So what... get it?
Posted by: twistedturnip | January 15, 2009 at 10:22 PM
Good player, he's just so Taguchi sometimes.
Solid reserve in case Milton gets injured. Think Pie is on his way out, pretty sure he's out of options.
Posted by: astralpanda | January 15, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Oops, wow, I didn't know his stats were that awful last year.
Posted by: astralpanda | January 15, 2009 at 10:26 PM
Pointless stupid move. Get Peavy already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Deuce | January 15, 2009 at 10:27 PM
Taguchi is a solid defensive replacement. He's lost a step but he's alright as a reserve outfielder. But I don't know how many times I've seen him make some stupid mistakes. He'll get on base, reach second, and not score on a base hit. I figure that the Cubs will give him a chance in order to help Fukadome. A countryman should do him some good.
Posted by: frontdeskmike | January 15, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Deuce, the Cubs aren't getting Peavy. This is just a MiLB deal anyways. He is just another NRI. It's not a big deal...
Posted by: 123456789 | January 15, 2009 at 10:34 PM
what the heck, why not sign admiral morimoto?
Posted by: CubFanRaysaddict | January 15, 2009 at 10:35 PM
I assume he takes a 40-man roster spot, right? So, who gets the axe? Does the Peavy deal take place and get announced tomorrow at the Convention?
Posted by: initram | January 15, 2009 at 10:35 PM
Leave it to the Cubs to pick up Cardinal sloppy seconds (Miles, Edmonds, etc.). The key is to pick them up before they are washed up, a la Lou Brock.
Posted by: PrisonCityRebel | January 15, 2009 at 10:36 PM
looks like theyre just trying to make the Spring easier for Kosuke. I really do think Kosuke will be better this season. You can take below average offense because hes playing a defensive based position now. I still expect a OBP around .340 which is solid for a CF. Hes capable of hitting .270 with 10 HR. (Kosuke not Taguchi)
Posted by: chicubs25 | January 15, 2009 at 10:39 PM
i dont get this he has lil value in a already crowded out field, besides when are the cubs going give haufpower excuse the spelling but this guy abosolutly tears the ball up but they keep over looking him the past 2 years in spring training and at the mlb level every chance he has gotten why sign a 39 year old nobody lets give the kid a shot.
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 10:44 PM
Prison
Edmonds was very valuable last year for the Cubs. And I have yet to see what Miles can do.
Marquis sucked though.
Posted by: OctoberFlurry | January 15, 2009 at 10:48 PM
I genuinely understand that it is good to have depth (sometimes stock it up in AAA)...but the problem I have here is that we have no use for him. Defensive replacement? Well, we have enough of those. Right now, there is: Reed Johnson, Kosuke, Milton, Alfonso, Joey Gathright. That would seem to be enough for me. Hoffpauir can play an OF spot when needed. There truly is no roster spot for him unless Taguchi has decided (or been forced into) the idea of being the "defensive replacement guy who replaces a defensive replacement guy when the original defensive replacement guy gets hurt". Sorry, I know I was being obnoxious.
Posted by: cycub | January 15, 2009 at 10:49 PM
Justme, you are 100% right. Plus, Huffpauir should of been on the 2008 post season roster instead of Pie, he was tearing it up at the end of the season. Lou really messed up on that one, this year I hope he gets it right.
Posted by: CubsLuck | January 15, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Guys stop overthinking, its for Kosuke. We almost signed him last year to convince Kosuke to sign with us. There isnt to much chance hes on the team by March 15. And can people stop calling Gathright a defensive replacment. Unless hes replacing me in the OF he isnt an improvement. Hes not a plus defensed in any way.
Posted by: chicubs25 | January 15, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Thanks cubluck glad to see someone else besides me agrees i see so many of these blogs and rarely is huff ever mentioned when it seems he is this best prospect right now.
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 10:57 PM
He's 39?
He's so Taguchi!
I have like 3000 'so taguchi' jokes ready that are just as good, if not better!
Posted by: B Fu | January 15, 2009 at 10:57 PM
chicubs25 saying gathright isn't plus is stupid, stop making the rest of us look stupid and look at stats...http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3913&position=OF#value
Posted by: CubFanRaysaddict | January 15, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Hey Prison,
When you can take another teams trash and still win the division you can talk. Edmonds was not St. Louis trash anyways, he was San Diego's. Just look at the trash the Cards have played with the last 2-3 years.
Posted by: masciob2003 | January 15, 2009 at 11:02 PM
I get where you say he is signed for kosuke, but my problem is kosuke is getting payed a ton of money to play baseball as tom hanks said theres no crying in baseball he shouldnt need emotinal support he was brought here because he was supposed to be a pro, they shouldnt have to pay 2 wages to get one good player.
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 11:04 PM
justme,
I see your point but wouldn't you rather try and help the guy you are playing all that money succeed then tell him he is on his own. I would rather pay a little more for him to succeed then just let him continue to fail.
Posted by: masciob2003 | January 15, 2009 at 11:06 PM
Time to shut the site down for a while Tim, this was the news everyone was really coming here for all along.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | January 15, 2009 at 11:09 PM
masciob-
Don't necessarily have a dog in this fight -- but in the past 2-3 years the "trash" won a world championship in St. Louis. Been a long century for the boys in blue...
