why did the red sox ever get rid of this kid? now they could really use him

Yep, Kelly wasn't going anywhere, should get lots of ab's. Tribe was not trying to move him this winter. If he cuts down on his strikeouts this year he could be a valuable trade piece next year, though he's also just as valuable to the team, and I'd like them to keep Shopp, but we'll see.

The Sox knew the arm was a cannon, but nobody knew if he'd be able to hit at ML level. He's held his own with decent power and multiple clutch hits, but has been all or nothing a little too much.

His 15 at bats as a Red Sox was the worst I have seen in my whole life. He struck out while looking truly horrible, if you saw those at bats you would not bring it up.
I know it was only those 15 at bats but the way he looked was almost funny. They didn't think he could hack it so they traded him, no big deal.

If "decent" power is 21 HR and 27 2B in only 352 ab, then Shoppach certainly has "decent" power. It's hard not to love a .865 OPS from a backup catcher.

Plus Vartiek was still All Star Varitek and they needed the backup role to be able to catch Wakes knuckleball.

Yes, 'decent power', he had a 'nice' year, and is a 'good' guy. Jeez, would you call him a masher? Lay off, Trebek

I had no ill intent. My apologies if I came off as prickly.

"why did the red sox ever get rid of this kid?"
Well, he didn't project to be a decent ML hitter at the time. He still strikes out over 1/3 of all at bats, which is not in keeping with Theo's philosophy.
