According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Dodgers made an offer to free agent lefty Dennys Reyes. He says they also want a right-handed setup man - Guillermo Mota or Juan Cruz are possibilities (Cruz would cost a draft pick).
Various reports stated earlier today that the Dodgers made a one-year offer to Trevor Hoffman.

Lets load up on relievers because we only have 3 starters... another long season for the Dodgers. Lets overpay for middle relief, let Manny go, and trade Martin to the Padres for Brian Giles. ugh!

wow, because he wasnt a failure in 06 when we had him....

Wow Denys Reyes....
Went with Konerko to the Reds for Jeff Shaw. Mota? Last time he was here he was playing tag with Piazza in spring training. Let's bring back Niedenfuer too.

All reports I've heard from inside the Dodgers have said they will not sign anyone who costs them a first round pick. I think Logan White and company have something to do with that. I don't know where the Juan Cruz rumors are coming from, then. Don't overreact dusto, my guess is they only end up with one of those veteran relievers, probably Reyes, and one decent veteran in the bullpen is not a big deal. They're still going with youth in the 'pen overall.

Juan Cruz. 2-seamer t-ball, susceptible to meltdowns.

Think your memory is a bit off, since piazza was gone 7 years before Mota was traded.
Posted by: Ivdown | January 07, 2009 at 01:16 PM
Well, the Dodgers DID already sign Juan Castro. Maybe they're just trying to get every player back they once had. Wonder if this means they'll sign Piazza to be Martin's backup.

Dodger fans are like the French; they still are deluded enough to believe they are key players on the world stage. The Dodgers have zero intention of fielding a champion team. Zero. Their only goal is to strike the perfect balance between a low dollar roster and not having fans riot. Their biggest challenge this winter is going to be after the Manny deal falls through, which it surely will, when they'll have to successfully spin to the public that it was Boras' fault.

Sportcenter much?
Piazza was with Mets, chasing Mota around field and clubhouse after a beaning.

He's talking about when Mota pegged Piazza in Spring Training when Piazza was with the Mets, then Mota ran off the field.

Do you think before you speak? From this, I really dont think you do.

"Lets load up on relievers because we only have 3 starters..."
If the NLCS was any indication, James McDonald is ready to be a 4th starter right now. That leaves the Dodgers with just one rotation hole, the least important. That said, I would love if they could somehow appeal to Lowe and Boras' greedy side and outbid the Mets.
"Dodger fans are like the French; they still are deluded enough to believe they are key players on the world stage"
Wow. That shows you know nothing about Dodgers fans OR the French.

Well, I do like cheese quite a bit, and wine, and French women. So I guess in that sense he's right, I am like the French!

The point is that the staff in general is very young. The Dodgers are going to need to fill the pen in order to decide who will be in the rotation next year. Also, with such a young staff, a big pen that can take a beating is essential. Someone like Kershaw may be lights out one start and horrible the next. It's smart to bolster the pen, plus these are low cost, low risk signings. Why would the Dodgers jump at one of the availible starters when no one else is? The market for starters is still developing (can't believe I'm saying that in January, but it's true) and Colletti doesn't want to throw any more money down the drain (McCourt wont let him!)
What's with all this hate for the Dodgers anyway? I agree that McCourt is looking for an opportunity to make a buck, and I am not crazy about him or his wife, but what's with the hate?
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | January 07, 2009 at 02:11 PM
Some people just love to hate the McCourt's and Ned. So what if they sign relievers before starters. Is that so bad? Buy your own team and then you can start calling shots.
As far as i'm concerned, I'll judge the offseason moves at the beginning of spring training, not in early January. Every team, GM, owner has a plan and the Dodgers seem to be sticking to theirs. Hoffman/Reyes would be great pickups for the pen. We'll sign a starter and Manny/Dunn and have a great team going into next year.
All you complainers are giving yourselves ulcers.

Jesus that was hard to digest.. You cannot be serious
Yeah Bills had a rough outing.. He got wild, but he struck out 9 batters in 5 innings. Joe Torre has no idea how to run the staff.
Kemp is no way near his ceiling. Neither is Loney.
