Derek Lowe Rumors: Friday

7:45pm: Mark Bowman reports that the Braves are actually readying their first offer for Lowe, which they plan to make on Monday or Tuesday. More from Bowman here.

3:40pm: O'Brien has details on the Braves' five-hour meeting with Lowe and Boras.  He says the Braves' offer is expected today and they want Lowe badly.  It may require a four-year commitment.

As far as Kenshin Kawakami - the Braves are among the four finalists.  On the offensive side O'Brien suggests Adam Dunn or Xavier Nady could be targets.

9:26am: According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves met with Derek Lowe and Scott Boras for several hours yesterday.  O'Brien says the Braves' offer was unknown, implying that they did make an offer.

O'Brien also reiterated that Boras said the Mets' widely reported three-year, $36MM offer was never made and would've been far too low anyway.  O'Brien mentions the Phillies, Brewers, and Angels as other Lowe suitors, but Ken Rosenthal said those three clubs denied interest.  Brewers GM Doug Melvin said Tuesday in regard to Lowe: "We're not in on him."

Yankee fan here . .Braves really could use Lowe ! . Vasquez and Lowe is a nice one two punch

I really don't know how anyone can believe Boras anymore.

When Boras is trying to create a price FLOOR by saying an offer, that by all accounts is very real, never happened...you know the market isn't in your favor.

I think it comes down to the Braves and Mets. I hope playing for Cox and a bit more $$$ persuade Derek to help a team become a winner again, instead of joining a winner in progress. *fingers crossed*

The Braves need Lowe, while the Mets could upgrade (i.e. not get Pedro)

Comon Braves. God knows we have the cash to get both Lowe and Kawakami. The season would not be lost with this staff:

Lowe (A TOR guy if not an ace)
Jurrjens (young stud)
Vazquez (200IP +200K at #3, I'll take it)
Kawakami (likely solid #3-4 guy)
Glavine/Campillo/Morton/Hanson (so many good options for #5)

That may not be a worldbeating rotation but with some luck it may contend.

Sign up Abreu or the like for LF, keep all of our prospects and just see what happens.

bbxxj - agree 100%

Sign Lowe. Trade for Peavy.

Ruben make this happen!! This would be so great to rub in the Mets faces, and would be an awesome addition to our rotation

Lowe has finished with ERA's of 3.61, 3.63, 3.88, and 3.24 over the last 4 years. He has thrown 222, 218, 199, and 211 innings in those four years.

If that isn't worth similar money as Burnett to the Braves, I am not sure why.

I wouldn't mind having a rotation that houses 3-4 potential #2/good #3 starters. Hudson is our ace, if we exercise his option (sign an extension, or whatever) and the fact as to if he can pitch again on the same level. Could be an interesting staff in the next few years.

Please, no more Peavy posts, lol.

CottonNash I agree 100% with you. The reason Burnett will go for more money is because his flame throwing ability. He has potential to throw for 150+ K's if he stays healthy. However, Lowe is a very effective pitcher also. He is more of a ground ball guy who will go far in the game. His best season was in Boston when he won 21 games, and he is getting older but I still think he would fit nice in Atlanta. The Braves need to do something now that they have lost Smoltz and the fans are becoming annoyed with the Wren's lack of success.

I think Lowe signs with the Mets unless the Braves blow him away with an offer. The Braves are a perfect team for Boras to use to drive up the Mets offer now that the Phillies appear to be out.

I say Lowe gets 4yr/$50MM from the Mets. If the Mets do fail to land Lowe, they'll push hard to resign Ollie.

I think 3/42 is a good price for Lowe, may not sign him for that, but I think that's a competitive offer. FW is running out of options in the SP FA market. I think they will sign D Lowe.

I won't be surprised if Lowe ends up with 3 yrs/$46.5M from somebody. That's just a best guess.

I'm very confident that the Mets will sign Lowe to a deal that looks like one of the following:

3/42
or
3/39, 4th year option to make it 4/50

I think 4/50-55 will get it done and Mets won't bother to try topping it. That fourth year will be key to land him.

