Manny Ramirez Rumors: Friday

11:00pm: Schulman says the Giants have had conversations with Boras about Manny, but have not extended a formal offer.  Nothing is imminent, and the Giants are considering other options via trade and free agency.

3:33pm: The Chronicle's Henry Schulman doesn't have anything new on the KPIX report yet.  But he's heard that the Dodgers offered Manny $60MM over three years at some point and were turned down.

2:40pm: MLB.com's Chris Haft splashes some cold water on the KPIX-TV rumor.  His sources say recent reports linking the Giants to Manny are overblown.  The Dodgers may be the only truly interested team currently.  Haft says the Giants are looking to add a corner infield bat instead (they've been linked to Edwin Encarnacion and Jorge Cantu in the past, among others).

1:30pm:  SI.com's Jon Heyman was able to confirm that the Giants entered the bidding for Manny.  He says the Dodgers remain interested, and that "some baseball people" aren't writing off the Angels despite Tony Reagins' public statement.  Heyman adds that one or two other AL teams are on the periphery, the Yankees not among them.

6:05am: There's a rumor making the rounds from Dennis O'Donnell of KPIX-TV of San Francisco.  O'Donnell says the Giants have offered Manny Ramirez a four-year deal.  Reasons to treat the report with skepticism:

  • O'Donnell says it's a fourth-year club option, so it was inaccurate to call it a four-year offer.
  • We haven't heard anything about this from the Giants beat writers or national reporters, who have a better track record than television stations.  Henry Schulman covers the Giants for the San Francisco Chronicle, and he says the team "could consider Ramirez under very specific financial conditions."  He was probably not referring to a three or four-year offer.
  • O'Donnell was told by a team spokeman, "It's not happening."  Scott Boras' publicist "had no knowledge of any negotiations with the Giants," according to O'Donnell.

J Broxton blew 8 out 22 saves chances last year and Dodger fans want to say Wilson is overrated. Please comeback to earth!!! The job of the closer is to close the game. Slam the door, turn out the lights. Fancy whips and era's to me don't matter if the guy blows the lead for his team.

LOL,

You guys are like bad sports writers with your taking things out of context!

The MLB Network quote stated, "I believe them before I would believe YOU"

- Why shouldn't I? They are the paid guys, you are some dude on the internet. They don't have homer views, we as fans do.

The Crystal Ball quote was for Blake saying "Trust Me" about how a pitcher will do this coming season! and saying the Wilson will have arm problems again. Who knows if Wilson or Kuo will have arm problems???

It's cool...It will be October before anyone is proven right or wrong...

I still say whoever gets Manny wins the West. If you don't agree..thats cool too!

You guys can continue to talk about how great the Dodgers are as well. It's a free country. Truth is, Dodgers got better when Manny was there. Giants got better when they started playing the kids. We will be better this year. Not Playoff contenders, but like I have said all along, Giants are in the NL West race and if Manny comes (which most likely wont happen) will win the West.

Peace

Cut,

IMO, it's not that farfetched to think that the Giants could be a .500 team in 2009. In August and September of 2008 when they were playing their young players more, they went 28-27. If the Giants get Manny (which I don't think they will), then they are the favorites for the NL West. If the Dodgers get him (which I think they will) then they will be the favorites. If neither team gets him, then I'd say the Dodgers are the better team between them and the Giants.

The Giants should be better next year but still lack enough offense to challenge the Dodgers.

Unless the Dodgers re-sign Lowe, the starting pitching will take a step back but with Manny around for a full season and if Furcal is healthy, then the offense should be much better.

I also think the Dodgers are going to get Hoffman and if they do that and move Broxton to the bullpen, then the bully should be very good again with Elbert, Troncoso, Wade and Kuo backing up Brox and Hoffman.

I also am really excited about James McDonald and think that the Dodgers have 4 very good starters in Billingsley, Kershaw (with another yr of maturity and experience under his belt), Kuroda and McDonald (no ER in Sept call-up and in the playoffs).

Guys like Garland, Wolf or Looper would make serviceable vet signings.

Especially now with $12 more mill freed up with the deferment of part of Andruw Jones' 09 salary, the Dodgers should be able to get a decent vet SP and probably Hoffman to close.

Those signings, along with the exected improvement from young hitting studs like Kemp, Ethier, Martin, Loney and DeWitt AND hopefully the health of Furcal should make the Dodgers prohibitive favorites in the NL West.

cutmeibleedblue:

You call someone ignorant and then follow that up with saying Brian Wilson isn't an All-Star?

