Another washed up ex-Giants?

Really? Are the Dodgers still thinking about Benson? Will they take every crappy pitcher available to Spring Training to see if they can fill out the back end of the rotation with crap? Wouldn't signing Sheets be a better option? I mean, we'll end up using Stults or another organizational pitcher after Vargas and Estes suck or don't make the roster. So why not sign Sheets, let him be dominant for 150 innings and let Stults fill in the rest? Better than 150 innings of 8.25 ERA next season.

Ned is really on a roll here... first Claudio, and now Estes. Let's hope he never pitches a day with the Dodgers...

I haven't heard his name for awhile. I thought he was done a long time ago.

How come these retreads always seem to get a job by someone?

My apologies... it's because he's a friggin lefty.

Like that matters... he's useless.

Shawn Estes is responsible of the greatest baseball I've ever witnessed. It was Clemens first time back at Shea after the whole Piazza/bat incident and not only did he shut down the Yankees but he blasted a home run off of Clemens (Piazza did too). The atmosphere was unreal.

They have so much salary room...

Why Estes?
Why Brozoban?
Why Vargas?

Estes had terrible peripherals last year coming off injury and has never had particularly good control for a guy who also doesn't strike out a whole bunch of people. His only real pluses are being left-handed and being able to handle the bat (big f'ing deal). I am guessing that both Estes and Vargas are moves to try and find a swingman in the spring.

"Unbelievable."

It's unbelievable how Dodger fans overreact when they sign players to minor league contracts.

Yeah, sign crap instead of filling other needs with the free agent market getting smaller every day. That's overreaction huh? Idiot.

"It's unbelievable how Dodger fans overreact when they sign players to minor league contracts."

You clearly haven't followed the Dodgers for the past few years. They sign players to minor league deals who then make the team and suck for the first 2 months before they're finally released. Look at last year, for some inexplicable reason Joe Torre thought that having Brian Falkenborg pitch in high leverage situations was a good idea. Or letting Jason Johnson throw most of his 30 innings (exempted is the extra inning game against St. Louis... maybe).

That's overreaction huh?

Actually, it is. They have a few SP on their radar. They have relievers on their radar, and have been making offers to them. And the only every day player they might add, Manny, is still a priority. But yeah, I guess they shouldn't look to add depth at the bottom of the roster just to please the fans who get antsy when they aren't adding big name players. Last I checked, this has been a very slow moving offseason.

"You clearly haven't followed the Dodgers for the past few years. They sign players to minor league deals who then make the team and suck for the first 2 months before they're finally released."

You're right. They need to hurry up and bring in more Schmidts and Jones.

"You're right. They need to hurry up and bring in more Schmidts and Jones."

Or they could start making smart off season acquisitions. We've already suffered through Pierre, Schmidt and Jones (although, I liked the Jones signing when it happened, thinking he's weigh 215, not 250) over the past few years. I can't wait for Logan White to become the GM after next season. He's responsible for at least 12 of 25 players that will make next season's opening day roster.

And you know how smart acquisitions are made? By being patient.

Wow I thought Shawn was done to jeez 8th team?

"And you know how smart acquisitions are made? By being patient."

So were the Tex and Sabathia signings not smart?

No, smart acquisitions are made by targeting great players. It's a matter of not only looking at the current off season, but also the next 3.
When you worry about "signing an outfielder because there is no other proven guys on the roster" you end up with Pierre for 5 years because "that 5th year was the only way we'd sign him."
Smart acquisitions are sometimes acquisitions that aren't made. But right now, the Dodgers can't run out all their young pitching for 200 innings, or they'll all run a serious risk of injury. So they need good pitching. Instead, they'll setting for Estes/ Vargas/ Wolf/ Garland, etc. Below average pitchers instead of going after the remaining great pitchers (and really, the 2 I thought were the best in terms of value + talent + contract length this offseason): Lowe and Sheets.

oooooooo, Shawn Estes! LOL, not worth posting!

Man you you Shawn Estes is awesome lol jeez.

It's always rather humorous when guys jump on teams for signing players to cheap/minor leauge deals. EVERY team signs a few Shawn Estes and Juan Castros types. Once in a while these signings work out, but even though most don't, the risk is minimal.

I don't recall seeing the Dodgers tout Estes and Vargas as locks for their rotation, so what's the big deal?

"So were the Tex and Sabathia signings not smart?"

Not really. And I would say the Yankees took a patient approach in signing Tex.

"No, smart acquisitions are made by targeting great players."

Well, aside from you disagreeing with my point, I'd agree that you target quality players, but also be patient in signing them.

"Smart acquisitions are sometimes acquisitions that aren't made."

I agree.

"Instead, they'll setting for Estes/ Vargas/ Wolf/ Garland, etc. Below average pitchers instead of going after the remaining great pitchers (and really, the 2 I thought were the best in terms of value + talent + contract length this offseason): Lowe and Sheets."

Well, whatever they do, to this point, the only SP that they realistically could have gotten that they've really missed out on is Randy Johnson (unless for some reason he doesn't want to play in L.A., or I'm forgetting someone). As for re-signing Lowe, I'd be all for it as I think he might just be the best signing this offseason, but it seems that is not an option because Lowe doesn't want to return. Sheets is risky, but I understand the appeal.

