his BAs the last 3 years....324,.337,.364. He doesn't have the power that he used to, but he's as good a hitter if not better than he's ever been. 2nd best hitter in baseball behind Pujols in my book.
Posted by: paulyicecubes | January 23, 2009 at 04:33 PM
Larry is a great hitter and teammate. Any team would love to have him. The Braves would be crazy not to keep him.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | January 23, 2009 at 04:34 PM
Raymond he just won a batting title... plus we have no one to replace him as of yet. true we could get one thru trade, or free agency but there is a problem with that. we will have to give something up for that 3b from trade and we don't know if a team will be looking to unload one for what we willing to give up
and here is the 3b free agent list for 10
Adrian Beltre (31)
Geoff Blum (37)
Aaron Boone (37)
Pedro Feliz (35) - $5MM club option with a $500K buyout
Chone Figgins (32)
Troy Glaus (33)
Chipper Jones (38)
Mike Lamb (34)
Melvin Mora (38) - $8MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Pablo Ozuna (35)
Robb Quinlan (33)
now they all only a few years younger than chip beltre being the youngest at 31. now how much will we have to pay for one of these guys? personally I think I'd take Chipper over most names on here. just my opinion.
Posted by: BravesFan101 | January 23, 2009 at 04:37 PM
Chipper has to be signed. He has been one of the many popular and LOYAL faces to this team.Wren has already slapped one hall of famer in the face. Please don't do the same with Chipper! As for you AJ bashers, you will be the first one's to complain when he wins come back player of the year for another team.He is probably the safest and CHEAPEST bet the braves can gamble on.
Posted by: sb5676 | January 23, 2009 at 04:39 PM
As far as switch hitters go I didn't look up the stats just going off my opinion and memory (which I know are not considered reliable sources). Maybe should have said "arguably the greatest switch hitter of all time."
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | January 23, 2009 at 04:40 PM
personally I think I'd take Chipper over most names on here.
Who would you not take Chipper over?
Mora?
Figgins?
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 23, 2009 at 04:44 PM
cutme... yeah, Chipper's in the conversation for best SH of all time. I really don't think his numbers will ever overtake the Mick. I do think he's got the potential to be considered "better" than Murray, but there are a lot of ways to decide that, so who knows?
But as a switch-hitter and a third-baseman... pretty amazing what he's done already, and where his career numbers might end up.
Posted by: AtlantaMike | January 23, 2009 at 04:47 PM
Yeah Chipper is without a doubt one of the best switch hitters of all time and should be a first ballot hall of famer. But 3 years is a long time for someone who is only going to play 140 games or less. How old is Chipper? I can't remember. I could see 2 years with an option for a 3rd. I think what the Braves are looking at is if they are not contenders at the trade deadline, then do you shop Chipper? Because by that point you would know you are in serious rebuilding mode. I still think this guy should retire a Brave though....it just seems right.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he doesn't have the power he used to. His last three SLG totals have been .596, .604, .574...the only two times he's done better than that are when he won the MVP back in 1999 and in 2001 when he arguably should have won the MVP. The fact that he put up his highest OPS+ ever last season at the age of 37 is just one of many reasons why I would be willing to...well, I'll stop myself there. I do agree with you that he's the 2nd best hitter in baseball behind Pujols.
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | January 23, 2009 at 04:54 PM
no I'd prefer chip over them all.
I guess I should of said there were few I'd accept as a replacement. (assuming if wren let him go he would target one of these guys)
Figgins is one I'd hope we'd target if we lost chip but I hope we don't
Posted by: BravesFan101 | January 23, 2009 at 05:00 PM
give him 3/40 extension. then next year, they should trade kotchman or move him to the bench, move chipper to first and bring in adrian beltre (great glove, so-so streaky bat, some speed). that move to first could also let him play an extra 2-3 years, so if he moved now he might get 5 more solid years in.
Posted by: dudeman | January 23, 2009 at 05:12 PM
"Chipper has them both in average and has Murray in OBP and SLG. He has a chance to at least make it close to both of them as far as HR and will never never get close to their SO totals."
Don't get me wrong, I think Larry is a great player, but there is no way he is better than the Mick. I mean, the guy put up a .705! SLG and followed up the next year with a .512 OBP. Meanwhile, steady Eddie is in the 3000/500/500 club, not exactly easy to do and I don't see Larry getting to 3000.
Posted by: AA | January 23, 2009 at 05:17 PM
Mickey also did that when the league average slugging was like .393
Chipper is arguably the 2nd best switcher hitter of all time (hard to say right now as the last few years of Murray's career hurt his overall avg/obp/slg) but there is no argument over THE best, it's Mantle, hands down.
