Gammons On Varitek, Teixeira

7:21pm Here is a link to the actual radio clip.

6:01pm Chad Finn of the Boston Globe recaps Peter Gammons' appearance today on WEEI.

  • Gammons believes the Red Sox would sign Jason Varitek if he offered his services for $2MM. Gammons still believes the Red Sox would prefer to take the draft picks and trade for a different catcher.
  • Gammons says the player's association was "strongly advising" agents to turn down arbitration offers, but that in the end it cost players like Varitek a lot of money.
  • Gammons says a lot of players could be looking for jobs in the spring, noting that AJ Burnett's agents did a great job considering the Yankees wanted Derek Lowe. As a result, Lowe (a Boras client) is now without a job.
  • Gammons called Mark Teixeira Scott Boras' "ultimate client" and that Teixeira is "very well-programmed."
  • He notes that there was a lot of "testiness" between Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez in Texas and Gammons wonders how Teixeira will handle the high expectations that come with playing in New York.

Teixeira said he had no problems at all with ARod. He said they actually got along. It might be a lie but he sounded really sincere. If he's lying he sounded really convincing. I don't know how much of this "testiness" Gammons saw himself but I don't like to hear gossip or hearsay coming from him.

Tex signed, why do they keep talking about him?

How about current F/A's? What about this Manny character? Is he good?

Looked to me like Tex was lying the whole time. He doesn't care what team he went to he just wanted the best deal he could find.

that would be kind of funny if they truly didnt get along. clubhouse fights and a-rod throwing balls kinda high at Tex across the field lol

nah in all seriousness if those guys get along good and that clubhouse has some good chemistry then i feel they will be the team to beat.

Gammons is a moron

Teixeira will get along fine with A-rod because robots don't feel human emotion.

Its well documented that he did have a problem with Arod. I'm sure he sounded sincere because he a liar. He brought Henry all the way to Texas making him believe that he is going to sign only to tell him that he wants more money. He said it yesterday that he decided to be a Yankee 2 weeks before Christmas then why in the world did he brought Henry if that's the case? I hate to burst your buble but Tex is a jerk who gives crap about other people.

Gammons sounds like he loves the Red Sox.. Has an interest in the Bosox.. or something like that.. Just sounds like a Boston PR man...

Like that bit about "apparently she doesn't like the stores on Newbury Street or something"...

Thats just bitter... uncalled for.

gammons is a whiny douchebag. His RedSox didnt get Tex so he is out to bad mouth the guy and start rumors wherethere isnt any.tex and arod played 1 year together,Tex's rookie year.I highly doubt in 1 season that the rookie 1b and megastar 3b would develop such a dislike for one another.Second, would Petey Gammons call Tex "well programmed"(what is he a T-1000) and the" ultimate boras client" if his redsox got their way and signed him.No he would still be slurping Theo Epstein til May

If Varitek retires or remains unsigned next year (unlikely perhaps) what happens to the Red Sox draft picks?

I used to have respect for Gammons but lately his stuff is very obvious(Red sox would take back Varitek at 2M..Well du'h..)

and very biased from a very obvious Red Sox point of view. When I read stuff like "very well-programmed." it's like he's trying to fault Tex for following the advice of the agent who's made his client more money than they'll ever need. Get over it Peter..

This was posted in one of the Yankee website.

I heard a radio interview with a reporter who said that Tex hates arod, going back to their days at Texas,

No matter how much he loves the sox he still acknowledges the Yanks are better, that say a lot from a man who hasn't picked the Yanks to take the division in like 7 years. The comment about Texeria's wife was just classless.

It's amazing that Gammons can even speak with Theo Epstein's dick in his mouth.

Yesterday, Tex told Michael Kay on ESPN 1050 that Alex took him out to dinner when he first arrived in Texas and that he picked his brain for baseball knowledge all the time.

But hey, when Gammons is talking, facts, truth, and reality cease to exist.

It's amazing that Gammons still claims he works for ESPN.

The wineries in Mass need to check their crop..cause the grapes seem pretty darn sour!

Joseph Phillips's comment at 6:45 is the funniest thing I've heard/read this week.

