According to a press release, the Mariners re-signed reliever Randy Messenger to a minor league deal. They'd placed him on waivers to clear 40-man roster space for the recent acquisitions from the Cubs. Messenger, 27, pitched 12.6 innings for the Mariners last year and spent the rest of the time at Triple A.

are the mariners going to sign anyone that will actually improve the team? Are they just giving up on 09 already?

I have a tough time believing that Branyan and Shelton/Sweeney platooning won't improve the club. Just because the M's haven't signed a bunch of household names, doesn't mean the signings aren't significant (although this one isn't).
For the price of JJ Putz, Luis Valbuena, Jeremy Reed, Sean Green, minor league P Fabian WIlliamson and about ~$4.4 million the Mariners have added:
Franklin Gutierrez, Endy Chavez, Mike Carp, Garrett Olson, Ronny Cedeno, Maikel Cleto, Ezquiel Carrera, Jason Vargas, David Aardsma, Russell Branyan, Mike Sweeney, Chris Shelton, Tyler Walker, Chris Seddon and Freddy Guzman (among other minor league signings).

Im almost certain they have given up, they focus on picking up crapy pitching and pissing off their fans with every day passed that they dont make a move on any decent free agent

WazzuGuy, speaking as a life long Mariners fan you have to be realistic. The M's and Z aren't going to go out and sign guys like Bavasi did in the past giving out huge contracts when what we really need to do is rebuild.
While rebuilding Z is doing exactly what a good GM would do and that is get pieces that will keep the ball club a little competitive (albeit not for the division) and win a few games, while also gaining pieces for the future. We aren't going to be competing for a few years so it makes no sense to shell out a bunch of money for household names that won't get us to the playoffs anyways

Anyone who thinks the Mariners have had an unsuccessful offseason needs to learn more about building a franchise.. and shut up.

Agreed MakinItMine. If you haven't heard the Mariners are rebuilding. The new Seattle Mariners GM has done a good job in terms of rebuilding. With a team that lost Raul Ibanez, JJ Putz, and Sean Green [wasn't great in 2008, but had a decent 2007] and yet lost 100 games in 2008, it doesn't look that the Mariners will be contenders in 2009. The Mariners have made some good additions to the team such as adding Ronnie Cedeno, Garrett Olson, Franklin Gutierrez, Endy Chavez, Russell Branyan, Mike Sweeney, David Aardsma, and Mike Carp [a 1st base prospect acquired in the JJ Putz trade] that can help both now and in the future for the club.
