« Adam Dunn's Price Might Be Falling | Main | Freddy Garcia Close To Finding A Team »
Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports that outfielder Jonny Gomes has signed a minor league contract with the Reds.
The deal will pay him $600K in '09 and provides $200K in performance-based incentives. The Rays decided not to tender him a conract this offseason afer he hit just .182 with eight homers and 21 RBI in 77 games in '08. He'll have a shot at some outfield at-bats with the Reds if he impresses this spring. Gomes has flashed good power in the bigs in the past, and the Reds can control him for several years if he succeeds.

i think this is a very good signing, because obviously it a LF, and he has great power and the highest amount of money the will pay him will be under 1 million dollars

Posted by: mitchell | January 19, 2009 at 05:28 PM
LF: Dickerson
CF: Tavaras
RF: Bruce
Bench: Nix, Gomes, Hopper
could use a little help...

100 losses, he we come

If Gomes ever becomes an impact player again I will be extremely surprised.
Posted by: celtics464 | January 19, 2009 at 05:32 PM
He can probably still hit lefties. for his career he is 266/369/510 against them.
Posted by: wihargo | January 19, 2009 at 05:37 PM
If Gomes can match near his career numbers against lefties he could be a solid platoon with Dickerson who has always struggled against lefties.

Jonny Gomes is the man, best move of the off season
Posted by: phantomork | January 19, 2009 at 06:05 PM
I hope Gomes works out like Jorge Cantu did.
Posted by: BigRedOne | January 19, 2009 at 06:37 PM
Gomes can mash lefties. He would be ideal in a platoon.

I agree with the platooning..this kid has some talent, just needs time to find his grove back...

If any of you have Xbox360 and MLB2k8 (the most recent with Jose Reyes on the cover, sticking a dagger in the hear of a Braves fan)... If you have this game, you should check out Gomes... For some reason the game thinks the man is Babe Ruth. I feel like an idiot for even knowing this little piece of information... Babe Ruth.
So I suppose my point is that it's funny and this is a sign the Reds will make a run in their devision -- That, and Aaron Harang remembering what to do.

This was the signing the Dodgers should have made instead of keeping Repko
And I called it, too :)

gomes in a platoon yes. id be suprised if alfonso doesnt make the team with his big bat in the spring. he's a first baseman but either he or votto could handle LF im sure.
the reds have at least 4 guys in the WBC, hopefully the injury bug stays away.

Who was worse Gomes or Andruw Jones?
I say Jones.
Posted by: ImRonBurgundy? | January 19, 2009 at 09:31 PM
Hopefully he will be like Harison Jr. from last year and be a productive bat. Please Castellini if you won't buy solid players then quit becoming the owner

Yonder Alonso is way too far from the bigs right now to make the team out of ST. If he is on a major league roster in '09, someone in the Reds FO REALLY needs to have their heads examined.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 19, 2009 at 10:14 PM
actually yonder alonso is very close to the majors and while agree he wont be up in spring training a september callup is not of the question.
this is a question asked by c.trent a reds writer when having a question and answer with baseball americas jj cooper today.
CTR: Can Yonder Alonso play anything but first?
JJ: There was talk early on, but I think they've very quickly felt he can hit, and he's not far from the majors, so why mess with him. Votto, I think, can play more than first.
so you are dead wrong saying alonso is way to far from the bigs

Yonder's bat maybe close to major league ready but he has only played in like 10 professional games, lets see what he can do in the minors first and then make a judgement.
I don't understand why people insist the Reds just spend money. They have something called a budget. They are not the Yanks.
Posted by: phantomork | January 20, 2009 at 09:04 AM
Ha, Yonder is not very close to the majors. That is a ridiculous comment. He may make the majors sooner than expected when the reds are out of it 50 games into the season.
Posted by: Peter | January 20, 2009 at 09:19 AM
yonder has amajor league bat and a major league contract. i still say he makes the team.

Baseball America has rated Yonder Alonso the #1 prospect in the Reds minor league system. Take that for what it's worth. Here's the top 10:
1. Yonder Alonso, 1B
2. Todd Frazier, SS
3. Drew Stubbs, OF
4. Chris Valaika, SS
5. Yorman Rodriguez, OF
6. Kyle Lotzkar, RHP
7. Neftali Soto, 3B
8. Juan Francisco, 3B
9. Juan Duran, OF
10. Devin Mesoraco, C

Dusty Baker came out a month ago and said the plan for the Reds is to build for long-term success. When you think about what he said, the Reds moves this offseason makes complete sense. The Reds do not plan on competing in 2009. Jocketty is not going to hamstrung the organization with a few bad contracts or an over-the-hill, overpriced aging veteran. Looks like this team is building for the future. The team has a lot of talent in the pipeline coming up, 2010 at the earliest. Also, the Reds can't afford to have expensive contracts on the books, when they'll be looking to give long-term deals to Votto, Bruce, Volquez and Cueto in the near future.

I think this can be a VERY solid move. I've always been a fan of Gomes. If he can get close to what he used to be able to do, this could be great.
And as for video games, I agree with the statement about him in 2k8. It's unreal.

I'm sorry...I just don't see it. I see more of the same type of cautious, thrift that has kept the Reds in 4th or 5th place for almost a decade.
We know the money is there. We know the FAs are there. We know that their inflated price tags are negotiable.
You can't talk out of both sides of your mouth and expect fans to buy into it anymore. You say you want to contend, then get off your wallet and go get Abreu.
He would fit perfectly into the Cincy lineup...and while not the best defensive fielder, is still a vast improvement over Dunn.
Guys...I've been watching the Reds faithfully for over 30 years...It never fails. We either have pitching, or we have hitting....we never have both at the same time.
Exhibit A : Last season. Lights out pitching...A Cy Young candidate in Volquez...ABYSMAL at producing runs...especialy with RISP.
Jocketty and Castellini need to see that finally the pitching is there...add a damned bat or two and you contend.
Yes..Cueto, Volquez and Bruse are gonna be looking at big contracts in the near future. That's a given. But when contract talks begin and they are on one of the worst teams in the NL...what do you think is gonna happen?
Answer: The same thing that happened to Hamilton. He'll get traded away or go FA and be an all-star for someone else.
This penny pinching mentality is getting old. We've been hearing the same old song and dance about building for the future for years...the future is now!
The economy blows...the FAs are out there...and they are not going to get the stupid-fat contracts they would have a year or two ago. THERE WILL NEVER BE A BETTER TIME SIGN THESE GUYS!!!

To all you haters, this is a very good signing. The low cost and possible high reward alone make this a smart move. There are other FA out there but none that seem to be the right fit. I think if there was someone worth spending the money they would have. With the players coming up and FA available next year, don't spend money just to spend it (ala Eric Milton)I think Gomes very real shot of doind exactly what Cantu did when he left the Rays for the NL. Bat between .260 - .290 and hit 25 HR and 90RBI. That is exactly what the Reds need. He is an ideal platoon partner with Dickerson. Their lineup would look like this:
1 - Taveras - CF
2 - Bruce - RF
3 - Phillips - 2B
4 - Votto - 1B
5 - EE - 3B
6 - Gomes/Dickerson - LF
7 - Gonzo/Kepp/JHJ - SS
8 - Hernandez - C
They could suprise some people and have a pretty good year. If they all live up to their potential even contend for a WS.

SadRedsFan, I understand your depression, but let's not be delusional. The Reds pitching staff was the 4th worst in the league last year with a 4.94 ERA. Hardly "lights out."