Posted by: rdp | January 15, 2009 at 11:10 PM
This is solid, although it officially solidifies Pie's departure. Pie's real roster competition was Gathright. Now if Gathright flops as the defensive sub/pinch runner, Taguchi can fill that slot. Remember he can play CF, which Hoffpaiuer can't. That's important.
Plus, he gives Kosuke a cultural bridge. This is better than the 40-year old LOOGY. That spot in the bullpen is actually important!
I understand what people are saying about Hoffpauier, but he will get a shot (at least against righthanders) if either Bradley, Soriano or Lee go down. Taguchi/Gathright are more insurance for injuries to Kosuke/Johnson. Pie will be gone. We need something else who can cover CF.
Solid. (Although in the context of all this crap, it's hard to get excited about it.)
Posted by: jrfukudome | January 15, 2009 at 11:10 PM
masciob you can say that taguchi isn't cardinals trash either he is the Phillies...
Posted by: Tough | January 15, 2009 at 11:12 PM
Yeah of course i would rather and i hope it works but if hes that fragile u gotta wonder is he really worth all the trouble its like having a great player that is always injured and doesnt get on the field all that talent goes to waste if it doesnt make it in the field. When playoff time comes around i want a mental strong and emotionally stable player out there i cant help but to wonder if kosuke is going be that guy
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 11:15 PM
I actually think the Cubs are high on Hoffpaier, that's what gave them the confidence to take on the risk in Bradley. They thought they could replace that pop, at least in the short term.
Posted by: jrfukudome | January 15, 2009 at 11:15 PM
jason LaRue, Todd Wellemeyer, Joel Pineiro, Troy Glaus, Adam Kennedy. That was the trash I was speaking of!!
Posted by: masciob2003 | January 15, 2009 at 11:17 PM
Good point Tough, I had forgotten that he was with the Phillies. My mistake even though So is very forgetable.
Posted by: masciob2003 | January 15, 2009 at 11:19 PM
I think the Peavy deal is near. Look at the pieces in motion today. Cubs sign Taguchi for Kosuke, outfield looks pretty crowded, right? Padres sign Jae Kuk Ryu, who I know is Korean, not Japanese, but he had a tough time adjusting from Korea and has adjusted well now. He is also known by the Cubs organizational people after playing for Chicago for a few years during his tough adjustment period. His talent is another story, but he could also help Fukudome adjust. The Cubs sign Cedeno, making his contract for next year a know quantity. The Cubs show interest in Rich Aurelia, needed more when Cedeno leaves. The Padres announce they are no longer entertaining the thought of signing Omar Vizquel, a veteran who would command more money than Cedeno's 822,000 next season. My guess is Cedeno, Pie, Cleveland pitching prospects, plus all the usual suspects including, unfortunately, Vitters go to the Pads for Jae Kuk Ryu and Peavy very soon.
Posted by: thestrick9 | January 15, 2009 at 11:21 PM
I agree with everything except the parts about Jae Kuk Ryu. The Cubs will not get anyone else except Peavy if that trade is made. Why would Ryu be included anyways?
Posted by: masciob2003 | January 15, 2009 at 11:22 PM
strick9,
Well thought out... Hey, if Towers wanted 7, give 'em 7...
Posted by: jrfukudome | January 15, 2009 at 11:25 PM
Hmmm u make a vaid arguement thestrict it all does seem very odd that all those pieces fall in to place at the same time, but doesnt hendry need aproval from the new ownership before making such a big investment and i havent heard anything concrete suggesting he's gotten anything yet
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 11:26 PM
"chicubs25 saying gathright isn't plus is stupid, stop making the rest of us look stupid and look at stats...http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3913&position=OF#value"
Im going to choose to believe the scouting reports and what ive heard from Royals fans/media. He takes bad routes on balls, and saying that is stupid, is in itself stupid. He is not a plus defender.
Posted by: chicubs25 | January 15, 2009 at 11:27 PM
Actually, I've heard the same about Gathright; he's not a natural defender. But his blazing speed apparently makes up for it. I was shocked by how good his defensive numbers were, at least on FanGraphs.
Posted by: jrfukudome | January 15, 2009 at 11:30 PM
im going take the middle ground on this one i see gathright as a slightly better then average outfielder not outstanding by any means but his speed is extra incentive because he can be used to pinch run
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 11:34 PM
Peavy to the Cubs is not happening and Peavy plus a player that was signed today DEFINITELY is not happening.
Posted by: Tough | January 15, 2009 at 11:35 PM
cubsraysaddict made is seem like i said Gathright is horrible, i just said he isnt a plus defender. I saw the same stats, but sometimes stats lie, when it comes to fielding ill take the word of the people who are trained to evaluate talent. People can look at Sorianos assist numbers and draw the conclusion hes not horrible in the OF, they would of course he wrong.
Posted by: chicubs25 | January 15, 2009 at 11:35 PM
True but if its late in the game a runner on second ill take my chances with soriano because of his arm and increase the odds he may throw out the runner at home or make a runner on third think twice about going home on a short fly with less then 2 outs.
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 11:40 PM
chicubs25,
Yeah, but FanGraphs actually shows Soriano to be a below-average fielder, even considering his great arm. (There's also the counterargument that people run on him more, but as we've seen he can throw it.)
Gathright's range, however, is believable. I don't think he has a great arm, though.