Hey Rich,
We all know that Tex never lies does he?

Last time I checked, Gammons was inducted into the Hall for his reporting. What have all of you people out there done for baseball? It's actually well documented that the two had some issues in the past, not to say that they haven't moved past it now that they are 180 million and 275 million dollar men. At least they better for what they are being paid.

Does anyone really care if Arod and Tex get along? Jeez..I dont need em to pal around, I need em to play baseball. Heck, I hate half the people I work with, doesnt mean I cant do my job well.
Talk about overblown...

JudgeNY- It just so happens that this is the prime year for him to pick the Yankees and keep his bias intact. Whine about missing Teixeira, insult his wife (never mind that the guy grew up worshiping Don Mattingly), set up the Yankees to be the favorites, and if the Red Sox do better, write about how great they are some more. I'm not impressed.

celtics464- It's pretty obvious that that isn't true. The Nationals reportedly had their offer at $190 million, but he passed that up because he wanted to play for a winner (a desire that led to the Rangers' trading him instead of re-signing him), and, like I just said, his favorite player was Don Mattingly. At the Yankees' press conference, he said he had season tickets to the Orioles games but wore a Yankee hat. And the Orioles were good back then. There's reasonable evidence that he was just waiting for the Yankees' official offer. Once he got it, it was a done deal.

It's really ironic how Gammon's coined a lot of the new internet sites as "ScottBoras.com" but at the same time, Gammon's is the biggest Sox homer out there. He is Theo/Henry's personal PR man.

The man used to be a great baseball writer, but has been drinking too much of that red sox kool aid lately. Every piece that he writes, some how, some way ties itself back to the Red Sox. He just cannot stop but reference them, even when they have nothing to do with the story. You cannot take anything that Gammons says regarding the Red Sox or any of their rivals with any sense of objectivity. Period.

NY got over the ARod/Jeter stupid crap, i dont ARod/Tex is really going to be an issue. Plus when your team losses 100 games i think everyone gets testy with one another.

As for Gammons, low blow on Tex's wife. Hall of Fame writer? Seems like he's starting to be that 80yr old grandpa who just says crazy things now.

People don't get along on teams. It's not a shocker. Teams are still capable of winning. It was documented that Tino and Posada didn't speak for months, yet once they were on the field it was all business like it should be. Tex is a class act and is exactly what you want in a baseball player he will be able to put it aside. I am personally more worried about Arod who is in love with himself and already jealous of Jeter's spotlight. Now Jeter AND Tex will be ahead of him in the spotlight/performance. Hopefully it fuels Arod like in 2007 instead of continuing his path of being a choke artist like every other year he played.

Also, Gammons speaks as if the whole negotiations with the Sox were just to string them along, and that Scott always wanted Teixeira to signed with the Yankees.

Why in the world would Boras wanted Teixeira to go to the Yankees??? That would be a worse case scenario for Boras, since that would basically remove all suitors for his other client Manny. The best case scenario for Boras would be for Teixeira to sign with the Red Sox, and that would leave Manny available for the Angels and Yankees. Of course common sense doesnt matter when Gammons is writing about anything Red Sox related.

Gammons was also talking to Boston radio/fans so he was trying to make that connection/ratings etc.

"Gammons sounds like he loves the Red Sox.. Has an interest in the Bosox.. or something like that.. Just sounds like a Boston PR man..."

I love it when Yankee fans always write this rubbish... Of COURSE he is a Sox fans.. Why do you think he does charity fund raiser numerous times per year with Sox players, brass etc and wrote for the Boston Globe for what? 15 years before going to ESPN??

johns- Yankee fans get mad at reporters because there's not one reporter who actually talks positive about the Yankees. the guys on ESPN always take shots, the NY papers dont even like the Yankees. Anti-Yankee media sells and gets ratings, that's just how it is

lol @ yankee fans gettin all butt hurt cause Gammons doesnt kiss their ass. Hilarious.

guarantee the tex/arod fued rears its head during the season.

LOL @ all Yankee haters that think Yankee fans care what they say.