And to go with this being patient, I remember when the Dodgers first put the offer out to Manny how Dodger fans were upset because they made such a joke of an offer. Doesn't look like much of a joke now. And just because they go after someone early doesn't mean they aren't being patient, as long as the offer they make is what they deem fair market value and aren't overpaying just to get them to sign.

Leave it to Colletti to find yet another horrible low upside veteran for the Dodgers to go along with Claudio Vargas.

Why not take a flyer on Pavano, Cabrera, Mulder, bring back Penny, but Estes?

Please!

"bring back Penny"

After declining his option, he was no longer an option. And he forced his way off the team, no way should they have brought him back.

Oh, and I'd hardly compare signing Penny to a $5 mil deal worth up to $8, to the Dodgers signing Estes for 550k if he makes the roster.

haha another good move. How many washed up ex-giants are you guys gonna sign? I guess Sweeney wasn't bad enough...

The Dodgers mishandled Penny's rehab...

The guy just wanted to help the team, but believe or not the Dodgers' medical staff messed up again.

Colletti should have patched things up with him, but if not Penny how about Freddy Garcia?

Estes is not even a has been, he is an old never was...

is this even news? WOuld anyone report on a new towel boy being hired?

Why Estes?
Why Brozoban?
Why Vargas?

Gotta do the spell check:
Why Testes?
Why Bozoban?
Why Vartgas?

What's unbelievable is not why some Dodger fans freak out about every minor league deal, it's why other fans defend this owner despite ALL evidence not to.

And for all you Blue Crewers who get all pissy about Dodger haters, here's why any real LA fan SHOULD hate McCourt et al. Hmm, let's see, stadium was gifted to the team fifty years ago, the team draws as manny fans...oh, I'm sorry that was a typo I meant to say many---you won't EVER see manny on that field again...as anyone else in mlb, they sell bazillions of blue everything from fingers to jerseys to auto'd Gibson homer pix.

And guess what? You get zero high end players. And zero respect from ownership. ZE-RO. Enjoy your Dodger dogs!

Have fun on Fan Appreciation Day, the LAST home game of 2009. The lucky fan in reserve section 44 row T seat 4 gets the last Manny wig. Ha!

Hahahaha...... The Dodgers are AAA team!! Please fire Colletti NOW, after please sell the team McCheaps!!

Good job paxterj.... Your the type of dodger fans we need, the type that won't get stepped on!!! I love the dodgers but there not respecting the fans, So no money from ME!!!

Estes really sucks - not that there's any downside to a minor league deal. He had some brief success in '96 - '97 before suffering from Sudden Velocity Loss. That coupled with his awful control has made him a fringe ML pitcher since. He's always had a nice CB, though!

paxterj, what is so hard to understand about this? Like vtadave said:

As for Manny, get back to me when he signs elsewhere. I am not a fan of the McCourts, but I will defend the team when they sign some minor leaguers and not critisize them for not bringing back a player who will likely be back.

Uh...dude, I wasn't even talking about these pitiful minor league deals. I was talking about all the non-deals you're getting treated to.

My point was a bigger one: why do Yankee fans get treated to committed ownership who make every move possible to win the title...while Dodger fans who have donated billions over the years to the organization and made the team a PURE PROFIT deal and are in a bonanza media market get treated like chumps? Really, it's a fair question. What do you, as a fan, deserve?

The team can EASILY afford to compete, not just to win the lame duck west, but for a title. Ownership isn't just bad, it's ripping you off! How does that not infuriate you?!

Put another way, why keep bleeding blue when the McCourts are milking you of your green too?

Jeez, really, look what you've been reduced to, Dodger fans. You're left praying the team signs Ben Sheets?

Well, that solves everything. Good work, ned. No need to go after manny now that we have shawn estes. Here's to hoping that they bring back mark hendrickson, scott erikson and terry mulholland.

I'll take Estes at $1.5 on a one year deal rather than Sheets on a 30 over 3 or whatever.

Estes gets $555,000? That's the money Adam Sandler spends on ice cream helmets at Dodger games.

praise the lord paxterj, amen!

"And guess what? You get zero high end players. And zero respect from ownership. ZE-RO. Enjoy your Dodger dogs!"

They had 1 high end player last season & were 3 wins away from playing in the World Series. Better than what the Yankees, Mets, Angels, Cubs, and everyone else besides the BoSox, Rays & Phils can say.

"It's unbelievable how Dodger fans overreact when they sign players to minor league contracts."

Thank you. Keywords are MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT. People need to take it easy. Every one is flipping out like they just gave Estes a 5 yr $100 contract. Its a low risk sign.

No, Key Words are Signed Shawn Estes....

If this guy doesn't make the team, You'll hear a collective scream from Las Vegas 51 fans (AAA to the Dodgers)...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Is Shawn Estes still alive???
My God, Ned, he should be paying you for a tryout.

Are the dodgers rebuilding?? Cuz I swear I thought I seen in the playoffs last year! Maybe it was the royals!