LOL! You must have missed the ASG last year.

"Just because you don't understand statistics dosen't make them irrelevent, it just makes you ignorant."

I guess I'm ignorant if I believe a pitcher who comes into a game late with his team leading 22 times and he chokes 8 times is a bad stat. ERA+ is a good stat for a starter but really irrelevant for a closer.

kdub sez to cutmeibleedblue:

"You call someone ignorant and then follow that up with saying Brian Wilson isn't an All-Star?

LOL! You must have missed the ASG last year."

Ignorance is bliss.... He knows he was in ASG, he's stating that he wasn't All-Star caliber.

I'm not completely sold on Broxton yet, I think he really needs to mix in a 3rd pitch, a changeup. He did blow the 8 of 22, but basically in 1/2 season as an MLB closer, the crappy trial by fire experience, believe it or not, tends to help.

Barry Bonds is goin back to the Giants? No wait Manny? Welcome back Barry Bonds so much alikeHomerun hitters and lazy left fielders. My guess is this sounds kind of weird I know Reagins the Angels GM said they won't pursue Manny they despretly need a bat Manny is the answer and you will see him in red next year.

I was surprised Wilson got picked for the Allstar game, but at the time Wilson had somewhere around 20-25 saves in a row. I believe that's why he was picked. Plus 100mph doesn't hurt.

News scroll at the bottom of MLB TV indicates that KPIX says a four year deal was offered. http://cbs5.com/sports/giants.manny.ramirez.2.896827.html

Point of my previous post was that other media outlets are still indicating four years.

dodgerfansridiots,

Dont forget about Romo and Hinshaw.

Damn dude!

I hate the Dodgers and find those guys homers...

But no reason to wish death on someone...just a game!

For whoever thinks Wilson is not going to just get better are idiots. The guy works harder than anyone and is known by his teammates as crazy. Got a chance to talk to a few players after a Doyer/Giants Doyer Stadium game by there bus and Wilson was no where to be found. Romo said he was probably running steps. To quote Romo "That F***er is loco!"

Anyways, Wilson is working hard and Broxton is working hard at the kitchen table. Wilson does need to get some movement on the ball and an effective 2nd pitch, but he has has said in the past at this point in his career he does not want to get beat with anything but the hard stuff. He's still getting better though, he only has one full big league season under his belt.

cutme and mr. blake - you have said some absolutely stupid comments. Truth is: us giants fans and you dodgers fans like our teams and hate the others, as we should. But the fact is, as much as you blueheads don't want to believe it, we WILL be competitive with you this year!

"But he's heard that the Dodgers offered Manny $60MM over three years at some point and were turned down."

That offer is pretty old news.

It will probably come down to who offeres 3yr 75 mill

The update from Schulman, and the news that the Dodgers reworked the Jones contract means that Manny is probably going back there.

Once he re-signs with the Dodgers, Sabean will have to figure out how to compete offensively with LA, bacause no matter how improved the Giants' pitching may be in 2009, the Giants cannot compete unless SF improves its run production. And if all he has to show for his offseason offensively is signing Renteria, then Sabean failed. Waiting for bargains to fall into his lap and then getting none won't get it done.

If Burrell wants to play 1B, he'd be a good pick up. ONLY at 1st.

I think Boras will get 3 years at $22 million each, plus a fourth option year based on plate appearances, from the dodgers.

all the rumors about the Giants having an interest wis just hype.

manny wants to be a dodger and noone else, not even the Giants, want him enough to make a serious bid.

besides, Manny is a locker room problem and the Giants had enough of that recently with Bonds, so they'd like to take a break.

Manny is also one injury away from being a huge waste of money.....Boston knows that. Even New York knows that...

yep, manny will be a dodger.

I think this is getting ridiculous. I am not going to take anyone to court, but seriously guys, are we getting to the level of calling names and insulting each other? We're talking baseball. Everyone knows baseball, more than any other sport, is a game of numbers and probabilities. I mean, you can call people names all you want, but it just digresses from the conversation at least I am trying have about the Dodgers and Giants.

I never once said the Giants wouldn't be contenders this year, contrary to what many Giants fans (who have also insulted me and called names like a five year old would) said I said.