NedCollettiClueless-

Dumbest thing I have read today. No one is upset because he doesn't "kiss their ass." For the past years he has become a horrible reporter. Shots at Teix's wife is completely uncalled for and simply ignorant. He has let his bias become known, and everything the Sox do become overblown. You can say that he is a Hall of Fame writer but since then his stuff is complete rubbish.

"Yankee fans get mad at reporters because there's not one reporter who actually talks positive about the Yankees. the guys on ESPN always take shots, the NY papers dont even like the Yankees. Anti-Yankee media sells and gets ratings, that's just how it is"

You are correct for a fact on Sherman for what is it? The NY Post? It seems like that guy flat out dislikes the Yanks in some of his articles.

Have not noticed an awful lot of bias in Olney's articles, other than the extravagant FA spending spree of late he has been blistering them on.

I REALLY liked what Gammons said regarding Tek and only offering him like a lowball 2 million. really hope that's the max they will give him, the picks possible (even if only 2 comp) are worth far more than he is at any price and Boras really blew it with Tek over arbitration. Wonder it tek will dump him as an agent after this now???

glen quagmire-

Why?

Because Gammons says it will?

Gammons was giddy like a school girl when he thought the Sox were going to land Teix. Gammons is moronic.

Why is it "rubbish" when it's true? They are just reiterating that Gammons's Boston-NY reports should be taken with a grain of salt.

If you want to deem that as "rubbish" then Gammons's report is "rubbish" because OF COURSE there would be tension between teammates. It's called competition.

Do they get along? Who cares? As long as they put up numbers and get into the postseason. I'd rather take two rivalrous stars like Tex and Arod than two buddy-buddies that couldn't hit for a lick.

The red sox dont get a draft pick for Varitek unless he retires or signs after the draft in June. If he signs anytime before then they get a pick.

Stark loves the phillies. Law loves the Blue jays. gammons loves the red Sox. Olney Loves the yankees. Get over it guys!

I agree.

Gammons isn't a Hall of Fame writer. To my knowledge, there are no Hall of Fame writers, only winners of the Spink award, which is given out once a year. Murray Chass won in 2003, and Gammons in 2004. Tracy Ringolsby the year after. No one can dispute Gammons' horrible, horrible bias. Everyone knows he's a Sox fan, and that's fine. But good national journalists take bias out of their reporting. Gammons doesn't even try, and he's inarguably the most biased national, high-profile journalist today.

Hey terry,

Provide proof that Tex is lying.

Gammons is nothing but a soxs fan enough said...

I agree.

I second that. Lets put it to rest now.

Pete has always been a Red Sox fan as we all know. That's fine but to take shots at other reporters for being Boras surrogates while he shills for his boy Theo is mind boggling.I think Pete has gotten a lot worse since his health problems. He is always trying to be the hipster with his rock references which are a little embarrassing after awhile.Anyway,as others have said you have to filter his views through a Boston prism and move on.

I have no problem with peter gammons being a fan of the game and of boston, but dont act like he's a reporter reporting unbiased news..

He's a Red Sox PR man now.. writing articles for the red sox now.. How quickly he turned on teixera after signing w/ ny.. and how he viciously crucified Manny after he was traded.. I understand how people could hate Manny, but he wrote numerous articles/posts after the trade bashing Manny.. serious intent there..

Bill Simmons (another Boston lover), wrote a much more level headed article on him a little after.. criticizing, yet appreciated what he had done..

Regardless of who you like and don't like I think the thing that should be pretty obvious to everyone is outside of the Yankees there is apparently not much of a "market" that will pay these players what they want anymore. Even the Red Sox and Angels (two of the bigger salaried teams) are turning their backs on big contracts.

K-Rod signing for considerably less was probably the first sign that the market outside of the Yankees was smaller and now the fact that guys like Lowe can't seem to get an offer even remotely close to what they had originally thought is a pretty good indication of what some of the even lesser guys can expect.

The A's signed Giambi for about a 1/4 of what the Yankees paid him the year before when he hit 32 HR's with 96 RBI's.

I digress.....if I am a guy like Varitek or Jon Garland I would have some serious issues with my agent right now for directing me against taking arbitration.

Teixeira will get along fine with A-rod because robots don't feel human emotion.