I like the looks of the brave with Lowe, but I don't want to add two more righties to the rotation. We need atleast one good lefty to throw out 3 to 4 times against the Phils. They killed us last year and that lefty core of theres is here to stay for a while. I'd like to see us get Lowe and either try to bring in Perez or try to trade for Maholm. If we could get Maholm we would have a lot more balance going forward. We might end up with Glavine this year but Reyes doesn't have the mental makeup to be a consistant starter. And our other pitching prospects that are close are all right handed: Hanson, Morton, Parr. If we could get Lowe a solid lefty and a righty bat, we could be very dangerous next year. (Yes I know its a tall order)

If the Braves really want to have a shot at winning next season they should sign Derek Lowe and Manny Ramirez. DO NOT TRADE any young cheap players as long as there are free agents available.

We never should have traded flowers for a $10 million+ starter when Jon Garland was still available. Idiocy.

2009 Braves Lineup

1. 2B Kelly Johnson
2. SS Yunel Escobar
3. 3b Chipper Jones
4. LF Manny Ramirez
5. C Brian McCann
6. RF Jeff Francoeur
7. 1B Casey Kotchman
8. CF Jordan Schaffer

If we suck mid season, deal chipper, kotchman and some relievers.

I don't know why we should even bother. The Braves aren't going to sign this guy. Why get into a bidding war with the Mets. The sooner Frank Wren realizes that the Braves should go into full rebuild mode, the better off they'll be. I'm tired of getting my hopes up just the see the Braves get used to drive up the price, lied to by agents, or having Wren bungling everything so far.

Signing Lowe would be huge for the Braves. This has been a horrendous off season so something good needs to happen. I also agree that the Braves need a LH pitcher but would like for them to see if the Giants would trade Jonathan Sanchez.

No matter who signs Lowe, Burnett will get more money because a) he signed with the Yankees who had lots more money to spend than anyone and b) he signed early in the winter, before the impacts of the economic meltdown were fully acknowledged.

Boras is blowing smoke as usual. Lowe may get 4/$56 or maybe a little more when all is said and done. But there's no way in hell he's getting more per season than Burnett, even on a two- or three-year deal.

RobertY, the Braves have a budget and can't afford Manny Ramirez alone....much less him AND Derek Lowe. Plus Manny is not a Braves kind of guy. He is selfish, egotistical, and has no love or respect for the game.

"We never should have traded flowers for a $10 million+ starter when Jon Garland was still available. Idiocy."

Thinking Jon Garland is a good starter. Idiocy.

Javy Vazquez is a much, much better pitcher than Garland, and you'll be pretty happy with that trade when all is said and done.

Vazquez has posted very good peripheral numbers his whole career, and last season was no different. He's posted K/BB ratios of 213/50 and 200/61 the past two seasons, and has pitched at least 198 innings for nine straight seasons.

Meanwhile, Garland's peripheral numbers have been declining ever since 2005, his breakout season, and he's now no more than a solid 4/5 starter. Offering Garland any more than 2/12 is a big, big mistake.

I don't know why the Phillies keep getting mentioned in relation to Lowe. They're out of money (thanks Raul Ibanez signing!) and are probably focused on their 3,214,021 upcoming arb cases.

I don't know if this would play, but could the Reds offer Lowe 4/50 to be their #2. Then turn around and deal Arroyo and Bailey(with another piece or two) to the Yankees for Swisher.

The Reds would add 8.3M in payroll, which is within their budget, upgrade the rotation and add an OF bat that is signed for 3 more years.

I might be dreaming but would love to see it happen.

I believe Frank Wren has been working a lot behind the scenes from the posts that I have seen. I am sure that he already has some deals talked about with other teams.

I believe we have about 33 mil. left to spend I read. Here's what I would do to contend and still not block the "future."

We have plenty of lefty hitters in our lineup and can afford to lose one. With Prado and Infante, they can afford to trade Kelly Johnson, especially since everyone on the Braves is saying Prado is the second best hitter on the team. I would like to see them do a package for Kelly Johnson,Jo-Jo/Morton for Zack Grienke of the Royals. He is only 25 years old and made 1.4 mil last year, while posting a 3.47 and winning 13 games for a bad team. Imagine what he could do in the NL and a little run support. Sign him up for 5 years while he is still cheap!

With a core of Grienke,JJ, and Hanson in the future, it would be like the old days HOPEFULLY!

Sign Abreu for a 1 year/9 mil. Even if he is a lefty, he can still hit and would not block Heyward. Platoon him with Diaz.