Lelend11, I concede the Giants have a superior rotation, have a decent bullpen, and a decent lineup. However, what I am pointing out is that the Dodgers, even as is without Manny, are better. Quite frankly the Giants are just about done "spending" this offseason, while the Dodgers still have about $45-55 million to work with to sign players. I never said the Giants wouldn't be contending, in fact I said just the opposite across multiple topics and rumors. So quit putting words on other people's mouths.

Also, baseball is baseball. Sometimes it is unpredictable, but most of the time it is predictable by the numbers. If a really bad offensive team goes against a great pitcher, or a player has a history of batting poorly against a specific pitcher, 90% chance they stick to that pattern.

Now, if a career ERA of 4.55 (Affeldt) is a great, proven pitcher, then shoot son, there are a lot of pitchers in that category. You know who owns that ERA? Granted, once again, I never said Affeldt was a bad pitcher, nor did I say that about Wilson. I did say that Kuo is better than Affeldt (look at the numbers not me - and he get the Set-Up Man of the Year Award). And I did say Broxton, overall, is better than Wilson. Who knows? Wilson may improve drastically next season. He DOES have the stuff to be a great closer, but he needs to locate, locate, locate. I also said Howry isn't great. If you call a pitcher that throws mostly fastballs (at 90-92mph) with no movement and a 5.35 ERA in 2008 good, then you need to check again.

Oh, and if I did say that Romo and Hinshaw were bad, please quote me. I guarantee you won't find that anywhere. In fact I praised Romo for having great stuff, and a minor league resume to back up assured success in the majors.

And I like to look at minor league stats that lead to the majors as well to indicate what kind of success a player will have. Sandoval will be a great hitter, but he is the only one currently in the majors that will contribute in a major way to the Giants lineup. Romo had terrific minor league numbers. Wilson had them too, but his Tommy John surgery, and apparent lack of a back-up closer would worry me. Hinshaw, in order to truly be successful, needs to get that BB/9 ratio down, and his K:BB ratio up. You better hope you get Affeldt of 2007-2008 and not the Affeldt of pre-2007.

Again, I point out that the Giants are just about done spending this off-season, while the Dodgers still have a lot of money to spend and work with. The Giants have some good players in low A ball, and high A ball, and as high as AA, but not a lot of depth immediate to the majors. That should be another concern for the Giants.

I am no homer, I am a walking-baseball encyclopedia. I live and breathe baseball (not just Dodgers). I know a LOT about baseball and I don't say things without carefully considering a number of factors beforehand. At the very least I have numbers, stats, trends and history to back up my arguments, whereas many who insult me do not.

Also...how in the HECK does making the playoffs this year with Manny not count "dodgerfansridiots"? It totally counts. What, if you have a bonified slugger in your lineup making the playoffs "doesn't count"? What?! So I guess the two years you made it don't count because you had Barry Bonds right? Seriously...grow up children.

Dodgerfansridiots,

1) Have a civilized discussion for once.
2) Calling someone an idiot makes you appear more like an idiot than they do.
3) Name-calling, smack talk, tough talk, and all those kinds of talk, do not behoove, nor do the spur intelligent discussion.
4) Baseball is a game of numbers. When someone uses numbers to predict something, or make an argument based of the numbers, that isn't being stupid, that's being thorough and thoughtful.
5) Instead of insulting us, counter our arguments with counter-evidence. Trying to counter our arguments with insults, instead of counter-evidence, is called a Red Herring, and would get you chewed up in a formal discussion.
6) Do you see baseball analysts and writers calling each other names? No. Have I, and most of the Dodgers fans on here maintained an ethic of agreeing to disagree and not deteriorating to infantile name-calling? Yes.

So please, grow up, be civilized, and stop name calling. Its like a bad stain on your shirt, and smelly breath. Even if you have great points and arguments, if you have a stain or bad breath (name-calling, vulgar language, and insulting) then people will focus on that instead of your arguments.

OHH BOY!!

the rivalry is already starting to heat up and we are only in December

I expect to see alot of great heckling going back and forth between us fans when I go see SF vs. LA in beautiful AT&T Park and at crappy dodger stadium

B3AT LA!!!

B3AT LA!!!

sorry for the double post

"Manny is also one injury away from being a huge waste of money.....Boston knows that. Even New York knows that..."

Isn't that true of every player making more than league minimum?

"5) Instead of insulting us, counter our arguments with counter-evidence. Trying to counter our arguments with insults, instead of counter-evidence, is called a Red Herring, and would get you chewed up in a formal discussion."