This signing aside, given it's a minor league deal - Hendry has signed too many bench players, so he's making some more trades before spring training.
I'm afraid all Hendry has done is make this team worse if he doesn't get Peavy all this wheeling and dealing of low-rate talent makes No sense
Posted by: Banks1954 | January 15, 2009 at 11:48 PM
agreed my gut on him when he was signed was hendry seen a guy who could help some on defense some with his speed and maybe seen him as a guy who could excell a bit in the right situation without spending big, also he bunts farely well and may be able to beat some ground balls with the slower wrigley infield may make him a 20 point or so better average hitter lil risk here maybe all around reward.
Posted by: justme | January 15, 2009 at 11:49 PM
WOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH
HENDRY YOU ROCK DUDE
This signing is soo not necessary, pretty much stupid, taguchi is 39??? And bats below average??? Probebly hendry needs some pear advise lol here some advise tard trade for cy young award winner peavy and get rid of fukadome, WHAT A WASTE besides the derosa trade and miles signing, wow that's bad, someone mustve sticked a piece of paper on your back with the number 13 on it
OH WAIT DID I SAY ROCK???? I MEANT SUCK LOL GO W.SOX

Cubs Convention begins tomorrow. A Peavy signing and maybe a new owner deal announcement sounds like great, choreographed timing to me.
Posted by: thestrick9 | January 16, 2009 at 12:01 AM
Dude i have my doubts dont think we have enough to get peavy but could u imagine a starting rotation that featured dempster and lilly as your 4th and 5th starters DAMN!!!
Posted by: justme | January 16, 2009 at 12:05 AM
"Peavy to the Cubs is not happening and Peavy plus a player that was signed today DEFINITELY is not happening."
Try again. Ryu was claimed on waivers (he wasn't signed), which means theoretically if the Cubs wanted him, and didn't think he'd fall through (like the poster suggested) the Padres could claim him (as I assume they have top waiver priority) and then ship him to Chicago.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | January 16, 2009 at 12:05 AM
thestrick9, if the cubs SIGN peavy, i assume they will sign A-Rod next.
And back to Gathright, his range is exactly what makes the stats less reliable. He has great range, but his routes on line drives often lead to runners advancing an extra base. Of course he has good range, but ever scout agrees he takes bad routes, which is ok when the ball hangs in the air, but on gappers that should be cut off, he doesnt always make the play.

