« Minor League Transactions | Main | Astros Could Be Done Dealing »
According to Ben Shpigel of the New York Times, the Mets have agreed to terms on a one-year, $2MM deal with veteran infielder Alex Cora.
Cora, 33, hit .270/.371/.349 in 152 at-bats for the Red Sox last season. He'll provide some insurance at second base in case Luis Castillo continues to struggle. Cora has also played shortstop and third base in the past.

It was time to move on from Easley. He had a long career and never made it to the postseason. Maybe he was the MUSH the last two years. I think Minaya just sent him to da bahtroom

so when is Omar gonna trade for a starting pitcher? Without naming name, the NL West seems to have a few availble.
Posted by: MetThunder | January 14, 2009 at 05:35 PM
Way to get Easley mets fans.
Maybe he knows how to not blow 5 game leads in september.
GO BRAVES!!

Good Luck Alex,
Did us proud in Boston, keep it going.

"so when is Omar gonna trade for a starting pitcher? Without naming name, the NL West seems to have a few availble."
Who are you implying?
"Way to get Easley mets fans.
Maybe he knows how to not blow 5 game leads in september.
GO BRAVES!!"
What are you talking about?
Posted by: icedrake523 | January 14, 2009 at 05:48 PM
hey bravesfansc, at last we have been in contention the last 3 years, when you have been in 3rd, and last year in fourth, so you can't talk. The mets would have signed lowe to be the #2 pitcher and he is your ace. you can't talk, phillies and braves suck, go metssss!!!!!
Posted by: johan is GOD | January 14, 2009 at 05:52 PM
Hard to believe Omar's just gonna hand Castillo the starting job. He's gonna look like an ass if Castillo's hitting .150 in spring training and Aurilia and Grudz are signed elsewhere.
Posted by: The Razor | January 14, 2009 at 06:04 PM
Good pick up for the Mets, good job in Boston Alex.

Lowe, Vazquez, Jurrjens, Kawakami, Camillo (with Hanson, top 3 prospect in all of baseball) is much better then Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, Perez/Wolf and your 5th.
Who's the mets catcher? Brian Shnider? Who's your OF? Beltran is great, but who else? Ryan Church? Moises Alou still?!
Castillo looks REAL good at 2nd base. He makes Kelly Johnson look like Ozzie Smith out there.
And i made a mistake earlier. You guys blew a THIRTEEN, i repeat, THIRTEEN GAME LEAD 2 years ago. And couldnt hold off the Phillies this year either.
You have little leaugers crackin jokes at the Mets.
Posted by: bravesfansc | January 14, 2009 at 06:08 PM
Definitely not a bad pickup, but Cora can hardly be thought of as more than a backup. Good defense, but quite an underwhelming bat. The Mets should not be done unless they're satisfied with Castillo.
Posted by: johnflaherty | January 14, 2009 at 06:22 PM
2mil for a utility player/backup? wow show how cheap the marlins are. or how expensive the league is today.
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 14, 2009 at 06:23 PM
You know, now that I look at their stats, I'd probably start Cora over Castillo. Still neither is an ideal starting option.
Posted by: johnflaherty | January 14, 2009 at 06:24 PM
"Lowe, Vazquez, Jurrjens, Kawakami, Camillo (with Hanson, top 3 prospect in all of baseball) is much better then Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, Perez/Wolf and your 5th.'
Nope.
Santana >>> Lowe
Pelfrey > Vazquez
Perez = Jurrjens
Maine ? Kawakami
Redding > Campillo
Niese < Hanson; but Niese is more major league ready.

What are you talking about bravesfansc? Dude you are locked in world of Braves Fans. Uneducated about a team that you don't like, and you're hear posting comments about what? First at least we had a lead to blow, thanks to Heil-suck and the rest of the bullpen. Second you are smoking crack if you think Lowe, Vazquez, Jurrjens, Kawakami, Camillo are better than Johan himself, then add in the rest, not close. Stay put with your team and I'll stay here. One more Q: Who is your outfield Francour.......Ouch!!
Posted by: kocur26 | January 14, 2009 at 06:26 PM
why are braves fans posting on the mets' thread? who cares what you think? please don't start with outfields either haha.
Posted by: realisticmetsfan | January 14, 2009 at 06:26 PM
Alex Cora wins ballgames.

If any fan learns anything from the Mets, don't talk smack before the season starts! I've been burned twice in two years by opening my mouth and saying the Mets were gonna do work in the playoffs. I'm not saying a word until game 162 is over.
Now onto these delusional Braves fans who post on this website. You Braves fans act like you've won the World Series the past 3 years and now just added Sabathia, Peavy and Pujols. The Braves won 70- something games last year and added Derek Lowe, a solid consistent pitcher, but not an Ace by any standard, especially at 35. When was the last time a team got excited over Javier Vasquez... and its not like Kawakami was a Daisuke-type find.. He could be Kei Igawa for all anyone knows
I'm not gonna hate, the Braves shouldn't be overlooked this year, they have potential to do good things this year, plus they have a loaded farm system. But come on. Stop with the 'Mets suck, we're better than the Mets' thing. It's just common knowledge that the way both teams are put together RIGHT NOW, the Mets are more ready to win-now.
Posted by: arul211 | January 14, 2009 at 06:45 PM
It's a good sign for the Mets and as a Sox fan I hate it. Awesome utility hitter and seemed like a great guy in the clubhouse.
I wonder now what the Red Sox got up their sleeves for a back up IF. Maybe more playing time for Lugo/Lowrie.
Posted by: Umair | January 14, 2009 at 06:45 PM
Nice acquistion METS; lol, now stop f***ing around and sign real players like MANNY and PEREZ.
Posted by: jvent | January 14, 2009 at 07:20 PM
Good pickup, now the Mets won't have the Easley curse anymore! Maybe he'll go to the Phillies so they can blow a lead!
Posted by: nymforlife | January 14, 2009 at 08:08 PM
Perez is not a real player; he is a scrub. Sheets is the only real starting pitcher left on the market, based off of your definition of real.