CF-Anderson (speed & defense)
SS-Escobar
3rd-Chipper
C-McCann
LF-Abreu/Diaz (9 mil)
2nd-Prado
1st-Kotchman
RF-Frenchy

Lowe (15 mil)
Grienke (5 mil)
JJ
Vasquez
Glavine/Reyes/Morton/Parr/Hanson

If we get to the playoffs we will have a rotation of Lowe,Hudson,Grienke,JJ. Not to bad and will not be very expensive.

Sign Ohman for 4 mil.
Bullpen: Boyer, Bennett, Logan, Ohman, Moylan, Gonzo, Soriano.

I think we could contend with a team like this! What do yall think? Go Braves!

I would love Lowe for the Mets. But I really am having a tough time making up my mind...because I'm kind of scared on choosing Lowe over Perez and having Perez really develop and take it to the next level. Ollie has incredible stuff. So I say as long as only three years guaranteed will get it done for Lowe, do it! But if the Braves go a fourth guaranteed, move on to Ollie.

Lowe is obviously the more sought after pitcher here, but if who ever does not land Lowe ends up with Ollie I really don't think they will be disappointed throughout the years they have him. In fact, the Ollie signer may just win out in the long run...but of course you have to go with the proven consistency at this point.

Really, I'm tired of speculating about Lowe already. The Mets have been "Close" for him since Christmas (Obviously they jumped the gun, but still). It's time for him to work out a contract and sign on the dotted line already.

Bravesfan21,

I'd like to see Abreu on the Braves. But that Greienke deal won't happen. Why should the Royals do that? If he is the ace everyone says, the Royals will keep him -- at least until the deadline, because he's cheap.

If they need to shed payroll, Meche is a much more logical choice for a trade. And the Braves would be nuts to offer those players for Meche.

AdropOFvenom,

Perhaps you've heard of Lowe's agent, Mr. Boras? He doesn't do anything fast.

Oh and Bravesfan21,

I don't care what you've read, Prado is not the second best hitter on the team. Better than Chipper? Better than McCann? Please.

Teammates may say polite things about their colleagues, but a lot of that's BS for public consumption.

would like to see them do a package for Kelly Johnson,Jo-Jo/Morton for Zack Grienke of the Royals.

HaHa! Dayton Moore would even list if that is the only players involved.

I would think we would have to take Guillen's overpayed contract. Plus I would at LEAST take KJ,Morton,Gorkys,BJones just for Grienke much less Guillen overpayed ass. I hope that FW/JS have a deal with DM to land a Grienke type but reality tells me it probably wont happen.

The royals would have to be blown away for Greinke. Sanchez would be interesting, as a back end guy, I've heard he has "Ace" potential, but I've never seen him pitch. We really need some pop in the middle, but I'm not crazy about Ankiel/Ludwick, Nady, Dunn (I actually like Dunn, but I don't think he works for the Braves), or Abreu (the best overall hitter of the group IMO). Anyone have any other ideas for some power?

Jon Garland? speaking of garbage

bravesbacker11,

Jermaine Dye, maybe? We've already dealt with KW this winter, of course.

My guess is it'll be an Abreu signing or a deal for Nady/Swisher, with the Braves giving up more if Swisher is the guy.

I'm still not ruling out Edmonds as a LF platoon, for no more than two years and for less dough than it'll take to get Abreu. Last year his OPS vs. lefties was .883. I'll take it.

I dont know why the Braves wouldnt want Dunn. Corner Of's prices have dropped and a 2/3 yr deal for Dunn isnt a crazy idea. He'll get you 40hr 100rbi .380-.400 obp. just dont have him and Frenchy batting behind one another

Frency He has plenty of Whiff Power...But seriously maybe the Braves can do a 2/18 on Abreu...Otherwise French/AJ WILL be the option. Imagine how many K's thoughs two could put up?? Hopefully both can have Average to above average seasons in 09.

Jermaine Dye would be a true power upgrade, I would have thought that he would have came over with Vasquez though. I would rather have Swisher over Nady. I think Swisher can only improve, as I think Nady is on a plateau. I just don't want Frank to get too desperate and try to acquire Ludwick or Ankiel. Not dissing those guys in anyway, but I don't think you can yet qualify them as "big bats".

It would take a lot to get Grienke, but the Braves should do that kind of deal. Our team is getting younger, thank God and still has talent to contend. Sign a young ace potential pitcher like Grienke/Sanchez while they are still cheap.