reference a scouting report chicubs, or a stat, or another UZR, Range factor, anything other than 'scouting reports from kansas city', because every scouting report i saw from his time in the minors and with the Rays said no such thing, not using stats/facts to back up what you say is stupid.

None of the above, SoX MeNaCe is likely a loney 20 year-old that needs to use the shift key to remember which letters are or aren't vowels and still thinks it's funny to pick on peoples' weaknesses to make himself feel better about typing away on his Mom's computer in his basement room before going to check out fetish porn into the wee hours of the morning all the while thinking of himself as a "lower-case "g"".

I would cry if the Cardinals signed Taguchi for 900k. He is not even replacement level. He is not good on Defense anymore also.
UZR/150 has him as -17.9 for last year. God forbid what he will be next year. He has no power and no OBP skills. He is not even worthless he is a negative.

Getting back on topic...
"I assume he takes a 40-man roster spot, right? So, who gets the axe?"
No one. Players signed to minor league contracts with NRIs to spring training aren't on the 40-man roster.
If Iguchi(or any of the other NRIs) make the team out of spring training, they'll be added to the 40-man roster then. :)

I think it's funny that the Cubs have a trend of picking up former Cards (Marquis, Miles,Edmonds, and now So.), and they never go anywhere. I love it :) 100 years and counting, and then here is Lou and Milton being in the same dugout! Let the drama (and failure) begin!
Posted by: PJH | January 16, 2009 at 01:36 AM
I might make some kind of attempt to find somehting else but for right now this is all i have.
Bob (Tinley Park, IL): Hey K-Law, thanks for the chat. What do you think of the Cubs signing Joey Gathright? Low OBP, kinda reminds me of Pie, so why not just keep Pie as 4th/5th OF'er?
Keith Law: Pie has actual upside, whereas Gathright just kind of stinks. And Gathright's a lousy defensive CF too.
I know thats not really a scouting report or anything, but its 2am and im going to sleep. Oh well I guess i know nothing at all about sports because Gathright isnt a plus defender. I appologize.

342 Career Home Runs
1331 Career Runs Batted In
9x All-Star Selection
5x Gold Glove Winner
1973 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award Winner.....
Also....Why would you make fun of a guy b/c of his disorder?....Didnt you know he is also a fellow White Sox Player? (even tho it was only for one year, thats what probably forced him into retirement)..