Posted by: richphillies | January 23, 2009 at 05:38 PM
Whatever happens to all the talk that FW is working on an extension for Chipper or did I just imagined all that?
Although I would have thought that it's much more likely to see Chipper in a different uniform than Smoltz, I'm still holding out hope that an extension gets done.
Posted by: ABravesFan | January 23, 2009 at 05:49 PM
Agree with the post suggesting the switch to first. That being said we do have an excellent prospect in Freddie Freeman, who by the way had better numbers than Heyward. I love Chipper and the free agent third baseman market will be slim, but can the Braves with this glut of talent coming up give that kind of money for 100-130 games.
Posted by: OklahomaBrave | January 23, 2009 at 06:07 PM
Beltre does not excite me in any way!!
Posted by: OklahomaBrave | January 23, 2009 at 06:08 PM

Chipper's said several times that playing 1B would be harder on his legs/feet than playing the hot corner.
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | January 23, 2009 at 06:12 PM
come on wren, dont get rid of chip, sign him to an extension, he's my friggin wallpaper for my computer for christ sakes, dont do this to me
Posted by: tntnhhs | January 23, 2009 at 06:28 PM
just saying ,there's life after Chipper, yea your right there is nobody to replace him, because we keep trading the farm to get other allstar players that wont stay,Tex,Sheff etc.........
Posted by: Raymond | January 23, 2009 at 06:52 PM
Sheffield was traded for Brian Jordan, Odalis Perez and Andrew Brown...
Not exactly trading away the farm, plus the Braves got two excellent years out of Sheffield.
Posted by: Clint C | January 23, 2009 at 09:53 PM
I mean yea we have a few guys in the minors with power that could replace chipper if they continue to develop Eric Campbell is solid and Brandon Hicks can move to 3rd since he is blocked by Escobar.
Even still though i would love to have Chipper for a few more years. just give the guy a 3 year contract. to make the best out of the investment just make them all incentive based.
something like 7mil base salary with another 8 mil in incentives based on games started/plate appearances/ days on the active roster etc.
and as far as his power numbers go the guy has power he just doesnt use it. he already talked about how he used to swing for the fence on every pitch kinda like an adam dunn and he started hitting to the gaps more just to be a better all around hitter. if he wanted to he could still knock some out of the park but its not needed with the addition of a true cleanup hitter his 20+HR's a year are just perfect.
Posted by: drumzalicious | January 23, 2009 at 09:54 PM
Chippers situation isn't the same as Dale Murphy's. First of all, Chipper is still one of the best players in the game. His performance isn't diminishing like Murph's did. Secondly, Chipper isn't blocking anyone in the organization worth mentioning. It's not like there's another Justice knocking on the 3B door in Atlanta and we having a star with diminishing value blocking the good young talent.
The Braves should make every effort to sign Chipper to an extension. There's really no good reason not to.
Posted by: When In Rome | January 23, 2009 at 10:03 PM
This topic compelled me to post for the first time on this site.
Frank Wren really needs to get this done soon(resigning Chipper). For all of the reasons stated above, no replacement in minors(or free agency for that matter), he's had some of his best seasons recently and last but not least it would be a crime not to give him the opportunity to retire a Brave.
Sentimentality aside, this really needs to get done...
Posted by: HawaiianBrave | January 24, 2009 at 03:54 AM
BravesFan101, Chipper is only 36...
Posted by: Jacob Dailey | January 24, 2009 at 11:16 AM
that is the ages of the players after this season. in april he is 37.
Posted by: BravesFan101 | January 24, 2009 at 01:00 PM
The thing I like about Chipper is that as he has matured he seems to be adapting his style of play. He used to be a 35-40 HR/20 SB guy. Now he's more of a 20 HR/5 SB guy but his AVG and OBP have been increasing.
Posted by: Jesse Jack | January 24, 2009 at 01:16 PM
You've heard it first. If the Braves trade Chipper or don't resign him, I will NEVER watch another Braves game again. In fact, I will NEVER cheer for the Braves again. The way that fucktard Frank Wren is, I won't be a Bravesfan for long!
Posted by: Braves Fan2020 | January 25, 2009 at 07:00 AM
It doesn't matter what age Chipper is at this point. He has increased all his batting averages in the past 3 years. He is without a doubt the best hitter on the Braves tean. At a time when we need hitters, why on earth are the Braves GM's even considering not signing him. That is so freaking stupid. They are gonna mess around and piss him off and then he will leave. He is the most valuable asset to this organization and has at LEAST 2-3 years of awesome baseball left. Yes, he was on the DL here and there but makes up for it obviously when he is playing. KEEP CHIPPER!!!!!