I like Dunn also, but could not see him signing for a 2-3 year deal considering it would block Heyward and I don't see the FO giving up on Frenchy yet.

I would rather not do a deal for Nady/Swisher considering we would have to give up players. Instead, we can sign a 1 year deal like we did with Kotsay for Abreu/Edmonds/etc.

The Braves should be very busy in the next week in order to prepare for the annual catchers/pitchers meetings.

I'm more then familiar with Boras, I'm just frustrated over the length of negotiations.

PS: Not sure where to put this, but ESPN 1050's Andrew Marchand had the Mets being the "Clear Frontrunners" for Tim Redding and a deal could be done as soon as today

http://stations.espn.go.com/stations/1050espnradio/blog?id=3480300

Metsblog's Matt Cerrone says it's likely a 1 year deal in the range of 2.5 million. A solid little signing for the 5th spot in the rotation, although I'm sure it has little to no effect on the Lowe negotiations.

Bravesfan21,

I disagree about Grienke. Dayton Moore has pretty much said he's untouchable. That means even if he could be acquired, the Braves would be expected to overpay for an inexpensive, potential top-of-the-rotation starter. The only way they wouldn't wind up overpaying is if Francoeur has performed some sort of Jedi mind trick on Dayton Moore.

The Braves need upgrades in the OF and should not downgrade their offense, which is what they would do if KJ were in any deal. I'd deal KJ for a bona fide ace, but Grienke isn't.

That said, if he were a lefty, I might change my tune.

"It would take a lot to get Grienke, but the Braves should do that kind of deal. Our team is getting younger, thank God and still has talent to contend."

It's going to take more than just a lot. Greinke is a top of the rotation starter that is cheaply under control for the next three seasons. Whatever it would take to land Peavy, it'll take that, and maybe a little more.

Let's assume that Tommy Hanson, Jason Heyward and Yunel Escobar are all offlimits.

I'd guess that the deal would include at least Jordan Schafer, Cole Rohrbrough, and Jeff Locke, unless the Braves were willing to include Johnson.

I could see something like Johnson, Gorkys, Rohrbrough and Reyes for Greinke and Guillen, with the Braves paying the vast majority of Guillen's contract.

I hope they get lowe and either kawakami/sheets

i say we take that same package that we would have given smoltz, increase the base salary to 5 mil and offer it to sheets.

he is a guy coming off an injury and he knows it. if he pitches he makes his 12 mil/year deal if he doesnt he’s out 7 mil and braves can prob get some of the 5 mil back from insurance. i would go so far as to give lowe an incentive contract.

3/year at 13 mil
4th year vests with 550 innings pitched in first 3 years (at least 180ish innings per year)
if he completes 30 starts he gets an extra 2 mil each year that he does.

to be honest i believe almost all contracts should be a few million below market value and if they play average it is up to market value and if they are above average the contract goes above market value. but i guess thats just me

or we could do scribbletones trade for grienke minus rohrbrough and add in 2 of our other starters (morton/reyes/parr)

Lowe 3 years 45 million
Kawakami 3 years roughly 27 million
Dunn 2 years 24-26 million.

Who cares that we might not have a lefty in the rotation if we have talented righties. A good pitcher is just that no matter his handedness. Lowe, Vasquez, Jurrjens, Kawakami, Morton/Reyes/Hanson/Glavine would be a very strong rotation. It doesn't possess a unquestioned ace but not many of those exist. What we would have is 4 guys who profile as either a 2 or a 3. And in the regular season if you can get consistent pitching night in and night out you give yourself the chance to win. As for Dunn, no he doesn't completely fix our futility against lefties. But he hits for power and he gets on base, even at a good rate against lefties too i believe. A player of his caliber might not be available for as cheap as this off season in the near future. For those advocating a Greinke trade, I'll take Kelly + prospects + Adam Dunn for slightly more money than greinke and guillen

With the way things have gone this offseason for the Braves, the cynic in me can't help but feel that this is a ploy by Boras to drive up Lowe's price for the Mets. With all that has happened so far in regard to the Braves I would not be surprised at all if they make an offer and then the Mets either match it or top it by a little and Lowe takes it.