Here’s the thing I don’t quite get. Why do people think that 100 years of not winning a World Series matters to the average Cub fan? It’s as if winning a World Series in 1958 would’ve made some difference in our everyday lives. I don’t live in the past, whether it’s the 1906, 1969…or 2005. I live in the year 2009 and in 2009 the Cubs are a much better team than the White Sox, Cards, or any of these other teams these guys root for. To those mental giants who write these sort of posts, I say…Go ahead…live a few years behind the times if it makes you feel better, but honestly, it doesn’t make any difference to me – or, I’m presume – most any other Cub fan. We’ll live in the here and now where the Cubs of today are vastly superior to most teams. You can go ahead and root for your teams of years gone by.
Posted by: crunchy1 | January 16, 2009 at 07:49 AM
Good call crunchy. Im 24 years old. Ive been a cubs fan since..I was 5 (somewhere around there) The 100 years thing doesnt mean anything to me. And anybody upset about this signing. Its a minor league deal. Hes not going to be our starting left fielder so who cares.
Posted by: HenryRowengartner | January 16, 2009 at 08:44 AM
A little off topic, but lets stop talking bout 100 years for the Cubbies. The main reason I see that the Cubs have not won a WS in 100 years is ownership. There are 4 types of owners.
Corporation owners- Teams that are owned by a corporation, they normally will not win cause the corp. is more interested in profit/loss and a tax writeoff than winning (The Cubs are an example.) I will explain later in post.
Owners who spend no matter what the cost to try and buy a WS ring. (Yankees)
Owners who spend effectivily and win (possibly a WS ring).
(Marlins mid 90s).
Owners who use the team for a tax writeoff and dont care about winning (Royals)
Getting back to the Cubs. Yes it was 1908 when the Cubs last won the whole thing. But it was 90 years ago this year when the Cubs became part of a corporation. In 1919 the Wrigley Corp bought the Cubs and even tho they had winning seasons after word, the mindset of management was not the same. In 1981 the Tribune Corp bought the Cubs and the mindset was still the same, only recently the Tribune made an effort to improve the team and this was done only to maximize the price of the team.(Winning teams sell for a higher price.) To show what the difference is between an owner and a corp. running a team.
1900-1919 (20 years)
1903-1914 12 straight years with a winning record.
9 years 90+ wins
4 years 100+ wins
5 World Series 2-3
1920-2008 (89 years)
1929-1939 11 straight years with a winning record.
12 years 90+ wins
1 year wit 100+ wins
5 world series 0-5
Amazingly the Cubs despite all the years of being a doormat of the National League still have a overall record of .514 winning pct. I do hope the Cubs can be sold and soon this was supposed to be done last year, and I feel that a blockbuster trade(s) are just waiting.

I hope the new owner is a Cubs fan to heart and cares about winning a friggin' World Series. Perfection is overrated and good things come to those who wait.
/2009 Cubs > all

So according to your logic, the Royals shouldn't have won a WS either? And they did in 1985.

Once again before 2005 it had been 88 years for the white sox. not like you pulling ahead in the world series winning department. 1 more isnt that impressive but whatever keep going along with the 2005 bandwagon. A lot of white sox fans (not saying you) were sleeping for a while then all the sudden....wait, were in the playoffs, wait were in the world series...GOO SOXXXX!! "Screw you cub fans" yeah we get it and its grown tired. ni night!

The only people in the country that seem to think Ron Santo is a HOFer are the Chicago media and Cubs fans. Everybody else thinks it is rather silly.

Kremer,
Yep, and it looks like the Cards will once again finish a sloppy second to the Cubs this year. Or sloppy third, or fourth…
And by the way, considering the Cards have employed Cubs castoffs Todd Wellemeyer, Cesar Itzuris, Miguel Cairo within the last couple of years, it would seem to me that your memory is extremely short.

