Indians Sign Saarloos, Aquino

According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, the Indians signed pitchers Kirk Saarloos and Greg Aquino to minor league deals.

Saarloos, 30 in May, spent most of '08 posting mediocre numbers in Triple A as a member of the A's organization.  Aquino, 31, pitched well at Triple A but his brief time with the Orioles did not go well.  He missed time with a hamstring strain.  Both players were designated for assignment by their teams in April but cleared waivers.

Tim, please post something about the Indians signing Paul Byrd, even if it is not true. A tease is better than nothing...
Koo Koo??

Captain Kirk struck lightning in a bottle (2005), but then never found it again.

These signings provide good 11th and 12th starting pitching options for the Indians. I see them as sliding in right behind Tomo Ohka on the depth chart.....

Saarloos... ha, I remember when he was mad the Reds wouldn't give him a chance to be a starting pitcher.

They're called roster fillers. Guys to soak up minor league innings. All of Sowers, Jackson, Lewis, etc. would have to drop like flies for either guy to see a big league audition.

There is NO RISK to these types of signings. If Koo Koo demonstrated enough at AAA, he could get a few cups of java and eat some innings for the big club, though.