BTW, whoever gets Lowe will be more than happy with him. He is a reliable workhorse and a great presence in the clubhouse. A real leader and should be healthy for years to come. I actually had the opportunity to meet Lowe at the end of the 2007 season and I was shocked at how personable and nice he was. I feel the guy is a superstar and he was totally down to earth and a great guy. I would still love for him to come back to LA. Lowe you will be missed, good luck!

Why would you want to give Dunn $12M/yr? 8, maybe...

I'm wondering, what does everyone think about Lowe signing with the Braves? By this I mean, hes going to be a good addition, but hes past his prime, already being 35 and all. Will he still be worth the investment when Heyward/Hanson and all those prospects are major league ballplayers? It seems like the Braves are geared up more for 2010+ and that an investment of Lowe would mostly benefit the team he signs with the first year of his contract.

Wren just make lowe a great offer that he can't pass up on. and dont screw up on this possible deal like you did on the last two

Sharx,

I haven't looked up his numbers, but Lowe still seems very effective, especially in the NL. It seems that he may a lost a little velocity but nothing to worry about, probably a result of age. He's not a power pitcher by any means and doesn't rely on strikeouts, he has great control and uses the sinker to get outs. I see him more like a Maddux type pitcher, in that he relies on location and variation of pitches to be effective. Which is great for whoever signs him because he should still be effective by the end of his contract. This is also why he has never been on the DL. Plus, he's a monster down the stretch and in the postseason. I see him as a terrific addition to any team that picks him up. Also, Lowe seems to work well with young pitchers, he complements young power pitcher quite well since his style is so much different. For example, I felt that Bills/Lowe or Penny(when he was healthy)/Lowe made a great one two punch on the dodgers because you would see such different styles from one day to the next.

bravesfan,

Gotta give you props for the use of the word "Handedness".

If the braves did what you projected I'd be fine with it. And for once on this site somebody actually put out realistic numbers (thats quite refreshing) That is however atleast 36Mil committed without paying arb raises or strengthening (is that a word) the bullpen. Its undoubtedly a possibility, but I'd rather see:

Perez: 3 yr 30M plus option
Kawakami: 3 yr 24M
Dunn: 2 yr 26M
Ohman: 2 yr 6M

That gives us a solid rotation with no real ace but huge upside. Dunn could take over for Kotchman at First when Heyward is ready, and we would have a team that could better match up with Philly who I believe took 8 of 9 from us at home. (Please correct me if you have the actual numbers)

Plus if we backed out on Lowe and the Mets end up with him, then we have no real competition for Perez.
Plus we have a strong left handed lineup that would match up well with 4 righties in the Mets rotation.

Why didn't the Yanks make Lowe an offer he couldn't refuse instead of signing Burnett? Age? I would rather have Lowe than Burnett.

jamnobody,

If we could get Dunn for 8 a yr I'd be ecstatic, but I honestly think he'd rather lose for than Nats at 12 to 13.

I also have absolutely no problem with us being used to drive the price up on the Mets. I mean what are division rivals for?? If I where the braves FO I'd be trying to drive the price up so the Mets can't afford another bat, and then there are no other serious suiters for Perez. Makes a ton of sense to me:

a) we cost the mets a few million

b) we get a quality starter.

Seems like a win win to me.

"If we could get Dunn for 8 a yr I'd be ecstatic, but I honestly think he'd rather lose for than Nats at 12 to 13."

Probably. But that doesn't mean we should give him $12-13M/yr...he isn't worth it.

"Who cares that we might not have a lefty in the rotation if we have talented righties. A good pitcher is just that no matter his handedness."

Agreed. I never got the point of lefty/righty concentrations in starting rotations. You can only adjust the timing of the rotation so much without messing it up, so generally the rotation wouldn't be tuned to face lefty-heavy/righty-heavy teams.

Lefty/righty matchups are way, WAY more important in the bullpen.

I realized that the money came in over and to fix this you could just defer some money in either dunn's or kawakami's deal until next year. Bullpen is not a strength for the ballclub by the current makeup but i dont see the braves going out and adding another bullpen arm except for possibly ohman. in the end i think he'll get more money elsewhere and go there. the braves just dont put out money for middle relievers/set-up men in free agency. Full years from Gonzalez and Moylan will do wonders for the pen and soriano can hopefully contribute as well. We have Kimbrel and Marek ready to break through to the majors probably at some point during the year so i dont see us spending money on relievers. The money they have to spend, which now stands at around 34 million (assuming a payroll right around 100 million) was factored after arbitration raises.

