« MLB Trade Rumors Reader Survey | Main | Manny Ramirez Rumors: Wednesday »
According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, pitcher John Patterson announced his retirement today at age 30. Patterson just has not been able to get healthy. His best season was 2005, when he made 31 starts for the Nationals with a 3.13 ERA.
Patterson was one of Scott Boras' infamous "loophole" amateur free agents in '96; Boras got him $6.075MM with the D'Backs.

jezz, to retire at 30, feel really bad for the guy
Posted by: 04Forever | January 07, 2009 at 01:18 PM
I always love when a lesser known athlete retires and a bunch of lardasses on the internet sit on their computers and go "LOL WTF is that guy?!" As if he's a joke for not being hugely successful as a pro athlete.
Not that it happened here. Although it probably will.

Guy clearly had talent - sorry for him. Hopefully he can find a job in baseball...I am sure it is hard to give something up like that.
Posted by: B3NG4L | January 07, 2009 at 01:22 PM
the thing is, more guys don't do this enough. there are plenty of guys who should just retire rather than muddle around in mediocrity. hey where's mark prior at?
Posted by: jaydestro | January 07, 2009 at 01:23 PM
This is really too bad. I remember watching him a few times, he really had phenomenal stuff.
Posted by: drchstrpunk | January 07, 2009 at 01:27 PM
Wish I could have retired at 30.

Hate to see any guy retire at such a young age whether they want to or not. Hope he finds somewhere that he can still be involved in baseball.
Posted by: Cardinals Fan Forever | January 07, 2009 at 01:33 PM
I don't think Patterson ever "muddled around in mediocrity." He was immensely talented but couldn't stay healthy. BP scouting reporting called his stuff "overwhelming" and said that his 12-6 curve was "hypnotic" and "legendary."
Posted by: jrfukudome | January 07, 2009 at 01:46 PM
When healthy he was a ace caliber pitcher, unfortunately he was really only healthy for that one season.
Hate to see guys with real talent have their careers never really get off the ground while guys that shouldn't even be in the majors get chance after chance just because they did one thing pretty good like Wily Mo Pena.

shoot is there anything to say he couldnt just be taking a year or two off? this guy was Nasty with a capital N. You would think with some rest and only being, say, 32 that a return could be done.

Incredible Potential................. never reached it due to injuries.... Best of luck to him.. my guess he becomes a coach somewhere...

Nice job proving to everybody that you are a d-bag. An extremely talented pitcher has to retire in his prime because of tons of injuries. Lets make fun of the guy.
Posted by: nrmax88 | January 07, 2009 at 02:27 PM
I checked his stats. He wasnt that bad. He had like a constant 4 ERA. Feel bad for the guy.

These are the most classless comments I have ever seen. I bet these two have never even had a girlfriend. Or they probably have, but they're just no man enough to deal with how badly they fucked up and have to blame it on her, much like how they have to pick on someone like John Patterson for retiring at 30.
Talk about LOW self-esteem.
John Patterson, you are the man and I wouldn't have minded at all if you were apart of my Angels' pitching staff. Good luck to you man.
As for those other two posers...
Time to walk a way like a MAN! LOL

Damn man, he had a great year for us in 2005, then he got injured and was never the same. He was awesome behind Livan for that year.
"This guy was Nasty with a capital N"
His nickname was "The Big Nasty".
Best of luck to him.

you all will probably think i'm being a huge dbag too...
when i first was reading this post, i was like, 'damn that's a huge bummer'.. and then i got to the last paragraph, and based on that i decided that he was one of the greedy bastards that the spot needed less of anyways.

If Carl Pav. got 1.5M - Patterson is nuts to retire. Probably would have got 4M for 2yrs. from someone. But class guy - good luck
Posted by: rockford | January 07, 2009 at 03:56 PM
this is a true shame. now i dont usually watch the Nats' play but ive seen a few of his starts, and dude was phenominal. hopefully within a few years he can get healthy enough for at least a comeback attempt. if not, hopefully he can commentate, or coach, such as other comments stated. if nothing else he'd be much better a commentator than rex hudler, matt vasgergan, and dave campbell of the MLB series. class act, sad to see him go out so early

I'm surprised he didn't give relief pitching a shot, look at what it's done for Kerry Wood...
Posted by: jatorres | January 07, 2009 at 04:16 PM
Great pitcher, plagued by injuries.
Best of luck to him in whatever endeavor he pursues.

It was actually the same clown who posted both of those little gems. Go figure.

Well this is really going to piss you off XxRyana.k.a.RufusxX
Matt White, Travis Lee, John Patterson, and Bobby Seay..
The baseball Gods prevail..

Nevermind, typekey pissed on that comment.. if you get it, you get it.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | January 07, 2009 at 05:22 PM
That's sad, I was never a big fan of him, but it's hard to give up the game you love. Best of luck to the guy. I hope he finds some kind of job involving baseball that he can enjoy.

Pitching in relief/an "un-retirement" if you will in general are highly unlikely...his velocity was completely shot last year. His arm is basically torn apart.
Thanks for the memories in 2005, John!
Posted by: thehoagster07 | January 07, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Unfortunate that he has to retire after putting in probably 15-20 years into baseball.
Posted by: icedrake523 | January 08, 2009 at 12:35 AM
Although this is sad, he do what a lot of players have done in the past, un-retire. I wouldn't be surprised if you see his name come back up in a year or so.

not that you are a dbag, but that John Patterson is a greedy bastard
Posted by: MDWhiteSoxFan | January 08, 2009 at 07:54 PM
Say what you will about Patterson. He might have been the biggest jerk alive, I have no clue... but he had flat out awesome stuff.
Posted by: CottonNash | January 08, 2009 at 11:47 PM
Good for him. Enjoy the money while you still can. 30 years old with millions to spend...
