"Pitchers and catchers report"

Its great to hear that line again.

Josh Phelps could be this years Jorge Cantu sleeper if he gets a chance...

Eli Whiteside, thats a familiar name. The Orioles once thought of him as a top prospect but he never could put it all together and make it to the bigs.

this is going to be a good spring. I'm looking forward to seeing how Matt Downs does this spring. Jesus Guzman could be a surprise as well as Josh Phelps.

Hopefully Kevin Pucetas will push the envelope and Noah Lowry will be healthy, then the Giants will have a real good problem on their hands.

Buster Posey is absolutely disgusting. Watching him play at FSU was an amazing experience, and that kid sure knows how to hit. Hell, I might become a Giants fan just to watch the kid.

I really see the Giants being able to shop Lowry come end of spring training. From all sources he's going to be good to go. To much pitching is a good problem to have, especially when we need some bats.

Pucetas does not seem ready at all, I wish he would have a had a much better winter league season since he hasn't played above high A ball yet.

Jesus Guzman looks really interesting, I feel like not enough Giants fans know about this guy, granted he is very new. Set the RBI record for the Venezuelan winter league this year while finishing second (to Sandoval) in batting average. Anyone have good info on this guy, we just signed him away from the A's or something?

I think the real question is since Posey has been invited to ST, and if he proves he can play in the bigs, do the Giants put him on the roster and make a move with Molina (since they have Posey and Sandoval)?

Looks a little inconsistent, not a real growth pattern.

liking the inviting of Posey, Pucetas, Downs, Guzman, and Phelps.
Posey should get more time learning to call games while at spring training. Hopefully Phelps and Guzman will have great springs, leading to their additions to the roster. Phelps and Ishikawa could platoon at first, while Guzman gets his shot at third base, thus allowing Sandoval more time to adjust to third in Fresno

Kfer--
i think inviting Posey was just to get him more instructional time behind the plate. It will probably lead to a September call up though.

I'm rooting for Scott McClain to make the team. It's a long shot given the team's emphasis on youth, but man was it great watching him play last year and get his first big league homer.

Also, given that the Giants need a solid 1B and 3B, both of which he can play, it would work out well for all parties.

Good luck Crash McClain!

Yeah, i would tend to agree that the Posey invite, while deserving, is more of a find out first hand where he is at and how far out he might be. I don't think the Giants are looking at him possibly making the roster out of spring, but more concerned that they put him at the right instructional level and an idea if he is a late season possibility. Also, the Giants have to be wondering what to do with Molina beyond this season.

If he does well, I expect the Giants may entertain offers for Molina mid season, depending on where the team is. That's going to be a tough call. Extend him 2 seasons (he probably won't take 1), trade him mid year, or offer him arbitration in the hopes he excepts for 1 season of brings in 2 picks. Thats for another time I suppose

Fair enough, but if the opportunity presents itself, say from the Yankees who need a catcher,...just a thought in my head.
No matter what, I'm excited to see all these kids competing for spots and also see something of the future.
This ST big question is "Who is on 1st" Ish, Bowk, Little Money, Will Clark, JT Snow, Darth Vader, etc. Won't know until April.

sandoval is not going down to fresno to refine his glove at 3B...WE NEED his bat. Is he still eligable for rookie of the year? if so...he will win it.

"A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list)." MLB.COM

Sandoval had 145 ABs last year so he can't be rookie of the year. After hitting .345 last year he'll be given every opportunity to be full-time at 3B or 1B depending on how the roster fills out before April.

I certainly enjoyed following the Giant down the stretch last season. Things seem to be on the uptick. They'll surprise some people this season.

Picked up Sandoval in my fantasy league and he flat won it for me. He was electric for quite awhile.

Agreed Cory...
Once they let the kids play, it got fun!!!

I'm not a bay area local, but it seems that the Bonds era fog has lifted for the Giants. They've developed some great pitching and there are some real bats coming along.

I dont see why the Giants go after Adam Dunn. If theyre in the hunt for Manny they can definately get Dunn for alot cheaper. In a division like the NL West I think that would make them very good contenders.

All WE ARE SAAAAYING IS GIVE SCOTT A CHANCE!!!

Scott McClain is a corner infielder for the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA for the Giants) who has tremendous upside.... And the Giants have let the guy ROT in the minor leagues. Dude has hit 30+ Bombs for as long as I can remember, multiple winner of the PCL player of the year, yet gets overlooked every year. Can play both first and third, outfield, and can freeking MASH!!!!
Now he's another year older (36-37??) and will most likely be waisted again....

Huge mistake on the Giants part, yet nobody see's it...

GIVE SCOTT A SHOT, Damn IT!!

Kfer: I love your enthusiasm but a good spring training would not be enough to induce another team to give up any thing for Lowry. If Lowry does show well the question becomes will management have the guts to tell Zito he is long relief while they give regular work to Sanchez and Lowry so that they can try to build value in the first half of the season? Lord knows Zito will not be able to build enough value to be trade able any time soon.

Nuchler – on Molina: Just offer him arbitration after '09. If he takes it the team has a 1 year deal. If not the team gets picks to recharge the farm with while Sandoval and Holm hold down C tell Buster is ready. Heck those picks would make it easier to make a run at a Helton or Beltre next winter with out choking the farm.

I got to meet Crash Davis (a.k.a. Scott McClain) a couple of times last season. Great guy and very nice. Though a longshot, I wouldn't mind seeing him make the big league club.

On the note of who'll play first, if the Giants don't make anymore moves, I think Ishikawa will be our starting 1B (unless something happens during spring training). If the Giants make a move for a 3B, then Sandoval will probably move to 1B.