40 homers and a great OBP are not worth 12 million over 2 years? sorry thats where you're wrong. Atrocious in the field, yes, but his offensive production is great. also, hitting behind chipper and in front of mccann would be the most talent dunn would have ever had around him giving him more oppurtunity to drive in runs and see more pitches

12 million per year

I dont know why everyone is worried about how great lowe will be as our top starter for 3-4 years

2009
Lowe
Vazquez
Jair
Campillo/Glavine
Kawakami

Trade Vazquez after he does great for us next offseason then we have

2010:
Hudson
Lowe
Jair
Kawakami
Hanson

2011:
Hanson
Jair
Lowe
Kawakami
Rohgbrough/Locke

After that we lose both Lowe and Kawakami

2012
Hanson
Rohgbrough
Jair
Locke
Teheran

2013 and beyond the Braves go back to dominance with pitching heck we could even trade Jair right before he hits free agency before the 2012 season and still have a good rotation.

With everything going like that you give the chance for alot of our younger guys to have alot more time in the minors to mature and grow at a non rushed pace.

"To Infinity and Beyond" lol

Drumzalicious,

I like your thinking, but you are assuming that Hanson, Rohraugh, Locke, and Teheran all become successful major league starters, and Jair continues what he's started. (That alot to assume, I realize they all have tremendous upside, but with injuries, and guys like Rich Hill and Rick Ankiel out there, I just think counting on more than 3 of the 5 is risky.)

Plus in any other division I agree about lefty righty not mattering too much in starters, but with that phils lineup you need every advantage you can get.

I dont understand your GM just sign Lowe and move on.

Who does, Cyyoung, who does???

bravesfan22193,

Personally I don't think Dunn should hit in front of McCann if he was signed that is.

I think McCann is a better overall hitter and should be batting in front of Dunn instead of behind him.

I like the idea of obtaining many mid rotation starter but I have to wonder, if we have
Lowe
Vazquez
Jurrjens
Kawakami
Glavine
where does the future go.
If the braves are supposively unable to compete then where are the young kids going to get their chance to gain experience. I havent given up on Morton(who was hyped almost as much as Hanson) or Reyes (who may have the better stuff but just needs to get his head strait)
I even pondered the idea of a rotation of Jurrjens, Glavine, Morton, Reyes, and Hanson. Of course tht was before Vasquez was aquired. Just to put young players out there and let them learn. Although Im not so sure other fans would be as accepting of the the plan as i am, not to mention Chipper Jones. And who knows, the rays do it every year and it can work out. I enjoyed watching the young guys pitch last year even when they struggle. Just watching them learn game to game. And if you think they should be dealt for next to nothing or left in the farm, then just look at smoltz and glavines numbers in their first years and see for yourself.

bravo,

yea i know its still hopeful though. thats why i put a lot of them off the roster for so long especially Teheran. plus realistically you have to expect the Braves to extend Hudson if he comes back in 2010 pitching the same then we have 2 of the best sinkerballers in our rotation and because of that i hope they keep their heads on straight in the front office and extend yunel, johnson, and kotchman and get a good 3B if chipper retires or just trade kotchman and move chipper to 3rd and get a good 3B.

i like the second one better lol

HAHA BRAVES!. U GUYS ARE DONE U HAD UR YRS OF FUN LOL

NO MATTER WHO U GET WITH PITCHING UR OFFENSE ISINT THAT GOOD

METS ON TOP FOR YRS TO COME ;)

Djjack,

I believe the mets have to get on top first, and then actually stay there in september!!!

Drumz,

I agree with most of what your saying, but alot of people don't expect Hudson to pitch next year, and the Braves could very possibly decline his option and try to sign him cheaper and end up missing out on him altogether, a la Smoltz.

And Zephyr, there will always be injuries, those youngsters will get there shots.

Cobrasnake, anyway you put them thats a sweet 3-4-5 in the lineup. Two guys with good power but also high averages and then a masher who also walks a ton.

"40 homers and a great OBP are not worth 12 million over 2 years? sorry thats where you're wrong. Atrocious in the field, yes, but his offensive production is great."