Isn't that more "Ad Hominem" than "Red Herring"? It's an argument against the man instead of the actual issues.

A lot of hate in this thread, 2009 with a bang..

But when push comes to shove..

Martin is better than Molina.
You ask 29 GM's in the game how many take Martin? I'll say 29.

Loney is better than Ishikawa(sp), Loney is better than Sandoval, Sandoval might hit better than him, I don't think it will be next year however. Plus Loney's Defense makes it a little bigger..

A full year of Dewitt should put up a 270/350/420 line.. While playing some damn good Defense at second..
Velez is hot garbage, and Burriss is decent.. I highly doubt one of them or a split between them out performs Dewitt.

If Furcal stays healthy he is better than Renteria, if you think otherwise then so be it.

Sandoval should out hit Blake, but Blake is a better defender.. But I will take Sandoval..

Lewis is better than Pierre, I actually like Lewis even though hes a bad fielder.. Yes hes a bad defender, he takes bad routes and is helped by plus speed..
But Manny is better than both and which ever team gets him has the superior player and makes them 10x better..

Kemp is better than Rowland..
Not even close.

Ethier and Winn are about the same.. Slight edge to winn for his ability to steal a bag without heavy caught stealing numbers..

That is just my opinion though.

Lincecum is better than Bills.

Kuroda and Cain are even, but Cain could throw up a monster campaign next year.

I might be the only one who thinks Kershaw and Johnson have very similar years, but Kershaw will strike out more.. and Johnson throwing more innings..

Okay Broxton is better than Wilson, I don't care if he made a Allstar team, I also think Saito will come back if he is healthy.. So if that happens then Saito blows away Wilson into the Cove..

Bullpen

Kuo/Wade/Troncoso/Elbert/McDonald

Howry/Affeldt/Romo/Hinshaw/Yabu..

Take your pick.. I go with the next best pen in the NL last year behind Philly..

So please feel free to trash me.

This is funny, sounds a little like Teixeira a little. Teams bidding against each other. Get to a point, then Boras calls the Yankees and they sign him. Yes?

Sorry just read atricle, maybe Giants sees this as not a good fit at this point.

Boras is playing everybody except the Yankees and Dodgers. I think he honestly loves to see them sign most of his clients because they can spend $5-$10 mil more than anyone else.

To DodgersBruin,

I think an Ad Hominem is a part of the Red Herring as a whole. Red Herring is the basic overall group, and Ad Hominem is one of the sub-fallacies of a Red Herring. So we both are right, but Ad Hominem would be better because it is more specific.

I'm back now.

I didn't die in my sleep as was so eloquently set forth by that great intellectual dodgersfansridiots. Instead he will not be posting on this site anymore and karma is a . . . , well i'm sure that you all know what I mean.

having this as your first 5 spots in the lineup is insane:

damon
jeter
texeria
arod
manny

that is just a good 123 punch with texeria, arod, manny. unstoppable

I agree that the name calling has to be put on hold till the season resumes...

I see the stats being put out there and have to give credit to the dodgers bullpen, however, those numbers were against the league and I'm more curious about the rivalry. I'm not a stats guy, but I would like to see/know the stats of the dodgers bullpen against the giants in the last two months of the year when the G's fielded their youth. It seemed to me that the dodger bullpen got knocked around a bunch if I remember correctly, and they blew at least two or more games in aug. and sept. I also remember the giants having a healthy win margin against the dodgers in those months. correct me if I'm wrong.

and there's a lot of talk of the dodgers having a lot of money to play with, but is most of that going back into signing their current players (primarily the pitching that is in danger of being lost)? how much of the 40-45 million do you see going into the pitching, or a new starter?

I do think that the dodgers have a stronger lineup, but from what I saw last year, after the kids got a chance to play everyday, the giants youth held their own, and I'm excited to see them play in the weak west, being backed up by, what I believe to be, the best starting rotation in the division.

I know this is very unlikely, but if the yanks pull a trick out of their hat and swoop down and get man-ram. imagine their lineup

1.jhonny damon
2.derek jeter
3.mark teixiera
4.alex rodriguez
5.manny ramirez
6.xavier nady
7.jorge posada
8.nick swisher
9.robinson cano

pitching:
1.Sabathia
2.burnett
3.wang
4.chamberlin
5.hughes

absolutely unstoppable