Well "HenryRowengartner" its time to put you done, 1st of all I want to give congrats to the cubs, everyone else jumped off the disaster train and they stayed on and became the 1st and last 100 season loser, wow great accomplishment, cubs wasted millions and millions of dollars on wood and prior and that didn't take the cubs anywhere, you guys even tryied to sign them again but they got tired of taking your money and chilling in your lil old stadium, bye wood and bye prior, now cubs pride is going down after sosa became garbage and you had to keep people entertained by making a lil dumb song, GO CUBS GO, wow real lame, now cubs are going to the japanese market and picked up and old chopped liver player name fokudome, funny name but funnier stats for a 17 million dollar player lol and supposely soto was the best but alexei had better numbers with less games lol everytime cubs lose in the playoff they find some scape goat, like that guy you guys life you ruined, shame on you, and goats??? Lol maybe you should stop trading and signing players who helped to take you out in the playoffs, 100 yrs and counting and a weak farm system, best prospect is pie? Haha I can keep going on and on but I love seeing you guys everyday in the northside with your lil inside out hats and blue "maybe next year" shirts walking around wrigley field sad, its funny to me is soo many ways.....
So bring it cubs fans sox are ready for the future we don't think about the past, go take care of diabetic ron garbage old santo, future never hall of famer

But lately if you look at it. Some of the players that are getting into the hall of fame these days Santo fits right in. I think his numbers were good. But HOFer....ehhhhh. And I am a Cubs fan.

"The only people in the country that seem to think Ron Santo is a HOFer are the Chicago media and Cubs fans. Everybody else thinks it is rather silly."
This isn't close to being true.

Sox Menace is the absolute epitome of your typical White Sox fan. They are completely obsessed with the Cubs. They have a massive inferiority complex because they know that, no matter what they do, the White Sox will always be "the other baseball team in Chicago." And their organization, rather than simply going about their business, perpetuates this complex with Guillen and Williams' constant whining about the media coverage given to the Cubs and some kind of perceived slight or bias against the White Sox. Sox Menace spends half the night in a Cubs thread (about a minor league siging of So freaking Taguchi for God's sake...), and now 12 hours later he's back in the same spot, continuing his butchery of the English language. Of, and Mr. Menace, before you rip the Cubs for siging Fukudome, perhaps you better go back about a year and notice that your boys on the south side actually offered Fukudome a contract worth $4 million MORE (4 yrs/$52MM) than what he got from the Cubs, but were rejected.

does anybody know if Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto is still available? He'd be a great pick-up for our cubbies

Not sure how many more times the numbers need to be trotted out, but to those that think that Ron Santo shouldn't be in the HoF, or that his support is based on sympathy for his condition, please take a look at them one more time.
Brooks Robinson was considered the best 3rd baseman of that era, and NO ONE argues that he belongs in the Hall. His career numbers:
A line of .267/.322/.401. 268 HRs, 1357 RBIs, an OPS+ of 104, and a .971 fielding percentage.
Now compare Santo's numbers:
A career line of .277/.362/.464, better than Robinson across the board. 342 HRs, 74 more than Robinson in 8 LESS seasons. 1331 RBI, only 26 less than Robinson in 8 less seasons! An OPS+ of 125, superior to Robinson's 104. A .954 fielding percentage, the only category where Robinson outshines him. Santo also made 9 All-Star teams, won 5 Gold Gloves, led the league in OBP twice and finished in the top 10 7 times. Top 10 in MVP voting 5 times, and Top 5 twice. He even led the league in BBs twice.
I don't feel like I'm being a homer when I say that, to me, it's simply mind-boggling that a man with these credentials isn't in the Hall. Santo would deserve to be there regardless of what team he played for.

Youre talking about the white sox not living in the past. then why are you talking about Kerry Wood and Mark Prior? Christ guy. Judging by your long rant of..well nothing. I dont have to re-state what I already did about the 100 years thing. You obviously dont know anything about baseball you just repeat the same junk that means nothing. And CubFanForLife, I actually expect him to butcher the english language...Ozzie does it everyday. Keep making fun of Ron Santos diabetes. Im sure it makes the other 8,000 sox fans that show up for home games, real proud. Thug life baby!