Last season he was worth about 42 runs above replacement level offensively, and about -23 runs defensively. That made him a 1.9 WAR player, worth about $8.7M. Both CHONE and Marcel are projecting him to be less effective offensively next year, to the tune of about a .240/.370/.485 line, and we can also expect him to be worth about -15 runs defensively. That puts him at right around 2 WAR, or about $9M in value.

zephyr,

The Braves have many arms in their system. Its like christmas you see all these new un used toys that you know are yours but you gotta wait

kinda sucks lol

you dont expect him to see any improvement offensively given the protection he would get in the braves lineup?

http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/mlb/players/l.mlb.com-p.5944

i think 2 years 24-26 is a solid bet on dunn. More and it is a risk that he has a fall off reminiscent of richie sexson. however he could maintain his 40 homer pace which has lots of value to atlanta

"you dont expect him to see any improvement offensively given the protection he would get in the braves lineup?"

Nothing worthy of note, no. Do you have any statistical evidence to suggest otherwise?

Would the dodgers get the braves #1 pick if they signed Lowe?

I think projecting Dunn to be a 2.7 WAR player is a bit optimistic, given that his past 3 seasons have been 2.0/3.1/1.9. In 7 full seasons he has only been worth $12M twice.

I believe the Braves #1 pick is protected.

Yes, the Braves' first pick is protected.

Is there any way the Cardinals or Blue Jays decide they have to have Lowe? That would be wonderful. Or even the White Sox or Brewers. Anyone with an unprotected 1st round pick that hasn't already signed a Type A free agent (as Lowe is the lowest ranked Type A FA out there it seems this season). Barring that, I'd rather have Lowe sign with the Braves than Mets since I'd rather have the 7th pick in the 2nd round than the Mets late 2nd round pick.

DodgersBruin - I don't think either LA or STL is looking at Lowe right now; it looks like he's either going to be a Met or Brave next year. Sorry, man - bad compensation system, everyone knows.

Protection? Look, I really don't want to come off as some nerdy sabermatrician, but is there any proof of the effect of "protection" in the lineup? I've never really understood. Yeah, I get the concept - some players supposedly see more fastballs and hittable pitches when batting in front of elite
hitters b/c the opposing team doesn't want to allow the walk and put baserunners on for a HR threat - but can anyone provide a valid example of "protection?" Again, not trying to be arrogant; just interested - I'm totally open-minded to the idea, just currently opposed to it.

Well i think protection matters in certain circumstances and depending on the pitcher as well.

for instance, Chipper Jones, Albert Puljols, A-Rod, Manny, etc Batters of their caliber do not need protection. they have good strike zone judgement and will make the opposing pitcher work and often times the pitcher will call themselves putting it on the corner but these guys make them pay wherever the pitch is.

then you have your 2nd tier of hitters who benefit in a way from hitting infront of a guy like the first tier because the opposing pitcher will try to get them to hit pitches that result in a groundball or fly ball so they dont have to face one of the elite hitters of MLB.

the whole rationale is if the elite hitter hits a HR with runners on its bad, if he just gets a single/double its still bad but if there are no runners on your looking at less damage on the scoreboard.

oh yea the reason why i said i think it depends on the pitcher is because you have some bulldog pitchers that are downright filthy and dont care who is batting and will go after them the same. guys like Santana, Halladay, etc in other words the true Aces of MLB

now do you have any evidence to back all that up?

I think there's only one variable in the offer that the Braves are perparing for Lowe. The guaranteed 4th year. Well it be guaranteed or an option? Considering the Braves were willing to pay Burnett 18mil per year then I don't see the salary part being an issue. I bet it'l be around 15mil to start out then they can go from there. I know he is a Boras cliant but if the Braves offered him a 60mil contract for 4 years considering what he has seen from the Mets that would almost be "an offer he couldn't refuse."(Godfather)

I dont think they should pay him 15 per year the whole contract if its 4 years. his production is bound to drop off so make it 15 the first two years then 14 then 13 with some incentives

The Mets should trade Castillo and Evans to the Yankees for Nady and Cano. I'm sure a change of scenery for both Castillo and Cano will help them. The addition of Nady would give them the right handed bat that they've been lacking. Evans would shore up the Yankees outfield/bench. The Mets' Lineup would look like this:

Reyes
Cano
Wright
Delgado
Beltran
Nady
Church
Schneider