"Perez is not a real player; he is a scrub. Sheets is the only real starting pitcher left on the market, based off of your definition of real."
lol. I wouldn't expect anything else from you.

''Who's the mets catcher? Brian Shnider? Who's your OF? Beltran is great, but who else? Ryan Church? Moises Alou still?!''
Please get a clue before you post. There are 29 other teams in the Major Leagues besides the Braves.
And they blew a 7-game lead with 17 games left in 2007 - thank you for making up numbers to further your point that the Braves are the best team ever.
Back to the topic, Cora is the type of signing the Mets should've made two years ago instead of trotting Wright and Reyes out there every single day without rest. I don't think there is any coincidence here that Reyes has looked like a shell of himself the past two Septembers, which has aided the downfall of these clubs. It is difficult to play at such a high-energy level as he does every single game. It would be good to get both of these guys some rest.
But either way, I would NOT be surprised if Cora was the Mets starting second baseman by the middle of the summer.

I love what the Mets have done so far... But I just wish Minaya would make more of an effort and not Low ball free agents because of the market...
I WISH the mets could act a little like the yankees and Aknowledge that the last 2 years we fucked up and fix it with some big signings...
Now im not saying we should get Manny or have went for CC/Tex...
What I want is simple
Resign Ollie...
Then Sign Sheets to fill out our Rotation and put Redding in the Pen as long relief.
If someone falls(Maine fell last year, Santana jus had surgery, and Sheets is always prone to injury) Then Redding steps up and Neise can take over long relief...
Then IF POSSIBLE... Find someone to take that tub of lard Castillo out of 2B and Sign Hudson.... I dont care if we pay half of Castillo's salary... I dont want him anymore...
His lack of effort last year because he just got a nice contract is exactly the attitude the Mets DONT need if they dont want to repeat... Hudsons energy and ability, and willingness to talk to the press mimics Wright. And He WANTS to play here....

"Good pickup, now the Mets won't have the Easley curse anymore! Maybe he'll go to the Phillies so they can blow a lead!"
What in God's name are you talking about you moron? He was injured and out during September, when all the important games were lost, and only came back for a few PH's. Easley was a great clubhouse influence, and had a great clutch run with the bat. I'm not saying he should be resigned, but definitely know what you're talking about before you start talking.
If there's any curse, it's the Castillo curse. When he played, the Mets' record was barely over .500
Posted by: Paulio, Male Gigalo | January 15, 2009 at 08:16 AM
To be clear, I meant that the Mets record in games where Castillo played was barely over .500. I don't have exact numbers in front of me.
Posted by: Paulio, Male Gigalo | January 15, 2009 at 08:18 AM
yea i dont know why the mets want to keep castillo. who knows mabe they will trade him at the deadline. also when it comes to pitching i agree when the other guy said that minaya should stop trying to low ball the free agents. like with k-rod that was a absolute steal getting him for 37 mill for 3 years. now when it comes to picking up a starting pitcher i say that minaya signs ollie to a short time deal and sheets to a 2 year deal and ollie to a 3 year deal.
when it comes to the guy who was making fun of the mets bravesfan whatever your name is get the facts right. moises alou hasent been with the mets in over 2 months. and to let you know ryan church is one of the best left hitting left fielder, rightfielders in the NL. he is one of the most under appriciated outfielders. and what ever side of the outfield you put him you can bring up the mets young outfielder fernando maritenez, the mets said that they would try to bring him up in the 09 season. so there is really no big rush to go and get one of the big corner outfielders so that way we can compete with the braves BIG 3. Francour, whoever your gonna put in CF, and dont let me forget Mr Diaz who is absolutley useless because he stikes out 50% of the time.
Posted by: chris | January 15, 2009 at 07:16 PM
sign manny really no ones after him if u got a chance to sign some one good do it
Posted by: wass57 | January 16, 2009 at 06:04 PM
I like the Cora signing. Hopefully it'll light a fire under Castillo's a$#. Now, do this:
1. Santana
2. Sheets
3. Pelfrey
4. Perez or Garland
5. Maine
Redding/Niese
Then get Abreu (he seems like a loose guy that would be good for the clubhouse) or Nady (would be great to bring the productive ex-Met back).
We did so well with our new bullpen. Why are we now playing conservatively? Do we want to win this year or play cheap and drag this thing on? We have the $, so go get a #2 pitcher and a stud outfielder! Then call it a great off-season and start the season off with positive vibes! Seriously, if we have another Lowe-like loss, it will take away all of the great energy we had from the K-Rod / Putz signings and will bum the team & fans out. Not a way to start the season. Make a big deal and get everyone fired up for 09!
