Mariners' Priorities

Larry Stone talked to Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik, who listed the team's needs:

"I'd love to have an outfield bat, and I'd love to have another infielder.  And everyone is looking for pitching."

Stone also learned that the Ms have an offer out to one free agent and Zduriencik is very optimistic he will be signed.

Stone says Adam Dunn "has a strong preference to remain in the NL," and there's no indication the Mariners are interested in Manny RamirezKen Griffey Jr. seems to be a backburner issue.  Stone says we should "tuck away" Gabe Kapler as a possibility.

I think the free agent is one of the Orlandos.

If Zduriencik is talking about another infielder, you can assume that he means a middle infielder. Lopez needs to be moved to 1B and/or Betancourt needs to be moved to 2B. If Orlando Cabrera is signed (which goes along with GMZ's defensive-minded moves), Betancourt moves to 2B and Lopez moves to 1B. If Orlando Hudson is signed, Lopez moves to 1B (Betancourt stays at SS), and at least one position has been upgraded defensively.

And, the Mariners already have four draft picks which would be before their 2nd rounder, their #2 overall pick, the comp pick from not signing Josh Fields (I'm assuming he isn't signed), and the 2 Raul Ibanez picks.

I could definitely see the O-Cab addition by the Mariners.

They could likely get him on a one year deal, and their first round pick is protected anyways.

They could then go with Beltre, Cabrera, Betancourt and Lopez as their infield, or possibly trade Beltre.

I think moving Beltre is probably the best idea, although I'm not sure how they do it.

If they could land some quality talent from a team like the Twins, White Sox, Rangers or Astros, then they should really look into it.

I've heard the Beltre for Edwin Encarnacion and some idea brought up before, and I kinda like it.

Encarnacion could either play third or left for Seattle, and he's a big upside power bat that they need.

Beltre gives the Reds a HUGE defensive upgrade at third, while maintaining quality offensive production from the position.

I bet Zduriencik is quite giddy that Philly signed Ibanez though. Now he gets to start building his first team through the draft, which we all know is what he does best. Give that guy a ton of quality draft picks, and presumably he'll give you some very good prospects.

Oh, and they should trade Ichiro if they can, although his contract sucks and ownership loves him.

I could see the Cubs calling, with Fukudome already there and a need for a good leadoff hitter.

I like the idea with Orlando Cabrera

But not so much on the Adrian Beltre Edwin encarnacion trade.

I think we could get alot better talent then that.
